Evolution of Mercurial
1998: Mercurial Vapor
Do you know the 1st Mercurial was actually inspired by a track spike? Initially known as Tiempo Ultra Light, and the Ronaldo Ultra Speed, the Nike Mercurial was an answer to Ronaldo’s (R9) need. Arguably the first ever “speed” boot that was made thanks to the influence from R9, the Mercurial evolved to being the lightest boots from it’s predecessor Tiempo. The Mercurial made an impact in blue and yellow on Ronaldo’s feet on football’s biggest stage in the summer of 1998 during the World Cup in France.
2000: Nike Match Mercurial
The Nike Match Mercurial continued for it’s well known lightweight boots where it only weighed 230 grams; a strong testament that Mercurial was evolving to be lighter weight year by year. Realize it or not, there’s 5 dots at the heel of the boots where it represents 5 phenomenal football boots experimented by Nike for it’s players; which are:
· Mercurial R9
· Air Zoom Italia
· Match Mercurial
· Air Zoom Mercurial
And YES, Air Zoom (well known in Nike Running shoes) were incorporated in the Mercurial boots! A bold statement by Nike that fast could get even faster.
2004: Nike Mercurial Vapor II
From one Ronaldo (R9) to another Ronaldo (CR7), this boots saw both Ronaldo donning the boots and bossing the game. Then teen CR7 being noticed by his fancy footwork wearing this boots as it’s given an aesthetic upgrade of being slique and an enlarged heel tab for extra ankle cushioning.
2006: Nike Mercurial Vapor III
The most liked and famous Mercurial edition ever, the Vapor III introduced the Teijin Microfiber on the upper that retains the same function of being a speed boots as well as giving an elastic upper for more flexibility.
Cristiano Ronaldo wore a bold Cactus colorway meanwhile the Brasilian Ronaldo celebrated his all-time tournament scoring record in 2006 with a limited-edition version of the Mercurial Vapor III R9, and signaled a decade of Mercurial speed with a 10th anniversary edition (released in 2007) that brought the distinctive color scheme of the original Mercurial to the carbon fiber-aided Mercurial Vapor III platform.
2008: Nike Mercurial Vapor IV
The new look of the Teijin upper now covers the laces, for more clean surface for shooting as well as giving more visibility to the swoosh. The soleplate is given a construction of glass fiber, for a durable and lightweight boots. The boots that had a strong shoes to fill in (no pun intended) after it was compared with the likes of Mercurial Vapor SL.
2009: Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly
What’s next? It’s the introduction of “Superfly” series where it has the cutting edge of a track spikes with the addition of Nike Flywire system (midfoot support) and carbon fiber soleplate for lightweight and durability.
The idea of it being ‘Superfy” is the obsession behind pushing the boots to be lighter and faster than ever, this became a silo by itself and often rated as an elite version of a Vapor. In addition to it, (RED) lace was used (pictured above) as part of the fight against AIDS campaign that was launched through the lens of sports by Nike.
2010: Nike Mercurial Superfly II
As the game has been evolving to become faster, the speed boot has now revolutionized to have a protruding front studs as the player accelerates for better traction on ground thanks to the inspiration from cheetah. Introduced for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa, the Superfly II was given an elite series upgrade that was achieved through the carbon fiber soleplate and also an the violet/orange heel tab for increased visibility on pitch.
Pictured above is the CR7 version of the Supefly II which was an inspiration drawn from the safari print and bold orange swoosh for more visibility. Just as the player himself wants it!
2011: Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly III
Focused on eliminating the small stumbles and slips that can be exploited by the opposition, the third incarnation of the Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly III aimed to maximize a player’s every chance on pitch. Toe-off traction reduced the risk of slipping, while a tri-blade configuration maximized speed during directional changes.
The bold colour placement focused on the rear side of the boots gives a bold statement of players wanting to stand out on pitch wearing the boots, and it goes well with the heritage of the boots. In pictured above, the Superfly III was given a CR7 personalization to commemorate his excellence in front of the goal.
2012: Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII
The year of Euro 2012, why not have a new boots? Hence the introduction of Vapor VIII and well known for its soft teijin upper that gives the sensation of a suede upper. Also not forgetting the new construction of the studs, the boots were made to provide right amount of traction and balance to the player.
