PRECISE POETRY: THE ARCHITECTURE OF LINA BO BARDI (2013)
A documentary about this influential Brazilian architect. The Italian-born designer helped to shape a distinctly Brazilian style of tropical modernism, focused on the social and cultural potential of buildings. For those who can’t access this documentary, the lecture LINA BO BARDI IN THE FRAME OF BRAZILIAN ARCHITECTURE (2013) also gives an overview of her work and its cultural context. (Image via bozar)

FREE ONLINE EVENT: PART 2 of ENVISIONING THE MODERN CITY (2021)
London’s Tate Gallery is hosting a second Zoom event on the 9th March, to continue to explore mid-twentieth century architecture and urban planning in cities in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, during “the blurred era of independence to the post-colonial period”. It will look in depth at the way modernist architecture and planning was used by different political and cultural agencies in these regions as “a key apparatus for nation-building, re-imagining identities, and projecting and inventing a new image of the future.” A recording of this session, and both of the sessions from 2nd March will be available on the Liverpool University’s website. Wassily Chair (with spaghetti straps), Marcel Breuer, 1926.
This iconic chair embodies the Bauhaus drive to combine art and industry. It was inspired by bicycle frames, whose lightweight strength and practicality Breuer admired, and was fabricated using the techniques of local plumbers. Originally called the B3, it was later renamed for Kandinsky, who’d requested duplicate for his own Bauhaus quarters. The chair appears in many documentaries on the school and its alumni, (such as BAUHAUS: FACE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (1994)), but also pops up in numerous movies, including X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (2011), 9 ½ WEEKS (1986), and PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (2020). It also features prominently in this clip from the first episode of 90′s sitcom FRASIER (1993). (Image via facebook)
