Eric XIV (1533-1577)
Artist: Attributed to Steven van der Meulen (Flemish, c. 1543–1563)
Date: 1561
Medium: Oil on wood
Collection: National Museum, Stockholm, Sweden
Biography:
Erick XIV was King of Sweden 1560-1568. Son of Gustav Vasa and Catherine of Saxe-Lauenburg. Upon Gustav Vasa's death, Erik inherited the throne and his younger brothers Johan (III), Magnus and Karl (IX) received extensive duchies, which led to fratricidal wars similar to those of the Folkunga period.
Erik pursued a policy hostile to the nobility, primarily directed against the families that were allied with the Vasas, primarily the Stures. In 1567, Erik participated in a bloody drama at Uppsala Castle, where Svante, Nils and Erik Sture were executed.
In 1568, he married the commoner Karin Månsdotter. He had previously proposed to a number of royal ladies, including Queen Elizabeth I of England, but without success. In the same year, his brother Johan rebelled and Erik was deposed. For the rest of his life, Erik was held prisoner in various castles and died at Örbyhus Castle in 1577. He was probably poisoned on Johan's orders, according to tradition, by arsenic in the pea soup.
