On 7/28 I found a turkey vulture with a broken wing (visibly snapped bone up near the body) on the side of the road while coming back from hiking; I'd originally pulled over to take his photo, as I do, before realizing he was hurt. I bundled him in the car and took him to the nearest raptor rehab place nearby, who were able to intake him that night. I named him "Giblet," and had hoped they'd be able to help him recover, or at least live a good new life as an ambassador bird.
Unfortunately, the rehab center called me on Saturday to let me know that Giblet did not pull through. He had a broken humerus (as observed), but also may have had other internal injuries from whatever happened to him (as well as other possible stressors like dehydration, blood loss, infection) and was continuing to decline, so they eventually had to euthanize.
I only knew Giblet for a couple hours, but I became quite attached in that short time and had been really rooting for him to pull through. Turkey vultures are really neat birds. I'm deeply saddened that he didn't make it, but happy to have at least given him a fighting chance.
