Spent some of my weekend with viewings (yes, plural!) of the Jersey Boys movie! Â Loved it!
I understand in live theater, they always talk about the âephemeraâ of the theater; namely, that for a select time and a VERY select few folks, they get to experience a play, a performance and then itâs gone forever.Â
Iâm very grateful  I got to see JLY perform live in Jersey Boys on Broadway.  I had a few viewings ;-) of his awesome and Tony Award winning performance in that play.  In fact, when I first went to see him on stage in Jersey Boys, I just wanted to see his performance because I had heard about how amazing it was.  The plan was to watch him perform in Jersey Boys and then spend the rest of my time in NYC seeing other plays.  The first time I saw him, his acting/singing blew me away!  So much so, that I didnât make it to the other plays I had planned on seeing.  I (cough) spent most of my time at the August Wilson seeing what was, IMHO, an incredible and iconic performance by JLY.  These types of incredible performances donât come about very often, which is why I feel lucky I was able to see him as many times as I did.
I often thought about all the other people who would have loved to see him  but would never be able to afford to do so (traveling to NYC/London, cost of the ticket, etc).  His was a truly iconic performance and I was somewhat sad at the time that it would not be recorded for more people to enjoy.
Then they announced that he was starring in the movie adaptation of Jersey Boys! Â The movie is amazing on multiple levels: costumes, cars (the cars!)Â along with great performances by Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda and Vincent Piazza. Â And of course, Christopher Walken who performs with gusto the role of the mafioso who takes Frankie Valli and the group under his wings, so to speak.
But the thing I love most about the movie is JLYâs performance; itâs just as intense and wonderful as I remember it when he performed on stage. Â Just like when I was lucky enough to sit close to the stage and saw the emotion in his eyes; the camera catches that and itâs just thrilling! Â Finally, his iconic performance as Frankie Valli has been preserved! And now, many more people will be able to see his performance.
For my friends who werenât able to see him on stage, I have dates with them to see the movie :-). Â Theyâre interested in the story and of course, I might have mentioned how great JLY when I saw him on Broadway and London, so theyâre especially interested to see him as well.
I was walking in my âhood yesterday and one of my neighbors stopped me, elated and happy. Â She informed me that she and another neighbor saw the marquee at the local movie theater the previous night. Â âHey, isnât that the play that Michelle went to see so many times?â Â They saw it and she said âAbsolutely LOVED it.â Â She went on and on about how much they enjoyed it!
The audiences Iâve been in have laughed at the funny parts of the movie, gasped at the shocking partsâit seems most have never seen the play from their reactions to whatâs happening on screen. Â Additionally, Iâve seen a lot of guys going to this movie, which is kinda cool too :-). Â And, unlike most movies today, they clapped at the end. Â
So, if you havenât seen this movie, what are you waiting for? Weâre lucky that it includes JLYâs iconic performance in the lead role. Â Congrats to JLY, Mr. Eastwood and the rest of the cast and crew.Â
Now, for more theater viewingsâ- at least until they release the DVD ;-)
