I don't remember sitting down.

I only remember the weight of the red cape.

It felt less like fabric...

and more like crossing a border.

The audience disappeared.

The room disappeared.

Even fear disappeared.

There was only one sound left.

The old electric clipper.

When it finally touched my skin, I didn't feel regret.

Only relief.

The waiting was over.

For the first time in years...

I thought I was prepared.

I had imagined this moment hundreds of times.

But imagination never accounts for silence.

No one smiled.

No one whispered.

No one looked away.

For the first time, I wondered if I had misunderstood what this place really was.

The operator never introduced himself.

He simply unfolded the red cape with practiced precision.

My hands were shaking.

I hid them beneath the fabric before anyone could notice.

The buzzing started.

I wanted to breathe more slowly, but every heartbeat sounded louder than the machine.

For one impossible second, I almost asked him to stop.

Then I realized something.

If I spoke...

I would only be interrupting a decision I had already made.

So I stayed silent.

The room had been prepared hours earlier.

Metal chair centered beneath the lights.

Electrical cable running across the floor.

Observers already seated in silence.

At 8:43 PM, the participant entered wearing ordinary clothes.

At 8:44 PM, the red cape was secured.

At 8:45 PM, the first irreversible line appeared.

They called my number. Never my name.

I stood up.

The room was strangely quiet. Not the silence of a theater before a performance, but the silence of people who already knew what was about to happen.

I could still leave.

No one would stop me.

That was the most unsettling part.

The chrome chair felt colder than I expected.

Then the red cape settled over my shoulders.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

When the collar clicked shut, I realized something.

It wasn't there to protect my clothes.

It was there to mark a decision.

I never looked back at the audience.

I only listened to the faint hum behind me.

When the clipper touched my forehead, I understood that nothing had actually been taken away.

The decision had already been made long before I entered the room.

No one spoke when the clippers touched her forehead.
