The regulator in ADHD-brains:
ADHD studies have shown that ADHD-brains have problems REGULATING their focus while working.
Regulating focus are need when we are doing projects at work, school and even in the free time.
We need it to get an task done.
The part of the brain of that are in charge of it calls the prefrontal cortex.
That unfortunately the part that are underdeveloped in people that have the ADHD-brain
I know that the prefrontal cortex have a lot of other functions and jobs but unfortunately I will not write anything about it in this text.
As I will be focusing of the topic focus and regulating focus.
What makes it hard to focus on tasks.
What makes it easier to focus on tasks.
Through the text I will be calling this part of the brain’s task. THE REGULATOR.
The regulator who’s only job is to make sure you start an project and hold focus when given the task or stop you when you need to shift focus to do another task.
The regulator goal are to preforming and producing great consistent results through the whole process when presented with a task.
The regulator should help you focus on important task even if it’s hard or boring which then gives your some hyper focus when working.
But the regulator in ADHD-brains doesn’t priorities things from most to least important. The regulator choose tasks that gives most rewards. Dopamine is one of them.
Dopamine are what gives us an feel of happiness, curiosity and satisfaction. It’s the satisfaction of completing task and feeling pleasure when working on it. It’s what makes us happy when doing the task.
In other words without the dopamine we can’t find things pleasing or interesting.
Studies shows that the ADHD-brains have an high cravings for dopamine and often shift their energy and hyper focus to the tasks find fun or interesting.
The task that are giving the most dopamine during the task. Are what makes them the happiest and more likely to hyper focused.
When ADHD-brains are hyper focus the striving to make the task as perfect as they possible can. Analysis the texture colors, taste smell sound you name it. If it’s something they find wrong they do it over again until perfect. It’s because the task takes the highest priories or importance to them and should be acknowledged as such.
While if the ADHD-brains are shown an tasks they find boring, hard or to easy. It have the opposite effect as they tendency to zone out and not focus enough to even wanting or able to start the task.
When that happens they usually wants to get this task done as quickly as possible and don’t gives a shit how overall results are looking. The task to them didn’t get the high priorities in their mind and they don’t care if it’s done to the bare minimum.
So what does it means for the regulator in an ADHD-brains.
The regulator in ADHD-brains have a harder time shift between the things that gives them more dopamine to the things that makes them uncomfortable and bored.
The regulator in an normal-disorder-people are able to shift focus from the fun task and the boring task without any or little difficulty. The regulator brain knows that it’s an high priority and therefore should be handled with much care an consideration as any other task.
As when the Regulator to an ADHD-brain is that. Not every task are priorities and not every task get that hyper focus mindset to complete the task to an minimum standard.
The regulator have to stop the ADHD-brain hyper focus from shifting to an task with more dopamine driving task. Which are proven more often more difficulty with starting the tasks due to the lack of dopamine in the task.
This may cause the ADHD-brains to stay longer on task they find give more dopamine.
When finally pulled away from hyper focus the ADHD-brain will stay in this awkward standby by the new task until they find something else fun/interesting/easy that makes the task more fun.
When they find the dopamine then the race is on again. Let’s the game begin!
While we have addressed the dopamine parts in the regulator main job.
The regulator biggest block is not always the lack of dopamine.
The biggest block the regulator will encounter is the unexpected ADHD-brains lacking of basic need for human survival or emotional handling.
What I mean with the things as basic human need it’s things as needing to eat, pee, poop and sleep. Or when the ADHD-brain are consumed by extrem emotions such as fear, anxiety, tired, boredom, uncomfortable, loneliness, anger and sadness.
When The regulator face those kind of encounter they find the job ten times more harder as the regulator have to deal with those issues before shifting the person with an ADHD-brain to hyper focus to the task the need to get done.
