It’s hard to slow down. Everyday I wake up and give myself a mental list of things to do. I keep myself from enjoying things I like because I tell myself I need to finish this other task first. Laundry needs to be folded before I make a cup of coffee. I have to finish cleaning before I can play a video game.

This sounds like a great method of getting things done. No reward until work is finished. But it’s a stopper to enjoying the day. Why can’t I make a cup of coffee first? Yes, I’m in the middle of doing something, but why can’t I set it down and come back to it?

I think that if I finish everything that’s “work” that I’ll have a longer stretch of time to myself, to play games, to draw, to have hobbies. What I realize is that I will never have time to myself if I’m always trying to finish things I think need to get done. There will always be work.

That also seems like logical, no duh, sense. Yet I find it difficult to stop. If I don’t do it now will I want to do it later? What if it just doesn’t get done at all and creates more work for my future self? This needs to happen, and this needs to happen, and once I’m done with that maybe I’ll make a cup of coffee.
