The roots of the Pontiac Trans Am can be traced back to 1967. As the all-new 1967 Firebirds debuted, John DeLorean wanted a special version of the Firebird similar to what Carroll Shelby had with the Ford Mustang. Various proposals were presented to DeLorean from both Pontiac engineering as well as outside sources. One of these proposals came from Pontiac's Special Projects Group led by Bill Collins and Herb Adams. Their creation was called the PFST, which stood for Pontiac Firebird Sprint Turismo. Utilizing the lightweight Pontiac OHC-6 engine up front, the PFST would make for a well balanced, great handling car appealing to DeLorean's love of European sports cars. Herb Adams dramatically improved the 1967 Firebird's factory suspension, and added some fat Goodyear tires with Hurst Wheels. Scoops in front of the rear wheelwells directed air to the rear brakes. Under the hood was the tough, high revving Pontiac OHC-6, modified with an exhaust header and 3 Weber downdraft carbs. The carbs were tall and required extra hood clearance, so rather than mounting a forward facing hood scoop, Adams opted for a rear facing scoop that poked through the hood. The scoop was mounted directly to the air horns of the carbs, thus becoming the first “shaker scoop”. Taking advantage of one of the first numerical-controlled cutting machines (known as CNC) in the Detroit area, the beautiful finned scoop was cut from a solid block of aluminum, and underneath was a finned aluminum oil pan. The handling characteristics of the PFST were outstanding. Since this was just a design/engineering proposal, only one 1967 Firebird PFST was ever built. - MCN
