What even is Merryweather Comics, anyway?
It's easy to get lost in time. It's 2018, Internet Explorer-Chan just became a viral hit, and hundreds of thousands of readers are subscribing to me all at once.
And then, a moment passes. A blink of an eye. It's 2021. We're in the middle of the pandemic. VTubers are suddenly everywhere, and our now formalized art studio is being commissioned by them to do backstories in the form of lore videos. Huh? How did we suddenly become a whole art studio?
Another moment passes. I wake up one day, and it's 2024. Readers are sad that several comics they loved haven't updated in years. How did that happen? It was just a few months of hiatus, wasn't it? But no. I check, and years have passed.
It's 2026 suddenly!! How is time moving so fast!?
Honestly, I am really grateful to all of you readers who stuck around. But at the same time, I can't help but feel things aren't very welcoming to new readers. So welcome to those of you who are joining!
My name is Lucius Merryweather. I'm a webcomic writer who used to commission a lot of artists to draw my webcomic scripts back in 2014 on DeviantArt. As time passed, and more and more artists started working with me, a studio slowly started forming. With the large amount of comics, assistants were needed. Managers. Video editors. And suddenly you have a team of over 30 people. And I guess that's how companies start organically?
I never wanted Merryweather Comics (Merryweather Media?) to become a company. To be honest, I always cringed at the "CEO" title. For the longest time, I refused to refer to it as a company. It was only when it was inevitably heading in that direction, that it became one. And so it became one.
I'm from Denmark. I earned the money to follow my dreams through working as a phone salesman for a year. I love TV shows, movies, and playing online games. I wouldn't say I'm that strange of a person. My most ideal comfort would be a nice cold drink, and marathoning House MD for the 6th time, while playing Final Fantasy XIV.
But suddenly, I pay over 30 people a month? All I wanted to do was write online comics and get cool art for my scripts. Isn't that insane…
So what now? Well, the works must go on! We have many ongoing series, like the ones you see in the attached illustration drawn by the Sally Sinclair artist Ryuuxin! And we are often commissioned by other companies and independent vtubers who want comics or motion animated videos!
I stream as well, as Merryweather on Twitch. I'm a vtuber, too! And I enjoy that a lot. It's funny, whenever a company wants to work with us, they usually try to put my vtuber persona front and center. I always ask them to please not do so. It's already enough that I'm a """CEO""" but that I should also be personified as a cool anime boy in the same capacity, definitely feels far too much. (Oh god lol). Please use Sally Sinclair instead!!! Or my dog form, at least! That one is sufficiently pathetic!!!
In the years since we started, we've worked with many companies. Hololive, Nijisanji, even Atlus commissioned us for a Persona 3 WEBTOON?! That's crazy…
There's also many people online that have mixed opinions of us. "Merryweather Comics" isn't that just gooner slop comics??? Honestly, I don't blame them. I feel like a lot of those old meme comics are just me going through the motions. Oh yes, EverGiven blocked the Suez canal? Why don't we give that Taiwanese dentist artist of ours, Mr. Mao, a script, and have him draw her as a curvy anime girl?
Hahaha… ah, man. It's actually crazy, because I feel like it almost paints me as the type of guy who watches Highschool DXD. In reality, those shows actually make me somewhat uncomfortable. Not that I think there's anything wrong with liking sexy anime girls!! Or sexy anime guys for that matter!! My good friend Lost Pause definitely loves that type of stuff a lot, and all power to him.
But for me, the type of anime I like, is usually a lot more niche.
I'd say my favourite shows are things like Kaiji, Kuuchuu Buranko, or Apothecary's Diary more recently. Or even sci-fi shows like Snowpiercer, or long-running comfort shows like Community. In fact, it's common for me to prefer live action shows over anime.
I do feel there's a sort of disconnect between the sort of comics we often publish, and the sort of comics I'd personally read.
When you think of Merryweather Comics, I think you often think of "Oh yeah, sexy anime girls!!! Femboys!!!" and I'm honestly not sure how it ended up that way. Hahaha. I think I just want to make the readers happy!! That's really it.
Over the years, I've started writing more things that I find align more with what I myself am interested in. Sally Sinclair's 4th wall breaking comedy, and my two short films "God's Ego Death" and "Humanity's End" which are on YouTube.
I've also started giving opportunities to some of our artists, to write their own stories and use our studio as a way to fund their own projects, which is how we got Nerd x Delinquent!
Merryweather Comics / Media? is a continuously growing and changing thing.
I'm not always sure what we're changing into. But we're always moving forward, and I'm happy to say, things have always been getting better. And especially recently, I am very happy with where things have been going.
Our older comics that people were upset about going on hiatus, have returned to updating frequently. Especially My Succubus Girlfriend and One Million Gold, which are now getting weekly updates through GlobalComix! Our VTubing department in the studio have been able to fund several of our voice actors to become vtubers themselves. And my long-term vtuber partner and cousin Lumi (Lumituber) and I are back to guesting at conventions and meeting fans in person again, selling our merch and comics ourselves, like we used to do!
I'm very happy and excited with how things have been going.
And I can't wait to keep going! With all of you!
Thank you!
With Love, Lucius Merryweather Professional DeviantArt-Era Commissioner
