Michael Clifford ~ watercolor (23/01/16)
If you like rock music, you should care about 5 Seconds Of Summer. Hereās why.
I am a fan of Australian pop-punk band 5 Seconds Of Summer. Letās get that out right away. But more importantly, I am a fan of rock music, and thatās the hat Iām wearing as Iām writing this review. I am a fan of bands like My Chemical Romance, Black Veil Brides, and You Me At Six. I love the scream of electric guitars. I am among the alternative, the misfits, the people who werenāt popular in when they were in high school because they couldnāt be bothered to care about Justin Bieber. When I first came across 5 Seconds Of Summer, I was as wary as you were. They were young, and easy on the eyes, and sure they had guitars in their hands but so do lots of pop acts. I gave them a chance, though, and I wasnāt disappointed. This is sort of a concert review, but more importantly it is an essay on why you should give them a chance too.
5 Seconds Of Summer, 5sos for short, played in Winnipeg last night on their Rock Out With Your Socks Out tour, and did indeed āblow the fuckinā roofā off the MTS Centre as drummer Ashton Irwin promised. During their 90 minute set, the four members brought the audience of thousands to their feet, moving expertly through a catalogue of songs from their debut 2014 album, as well as a few fan favorites from earlier EPs, two from their upcoming sophomore effort, and two covers - a very well-done and uncensored rendition of Greendayās American Idiot, in which guitarist Michael Clifford gleefully yelled āthe subliminal mind, fuck America!ā, and The Romanticsā 1980 hit What I Like About You, the single off the 5sos live album (released late last year) that honestly out-does the original.
They were a joy to watch. I canāt remember the last time I saw a band with this much energy. The three mobile members - Clifford, along with lead singer Luke Hemmings and bass player Calum Hood - ran around the stage with the zest of school-aged children at a playground, working the crowd from all angles, leaping onto platform boxes and split-jumping back off them, making even audience members in the back row feel noticed and valued. Drummer Irwin was, by nature of his trade, immobilized behind his drum kit, which is some ways is a shame because I get the sense he has the most energy of any of them. Heās extremely skilled, though, and it is a treat to watch him attack the drum kit in a manner thatās almost violent. All of them, really, must be bruised and exhausted to the bone by the time a performance is finished.
The other thing they were, is very definitely, categorically, a rock back. At the beginning of their musical career, 5sos was invited to go on two tours with international pop phenomenon One Direction as their opening act. This was a smart move for them, but also a dumb one. Smart, because it helped them acquire the type of fame that allows them to play arenas. Dumb, because the music world, in a childish display of guilt by association, labelled them a āboy bandā before even listening to a single note.Ā
5sos is not a boy band. If my mind wasnāt already made up on that point, the show last night would have sealed the deal. The entire set was harsh and grungey and guitar-driven. Hemmings, who in another life could have been in a boy band with his chiselled features and blue eyes and velvety smooth voice, could not possibly have cared less about what he looked like while singing or if his outfit was designer or if heād grace magazine covers the next day. He was unshaven and sweaty, his voice raw and loud and beautifully flawed. The other three sing as well - Clifford has a rough edge to his voice that brings Billie Joe Armstrong to mind and lends itself perfectly to the genre, and Hood, who a year ago was arguably the groupās weakest vocalist, has come into his own and now thrills audiences with a smoky, resonant tone. There were mistakes. There were forgotten lyrics and missed notes and cracks in their voices. It wasnāt a pretty, polished affair like youād find if you went to see Beyonce. 5sos are not a well-oiled machine. They are a rock band. Their shows are imperfect, and therefore perfect.
This band gets a lot of hate within the rock community, mostly because they are young and attractive so people have labelled them a pop group when they arenāt. They were nominated for an Alternative Press Music Award this past month, and there were many who took offence to this on the platform that 5sos donāt belong in the alternative music crowd. This type of ignorance is unfortunate, but the good news is it isnāt slowing the Aussie rockers down for even a second. Their show last night was everything a rock concert should be. It was ear-drum-splittingly loud, rough, tarnished rock perfection. Even songs like Long Way Home and Disconnected that in studio leaned more on the pop side of pop-punk, in concert were as heavy and guitar-driven as anything Nickelback has ever released. The band members donāt care for a moment about how they look. They donāt dance. They play instruments, and they play them well - Clifford can, thereās no other word for it, āshredā. The dictionary defines rock music with qualifiers like āanti-Establishment lyricsā and āharsher and often self-consciously more serious than [pop]ā and āusually based on a twelve-bar structure and an instrumentation of guitar, bass, and drumsā. 5sos fits the bill in every possible way.
