finish?
What have we could have done more: OR Fix for exhibition
Paint - because we only decided to change the idea (paint it) the night before the submission, the spray painting job was rushed so we didn’t have time to polish it.
UV Lighting - I had a suggestion to mount two small spotlight lamps on the side to get more lighting inside, but Krisma didn’t agree on it because she didn’t want to buy more things and wanted to rely on the UV lighting material that Kim provided. The spotlight that Kim provided, I thought it was too bright, and I thought it just didn’t feel right into it. They gave us the spotlight about 2 - or an hour before the deadline, and I was in Kmart ready to buy the small spotlight lamp (I already got one, which I tested mounting it on the sculpture) so I didn’t see the full thing in person, and they said it was fine enough, and trusted them for that statement.
We needed to buy two screw-on UV light bulbs (Kim’s one didnt fit in the spotlight) and just one spotlight since I already got one.
Bigger rings - way too late for bookings. if we decided to only have one row, then we could have made bigger rings.
Secure the stand more - more material and not enough time.
Sound - We were planning to put rice inside the stand and connect a contact mic into the stand, so whenever someone interacts with it, it would make swishing sound, creating a more surreal experience.
This is one of the simplest project I worked on, but I think, this is the actual project that needed more time to be more polished, we spent a lot of time developing the concept behind it as well as prototyping rather than the actual finished work.
FINALLY!!
BLACKLIGHT TESTING YOO
we finally tried to test out our colourfull disks and they look amazing with the UV lighting.
Ripple Effect prototype
We placed some pins in just 10 rings to test what it would look like since I wanted to get that fixed pattern in. The pins would lock in the next ring so it would start spinning in a synchronized timing and get a fixed pattern. I was also aiming to get the spiral effect.
I thought this was pretty cool since it fits in with the context, but my other team member thinks its way too fragile, which it is. I wished we could have double up the ring so it’ll be thicker and it won’t be fragile at all. Oh well, test and trial.
STUDIO 6 - Stress testing part 1
8 mm threaded rod from bunnings bent when all the rings where placed, so I went to Steel south (Hayden’s suggestion) and get an 8mm steel rod and ask them to sand it a little bit since it didn't fit, which cost me.
UPDATE::
I had to use epoxy to glue the connectors to the bar so they’ll be more stable. We also made smaller rings that fit inside the connector to lock in the main rod.

Week 11
Painting process, we are planning to paint them neon colours, and then with the use of UV light, they would be bright enough to shine in the final exhibition.
However, after trying out 4 disks, we found that we actually like the more natural version. So we decided to varnish them.
Week 10
We have made few rings, its really hard because the laser bookings are all full and because of our files, they are very large file and it takes nearly 25 mins for one slate to complete.
Still have 10 more bookings to go to.
We realized that due to having not enough bookings and actually not enough time, we are only going to have one line of the spirals. we are also not going to have time to make a manual moving and stand, and if we do have a manual drive, it might not be as much effective and envolving to the audience.
Week 9
After prototyping we have found that we cannot use a motor to get the disks to move. Its very hard to have them all spin in different directions, as well as reducing the speed. because we want to gain the ripple effect so its very nice and we can see the patterns circulate.
We all lack electrical/wiring skills since we expect that it’ll be simple, (we cant figure out how to slow down any motors, since its too fast to see the pattern) like connecting it with battery but it turns out that you have to think and calculate the torques and speed of the motor. Lots and lots of testing and trialing, which leads….
Not enough time and…
we have to buy more gears and materials (including gear worms, etc)
But more importantly…
It will fit in with our concept better as people have to interact with the sculpture in order to experience the moving image, instead of just looking at it.
It will also feel more natural.
PLAN B
we are going to try and make a manual drive handle so that the audience would have to manually spin the disks with a handle on either end.

STUDIO VI - Questions
Week 8
Questions we had to answer and test before going into actual building
How can the layers rotate in different ways (one is clockwise, the other is anti-clockwise)?
two sticks with teeths (see above photo)
Use of gears
Kim suggested - some kind of feet for the sculpture, similar to Jennifer Townsley
- How will it move/ powered by?
Servo motors - How will we reduce its speed?
Gear worms
Bigger size of gears and gear belts/chains
Manual drive - In this case there's more interaction
- How will it stand? will it be steady and able to carry heavy object?
Week 8
An idea that Amy came across, was to have 2 big disks with the patterns and they would rotate in different directions. This has been inspired by David Roy’s work. This seems very similar and also simple so we have decided to change it up a bit. We are still going to have disks, though they are going to be many of them in stacks and will be layed out to look like a globe.
Week 7
Some designs that i drew before Karen editing them on photoshop
Symbolising Coexisting, harmonious system, evolution, and growth
During this break we had updated our brief and final concept.

Week 6
Crits…
The crit today was a good learning experience as we figured that what we have been planning now could potentially work and we can finally make a move towards prototyping.
Not blogging enough
Concept sounds good - we are in a good track
Need to start prototyping
Having to think about how the motion will work.. possibly a motor
