Went to my class reunion this past weekend as a bit of an experiment, curious if people change. I'm a huge believer in the growth mindset, traits aren't fixed, nothing is immutable. So we went to my reunion and I made a conscious effort to smile, be out going, and make eye contact with everyone I saw. If it was reciprocated I went up to them to chat. End result: we talked to about six people of the 90 or so that where there. We ate alone at a table for eight, after asking several groups to join us. It was awful. The whole place looked like a drunken version of the high school cafeteria. Same social groups. Same side eye. Same gossip. I looked at my fiancé at the end of our meal and said "welcome to my high school experience." And we walked out the door.

Adventures have been had and continue as well. Mostly good.
The Fluffy Monster is no longer with me. I miss him inexplicably. And am not yet ready for another cat. Though I also miss cats in general.
I’m getting married in less than two months. And am very happy to be doing so. But we keep realizing that our idea of a wedding and the general consensus idea of a wedding are not compatible.
The quantity of people who say “It’s your wedding! You get to do whatever you want!” and immediately follow that statement with “but you have to ______!” Or “As long as you ___________!” Is nearly 100%.
Life has changed in a way that I had not imagined was even possible a year ago.
It took me three days to get home instead of just one.
I'm so hopelessly behind for the start of the semester on Monday that it almost seems pointless to do anything work related. But. I'm gonna get married!

Everything is better in multiples of eight.
The one upside to returning to work in a week is that I will have far less time to dick around on the internet and buy things.

I've been contracted to run a workshop on networking and mentoring for all the new tenure track hires at a university. All of them.
I've got research regarding formal and informal mentoring practices, studies on how well organized mentoring and an accepted environment of informal mentoring are hugely important for success, particularly for women and underrepresented people. I've got activities, discussion and take home materials.
Today, I found out the demographics of my attendees:
White.
Male.
All of them. Every. Single. New. Tenure Track. Hire. Is. White and Male.
I should be teaching a diversity workshop to every single hiring committee at this university.
I'm rapidly running out of summer. My contract starts in two weeks. Tomorrow I start prep work for a workshop.
One of the things on my list to do this summer was update my photojournal (aka scrapbook). So, no time like today...
First thing I needed to do was figure out where I left off. March, 2014.
And that tells you exactly how long I'd been at the end of my rope for my relationship. I haven't even looked at the pictures from anything we'd done since then. I was still taking them, pretty much until last fall, so I hadn't completely given up. But I couldn't bring myself to look at them, let alone sort and catalog them.
I wasn't consciously aware of doing this, though I know I did something similar with a not quite relationship a long time ago.
I don't want to forgot those times, because generally if I'm taking pictures it's because we were having fun, but I am also done with that time in my life. It's been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster today going back through those images and working my way forward to the new relationship.

does anyone else ever forget that men aren’t expected to shave their armpits even though they’re so hairy, and then a guy lifts his arms up and you’re actually fucking shocked because you expect there to be skin but instead you’re greeted with 2 fur trappers, 5 families of elk and an ancient civilization that’s pretty close to inventing flying cars
This reminds me of this one conversation I had with Jess ages ago. I can’t remember the details but I want to share my thinks.
We were probably just chilling at home (I can’t remember what we were doing but that’s unimportant), when Jess said to me something like, ‘ew sorry, I haven’t shaved my armpits.’ Understand that I, somehow, similarly to OP forgetting that men aren’t expected to shave their armpits, I forgot that women were. As I remembered, I suddenly realized how truly ridiculous that is.
I looked at Jess and said (and this goes for everyone reading this), ‘I shaved my armpits once. It was a nightmare; I wouldn’t wish that upon anybody. If you want to shave any part of your body, freaking go for it but don’t let anyone make you if you don’t want to.’
I feel like elaborating a little. Hair is natural. Sure, hairy armpits can get stinky and gross but if that were the reason, dudes would be expected to shave too, but we aren’t So. Conclusion: ??? if ya dont wanna shave.. dont
I had to shave my pits back in like, March for medical testing reasons. Dear god almighty, the following weeks were the most stressful, unpleasant weeks of my life. I’ve never been so itchy.
I’ve never had a problem shaving but a while ago I noticed Eric putting on deodorant and it getting all caked up in his fur and I suggested that he shave his, just with a buzzer. He did and ever since then, he’s kept doing it. He works outside, laying blacktop, so it’s hotter than hell and now that the deodorant actually touches his skin, he’s not as sweaty. It was like a revelation to him.
I clipper only. Shaving is awful, physically uncomfortable. Also, deodorant works way better with hair to hold it in place.
