actually that post has Made Me Think. i think this fandom is doing better than it has done in the past in regards to not falling into stereotypes when it comes to the ugandan characters but i also think its almost too scared to do anything interesting with them because there’s little to no fan content to base headcanons off & it makes developing characters harder. i also think that there’s a real problem where every few months someone will make a post like this and everyone will be like omg so true! post a headcanon or two and then the villagers drop back into obscurity. i do not think it’s a conscious act of racism and i do not think anyone is inherently bigoted, but i do think that we collectively as a fandom do need to be doing better. i love the show but the majority of its flaws are the treatment and characterisation of the black characters and as a fandom if we’re fans Of The Show we need to do better at acknowledging that & treating it like an actual problem and not just something to ignore.

like obviously people r going to create more fan content for the Main Three white mormon boys but like ? why not nabulungi ???? character-wise she is so so much more interesting than mckinley. hell mafala is more interesting than mckinley. why isn’t there more fan content for them? i think people need to start looking internally at their biases and asking themselves why they’re prioritising what they’re prioritising

less of an online thing and more of a general analyse of the collective fandom but like irl with the cast it’s obvious as fuck as well, there’s some people ik who have seen the show multiple times but will not know the names of the black characters. like why are u referring to gotswana as just “doctor” his name is said . in the show. 😭 also show fans treatment of the black cast in general is not the best (especially black men in the show) but that’s more of a general theatre community issue.

like i don’t know. i think this has been a fundamental issue from the minute this show started to Have a fandom & i think it’s a mix of the initial characterisation from the fandom + what fandom works are out there for people to base their characterisation off + people being scared to do something “wrong” but i also think, unfortunately, a lot of it is racial bias, unconscious or otherwise.
