     wrapping up for winter break is always the best. areum has her classroom decorated with fairy lights and a faux tree with a beautiful star to represent the harvest goddess of yangwon on the top. areum can’t deny that she forced herself to adopt other traditions, like christmas themes, when she was in seoul and especially chicago and now that she’s back in yangwon, it’s been hard to get rid of all of them.

     if there’s one person she’s excited to see at the potluck, it’s cheonsa because there’s hope that he’ll bring his daughter with him. ara always warms areum’s heart and perhaps, she’s the only reason areum could even consider coming tonight otherwise her anxiety would outweigh her decision and she’d be home right now with a glass of wine, eating all the sugar cookies she made for tonight’s event.

     areum’s feeling very out of place at the community potluck. she promised her mom she’d go and try to socialize and get out of the house, which she knew she needed, but that was another struggle in of itself and maybe, she believes, she just should have stayed home. it would be another hour or so before she could slip out unnoticed. 

     on top of everything, there was a large rip in her prettiest red dress that she’d put there not just a minute ago and the panic starts to set in. at least her underwear was cute, she thinks grimly. “ haeil, ” she whispers, standing in an abandoned hallway away from the main crowd. “ haeil. ”

     areum is desperate when it comes to lessening her mother’s pain. after she’d come back from what she now calls her rebellious period, she’d gotten to see how much worse her mother’s condition had gotten. of course, her mother’s spirit never seemed to dampen but she knew that deep down, she was embarrassed and above all in pain. some of the harsh medications, her mother refused to take, not wanting to have some of the addiction that came with it. a lot of the pain, she chose to feel because of this.

     her parents are fast asleep in a far part of the house, leaving areum and soojung enough room to socialize around a warm fire in her father’s lounge / library where the floor is dug out in front of the fireplace and filled with comfy pillows and blankets. in her hand, sits a glass half full of wine and by her side, sits her friend soojung who’s decided they need a night to destress.

     the waitstaff fills up their mugs as the sun starts to set over yangwon’s fields and the cold weather begins to deliver frost to every surface of the small city. areum is thankful for the warmth of the diner and the chance to meet with a friend and fellow aspiring educator. there’s not many people who enjoy working with children enough to call it their career, so eunki is definitely someone she enjoys company from.

     areum’s happy to make a visit to seoul –– she prefers the quiet of yangwon over the hustling noises of seoul but this was her home for the majority of time she was in university. most of her current friends are still here, so trips to the city are still rather frequent ( or as frequent as she can manage ). today she’s accompanied by yein, showing her around the many spots that she liked to visit and also places she hasn’t really been yet too.

     areum can’t find time to herself anymore between her students and her parents. it’s not as though she doesn’t enjoy what she does, or doesn’t have love for her mother enough to want to take care of her. it’s just in between those moments, ones reserved for herself seem to go by so quickly that she can never catch her breath –– or finish her book. areum barely even knows she’s stressed, that is she wouldn’t really know what to do if she was aware of it.