You can still call them a boyband if you want to. In developed countries Free Speech is an inalienable right, which means unless youāre directly threatening someone you can pretty much say whatever you want. You can call them rap. Hell, you can call them big band jazz if you want to. It doesnāt matter. What Free Speech doesnāt do for you, is guarantee that everything that comes out of your mouth is correct. And calling 5sos anything other than rock, is wrong. Sorry. Take it up with the dictionary.Ā
This band is important. Donāt hate them because their fans are young. They are important because their fans are young. Young people dictate the direction of the music industry, because they are the ones with disposable income to burn on albums and concert tickets. The 5sos fanbase probably has an average age of around 16 or 17, and thatās important because it means their songs make it onto the radio. Rock music, on the radio. Itās been so long.
Now, I know. As fans of alternative music, mainstream radio represents everything we hate about the world. It represents corporate greed, music being manufactured and mass-produced like a pair of Uggs, treated as commodity instead of an art form, songs being written by hired suits in an office tower instead of on the street by a real artist with a drug problem. We think the Top 40 chart is a pile of garbage. We would never want anything we listen to on those airwaves because then it would be cool, and as soon as something becomes cool itās no longer alternative. I get that. Iām with you.
However, itās important to remember that the music business is just that - a business. It is run, as all business are, on supply and demand. Money and resources go into the products that sell. Currently, those products are performers like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. Who are great, if youāre into pop. If youāre not, youāre already aware of the tragic lack of support for other types of music. I donāt need to belly-ache to you about how much it sucks that alternative bands donāt get the support from their labels that they deserve.
5sos is important to music because theyāre getting radio play. Maybe not quite Top 40 radio play, but still. Remember when guitars were on the raido? Remember when bands like Blink 182 and Greenday dominated the music scene? Remember when Welcome To The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance was a Top 40 hit? Those days seem like a lifetime ago, but theyāre set to make a comeback because young people, it seems, are finally starting to tire of the bright lights, the over-production, and the vapid lyrics that define pop music. Increasingly, they donāt want to sing along to a song about having the hypothetical best night of your life at a club that they couldnāt even get into, or a song telling them theyāre the most beautiful girl in the world sung by a boy with a conventionally attractive but non-threatening face whoās singing the same words to millions of girls worldwide and somehow tricking them all into believing heās talking about each one of them. Theyāre looking for something with a little more substance.Ā
Hereās the bottom line. If youāre a fan of rock, you donāt have to like 5sos. They donāt need you. They have more than enough fans already. But you should care about them, because of what theyāre doing for rock music. They donāt need your adoration but they deserve your respect, because theyāve done what most of your favorite bands couldnāt - theyāre putting guitars back on the radio and selling out arenas that seat 10 thousand people or more, filled with young fans in ripped denim and Converse. They are nearly single-handedly spearheading the revival of rock.Ā
If youāre a fan of 5sos, I hope you have/will get a chance to attend a show on this tour, because it will be a night youāll never forget. If youāre a fan of rock music but not of 5sos, thatās fine, but buckle up anyway because four kids from Sydney are about to change your world for the better. They are introducing this generationās youth to bands like Metallica and The Ramones. They are going to inspire young kids to pick up a guitar and start a band, instead of trying to be the next Selena Gomez. They are going to be indirectly responsible for the creation of new rock bands, who will get mainstream attention because, finally, theyāll have a mainstream audience again. The music scene is shifting, and when it does, weāll look back in five or ten years and say ā5sos did thatā the same way we look at Nirvana for the grunge movement in the 90s.Ā
Love 5sos or hate them, it really doesnāt matter. Either way, theyāve started a revolution. You can get on board, or you can be left behind.

Underneath The Same Sky (Soulmate - Michael Clifford) - Part 2
I got SO many requests for this that I decided to make it a whole series. I took quite some time(sorry!), because I wanted to plan out the whole thing before uploading anything, so I donāt have to change anything later. Itās gonna have about 4 - 6 parts, and Iām already writing the next bit :)
HERE ARE SOME SONGS TO SET THE RIGHT MOOD:
Bruno Mars - Grenade
JoJo - Too Little Too Late
Christina Perri - A Thousand Years
The lyrics of these songs donāt necessarily fit the story, theyāre just there to make you emotional *grins*
PART 1
* * * *
When you woke up at 5 minutes past four pm, you had an idea. It was as if the stirring experiences of the past morning had transformed into a whirlwind of creativity and the need to express the new emotions. You could see the sun going down through the window, the evening sun lighting up your room in an orange colour.
