The Virgin of Guadalupe - An Ongoing Miracle

The shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world, with an estimated record number of over 6 million pilgrims visiting there between December 11 to 12, 2009 in honor of the anniversary of the 1531 apparitions.

Here are some of the amazing things that science has discovered about the tilma, the cloth on which the image is displayed:

·         Studies made on the eyes of the image have detected that when the eyes are exposed to light, the retina contracts, and when the light is withdrawn, it returns to a dilated state – just as happens with a living eye.

·         The temperature of the tilma maintains a constant temperature of 98.6F degrees (37C), the same as a living human body.

·         A doctor who placed a stethoscope below the black waistband heard rhythmic beats at 115 pulses per minute, the same as that of a baby in the maternal womb.

·         Scientific studies have not been able to discover the origin of the colorization, nor the way the image was painted. NASA scientists confirm that the paint material does not belong to any known element on earth.

·         The rough material of the tilma has a lifespan of no more than 20-30years. Nonetheless, during the almost 500 years of the tilma’s existence, the image of Mary remains as strong as it was on the first day. Science cannot explain why the material has not disintegrated.

·         In 1791 muriatic acid accidently spilled on the tilma. Over a 30-day period, without any special treatment, the affected fabric re-constituted itself miraculously.
