‘Anenemy’ Plastic waste, Cotton embroidery

“My work is always materials-led. Pieces are largely unplanned, driven forward in response to the possibilities and limitations of specific media. I enjoy keeping my work in a state of flux, often employing unfamiliar materials, or enforcing randomness on my marks, colors or shapes, to encourage things to evolve in new directions. It is this process of harnessing creativity which interests me; the balance between randomness, conscious decision-making and instinct.

Recently, I have been employing waste plastic to create sculptural pieces. I became interested in ‘locking’ waste within the artwork, when I learned about the drastic shortcomings of current plastic recycling. I began collecting and incorporating my everyday waste materials, principally plastic bottles and carrier bags, to highlight issues around single-use plastic products, waste in our oceans and illegal plastic dump-sights overseas. 

Hand stitching plastic can be difficult, but I enjoy the challenge of bending the material’s inappropriateness to my will and the playfulness involved in creating unexpected outcomes from over-familiar, often ugly materials, presenting them anew, either disguised, or shown in a fresh light, enhanced by fabric or stitch.”

‘Organic Tubular’ Oil on Melamine

Giovanni Giupponi is an Italian artist born in Trento on June 20, 1977. He currently lives and works in his hometown. He graduated in D.A.M.S./Art at the Literature and Philosophy faculty of Bologna University. He began his artistic career in 2014; mixing and alternating his interests, which range from painting and architecture to music and photography, with the intent of creating works with a predominantly experimental feel that nowadays strays into design. 

His interest in electronic music comes out in all his works, which have a pronounced rhythmic feel. It is a vital thrust, a creative impulse that finds its roots in philosophy, with a special mention to Gilles Deleuze but also touching on Zaha Hadid’s organic shape architecture in the form of shapes in a continuous metamorphosis. “The Baroque does not refer to an essence, but rather to an operative function, to a characteristic. It endlessly creates folds. It does not invent the thing: there are all the folds that come from the Orient, Greek, Roman, Romanesque, Gothic, classical folds.... but it twists and turns the folds, takes them to infinity, fold upon fold, fold after fold. The characteristic of the Baroque is the fold that goes on to infinity” (G. Deleuze, The Fold, Einaudi, 2004, p. 5). Fascinated by the expressive potential of the fold, or twist, he elaborates his research into the organic. His works bring to mind the “the folds of the wind, of water, of fire and earth and subterranean folds” (G. Deleuze, The Fold, Einaudi, 2004, p. 10) and much more. 

The object of his search is the curve that is continuously changing, drawing from Deleuze’s metaphysical chaos, irregular and incalculable, like in parametric architecture bent on creating fluid and biomorphic configurations. Biomorphism is one of the most important iconological forms in architecture and art. The model can be the human body (anthropomorphism), the animal kingdom (zoomorphism), the plant kingdom (fitomorphism). Reference to biology comes in response to an idea of architecture as a “living” organism. Be it Santiago Calatrava’s refined “exoskeletons”. Be it “skins” that allow a building to “breathe” and synthesize solar energy (Agbar Tower in Barcelona). Be its reference more superficial (Kunsthaus in Graz, Selfridges in Birmingham), or be it wonderfully iconological (“The Net” Olympic Stadium Beijing). The camouflage and metaphorical circle between man and nature renews itself through evermore evolved architectures: the maximum organic “naturalness” of the biological universe, with the maximum technological “artificialness”. It is about hidden dimensions of the universe, about dimensions that escape our perception, it is the most intimate part of matter and spirit. The universe is made of curves. 

However, Giovanni Giupponi, is not limited to the development of the organic, but delves into other types of research; for example minimalism, geometric art and abstract art.

‘The Dancing Couple’ Acrylic on Stone

“When life throws stones at you, you convert it into a beautiful piece of art! As a rock designer, I bring life to a monochromatic natural resource by painting it with vibrant acrylic shades. Stones are the sturdiest nature’s creation and my love for them has been an inspiration to the artwork I design. I have been blessed to express my creativity through these humbled and magnificent geological formations. I follow a three-step process to express my imagination on the rocks: Applying a base coat, Sketching out a rough design and (my favorite) painting with acrylic colors! Capturing the reflection of light on the finished art pieces is what I have been exploring in the recent times. 

Through my art, I aim to give the viewers a glimpse into some of the fabulous moments in my life; be it viewing New York’s skyline or dancing with my love during sunset in California. I would like my art to convey to a thousand hearts out there in the universe that: It’s up to you, how you would like to transform a blank and grayed out version of your life into a colorful spectrum, no matter how ‘big or small’ it may seem, no matter how many ‘spots’ of mistakes it has experienced and no matter how many ‘irregularities’ it has been through. I love to speak with colors through my art on rocks!”

Ondra Mikl (Don Mirakl) comes from the town of Bzenec, situated in a wine area in the Czech Republic. He engages in digital art, automatic drawing, action painting and experiments with various materials. The main topic of his work is portraits and a series of mystic visions titled Dítě věčnosti (Child of Eternity). 

Besides fine art he also works with music. He composed music for the projects Uchožrout (Eareater) and Lunapark. He teaches art and IT at a grammar school in the town of Strážnice. At a theoretical level he occupies himself with art history, philosophy, psychology and anthropology.

Yelena Lewis is a visual artist working out of a studio in Geneva, Switzerland. She works primarily in oil on canvass, though she also uses other media, including but not limited to: ink and pen, tempera on wood, engraving, sculpture, mixed media, and acrylics. 

Yelena’s style is figurative, and she works in a variety of formats, with paintings ranging in size from 7 x 5 cm to 100 x 120 cm. Often monochromatic, these works are adaptable for display both in home and professional environments.

Born in Soviet Russia in pre-Perestroika Moscow but having lived in a variety of European countries and having traveled globally, Yelena’s art is influenced by the diversity of human cultural experience and the universality of human emotion. She is best known for her playful yet tragic profiles but has also been known to paint powerful living urban and rural landscapes.
