Alexander Dempster (aka Bamboo King), born 1955, is a self-taught artist living in Annotto Bay, St Mary, Jamaica. Bamboo King was first inspired to start experimenting with his own work in the early 1990s, while creating signs for the visual artist, Winston Patrick. Patrick recognised Bamboo King’s creative eye and encouraged him to start expressing his visions through sculpture.
Bamboo King has a natural sensibility and connection to nature which can be seen in the way he manipulates driftwood, bamboo and coral; creating innovative and unique sculptures and staffs. For many years he only created works periodically for himself, as a creative outlet. Since 2012, his practice has extended into a wider variety of found-object sculptures and the production of bamboo creatures. He now plans to open up his outdoor studio and invite the public to come and visit his personal collection.
With the beach on his doorstep, and the forest all around him, Bamboo King's work draws heavily on his natural environment. Common subjects in his bamboo sculptures include drag- ons, unicorns, eagles and serpents. He allows the organic shapes and textures of his materials to guide his visions and dictate the creatures he chooses to bring to life.