For the Euro 2012, Nike came out with the clash collection where the Vapor was given a nice little pink colour on the heel for its boldness for the best players in the world.
2013: Nike Mercurial Vapor IX
The boots that had 2 colourways during for it’s launch, the Fireberry was given to senior players (CR7, Ibrahimovic, etc) while the Sunset colourway was given to young players such as (Theo Walcott, Christian Eriksson, etc).
Nike take a new approach to the Vapor range by redesigning the upper and materials used, with a speed-controlled, dimple textured upper offering a pretty unique visual effect.
2013: Nike Mercurial Superfly IV
Call it a slingshot for the foot. Born from years of R&D in the Nike Explore Team Sport Research Lab, the Superfly IV was designed for the player who is always a step ahead of his marker and the game of football itself.
Nike Flyknit technology drives the boot’s revolutionary design.with high collar for more form fitting and allows player’s feet to move as one unit. Since its debut, Mercurial boots have been synonymous with speed. With the Mercurial Superfly IV, speed has evolved with the game of football. Just as matches have become faster and more intense, the boot is engineered to react quicker. The Superfly IV is the ultimate articulation of the Mercurial vision to date.
ADIDAS PREDATOR PULSE TRX FG
In the year 2004, Adidas introduced a cutting-edge technology known as the Power Pulse System. What it does is it shifts the center of gravity of the boots closer to striking impact through the PowerPulse Sock Liner which offers powerful shots on goal.
It features a classic and simple design with a ribbed type of midsole that sees the Adidas three stripes wrapping under boots. The first and original color way released was the black and red.
1972 FC Top 3 Tiempo: Number 1
Nike Tiempo Legend IV Elite
For many years, the Tiempo stayed true to the classiest players on the pitch. Players like Totti, Pirlo, Ronaldinho are still aging out the strong dominant in the modern game now. The Nike Tiempo Legend IV Elite still about the traditional craft and definitely hits our top list.
This series has some seriously premium soft expectation behind the boots. It comes with an exceptional choice of premium kangaroo leather that gave us the ultimate leather touch on the upper. This is also the first time Nike introducing the Flywire technology on the Tiempo series. It supplies the strength structure for the upper feel and also the re-engineered carbon fiber sole-plate that incorporate the light weight in the classic leather boot.
Our favourite gotta be the first drop colour, the classic black based with the orange heel stripes. There is no doubt that the slick black premium leather show off the leather construction, just the perfect blend of new age technology and heritage.

#JerseyOnPoint: FC Seoul
Currently belting 5 league titles, 2 FA cups, 2 League cups and 1 Super cup, it is the one and only FC Seoul, based in Seoul, the main capital and largest metropolis of South Korea. Being evaluated as the most valuable club in the K League classic in 2012, this professional football club is rich in history and culture since it's humble beginning in the year 1983.
FC Seoul has been around for 32 years and they have cultivated some really interesting club culture. The previous mascot that represented the team was a bull and cheetah respectively but on April 6, 2004 it is said that an extraterrestrial was sent down to Seoul World Cup Stadium through an intergalactic spacecraft. The current mascot is known as SSID which stands for Seoul & Sun In Dream, a red coloured extraterrestrial.

1972 FC Top 3 Tiempo: Number 2
Nike Tiempo Legend V
The fifth series, the plush leather with classic designs dial up their colour palettes that appealed to us throughout the year of 2015. Our personal favourite is the Premium V “Totti edition”, tribute to the classiest, loyal player, the legendary Francesco Totti. This amazing design comes with the acknowledgment of his love for the classic fold over tongue and a roman warrior spirit inspired design embossed in the sock liner.
And not to forget, the Women’s World Cup pack. Tribute to the women’s game during the Women’s World Cup in Canada recently, saw that the Nike Tiempo came with a fresh blue lagoon splash on the upper. Nice touch for the ladies.
Characterized by it’s class of players, this fifth generation stays with their reputation by providing the best K-leather in the market. With the new toe box stitching design, the boots wraps nicely around your feet for the ultimate comfort and lockdown. Biggest challenge for all leather boots are during rainy season, hence this series comes with the HyperShield technology which enhances water resistant feature on the upper. The HyperShield technology blocks moisture out and allow optimum control regardless of any weather, perfect attribute for our tropical climate here in Southeast Asia.
