September 28, 2017 - Croaking Ground-Dove or Peruvian Ground-dove (Columbina cruziana)
These doves are found in arid and semi-arid open areas in extreme southwestern Colombia and western Peru, Ecuador, and Chile. They forage for seeds on the ground in flocks. Though little is known about their breeding habits, they have been observed nesting in all months except September and October in Ecuador. Their call is a distinctive croaking sound unlike the calls of most dove species.
Friends don’t let friends make jokes about zookeepers getting killed/eaten by tigers. Or other big cats.
This is not the post I wanted to make for International Tiger Day, but it’s apparently the post I feel compelled to make. A big name photographer decided to make a joke in a post today about maybe needing to use an intern to bait a tiger into approaching for a photo and I just… I’m still upset over an hour after reading it.
It seems kinda silly, right? Like those are really common jokes, right? Especially after Tiger King and shit.
But guys, I’ve seen up close what happens when a facility has a fatality involving big cats. I know people at multiple facilities who have lost colleagues (and in some cases, they were interns). It is horrific and traumatic and people carry it with them for the rest of their lives. The folk I know went on to become staunch advocates for better safety practices - which is an incredible, important thing, and which also means they make a choice to relive that trauma endlessly in front of their peers in an attempt to prevent anything similar from happening to someone else.
It really bothers me that our general online/media culture has decided that zookeeper fatalities are okay to joke about. It’s not. It’s disrespectful to the person who died and it is incredibly unkind to their colleagues and peers and friends. These days, I’m very quick to push back on jokes like that - just a quick, hey, we don’t do that here, that’s not cool - and I guess I’m asking y’all to join me in that.
I don’t have a closing statement, I’m just distressed by the whole thing. I’ll probably post some cute tiger photos on the repository site this afternoon.
I know I barely post nowadays but this hit hard for me. I saw the post by the photographer and was actually disgusted. He’s obviously never been in a code situation where you’re worried about your friends and their safety. He’s never dealt with the pain of losing someone or watching someone have to rebuild their life after an injury. He obviously doesn’t give a shit and as someone with a huge following like he has that is dangerous. I hated all of the comments that were saying it was so nice to save the intern. You’re talking about people’s lives here.
Oof. Sorry. But especially after National Zookeeper Week that post was tone deaf as fuck.
January 1, 2025 - Masked Tanager (Stilpnia nigrocincta) Found in northwestern South America, these tanagers live in and around lowland and foothill forests. Foraging alone, in pairs, and in small flocks, they feed on fruit and insects. They build open cup-shaped nests where females lay clutches of two eggs. While females incubate the eggs alone, both parents feed the chicks.

January 26, 2020 - Bay-headed Tanager (Tangara gyrola)
These tanagers are found from parts of Costa Rica and Panama into much of northern South America. They eat mostly fruit, along with some arthropods, foraging in pairs or small groups that often join mixed-species flocks. Females build open cup-shaped nests in trees and incubate clutches of two eggs. Both parents feed the chicks. Pairs may raise as many as three broods a season in some parts of their range.
January 15, 2024 - Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo) Found in parts of northern and central South America from Venezuela to northern Paraguay, these tanagers live around the edges of forests and in cultivated areas. They eat arthropods, fruit, and sometimes flowers and nectar, foraging in groups of around four to ten, sometimes with other species. They build deep cup-shaped nests from dry leaves, plant fibers, and sometimes green leaves in bushes. Females lay clutches of one to three eggs and incubate them alone. Both parents care for the chicks, sometimes with assistance from helpers.
May 22, 2016 - Green Honeycreeper (Chlorophanes spiza)
Found from southern Mexico to Brazil, these tanagers spend most of their time in the canopies of lowland forests. The majority of their diet is fruit, though they also eat nectar and small insects. They frequently forage in mixed-species flocks with other tanager and honeycreeper species, sometimes also foraging alone or in pairs. Females build the small cup-shaped nests from dead leaves, tendrils, fungal filaments, and rootlets. Both parents feed the chicks.
