“As I drove down the empty streets early this morning, I had the strangest thought. Realizing how functional I’ve been these past few months, how well managed my pain is, I felt grateful for my setbacks. I felt thankful for my suffering because I know, without it, I would not be as patient with and understanding of those around me. It’s horrible to feel like you’ve lost control of your life. It’s hard to lose your sense of self. How, given such circumstances, can one expect an individual to react appropriately to pain and to cope in a healthy manner? I believe takes an understanding of these underlying processes to provide the necessary support. Today, I get to be this support. A year ago I still believed my pain would be a permanent disability. I never thought I’d manage my pain, let alone help others manage their own. I am deeply fulfilled. I am extremely happy. I am bafflingly grateful.”
