I think people are very quick to forget how recent, certainly in the UK (where Davis lives and works and writes primarily for) queer rights have actually been "accepted" (I say this in quotation marks because we still have problems with homophobia and we're experiencing a HUGE backslide in trans rights and increase in transphobia).

Queer as Folk came out in February 1999. Civil partnerships for gay people would not be legally allowed until December 2005, almost 7 years later, and were fought for tooth and nail for that whole time. The first gay weddings in England and Wales were not legally permitted until March 2014, 15 years later. That is only 12 years ago. There are children born that very day that will only be in high school today. Do you understand how recent this is? This is not ancient history. This is yesterday.

I find myself repeatedly having to explain to people that things like just including the character of Captain Jack Harkess – a very plainly, openly queer character – in Doctor Who – a show ostensibly aimed at families and kids – was HUGE at the time. Having him kiss both Rose and The Doctor, with exactly the same posing and framing, made the newspapers. I literally remember it being a double page spread in national newspapers. That episode aired a few months before that 2005 civil partnership legalisation. Torchwood, the far more risqué adult show featuring relationships between women and a core relationship between two men, ran between 2006 and 2011, meaning it ENDED before gay marriages were even legal. I literally remember fans crying that Ianto's character died before he would have potentially been able to marry Jack.

It is easy for people now, especially those who grew up on queer representation like this, to forget how recent it is. How groundbreaking it was at the time that it even existed. But do not be surprised to find the creators of these shows snapping at you for suggesting that they didn't do enough, that they "only walked", when they were running against hatred and rejection and fighting for every inch of progress they made. Rights and representation are built on the shoulders of giants. Don't get complacent because they've supported you this far. There are plenty that would love to tear it all down and reset to nothing.

I painted these fellas to (1) strengthen my anatomy knowledge and (2) practice rendering skin. And I really like how they turned out, so you get to see them too.
