I just realized that the reason Stan in S2 could still use a photocopied version of Journal 3, most likely with the invisible ink scribbles, was because he was using the magic copier from S1, the one that could copy humans.

And to think he was the one who got this thing up and running.

But if you think about it more deeply, you realize that Stan was capable of engineering/reverse engineering lots of other electrical stuff. And these were all self-taught!!!!

He rigged the vending machine and gave it a dual purpose as a secret door

And he most likely developed that apocalyptic-gravity-watch on his own

No wonder he immediately sensed smth wrong with the feedback that was affecting his hearing aid in Gideon Rises.

This guy was more than a capable (genius) technician in his own right. After all, he repaired a transdimensional portal and also rigged it through sheer grit and willpower alone.
