A Whale of a Tale:
Hello my fellow bookworms, geeks and uncivilized vagrants! My name is Anna, and I hail from the United States.
I met my dear husband Amith during a trip to India. He’s highly intelligent, he wants to travel the world and engage in humanitarian efforts, and that mutual passion was a driving force which drew us together. Like many Indian men I've encountered, he has a bit of a hard time expressing his feelings, but he’s really very compassionate. He's a natural leader as well, and everywhere we go, people seem to look up to him. As an added plus, he's also awfully handsome:
Behind us in this photo you'll see an Indian naval submarine. He took me on a tour of it as a date, because he knows how to show a girl a good time. (This is an old photo, but trust me, he's aged like fine wine.)
I first read "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" when I was a newlywed, and I must admit my first thought was, “Why did no one tell me Captain Nemo was sexy?” I wanted to know more about his backstory, which was left unexplained. A quick search lead revealed a follow-up Jules Verne had written titled, "The Mysterious Island."
It was not as good as many of his other books. I think Verne wanted to write a Robinson-Crusoe-type story while riding off the success of his magnum opus. Captain Nemo appears as a sort of deus ex machina at the tail-end of the book, info dumps his entire backstory in a couple of paragraphs, and then promptly dies of old age -- despite being a remarkably healthy fifty-year-old just a couple of years earlier. (Jules Verne himself acknowledged his chronological discrepancies in "The Mysterious Island's" footnotes.)
At least Captain Nemo's backstory was really interesting and explained his character. His real name was Prince Dakkar, son of the Rajah of Bundelkhand. He was a prodigy, and received an international education at institutions across Europe. At age thirty, he returned to India and married a noblewoman who supported his vision of seeing India free from British rule. Tragically, in the 1857 Sepoy mutiny, Dakkar lost his wife and their two small children. He and his most followers built his infamous submarine, "The Nautilus," and sought revenge on the British Navy.
It all made sense: the extreme lengths he went to maintain secrecy and anonymity, his hatred of an unspoken enemy, his aura of sadness, the dramatic flair, etc.
And then looking at my husband, I suddenly understood my fascination with Captain Nemo. I have exactly one type; and that's grumpy old Indian men. Personality Database categorizes Captain Nemo as INJT, which is also Amith's Myers–Briggs personality type. Upon re-reading "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," I could definitely see the parallels in Nemo and Amith in terms of their sarcasm, introversion, leadership qualities, among other things. I'm quite certain that if I met a gruesome and untimely demise, my dear husband would become a mad scientist, and I can think of nothing more romantic.

i've just thought about the fact that despite the amount of drawings i dedicated to 20kluts i've never done any fullbody ref sheets for the characters (and none of them had a proper colour pallet till this day...) so whaddaya think
(due to nemo's mervelous hair he visually looks bigger than ned)
These deep-sea giants are rarely spotted, and we don’t know much about them with certainty. They have 10 limbs of similar size, similar to the extinct belemnite.

Hi! This is my first time posting here, hehe so I hope I’m using this right.
Firstly - I love Nemo in the show (AMC). Adorable, stylish and handsome (apparently Shazad Latif handpicked the outfits himself in an interveiw!)
Secondly, my actual question – how would Nemo react if one of the kidnapped gang were an innocent young lady who ended up integrating well into the submarine life? Like, she does things so meticulously down to the details and absurd things (like cleaning the ceiling and walls without Nemo saying) without seeking recognition or praise. She’d be like a very innocent golden retriever dog ready at his command (though she can be forgetful). And of course she admires Nemo (but says absolutely nothing about it because thinks it’d be ‘unprofessional behaviour’ that Nemo would frown upon). Basically the opposite of Ned.
I wonder if Nemo would find her annoying or actually crack a smile for the first time since his self-imposed exile.
Currently reading the early chapters of the book, would love to know!!
Oh man, I never check my inbox. I forgot the inbox existed! Yes, Shazad is my favorite Nemo-actor.
As for your question; well, Nemo LOVES to be admired, and I think he would have a lot of respect for someone who's hard-working and takes initiative. There might be a high likelihood that he'd develop a crush on said golden retriever girl. However, if she was too infatuated with him and was always submissive, I think he would get used to bossing her around, and he might never feel an incentive to confront his feelings for her.
Whether you interpret Professor Aronnax's relationship with Nemo as platonic or not, that's sort of the dynamic they have going on. Aronnax idolizes Nemo, and Nemo manipulates him. Neither of them are really bad people, but their flaws create a toxic dynamic, and neither of them are aware enough to address it.
Pardon me plugging my own book, but in my novel "Uncivilized: Captain Nemo and the Legend of Dwarka," I tried to create the healthiest possible friend/love interest for Nemo: Doctor Grace Evans. I do say she has a "golden retriever" personality.
From day one she adores Captain Nemo, yet she treats him as a peer rather than an idol, and that both aggravates and comforts him. She is highly responsible, competent and hard working, but she's also assertive and not afraid to point out Nemo's mistakes.
She's got her issues too, of course. She "loves deeply, but holds lightly," the residual effect of a turbulent childhood. Nemo's strange lifestyle is perfectly suited for her roving spirit, and he provides a sense of emotional security, despite being emotionally damaged himself.

"Our wonderment stayed at an all-time fever pitch. Our exclamations were endless. Ned identified the fish, Conseil classified them, and as for me, I was in ecstasy over the verve of their movements and the beauty of their forms. Never before had I been given the chance to glimpse these animals alive and at large in their native element."

someone once said that we need more jacques paganel appreciation on this site. i completely agree and promote this idea to the masses ...he's one of my most favorite literary characters of all time by the way
costumes for underwater rambles they have on nautilus and nemo's difficulties with it (you can tell i love drawing his hair. designing his hair like this was the best decision i've ever made in my life)
“Hee hee!” Ned put in, with a meaningful movement of his jaws.
“Ned! Oh horrors!” Conseil exclaimed.
“Ye gods,” the Canadian shot back, “I’m starting to appreciate the charms of cannibalism!”
“Ned, Ned! Don’t say that!” Conseil answered. “You a cannibal? Why, I’ll no longer be safe next to you, I who share your cabin! Does this mean I’ll wake up half devoured one fine day?”
“I’m awfully fond of you, Conseil my friend, but not enough to eat you when there’s better food around.”
“Then I daren’t delay,” Conseil replied. “The hunt is on! We absolutely must bag some game to placate this man-eater, or one of these mornings master won’t find enough pieces of his manservant to serve him.”
when will there be a chapter of them eating each other? /j
I share this headcanon, and I also believe that every time it happens, he treats it like a sabbatical and somehow manages to eke a publication out of it. His colleagues at the museum are simultaneously disturbed and impressed.