Definitely up a notch on the overall structure of the boots from the upper stitching designs to the new stud configurations, the Tiempo charm does the job quite nicely.
The one that stay for a while, this Tiempo V have been a regular debutant on our weekly footie session, as we love the rotation of different colours every week.
1972 FC Top 3 Tiempo: Number 3
No.3 - 2010 Nike Tiempo Legend iii series
In the lead up to the highly anticipated Nike Tiempo VI launch in 2016, we dig deep into our 1972FC’s vault on our top 3 Nike Tiempo.
Just like most kids out there, I started my football journey with this everlasting leather pair of boots. My youth coach used to say that, “you have to build your foundation with a pair of good leather boots”. And the Nike Tiempo is the start of my footie journey.
Let’s start with our number 3, the Nike Tiempo Legend iii series.
The Nike Tiempo Legend iii Elite is the first introduction of the re-engineered sole-plate on the Tiempo series and the last series of the fold down tongue. The boots incorporates a Kanga-light upper and light weight construction on the sole plate, the merge of the classic with the new age. Deemed to stay with the classic, the kanga-light leather upper offering a higher level of durability on all condition weather and the carbon fiber soleplate, it produced a lighter body weight (8.2oz) compares to the Tiempo Legend iii version.
In the other hand, there are still a few constants in the Tiempo line. The Tiempo Legend iii still produced a quality boot with an amazing classic touch of leather. Overall soft kangaroo leather for superior comfort and ball control. A split sole plate gave the ultimate flexibility for forefoot flex. And not running away from the main selling point, the Tiempo Legend iii has always been its flawless classic look with the maintaining the signature tongue for the last time.
Somehow the Tiempo iii have always been my go to comfort boots, whenever I’m on our weekly kick-around with the boys. What more can I ask, nothing like a classic crafted leather boots.
The Amazing Kingdom of Cambodia
The main purpose of travelling is self-discovery and to find the true meaning of life through the sense of touch, sight, hearing, taste, and smell. In every journey it’s not about the destination but the experience. Here is my adventure across two historical cities in the amazing kingdom of Cambodia in search for happiness of the beautiful game with the locals. The journey started at the point of crossing the Cambodian border via overland. Poipet is a Cambodian town on the Cambodia-Thailand border in Ou Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey Province.
Upon arrival in Siem Reap, we visited an orphanage home called CDO Children Orphanage. I’ve actually written an article on my experience to the orphanage home. Read more here http://1972fc.com/post/128014709857/a-joyful-evening-of-footy-in-cambodia-as-my. Basically the 1972FC team donated a few footballs and had a kick-about with the kids in the evening. For team selection, we lined the kids up to form two teams with the classic 1-2 team pick. Both boys and girls were eager to play and it was nice to see that the girls were as aggressive as the boys. I found out that they were well verse with the top premiere league teams such as Chelsea and their favourite football idol would be the one and only Neymar.
Next destination, Phnom Penh the busiest capital in Cambodia. Whilst walking along the waterfront lined with parks, restaurants, and pubs in the evening, I saw a group of boys playing football in front of the majestic Royal Palace. I joined in the game with the approval from the local boys and it was game on. Out from the ordinary, they were using a rattan ball (sepak takraw ball) and slippers as goalpost on the tar road. It reminds me of the days when I started playing football. I really enjoyed the game because of the authenticity and simplicity of the beautiful game.
The culture of football is everywhere across the world and the unique thing is it is played differently in every country. Just by travelling across these two cities and experiencing the football culture, it was one of the most extraordinary feelings I’ve ever felt. Kids were barefoot, condition of the pitch were unplayable but they still made full use of it. Most of us are privileged to play football with proper boots, ball and pitch. Always stay grateful and contented with the things laid in front of us. No doubt, football speaks the same language in any country. Play the game and stay humble. That’s the motto of 1972FC.
Bled FC is more than just football; it is a creative platform that explores the world of football. Introducing the first issue of Bled FC Magazine, what more than starting their first print with a special Southeast Asia edition. Leaded by the amazing Parisian with Vietnamese parents Stephane Nam Kunn, he and his team compiled a travel diary of their journey back to his Southeast Asia root. A place closed to our heart too.
These 116 pages documented the hidden gems of the beautiful football culture in this part of the world. We 1972FC based in Southeast Asia and found it intriguing with the local stories that we didn’t even know (good catch boys).
