Whenever you say something, you are really saying two things:
The thing you're saying.
That that thing is worth saying.
That is, speech/writing has a cost to it, in the form of energy and time expended doing it, in the energy and time taken by others to listen to/read it, and the thing you are communicating is implied to be sufficiently valuable to worth that trade-off.
E.g. if you meet a woman and she says, "Hi, I'm Becky, I was born on a Thursday," it would be an odd experience because even if 1 applies, 2 clearly doesn't (unless you are running some kind of day-of-birth study or something ig). There is a hidden meaning of, "you should be aware of the weekday of my birth because it is important," that seems to make no sense.
And yet people will often defend something they have said on the basis of it being strictly true, which is unsatisfactory because it only justifies half of what was communicated by the act of saying it.
If Becky comes along to a queer event and says "Hi, I'm Becky, I'm AFAB," you have to understand that that is not just a neutral statement of fact, it also communicates something like this: "I am aware that if I looked and sounded the same but my sex assignment was different I would be treated differently. I am informing you of my sex assignment right now so that you treat me appropriately hereafter."
And that is just straight-up transmisogyny, both in displaying uncritical acceptance of how prevalent transmisogyny is in queer groups, and in demanding exemption from it. It sounds absurd on the face of it that a cis woman describing herself using entirely true statements can be doing transmisogyny, even in the absence of any transfeminine person or any mention of transfeminity at all. But it's true all the same.
And if you try telling Becky she shouldn't say that, she and most of the other people at the event will tell you "but it's true!", "she can describe herself how she likes!", "don't police how other people talk about themselves!", and so on. And people will look at you like you've lost your mind if you start claiming that Becky is abusing you by introducing herself in a manner that doesn't reference you at all.
So, i understand the frustration with the way transmascs seem to envy transfems' bodies and gender presentation, but tbh as a transmasc, i always assumed transfems had similiar feelings? Do you never look at an outfit on someone who had an estrogenated first puberty and think "i wish this would have the same effect on my gender presentation if i wore it too"?
yeah but I'm not a fucking weirdo to them about it. I have the basic respect for their internality required to understand that what for me is aspirational is not so for them, and may be actively uncomfortable or distressing for them
a lot of trans men seem to have no such consideration at all because there are no consequences for making weird, uncomfortable, or invasive comments about a trans woman's body. people aren't watching your behavior (especially your behavior toward trans women) like a hawk ready to strike. you can get away with objectifying trans women, and objectify you do
two years into hrt, a trans guy told me unprompted he'd love to switch bodies with me. which either means
1) my transition has not been sufficiently feminizing and i still look enough like a man to appeal to him
2) he assumed i had a dick specifically and was referring to that
either way is pretty inappropriate. i did not want to be a man's transition goals.
yeah i have on occasion seen people of a variety of genders and envied the way their body developed and mine didn't. i don't think i've ever mentioned it. and as is above, dramatically more often for people aiming to present feminine as well (usually cis women). also as said above, i have never highlighted someone's gender-nonconforming traits as genderfucky unless they specifically told me to do so.
idk. this is weird. don't say this shit.
trans women dont identify with slurs invented for trans men because there arent any and they dont identify with porn terms created to degrade trans men because there arent any and they dont self consciously model their gender presentation off movies meant to demonise trans men as serial killer rapists because there arent any

No spoilers, just themes.
With the finale out now I think a central theme that I've recognized and really adore is "all of these characters are more complex than an audience would appreciate." They are all being squished into a child-friendly set of archetypes, be that by Caine, Jax, or metatextually, the fandom. Caine doesn't want them complaining, swearing or having sex, they just have to go on endless, mindless, youtube-monetizable adventures. He's the ringmaster, he puts them in a bright poppy's playtime ass stage and demands for funny to happen. Meanwhile, Jax doesn't want to address the dire reality of their situation and copes by playing along, treating himself and all the characters as flat archetypes with no internality, so that the elephants in the room can safely be ignored. The fandom, meanwhile, is quietly guilty of all the same things. "Why isn't my favorite character acting in accordance with my headcanon? Which characters are flatly evil so we can hate them? Will they achieve my perfect happy ending? Because if not I'll be mad about it."
It doesn't work. Because they're more complex than that. They're people, they need more, they have emotions and traumas and wants and needs. Ragatha isn't always cheerful, she's not just the mom friend, and she's not some manipulator either. She's a person, trying her best, and very often failing. Pomni isn't always anxious, she's a natural leader and she wants the best for everyone, but she's not perfect either. She's a person, trying her best, and very often failing. And Jax isn't just a villain, he's a very complicated ball of traumas whose consistent first instinct is to push everyone away, hurting others so that he won't get hurt. He's a person, trying his best, and very often failing. She might even be a girl. Zooble isn't just a grump, Gangle isn't just a wimp, Kinger isn't just crazy. They're humans. And humans aren't always good. They're messy, screwed up, complicated things. They're things that can't be flattened down to archetypes, no matter how much Caine, Jax, or the fandom wants it.
The fandom wanted a bunch of cookie cutter adventures with good guys and bad guys, but what we got is just a bunch of people, stuck together, their traumas rubbing up against eachother until something catches fire and explodes. And I think that's way more interesting. I'm glad the show is that. I understand not everyone feels that way, though. A lot of people wanted something less nuanced. But I don't think the show not matching your expectations is the show's fault. I think people just need to come at it with the right mindset. Meet the story where it's at.
People are always more complicated than an audience wants them to be.
