The Positive Psychology Movement
Since World War II the science of psychology has largely been about healing. The focus has been a pathological approach to psychology and the main concern has been to repair damage within a disease model of human functioning (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). Consequently psychology has neglected to focus on the positive aspects of life, for example, there has been little focus on fulfilled individuals and striving communities. To combat this lack of positive aspects, the millennial issue of the American Psychology Association outlined a framework for a science of positive psychology and advocated for a science and profession that will understand and allow for individuals and societies to flourish (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). These authors called for social and behavioral science to articulate a vision of a good life (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). Additionally, the authorsâ stated a need for science to show which actions would result in the experience of psychological well-being, positive outcomes and positive growth in society. The aspiration for the positive outlook is a result of insufficient knowledge on the part of psychologists regarding what makes life worth living and how normal people flourish under ordinary conditions. The aim of positive psychology is to initiate a change in the approach of psychology from a pathological one to building positive qualities (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). In essence, positive psychology turns attention to building strength and competence in individuals instead of the prominent focus on giving care for the suffering and preventing mental health problems. According to Seligman, Steen, Park and Peterson (2005) the pioneers of positive interventions such as Fordyce (1977, 1983) found that happiness levels may be increased by âshotgunâ interventions involving various different exercises. These researchers urge those that are committed to a science of positive psychology to draw on research methods developed to understand and treat mental illness. They found that people were happier and less depressed up to three months after completing exercises aimed at inducing positive emotion. Positive psychology ultimately wants to make people happier by understanding and building positive emotion, gratification and meaning. In pursue of a âfull lifeâ we must increment research done on treating illness and repairing damage with knowledge about nurturing well-being in individuals.
My life is a nutshell.Â