Their journey start from the beautiful Cambodia leads to Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and ends with Myanmar. The Bled FC magazine is the perfect guide for any football fans that want to explore Southeast Asia. Tons of photos from playground kick-around to heritage stadium architectures, local footballer’s interview stories and street food guide.

Well done Bled FC team, definitely one amazing capture of the beautiful football culture in Southeast Asia. Can’t wait to share this with our friends here in Malaysia, till the next issue! Bled out!
JDT, The Next Big Wave in Asian Football
Champions of Malaysia Super League 2014/2015, which means Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) automatically given a slot to compete in AFC Cup 2015. But what is AFC CUP? In the context of Europe, AFC Cup is similar to UEFA Europa League and considered one of the most prestigious competition in the region.
JDT began well by toping Group F ahead of Kitchee (Hong Kong), East Bengal (India) and Balestier Khalsa (Singapore). They went up against South China from Hong Kong in the Quarter-finals, who beat the mighty Pahang twice in Group G but eventually lost to JDT 4-2 on aggregate.
Sometimes, you have to count your lucky stars too; and that’s what JDT did when they were given a straight passage to the final as their semi-finals opponent Al-Qadsia of Kuwait were suspended from competing by FIFA. Al-Qadsia the defending champions and also the favorites beat JDT 3-1 in the 1st leg before they were officially banned from competing.
JDT went on to win the AFC Cup 2015 after beating FC Istiklol 1-0 in Tajikistan and became the first Malaysian side to do so! Icing to the cake, skipper and our very own Malaysian midfielder Safiq Rahim was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the entire competition; impressive! Keep the Malaysian pride fly high captain!
Johor Darul Takzim (JDT),who were once struggling to keep up with the likes of Kelantan FA and Selangor FA.while in the midst of scrambling for promotion to the 1st division of Malaysia league is now one of the best team in Asia. Digest that!

#jerseyonpoint: Did you know Bangkok Glass FC was formerly called the Krung Thai Bank FC until 2006? This was due to the fact that bank teams are not allowed to compete in the top flight for legal reasons.
Only the second team to be signed by Nike after Chonburi FC in the Thai Premier League, Bangkok Glass FC is a leading force hailed from Pathum Thani, Thailand which has competed in the recent AFC Champions League Cup before losing out to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in the Preliminary Round 2.
The rabbit in the logo is inspired by their nickname as Glass Rabbits and female fans can be seen flocking in to the stadium wearing bunny head gears to further blend in.
Inspiration comes in different form, #rajaknows is one. Truly an inspiration to some, Datuk K. Rajagobal has quickly immersed in some of our hearts, especially Malaysian football fans in the late 2000’s. He showed that Harimau Malaya can put up a good fight too after losing the first match 1-5 to Indonesia in the group stages wearing this very same jersey for the first time, to beat all odds and win the AFF Suzuki Cup tournament in 2010 beating the mighty Indonesians 4-2 in the finals!.
The Malaysia National Team Kit which was launched in 2010, features the “Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku” (Land where my blood has shed) war cry on the inner badge and also the famous black & yellow stripes, that went on to win the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 under the supervision of Datuk K.Rajagobal.
With that, 1972fc would love to give away the exact same jersey with Datuk K.Rajagobal’s signature after their famous AFF Suzuki 2010 cup win. All you got to do is head over to our Instagram page and tag 2 friends who have inspired you in your football life and winner will be notified soon.
#rajaknows
The word “Raja” is very synonym for all Malaysians as it means the “King” who is duly respected by the entire nation. But there’s another “King” in the world of football in Malaysia, and he’s none other than Rajagobal or widely known as King Raja by football fans around Malaysia.
Rajagobal or RG started out as a football player who played for PKNS Selangor Selangor and Sabah in the 1970s and 1980s. He has donned the Harimau Malaya jersey in the early 1980s and has played alongside the mighty Mokhtar Dahari (Supermokh) – who is one of the inspiration behind the birth of 1972FC.
Always believed the midfield as the integral part of any game, RG is well known for his ability to deceive opponents and bring his team on the offence. More than his playing career, King Raja became the household name in the entire nation when he began his coaching career.in early 2000s.
Harimau Malaya who was once the powerhouse of ASEAN football in 1970s (mightier than South Korea & Saudi Arabia), has seen its status declined over the years and progressively decreased fans flocking in to the stadium to watch their own national team play. Instead; Brazil, England & Italy were part of their life when it comes to football, and their own national team were left out in the cold.
