Preview:

“My, my, my, what do we have here?”

Link’s back is already to the window, careful to keep his movements slow and unbothered as he finishes tucking himself away despite the panic rising inside him and the lingering post-ecstasy wobble in his knees. There is nothing more damning than distress, and he can feel Revali’s gaze on the back of his skull like the tip of a knife.

“Revali!” Zelda replies, her voice pitched high and extra bright. “You’ve arrived!”

The Rito scoffs. “Was there any doubt?”

“No, I only meant—”

“That I’m late?”

“O-of course not. I—”

“Well, the other Champions may have the freedom to come running as soon as your father calls, but I’m extremely busy fortifying our presence in the skies as I am Hyrule’s only defense there.”

Link wipes his chin slowly with his unoccupied hand, eyes dark beneath sweat slick bangs.

“And I just...wrap my hands around it? Near the top?”

“If that’s your inclination,” he says.

She narrows her eyes. “I seek your instruction. I want to do it properly.”

“And I want to assess your instincts.”

She draws her hands back and sets them on her hips. “What instincts? I’ve never done this before.”

“Will you quit being difficult and just take it?”

Urbosa eyes her, a hand coming to rest on the deep curve of her hip. “What do you think, Hylian Champion? Do I need rest?”

“You are getting old,” Link says.

Urbosa drops her head back and the hallway shakes with the rumble of her rich laughter. “I’ll do your job and kick your ass in the morning for that.”

Chapter 10

Briefly, she allows herself to imagine what it might be like if their roles were reversed. If she were the one granted courage and the sword, while he was burdened with wisdom and a dormant power. She’s always felt she had a little too much fire to be holy. Does his evenness suit it better? Would the goddess ignore him? Part of her wants to ask him if he prays, but it might kill her to follow that question all the way through. Somehow, a divine message received secondhand feels worse than not at all. 

She awkwardly holds the Master Sword out to him. “You'll be wanting this back, I suppose.”

Chapter 17: Heartbeat

Link steps stiffly forward, and Princess Zelda raises her hand to the crook of his elbow, her arm so tense and touch so light that the fabric from her gloves barely brushes against him. She stares straight ahead, her jaw locked, her eyes grim. The only warning she gives before starting to walk is a brief, sideways glare, and then she's leading him to the pool of water in the center of the Cathedral.

At the edge of the pool she jerks her hand away, freeing his arm so Link can draw the Sword. He focuses on maintaining as neutral an expression as possible, trying desperately not to show his embarrassment that he still can't draw the Sword cleanly. There's no twist of his arm, no movement, no stretch that allows him to do it in one step, no matter how much time he spends practicing. The Sword is just…too big for his small body.

Preview:

He shifts their bodies so her back is against the side of the bookcase where he can easily cut a glance over her shoulder at the stairs. It’s not the place, and most certainly not the time, but as soon as the top of the last guard’s head disappears, he leans in, relishing the way her lips part hungrily for him, and slips his tongue into her mouth. Her hands snake around his middle and up his back, lips hot and insistent against his.

After several dizzying seconds, he breaks the kiss enough to warn, “We are going to get caught.”

“Sounds like a ‘you’ problem,” she murmurs.

“You still don’t have a shirt on.”

“And yet your hands are unappreciative.”

Chapter 8

Preview:

Zelda’s spent the entire day oscillating like this. Spurning him. Analyzing him. It doesn’t help that he’s a walking ensemble of incendiary idiosyncrasies. Like how he hums when he’s lost in a task or a thought, or the deep, centering breaths he takes when he’s idle, or all the little sounds he makes in lieu of answering “sure”, or asking “what” like a normal person. Grunts with question marks and exclamation points and full stops. Every reluctant observation has become a data point that makes him all the more interesting, attractive, and difficult to repel.

In other words, not only is she incensed by Link’s presence, she’s magnetized to it.

But here, everyone knows him. And unlike at the castle where he has always had a reputation for being silent, the Zora remember when he wasn't. Children who were taller than him the first time he came still barely reach his navel. They stare at him, wide eyes filled with admiration for this boy who grew up so much faster than them.

Preview:

As if hinged at the hip, Link leans his entire torso forward stiffly to accept the cake into his mouth. It’s delicious, of course, but he’s more intrigued by the metal, still warm from her lips, and the slightest hint of her breakfast tea mixed with frosting, and the fact someone once told him really good food should tell a story.

“Like it?” she asks.

The story this slice of cake is telling him is about an inevitability, though the ending is unclear. A fervent collision of their stubbornness? The demise of an undefeated streak? His complete, utter downfall?

He nods anyway.

She flashes a knowing, confident smile. “Would you like more?”

The rising sun of the morning slowly pushes a square of light across the floor. Zelda marches away from Impa and reaches her hand toward it, testing the warmth in the beam. It paints her fingers gold. 

None of this would matter if she could unlock her powers. She and Link would be true equals, and there wouldn’t be this incessant need to seek out sore spots. To press. 

It has nothing to do with his stupid face.

She is a silent princess, the same rare species of flower said to be a gift from the dragons at the genesis of Hyrule. A wild flower born to bless the land and bounty it, now spun into bioengineered flesh, bone, and blood. The flower itself could only survive in the wild; but what of her?

Chapter 5

Preview:

“What?” She sets a hand on her hip, appraising him. “Are you worried about what my father might think?”

Yes, he thinks. Among others.

“No,” he lies again.

Zelda probably wouldn’t get lost, but he could. How embarrassing would it be to request a skywatcher go looking for the Hylian Champion? His friends would have an absolute field day. Furthermore, it’s a direct violation of the brand-new, very clear orders Zelda be escorted at all times. If the king doesn’t have him thrown in the dungeons, Impa certainly will.

“What is he going to do? You are the sword’s chosen. I’ll tell him it’s a necessary part of your training.” She twirls her wrist thoughtfully. “Call it divine...puzzlery.”

A beam of sunlight breaks free of the storm clouds and reaches for her. She looks at him and it’s all golden and hopeful, and he knows there is an edge he’s inching toward, but she’s just so beautiful when she wants something.

And right now, she wants him to do this.

Tales from a Loft

At the bottom of Hateno Village, there stands a house. Old, isolated and, up until recently, empty. In that house, there is a loft. And in that loft, over the past few years, a number of memories have been made. Here are a few of them.

A hundred years ago, Link fell in love with the princess. It was beautiful, and exhilarating, and far beyond what he ever expected when he first drew the sword that seals the darkness. She drew joy from him that he hadn’t experienced in years, reminding him what it was like to live as himself, not just as the Hero of Hyrule.

I can’t believe that we made it!! The month of February is over and so is this @zelinktines fic😭 I loved posting every single day and interacting with everybody, it was such a bright spot through this whole month! Thank you to everyone who read, kudosed, and commented!

And special thanks to @bahbahhh for giving such great feedback for it!!
