Trapped inside a cage

Metropolis review
The film â Metropolisâ came out in 1927 which  for the time it came out it was way ahead of its time, according to imdb the budget was around 5 million Reichsmark which would be around 200 million dollars; making it one of the most expensive movies at the time, which means that the director Fritz lang was putting a lot of ambition into his film to say the least. I remember the first time I saw metropolis, my dad was just scrolling through netflix, and he found it saying that it was one of the most influential movies ever made, even though most of the film felt like a blur at the time I still though it was great. But now after watching a few years later I felt mesmerized, like I was watching an alternate universe, but whatever it was it was making me enlightened. But the question I kept feeling was, why?  Iâve seen many dystopian movies in my life and even though this movie came before pretty much all of the rest it felt more revolutionary, and even though I watched it before, this felt like a completely new experience.
One of the most interesting aspects of the films isn't actually the movie but it is the history of the film itself that has its own value and I find it incredibly important to anyone that chooses to know about it before seeing the movie because without it youâll be left scratching your head in confusion. When the film came out in 1927 it had mixed reviews from audiences, one of the main complaints was that it was too long; the original cut of the film was over 2 and half hours long, (even by todayâs standards thatâs long) so they had to cut the film almost a full hour short for it to make it to theaters, because of this much of the film was lost; it took decades but the final product is about 2 hours and 28 mins, permanently missing about 10 mins of the film, what makes this interesting though is that the restored shots were slightly damaged, and this is very noticeable because they have an incredibly poor quality, sometimes itâs only a few seconds other times it can take a full scene. These donât ruin the movie, in fact they make the films more interesting because you get to think about how the theses scenes got taken out of the film. As for the scenes that were completely missing, well luckily  in the newest version of the film the text would summarise the missing events, most of the time I wouldnât notice since it was mostly a few missing seconds of a character doing a simple action but there was one moment in the film where it definitely felt like it was missing a lot, Iâm not going to explain the scene because it would be a lot of explanation with the story and characters but once you watch it youâll know what Iâm talking about because I have no idea why they would take out a scene as big and as important as that one.
The film is about a dystopian society that is deeply divided between the working citizens  and the city planners, when freder the main character finds out about the workerâs harsh environment he tries to help them but his father and a mad scientist create the very first machine man and try to sabotage the working classâ hopes for a better future. The main characters in the film werenât anything special at least for me, but that didnât make them uninteresting since all of the main characters are nothing less of iconic, freder the main character was full of emotion and ambition throughout the whole movie and I was always amazed every time I watched him because he really fit the role of the protagonist in a dystopian sci fi, someone that wanted to help others even if it meant endangering himself, maria however takes the spot for the best character and the actress in the movie with her first looking like an angelic figure that only wants peace, and for them to stay strong in such hard times for the working men, but once she is capture and use her body to create the machine man her actresses acting goes a full 180 and starts exaggerating her movements and twitching her eye constantly and seeking attention with her body and aggressive behavior, And when she appears once again she still has the same spirit as how she was in the beginning but is now willing to fight and actually do something to help her people and not be tricked into accidentally destroying their city. The filming, cinematography and editing where quite possibly the most ambitious uses in film at the time; the film is in black and white but I feel like it would have been better to have seen it color, because I could only think about how amazing  the shots of the city and the garden at the beginning could have looked like if they had a some color, the scenes in the factory however look amazing in black and white, since they lack of color demonstrates the joyless life the workers have to deal with all day everyday, the shots in the factory where my favorite shots because every character working in the machines look like machines themselves they follow a pattern and continue that pattern every day until their shift is over.
The movie is split into three parts which helps the flow of the film and thorough the movie, the most obvious symbolism I saw was that of religion, how mariaâs name was close to the virgin mary and how her sanctuary is covered with crosses, but when it goes to the city and especially the scientistâs laboratory you find the seven deadly sins and pentagrams in almost every door, symbolising that what they are doing (creating the machine man)is against god and by them creating it in the shape of maria, a kind woman with the respect and love of others she could be almost a devilish figure that tricked the working class into destroying underground and almost killing their children.
This film is a clear depiction of the poor vs rich hierarchy and it is shown in a way that is almost universal and that every country that has gone through something like this in their past can understand. One thing that I canât exactly call a complain but rather something that I feel the need to say is that the film ends rather positive and doesnât leave too much for the imagination sure the is no more underground and who know if the city people will accept the working class but it is an ending that is satisfying enough not to think too much about.even though this film came out almost 90 years ago it still holds up and I honestly cannot believe a movie with such ambition and passion and scale could of been made during when the spirit of germany was at their lowest. Maybe thatâs why the film had a nice ending, because it wanted to tell their audience that there is always hope for a better future.
Fight club review
I finally got around to watch âFight Clubâ and it quickly stood out to me as one of the best movies Iâve recently seen, I've only heard good things out of this movie so I was getting kind of nervous before watching it because I didnât even know what to even expect out of it, Iâve only really heard that it is a satire âcomedyâ and that it has a major twist. aside from the outstanding way the film was presented in nearly every way from the writing, and acting to the editing and sound editing and mixing the things that I heard Even though I didnât really though it was supposed to be funny, but I did get a laugh every now and then, what the movie really showed was the satire of almost everything with media, society, even masculinity; which is something I didnât even expect.
this films definitely talked about this that made me think about myself and how I fit into this society and how men are treated and what they expect of us. for thousands of years men have had to use our strengths for the betterment of our survival, but that was thousands of years ago, now however, we are pretty much being kept under a wall in which men are no longer useful in any way whatsoever, men arenât strong mentally at all, which is something women are good at, so to have us act like women, men will undoubtedly find a way to redirect all that energy, and that was the conflict of fight club, all the men felt like they lost their sense of âpurpose.â even in the movie itself they talk about how without a male role model, they turned violent. the only way they could redirect that violence is by punching and getting punched, they finally feel like they can be normal members of society because they now have a place where they can feel like âmen.â Of course Iâm not really praising what they did, eventually all that energy to redirect with fights turned into a terrorist group desperate to call society out on the way that theyâre being treated. hell they even end up calling out movies themselves by constantly breaking the fourth wall and at the end putting that one frame of porn, like they know that this is just another stupid movie to make money despite the fact that thatâs what the movie itself criticizes.
this was truly a mind bending experience that uniquely criticizes many aspects of our society many of which are still relevant, even after almost 20 years and I hope more people of the new generation watch this movie and understand what we are doing to the people to our purpose as humans and to what we are doing to men, Iâm not saying we shouldn't have strong women, but like in the film fighting wasnât a competition, it was just a way to let go, and if we keep telling society that men shouldn't act like men, weâll be in more danger than we think.
