The corridor lights flickered above her as she walked through the academy hall. Everything here looked too clean to be real — too perfect, too controlled.

Kaiden Rook stood against the far wall like he didn’t belong in the same world as everyone else. Hands in his pockets. Head slightly tilted down. Like he was waiting for something he already knew would go wrong.
People avoided him without looking like they were avoiding him.
That was the first warning.
Until fate — or bad timing — decided otherwise.
Someone bumped into her shoulder hard.
Books fell across the floor.
A small silence spread around her.
a hand reached down first.
Kaiden picked up one of her books without rushing. Like he had all the time in the world.
“…You should be more careful,” he said calmly.
“I didn’t drop them on purpose.”
Because he didn’t walk away.
He just stood there — holding her book — like he was deciding something he hadn’t told her about.
“…Stay away from Sector Three after dark.”
“That’s not your business.”
A faint shift in his expression.
Almost like he was amused… but not enough to show it fully.
“…That’s where you’re headed.”
And she didn’t like that he knew.
Elara reached for her book.
Their fingers brushed for half a second.
But it felt… wrong to ignore.
Kaiden didn’t move immediately.
“…Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” he said.
Like he hadn’t just changed the direction of her entire day.
Then quietly whispered to herself:
