So This Is how I think the marauders would act of one of them went missing on a mission so here it is: ( ps: James is missing in this scenario)
Lily being scared out of her mind because she can't shake the feeling that something horrible has happened and rubbing her baby bump wondering what will happen.
Sirius showing up at the door cuz "James was supposed to be back 2 days ago"
Remus holding Lily's hand and talking to her, telling her out will be alright but they both know that might not be true.
Peter coming "has anyone heard from James yet"
No one being able to sleep so Lily dragging the mattress and blanket from her and James empty bed and putting on the living room floor for her, Sirius and Remus ( Peter passed out on the couch). All 4 of them telling each other words of comfort and support.
James showing up 2 days later, bloody, bruised, ribs broken, but alive. Being James Potter, he teased them endlessly about waiting all night for him, but the others just shook it off. Because James could pretend it was silly until the next time someone went missing.

So a few years ago I thought about the rule : no students out of bed at night! And then I thought that the marauders had most definitely loopholed their way out of that. I bet they would just levitate their beds and go all around the school, and if they got caught then :" But Minnie! We aren't out of bed!"
I can TOTALLY see this
So I imagine when Lily told James she was expecting, James panicked and left. He tells the marauders to meet him for an out of the blue boys night. Obviously the other marauders wonder what this is about. After a couple hours, when James is completely wasted, he starts sobbing "he is gonna be so small. How do I protect him?" When they realize that Lily must be pregnant. They have to take him home.
Meanwhile Lily is at home, scared, worried, and more than angry at her husband. But then Sirius and Remus drag a drunk James through the door. James, slurring his words, says " I'm sorry for running away. I got scared" Lily's heart kinda melts. She goes to speak but James shushes her. " Shh Lils I'm taking to my kid. They ( Sirius, Remus and lily start laughing. James continues " do you know quidditch? Oops Silly me ofc to don't. Don't worry, I'll teach you and but up a broom. I'll embarrass to with your friends in the platform. I'll be there when to graduate Hogwarts. I'll help you find your first house. I'll be a awesome grandpa for your kids.
Except that's exactly what didn't happen.
Ok so in seventh year, after jily got together, I bet Lily would have looked after the boys after the full moon. She would wait up for them and the would put all the beds together in their dorm and all sleep close to each other.
Now one full moon, Lily has fallen asleep, she's woken by someone shaking her urgently. " Whatszit" she muttered groggily. " Lily" says Sirius, his voiced laced with worry and urgency. " It's James. He's hurt." That made Lily shoot up like a bullet. What?. Sirius pulled off the invisibility cloak, to see him half carrying an pale, unconscious James. He's covered in blood. Breathlessly, Sirius says " he got hurt. I had to bring him back, he lost a lot of blood. I have to go back. Lily wasn't really listening, her heart had stopped at James. She had to help him. Go back Sirius she says. I'll look after James. He took James up to his bed and revived him with water. He woke up and tried to sit up, forgetting what had happened. He cried out in pain and, without warning, tears sitting to his eyes. Lily noticed. 'James, okay I can help . But it's going to hurt. James clenched his jaw and nodded. She took off his shirt, and for some dittany. Are you ready? She said. "Episkey". "OW!" James cries out. Sorry Lily. It's ok , she replies.
Time skip
She had been doing episkey and dittany for quite awhile. James is in so much pain. " Lily. Everything hurts" he says in a weak voice. "I know, I know, I'm so sorry. Her voice breaks. But James had passed out. Lily decided now it'll have to heal on its own. She cleans up the wounds and bandages them. She lets James sleep. But she calls asleep next to him. When Sirius and Peter ( tennis obviously on the hospital wing) cone back they smile. Lily is sleeping, head tucked into James chest. And James arms are wrapped around her. Sirius can't help but take a picture. The Girl with flaming red hair and the boy with the untidy black hair.

