But the ordeal is far from over for Alexander, a mother of three from Jacksonville, Florida. She will spend the next two years under house arrest, or what’s called community control. She will wear a GPS monitoring device that will track her every movement. She will only be permitted to leave home to work, attend medical and court appointments, go to church and pick up her children from school. If she plans to do anything else, she will need explicit permission from a judge. This monitoring will cost her nearly $11,000 for the entirety of her sentence.

She is also now a convicted felon. And in Florida, that means that she has lost her ability to vote, to help elect representatives that have the power to change the laws that put her behind bars in the first place. And while Jacksonville happens to be one of three cities in Florida that does not require people convicted of felonies to check a box alerting employers of their record on an initial job application, hiring and workplace discrimination against people convicted of crimes continues to harm the ability of women like Alexander to support themselves and their families.

We live in a broken society.

(1/27/15): The police have done it again. They have taken the life on another unarmed teenager, this time a 16-year old girl by the name of Jesse Hernandez. After shooting her multiple times, they dragged her lifeless body out the car and proceeded to cuff and search her, rather than seek medical attention. The death harkens back to another young, unarmed Latin@ the Denver police killed last year, Ryan Roquillo. The officer in that death was eventually cleared. Prayers for peace and justice to this young girl’s family. #staywoke #farfromover

This is our son Marcus. Marcus died unexpectedly on Wednesday January 14th when he was shot and killed by police in St. Paul, MN. Our family is seeking support from friends and family to assist with the home going service and burial of our loved one. Marcus was born June 2, 1990 and was 24 years young. His death came 5 months to the day after his older brother committed suicide. Marcus was caring, loving, and loyal to the ends of the earth to his family and friends. He loved his family with no strings, no limits, his smile was endless. Caring with his whole heart and had a wonderful sense of humor. With losing two sons, 5 months apart, we have depleted our savings burying his older brother. We would like to lay our son to rest with a proper service and burial and are asking everyone to please, even if you cannot donate financially, please share this.

Eric Garner’s case is one where there’s truly no room to speculate or for the police to come up with any alternate story, it’s all on tape that a man did nothing while he was strangled to death for the trivial “crime” of selling something untaxed.

Yet there are people who would desecrate his memorial and demonize him.

And still there are those saying this isn’t an issue of hate or white supremacy.
