After a busy morning in the shop Audrey just wants to get a sandwich, pop a squat in the shade, and rest. She’s got the sandwich clutched in a plastic bag wrapped around her fist, but the rest of her mentally bulleted list launches feet first out the window when a kid ducks into her periphery.

“Not in the right place, I’m guessing,” she says. It’s a sympathetic tease–he’s, like, nine, after all. A smile tugs at the corner of her mouth. “South of Market Street. Where you heading, papito?”

She’s in the middle of tying the sleeves of her coveralls around her waist when grease spots across her tank top. Her white tank top. It’s not like it’s new, a little worn and stretched out from too many rounds in the wash, but–

But.

“You don’t wanna see Christmas,” Audrey begins, rips one glove off, then the other. “Do you, Speed?”

“Guess you don’t really build muscles jumping through time, huh?”

☠〖ᴇᴠɪʟ ʙᴏʏ ɢᴇɴɪᴜs〗☠     This girl looked like she knew too well how to work around a robot. Which     was all the more nerve-wracking to Jack. Robots were his thing ! He didn’t     need someone taking too much interest in his Jackbots, that how he got     people like Ashley pushing into his turf, ❝ Well you should be, these things     are DEADLY weapons of villainy. ❞

    Jack sauntered down the alley with the tallest posture he could muster. But     it was hard to be so serious when this girl was really sticking her nose to the     metal. His expression twisted when she finally looked at him, asking him the     most ludicrous question he’d ever heard, ❝ Are you actually– What ? NO !     I made that ! I make so many of these guys I could do it in my SLEEP !  Now     quit touching it– ❞

    The Jackbot, while heavily dented in the torso, heard his yelling and     immediately reacted, buzzing amiably as its head turned in his direction,                                                                                              « Did we win ? »

The corners of her lips tug up. This dude is a trip.

“Deadly weapons of villainy,” she parrots with a snort, flicking the robot’s dented metal body. The damage distorts what would otherwise probably be a pleasant little ping!

He’s rolling up real confident and Audrey, sensing a threat, bristles in response, straightens up with her arms akimbo, hands curling into loose fists against her hips. A person can’t be too careful these days. Her height offers her very little in the way of intimidation, but she’s always used people's assumptions against them.

“If you make so many of ‘em how come it bothers you if I touch this old busted up one?” she says, instead of something like this is dope and I dig its construction and what’s it run on?—the words that are actually on her mind. Audrey meets his petulance with a challenge, doubling down by dropping a hand on the robot. “This get to you?”

It snaps away when the robot speaks, but instead of fear flashing through her eyes, they light up with delight.