So let me just paint you a scene. (Jily)
It's the BIGGEST quidditch game of the year. Gryffindor vs Slytherin. There's a huge turn-out. Even Lily is there.
Time skip.
A wild rose of cheers comes from the Gryffindor side. James is on fire. No one can do him. He tricks the keepers easily and can get past anything. The Slytherin team is getting annoyed. Montague, the beater, decides to firociously hit a bludger towards Mary McKinnon, the Gryffindor Seeker. James sees the bludger going WAY to fast, he rushes towards Mary, forgetting the quaffle and everything. Everyones eyes are staring in horror as James rushes to a terrified and frozen Mary. James reached there in time. Thank God. Oh no. Yes James stopped it from hitting Mary by pushing her aside. But he didn't stop it from hitting him. He gets hit hard in the chest. It knocks the wind out of him and he slips off his broom. He is hurtling toward the ground and hits it with a horrifying thud. Many people scream. The Gryffindor team flew down to the ground, wondering if they're captain will be ok. Remus, Peter, Lily, McGonnagall, and Madam Pomfrey are running towards him. When Lily sees him she gasps loudly. His leg is in a weird angle and he's concerned in blood. Madam Pomfrey takes him to the hospital wing, and the game is postponed. Sirius,Remus, Peter , Lily , and the rest of the Gryffindor team won't leave his side. "out, out. " Says Madam Pomfrey, he can't have visitors. The Gryffindor team leaves, but the other for stay. After an hour or two, Sirius, Remus and Pete left, to check on him later. But Lily didn't move. She knew she was going to get teased for this. But, as much as she pretended she didn't, she cared about him. A few more hours go by and Lily falls asleep. Eventually, James wakes up, everything hurts. He feels a gentle pressure in his hand, and sees Lily sleep on her chair holding his hand. He smiles gently. When Lily wakes up, he pretends he just woke up. But he didn't.
A few days later, James sees Lily sleeping on the Gryffindor common room couch. " God, she's so perfect" he thinks. Flaming red hair slayed all around her, pale skin with millions of freckles. She's a wonder. He gently takes get to her dorm. But when he goes to leave, he didn't know, it was very hard to hear, but Lily whispered one word. " stay".
I freaking bet that the marauders always used to use Sirius for home work excuses. " The dog ate our homework sorry" And they would stage it publicly do their would be witnesses. Then in class, they would get away with homework lateness. Now, one day James wants to try. And the students in Barnabas the Barmy's corridor are shocked when they see a huge stag, galloping down the hall, and snatching parchment from a grinning Sirius.
Sirius Black had a very long and annoying Sherlock Holmes phase and you can't convince me otherwise.

Sirius: rule one of the bro code, James. RULE ONE.
James: Come on, guys—
Peter: *procures a six inch thick leather bound volume with BRO CODE on the front in golden letters, opens it to page one* Right here. Bros before hos.

lily evans marching into the Gryffindor Quidditch locker room after a team victory, finally ready to own up to her feelings for the team captain. said team captain emerging from his post-victory shower with only a towel wrapped around his hips. he’s absolutely shocked to see the redhead standing there, and he can’t tell whether she’s plotting his death or if she’s getting ready to snog him or if she is even real at all.
“Lily?”
“Don’t say a word.”
“Lily, I—”
“Shut up, James. I need to tell you something that I should’ve told you a long time ago but didn’t know how. I’ve been feeling like this way for a while I think but I’m just finally figuring out what it is and I don’t even know if you’ll understand or feel the same way but—Christ, James, why are you looking at me like that?!”
“…because I can’t see for shit without my glasses on and I really wish you’d let me grab them real quick before you continue so I can replay a non-fuzzy memory of this moment in my mind forever.”

okay head canon: Sirius and James were the two class clowns (always bouncing off each other and disrupting the class) and remus sat in front of them (before they were friends). They would constantly throw paper, pens (anything really) at the back of his head and try and get him to talk to them. “Remusssss come onnnn, a five minute break won’t hurt anyone!!!” usually he ignores them or flips them off but one day he turns around “FINE BLACK WHAT DO YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT?!” “Mr Lupin, Mr Black, detention 6pm my office please, oh and you Mr Potter i don’t see what’s so funny?”
In summary by the end of the evening’s detention moony was roped into an elaborate prank with his best friends to be.
Why Lily decided she liked James Potter
. He saw someone having a panic attack and cast a spell so they could breathe.
.He was a total feminist, he dyed his hair pink for a month, to protest against gender discrimination.
. He tried to apologize to Snape. Tried. Snape beat him up and James let it happen.
. He spent 3 hours talking with Marlene after she found out her parents died.
.He was James Potter, and she couldn't help it.
Jily Headcannon:
I bet in the whole month of December, James would keep following Lily around with mistletoe and I would drive her crazy. There was a huge betting pool on whether she would kiss him or punch him first. Eventually Lily gets so sick of it and kisses him hard on the lips then says " there. Now put away that bloody plant" . And James is just standing there, starstruck.
Sirius lost a lot of money to Remus that day
Headcannon that Ginny sees Harry wolfing down his food and makes a joke about it. He grins and says " Old habits die hard. I had to fight Dudley for food all the time. You at least knew you were going to eat everyday". Ginny's smile fades. "Y-you didn't get to eat everyday?". She resists the urge to eat more potato's.
And the next day, the Dursleys car is egged.

Headcannon :
I bet if Lily and James had survived, if Neville was chosen instead, that whenever Harry would get in trouble or pull a prank there would be a HUGE betting pool on whether the next howler would be James congratulating Harry, or Lily reprimanding him. And after the howler has spoken, you can see Dumbledore discreetly handing McGonnagall 10 galleons.
Headcannon that:
James and Sirius would probably shot it their guesses while the first years were being sorted. And boo the hat when their wrong. Eventually lily gets roped into it . She gets it right every time, and it pisses them off like crazy.
