About one year after their marriage, while they lived together in the Jingshi Lan Zhan woke up next to an empty space beside him, and he felt the fear crawling up his stomach, making him sit up in a moment of adrenaline.
Where was Wei WuXian? He had to be there, 5 am in the morning, like always, like everyday... but he wasn't there.
Lan Zhan searched around the room with his eyes, trying to spot him elsewhere into the darkness. But there was no signal of him at all. He was nowhere to be found. Hurriedly, Lan Zhan got out of the bed, put on his robes and walked towards the door, trying to keep his calm.
When he was about to open it to go outside, the door opened by itself, revealing a smiling Wei Ying with both hands occupied holding a metal tray full of fruits and some other things Lan Zhan didn't even cared to watch at the moment.
The later did a step back, letting his factions relax, swallowing down the lump in his throat. Wei WuXian was there. With him. It wasn't a dream.
"Good Morning, husband of mine. Do you know what day is today?" Wei Ying asked, making his way to the table, closely followed by his man.
He only received a "mh" as an answer, but it was enough for him.
Slowly and carefully, he left the tray on the table and turned around to face his recently awakened yet incredibly handsome husband, his cheeks still puffy, not wasting a second before holding his face with both hands and kissing him deeply.
He caressed the soft skin of his cheeks with his thumbs, slowly pulling out from the kiss. A soft smile plastered on his face just from watching him. "Then... I must congratulate you in the greatest ways." Wei Ying said, still holding him closely.
Lan Zhan didn't cared at all. Being like this was all he wanted, yet he was curious about why his husband had to wake up so early in the morning. He didn't get time to ask, because he was dragged to the table by the hands cupping his face. He followed the lead doing little steps so that he wouldn't stomp on Wei WuXian's feets by accident, holding onto his husband's waist. This made Wei Ying laugh adorably, enchanted by the sweet ways of his Lan.
Both took a seat at the table in front of each other, and Wei Ying started to show him one by one the things he had brought on the tray. "Okay, you better be ready, because I made these myself, and you know... I'm not sure they're as tasty as they are supposed to be... But! I did my best to follow the recipe. Alright? That means, no spicy."
Wei Ying anticipated, making a little pout as he raised the pot lid. Some steam came out from it at the beginning, but as soon as it dissipated a bit, Lan WangJi saw a few white bunnies made of dough. Somewhat confused, he looked at Wei Ying wanting to know what they were. "Buns?" He asked, taking one with his hand. The bunnie's face was craved in a delicate manner, making Lan WangJi smile slightly at the image of his husband drawing so slowly, preventing a bad face on the dough.
"No! I mean. Yes? But, no! They are birthday buns!" He explained with a big smile. "Come on, try it." Wei Ying insisted, showing his happiness with a huge smile across the table. Lan Zhan looked at the hot bun he was holding and reached out to take a bite, almost apologetically. The bunnies were so cute.
Sweetness and some acid invaded his mouth. Pineapple mixed with a bit of lemon. He munched it with pleasure, happy that it was indeed really well done and tasty. He would have eaten it even if it wasn't, since Wei Ying made them just for him, but he was happy that his husband's intentions were fulfilled and accomplished.
When he swallowed, he looked at his man's face and offered a smile. "Indeed, they are really good." At this, Wei WuXian's smile widened even more and he proceeded to show the rest of the things in the tray. There were some strawberries chopped in half alongside oranges and pears, and some flowers just for making it prettier. There was a cup as well, were Wei Ying poured his husband a herbal tea, pleasantly.
"Are you not eating?" Lan Zhan wanted to know, finishing his birthday bun.
"Oh, I have something even tastier in mind." He implied, directing a nasty look over him, yet filled with the softest smile. "But that's for later. Eat first, then I have another surprise." Lan WangJi nodded before taking a sip from the tea, his hand gripping the a handful of his robes as if they were his own self control.
He continued eating in silence, under the intense yet longing stare of his Wei Ying.
During their time together, Lan Zhan had noticed that Wei Ying could be staring at him fondly for hours, just observing and taking him in, details and corners, like he was just the most precious thing in the world. It was very usual that he would only stop the intense staring because they ended up intertwined on the spot. Not that Lan WangJi would complain about that. He too, would look at his husband for hours straight, fascinated by his presence, by his cheeks full of life and the expressiveness of those grey eyes.
The love was not only shown on the bed. It had been everywhere, from the most littlest details to surprises every other day. His husband was the most loving person in the world, the sweetest, always remembering his Lan that he was very loved. Lan WangJi took another bun-ny with careful hands and ate it slowly.
Wei Ying stretched a hand over the table, asking for Lan Zhan's with his palm up. WangJi let go of his robes and complied, holding the rough hand in his.
"A-Zhan," Wei Ying called, and Lan WangJi's heart trembled in excitement. He looked up, meeting the soft gaze.
"A-Ying," the answer was soft, yet firm. Wei Ying bit his lower lip between his teeth, trying to mask the growing smile, and failing completely. Lan WangJi basked in this.
"A-Zhan, happy birthday my love," he congratulated, taking his husband's hand to his mouth to place small kisses on the skin, "I hope you're liking your gifts."
"Wei Ying is all I need, and I like him very much." He answered honestly, moving his cup to one side with his free hand, sensing that the conversation would go onto a different pathway.
Wei WuXian laughed at his husband's antics, a hint of mischief sparkling in the way he titled his head to one side, "Are you saying that I'm your gift?"
"Are you not?"
"Aiya, A-Zhan, I will if you want me..." the answer didn't get to hang in the air, when they were already scrambling to their feets and clashing against the other. Wei Ying held him close, one arm around his neck and the other trailing down his back. Lan WangJi's hands were easily finding their way, opening his husband's robes, soon touching hot naked skin.
They didn't stop walking until Wei Ying's back hit the mattress, WangJi's hands at both sides of his head. His laugh was drowned by his husband's lips once again. If that kiss was a little bit more tender, just a little bit more slower, embed in the memories of the before, none of them mentioned.
Soon, five A.M became ten, and then twelve. They spent the entire morning attending to themselves, lips long swollen and bodies marked like they were a clean paper.
For Lan WangJi, since forever, maybe, it became his most significant birthday, spent in the marvelous company of his husband, his soul mate, his lover.
