The Recruit (Part 1)
âCaptain Hughes, you have been idle for approximately twelve minutes. Are you in need of any assistance?â
Sean Hughes jolted to alertness as the preternaturally smooth voice of the Citadelâs AI filled his head. It had only been a few days, but he doubted heâd ever get used to it. There was just something about knowing that he was now connected to this omniscient, omnipresent entity that never failed to creep him out. Maybe if he had been a better Catholic, he would have been better prepared for this.
âIâm fine,â he gritted out as quietly as he could, self conscious about talking to thin air. âI was just thinking⌠and observing!â he tacked on quickly, hoping to mollify the AI without looking like a space case. He was newly recruited to the Citadel; the last thing he needed was to look like a bad investment.
To be fair to the AIââCASS, itâs called CASS,â he reminded himselfâhe hadnât realized he had zoned out for so long. He had just been unprepared from the sheer massiveness of the Citadel. The joint military base that surrounded it was typicalâheâd lived on his fair share of city-sized bases. The Citadel itself, however, was on an entirely different level. When heâd heard they had hollowed out a mountain, he had figured there was some level of hyperbole there, but no. Here it was, the shining beacon of the ultra-modern new age that was paradoxically also a mountain fortress. From the outside, it had looked like the lair of some over the top comic book villain, though Sean figured they were aiming more for the mythological. The Citadel was all about its branding.