When the bad became worse, only one savior who took up the challenge to revive the beaten tigers, and none other than King Raja! First up, he took over the Harimau Muda team (National U-23) and brought the team to their first SEA Games gold medal in 20 years; beating the odds of Thailand and Vietnam who were the favorites in everyone’s eyes. The underdogs didn’t stop thereafter, streak of successes to follow next as he was promoted to be the coach for Harimau Malaya (National Team) and the team won the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2012 (the most prestigious cup in SEA region) under his tutelage. Without hesitation, he was honored with “Datuk-ship” title and was called Datuk Rajagobal by the entire nation.
Without realizing, these successes is soon to backlash his own involvement as the national coach as the fans were even more hungry for more “next level” successes and wasn’t favorable of the “experiments” done by him for the team. King Raja resigned as the national coach in 2013 when his contract ended with Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) in December.
After 2 years absence in the football scene, King Raja is finally back after signing a deal with Sarawak for the 2015/2016 season. He, who was very much missed by the fans, will for sure bring some spice back to the footballing scene and prove his worth as a respected coach and footballing icon in Malaysia.
Learning the culture of social football club with the Samurais.
Barely even a year, the trend of social football club has massively gained the attention of football fans around the world. Retro jerseys with unique printing and dope patches has set a new level of creativity within an imaginary football club. It’s all about the lifestyle and culture of football and it’s more than just a community. It brings people together and inspires them for something bigger.
About a month ago, I stumbled upon Liga Toquio on Instagram and it really made me interested in meeting them. I contacted Osamu Matsuda, the captain and founder of Liga Toquio to meet up and play a game of football while I’m down in Tokyo, Japan for a business trip. I was set on getting my first social fooball experience in Tokyo.
Breathtakingly beautiful – just one of the many flattering expressions that has been used to describe the land of the rising sun, Tokyo, Japan. Let’s start with Osamu Matsuda. A man with great vision and ideas, he is an Art director for a company called Giono. A true football fan and supporter of Manchester United, he shows absolute passion for the game. A nice guy to have conversation with of sneakers, coffee and streetwear.
Liga Toquio is a social football league started from the vision of Osamu Matsuda. The idea came when Osamu reached out to streetwear retailers in Harajuku to participate in the league. The participants are Atmos, Gallery2, KAMO, Mita Sneakers, SOPH., Styles, Nike Harajuku. Undefeated and Urban Research. The game play follows according to the Nike ‘Winner Stays’ format. The team that concedes a goal loses a player. Teams are encouraged to play open-minded, less-structured football, and the next team to score is named the winner who remains on the pitch for the next battle. The league goes on for about two months and the champion of the league will receive a trophy, which they can display proudly at the storefront of their retail. The previous champions were the Undefeated. Who shall be the new champion for the next season or will Undefeated remain undefeated?
That night it was a nice rainy chilly weather when we played a 5v5 game at the Sendagaya Futsal Court in Shinjuku. The game play and style was different compared to what we usually play. It involves a lot of quick 1-2 passing and layoff. All in all, it was a great experience learning the culture, lifestyle and most importantly meeting new friends. A big shout out to Osamu for making this trip memorable with the warm hospitality. We shall visit Tokyo again in the future. That’s it for now and more #1972FCTravel coming soon. Arigatou gozaimashita. Play the game and stay humble!
Sound of Victory:
You know how they say that never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world? For me, 1972FC feels like the definition of that statement, when your passion becomes your purpose.
Is always our nature to search for true potential, always a dreamer. A dream that drives us to live, a dream that motivates us to move, to push harder and a dream on day to inspire others.
Well, because when it comes to making the world better, football isn’t going for a draw.

#JerseyOnPoint : Reppin’ the Amakhosi, #throwback to the Kaizer Chiefs Home Kit for the South African Premier League 11/12 season.
That season came with a unique twists, the home jersey ran out in a sunburst horizontal like black and gold striped. The Amakhosi’s crest represented the tribal people and roots in the heart of Johannesburg’s Soweto township, which is the founding factors and most influential aspects of the Amakhosi’s past, present, future.
The fans are proud to skin the jersey. #Amakhosi4Life and forever fearless.
