Church of Santa Maria, Viveiro (No. 2)
The Church of Santa María del Campo is a temple of Catholic worship, located in the city of Vivero, in the province of Lugo (Galicia, Spain). It is located in the highest part of the historic center, next to the Monastery of the Conception, and is the oldest in the city.
This church is of Romanesque style, which since 1982 is considered together with its surroundings as an Asset of Cultural Interest, within the catalog of monuments of the historical heritage of Spain.
Although the exact date of its construction is not known, and the oldest documents refer to the fact that this basilica “dates back to an ancient time in its construction and so difficult to find out that it is lost in the history of the centuries”, it is assumed that the current temple dates from the twelfth century, because the Romanesque architectural style is the one that is present in this construction.