You got up and brushed of your dungarees, that you hadn't bothered taking of before going to bed this morning. You considered changing your clothes, but then, with a look at your watch, decided to just head into the city like this. The shops would be closing in 45 minutes, and you needed to get some materials.
The memories from just 10 hours ago were still fresh, and your dreams had been partly disturbing and weird. Your soul mate's voice had been ringing through your brain all night, but you had awoken knowing what to do next. You were going to paint a gigantic painting on your living room wall. It was as if the experience and emotions were to big to fit onto one canvas and your heart already fluttered with excitement at the thought of the final result.
You got into the kitchen, gulped down a glass of water, stuck an elastic between your teeth and put your hair up into a ponytail while walking down the hallway to the front door.. You fixed it with the elastic and slipped on your boots, grabbed your keys, which were lying on a chair next to the door and left the apartment, letting the door fall into place behind you.
You skipped down the staircase, the sound of your fast footsteps echoing through the house and made your way into the city. You were lucky enough to live quite central, so you reached your destination within 10 minutes.
The shop you were approaching wasn't an art shop. It was sort of an all-around shop. They had electronic devices, kitchen utensils, soap and bathing supplies, CDs, DVDs and a lot more, including wall paint.
You headed through the sliding glass door and for the big section of wall paint, right next to a row of TVs in all sizes, all playing the same program. The shop was not very full, with a few people here and there. A young man was looking at the big display of CDs and you made a mental note too have a look there too before leaving.
You were trying to decide what colours you were going to need and how much of each one. You would only buy the basic shades first and then come back if you needed more specific ones. As you were looking at the label of a big bottle of white paint, a shop assistant stepped next to you and started speaking. Good, no. Please!
āAre you looking for something specific?ā, a voice said.
You looked up and his smile widened. You couldn't stand shop assistants. It wasn't hatred, you understood that this was their job, but you sometimes couldn't stop yourself from being unintentionally rude to them, so they would leave you alone.
āI'm planning to make a wall painting. I'm just choosing the colours, but I'm fine, thanks.ā, you said with a sort-of tight smile. You were hoping that you had made it clear enough that you wanted to be alone, but apparently not.
āA wall painting?ā, the assistant had a lost expression for a second, then put a finger to his chin while staring at the display of colours. You awkwardly put your hands in the pockets of your dungarees and looked at the man, waiting for him to say something.
āWell, we obviously have different types of paint, I have never had someone wanting to paint a picture on a wall, if that's what you mean.ā, he looked at you and back to the display and continued rambling.
You listened for about 15 further seconds, nodding and āMhm.ā-ing every now and then, until you simply zoned out. Your eyes unfocused and you stared at the blurry outline of his face, the blob of colour that was his mouth still moving continuously. The sound of his voice grew faint and the quiet background noise of the row of TVs steadily louder in your brain.
ā...-the āShe Looks So Perfectā-singer had a stage accident this morning at their show in London...ā
Something about this sentence sounded weirdly familiar to you. You wondered what it was for exactly 1.5 seconds, until an all too familiar sound suddenly filled your ears.
Your head snapped around to the wall of TVs next to you, your eyes wide open in shock. A blonde lady in a red business-like dress was standing at a counter, speaking to the camera with a professionally worried expression. The line at the bottom of the screen read āMichael Clifford injured by pyrotechnics during concertā. Then the picture changed and a video was being played.
The sound was very quiet, but you still recognised it instantly. A boy was jumping up and down in the middle of the stage, to the thumping of a drum. A boy with a guitar was running from the back of the stage to the front, a guitar slung over his shoulder. You could see it coming, because you remembered it clearly from last night, and at exactly the moment that a flame hit the left side of his head, you twitched, and held your hand to your face, cringing and remembering the pain.
He ran behind the stage. You could remember the blind fear that had been running through his veins at this moment. It was all so fast and surprising that you hadn't even had time to really register that you were looking at your soulmate. You had found your soulmate.
The picture changed back to the news-woman. She continued talking. A picture was being shown next to her head. As soon as you laid your eyes on it, you sucked in a gulp of air in shock.
It was a boy who seemed to be standing on a red carpet, judging by the wall behind him. He had vibrant red hair, but your eyes instantly flicked to his. They were looking directly at the camera, and, looking at him, it felt as if a great tidal wave of emotions was crushing down on you. His stare was sucking you in and everything about his face instantly seemed perfect, from the light pink lips pulled into a smirk to the eyebrow piercing and streak of hair across his forehead. You held your breath and stared at the picture in awe, when it suddenly disappeared and the woman changed the topic.
