The breakroom buzzed with the usual chatter of microwaves and coffee machines, but today the focus was different. At the far table sat the new hire, Alex — slim, soft-spoken, with neatly painted nails and a blouse a shade too delicate for the office’s gray monotony.
Across the room, three women sat with their salads, leaning closer than usual.
“Have you seen the new assistant?” whispered Marcy, glancing over her shoulder.
“Yeah,” said Tanya, stirring her soup. “They’re… different. Dressed like that. In our office.”
“I heard HR cleared it,” another muttered. “They’re allowed to present how they want.”
Marcy took a bite of her sandwich but kept looking. Alex sat quietly, scrolling through their phone, shoulders a little hunched, clearly aware of the eyes on them.
