Rule one of survival
The many uses of duct tape.
I can think of no other North American plant that is more useful than the cattail. This wonderful plant is a virtual gold mine of survival utility. It is a four-season food, medicinal, and utility plant. What other plant can boast eight food products, three medicinals, and at least 12 other functional uses?
Is being able to defend yourself a form of preparedness? I believe 100% that it is. After all, being prepared boils down to one thing, surviving in a difficult time.

In areas where tap water is not chlorinated or where sanitation is poor, there are several alternative methods for ensuring water is safe to drink. These include boiling the water, chemically disinfecting it, filtering it, using various combinations of the previously stated methods, or buying bottled water. Remember: if the tap water is not safe to drink in the area you are visiting, do not use it to reconstitute juice or to rinse fresh fruits and vegetables. Also avoid ice made from tap water.
Emergencies happen all the time, often causing devastation to people and their pets. Sadly, it seems like we are always hearing about another disaster. It’s hard to imagine what the victims are going through unless you have been there yourself. If not, it’s important to remember that it can happen to you. Emergencies and disasters can happen to any of us, and they can endanger our dogs. Emergency and disaster preparedness means taking the time to prepare now, before a disaster occurs. Proper emergency and disaster preparedness can make all the difference later. You can save your dog’s life by making some general plans in advance.
Do me a favor for the next five minutes. Try to forget everything you know about tampons. I know, it’s hard. But pretend that this is the first time you have ever seen or heard of the item below, and it is a new survival product on the market: the Tactical Adventure Medical Preparedness Outdoors Necessity (T.A.M.P.O.N.).
All kidding aside, a tampon really does have a ton of uses to a survivor. One could even argue for including a couple in your survival kit. Ultimately, I’ll let you be the judge. (more at the link)

A kit doesn't have to be huge, but just big enough to give you an advantage.

Ontario Air Force Survival Knife Review
I have very few requirements that need to be met when choosing a knife for survival. When picking a knife I look for:
Edge - ability to take and edge and keep it
Toughness - how well the blade and handle deal with being used
Utility - does it function well in different tasks (cutting, slicing, chopping, etc)
Grip - how it handles and affects the hand
I have had the Ontario Air Force Survival Knife for about 6 months and have put it through its paces. It did very well on 3 out of 4 test areas, but it has a few areas of concern.
Edge: It took and held an edge fairly well.
Toughness: Thick blade is hefty and damn near bullet proof. Handle is decent but the leather will eventually degrade.
Utility: Does a variety of cutting tasks but only classifies as average. It's not terrible and it isn't fantastic. It has the saw bit on the spine of the blade and the pommel functions as a hammer.
Grip: Not the greatest. It's too round and slick and hard to control. I have what is known as Trigger Finger and it kept making my fingers lock up.
Points of concern:
The saw bit on the back is a neat idea, but it will rip your thumb raw when you have to stabilize it for reinforced work or detailed work. Not really worth having it on there.
The finger guard is too big and makes it difficult to use for finer tasks.
The hammer on the pommel off balances the blade.
Overall I would say, in an emergency, it is a decent enough knife. It would last you and do most of what you would need it too. However, work is slowed due to the its grip being so slick and the saw on the spine For a long term service tool though, I would look for something different.
Home Emergency Preparations
Developing a home emergency is a great way to begin developing the survival mindset. I'm not saying that you should stock supplies for the downfall of society, but we should at the very least be prepared for natural disasters; fire, tornado, earthquake, hurricane, flood. Home kits, like any survival kit, should tailored to your specific area and the unique obstacles presented in your region. The following list is based on the Red Cross suggestions for home readiness.
1 gallon of water per person per day (3 days for evac; 2 weeks for home)
High calorie foods (3 days for evac; 2 weeks for home)
Flashlight
Battery powered or hand crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
Extra batteries
First aid kit
Medications (7day supply) and medical items
Multipurpose tool
Sanitation and personal hygiene items
Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)
Cell phone with chargers
Family and emergency contact information
Extra cash
Emergency blanket (I suggest wool blankets)
Map(s) of the area
Additional supplies to keep at home or in your kit based on the types of disasters common to your area:
Whistle
N95 or surgical masks
Matches
Rain gear
Towels
Work gloves
Tools/supplies for securing your home
Extra clothing, hat and sturdy shoes
Plastic sheeting (repair damage to house or make shift shelter)
Duct tape (what can't it be used for?)
Scissors
Household liquid bleach (water purification and sanitation)
Entertainment items
Blankets or sleeping bags
Learn primitive survival skills and nature will carry all the tools you need to survive. Everything else you carry is just luxury.

Shelter
Water
Fire
Food
Depending on the situation the placement of fire in the hierarchy may change. Fire is needed to purify water, cook food, and warmth. It also provides a psychological boost to see that fire blazing away.
Fire by friction using the bow drill method can be done solo or with a partner. Either method is not as easy as it looks and requires a lot of practice. It is not something to try for the first time lost in the wilderness. Survivalist Jon Tyndall of Terrascout demonstrating proper technique.