āExcuse me? Are you okay?ā
Your head snapped back to the shop assistant, who was looking at you with a worried expression.
āWhat? Yeah, I'm fine, sorry. I zoned out.ā
He looked unconvinced and quirked an eyebrow. You awkwardly continued: āYou know, I'll just get these two for now and come back tomorrow if I need something specific.ā
You held up two bottles of black and white paint. Turning around quickly, you said āThanks for your helpā, and headed for the counter. You ran home and within nine minutes you were standing at your front door. You unlocked it, entered the apartment and closed it behind you, leaning against the door, breathless. As realization of what had just happened crashed down on you, you slowly let yourself slide down against it, until you were sitting on the floor, still in your black leather boots.
For eighteen years you hadn't ever even considered trying to find your soulmate, you knew that you didn't want to meet him. You loved him, you loved your connection and you never wanted anything to change.
It had never been hard for you to resist searching for your soulmate, as you had a lot of self-discipline. But now, everything had changed. You knew his full name and you had seen his face. It took a lot of self-control to not just search him up on google, where you could probably find every detail of his life within seconds. You would have seen a picture of him sooner or later anyway.
āFuck.ā, you groaned and covered your face with your hands.
* * * *
The next part is gonna be from Michaelās POV!
As always, thanks for reading, and I LOVE getting feedback from you, or requests, or anything else nice, and you can do that
HERE
Oh, and am I the only one whoād rather be left alone in shops? ^^
Can you do a part 2 to soulmate Michael
I will probably :D
āI think itās important to be self-aware about what people are saying about you, but even more so, be very aware of who you actually are, and to have that be the main priority.ā
Ok ok I get why you added WORMSTEIN stuff to that post but it's so secretive right now do you really want thousands of people following those accounts too? Idk im so torn up about this
People are gonna find out anyway... but Iām sorry if youāre upset about it.. I didnāt think that my post would actually get so many retweets, i didnāt think it would make a difference.. :)
Like idk they're so secretive and it's kinda cool to be able to communicate with them right now... And it's funny that no one knows they're there
Ikr... Although Iām kinda unsure after majestic felineās last tweets... but I canāt really believe that their just random people... especially because mr. swine(aka calum) tweeted the words ābroken screen of the new sceneā, or something like that, before 5sos used the phrase(guess it might be the album title?)... so yeah^^

I was looking at the rabbit account and i stumbled upon an old reply of him to one of cat's tweets and it said "i almost called you by your real name" but why would that be a problem its not like they are 5sos right? *ahem* *ahem*
ikr⦠:) ^^
Where can i see the video of the fake news ??? i can't find it anywhere
Umm.. Someoneās probably put it on youtube... Iām sorry I canāt find a link right now, but it has to be somewhere on youtube, as a private video by 5sos. So you canāt find it via youtube search, but Iām sure that someone has a link...
i feel like wormstein is 5sos because of the similarities in the vocals. i'm gonna youtube mp3 the song and see if i can make it sound like the original taking of the song, making the vocals theirs. i will post the video on youtube and link it to you if it sounds like them. but judged on the Australian accents from a band that claims they're from Massachusetts, i wouldnt be surprised if it the audio matched their voices.
Yeah thatās a good idea! ^^Keep me updated ;)
What is the countdown to I'm so confused
I know itās over, I just wanted to say that I didnāt have my countdown either... mustāve been some technical problems...
which video were you talking about when you answered the other anon his question with "You can see āGas Maskās eyes in the video and they look a lot like Ashtons. They have the same height, etc."? why do i feel like i'm on some fbi serie lol
Just the music video... itās on youtube and called āDonutsā by Wormstein or somehing... :D

omg at the end of the livestream ashton said something about welcome to the"the new broken scene" now the thing is, that Mr. Swine account replied to luke his tweet yesterday with "iphone screen of the broken scene"coincidence or not??? So suspicious
OMG really? That must really mean something, cause if you listen closely to the fake news thing from yesterday, at the end of one of the segments, the news reporter says something along those lines too! I noticed it yesterday! OMG YASS ITāS NOT OVER WEāRE ON TO SOMETHING MY FRIEND!
... I thought it sounded like a weird thing to tweet... but I wasnāt quite if I was hearing correctly... Check the news video out, cause Iām pretty sure thereās still something to figure out here...^^
Let me now if you find something new, we can be 5sos-FBI-buddies ;)
it's obvious 5sos is wormstein, but i really don't think the animal accounts are them tbh. there really is no proof :/
hmm yeah iām getting pretty confused too, especially with cats last tweets... but it just fits so perfectly, they canāt just be random people...? Weāll see. Hopefully^^
