also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.
mmm. I remember when my son was three or four years old, and I suddenly realized, hey - he has had NO serious injuries! When I was that age I had had multiple major injuries, been to the er twice, tons of scars. My parents joked repeatedly that they'd have to send me to school, when I got old enough, as a "bag of pieces." And we all laughed - funny, right?
And it hit me like a BRICK that I was taking careful care of this little one every day so he didn't get hurt - but! my own memory was of being alone, unsupervised, a ridiculous amount of time. Outside on the farm and alone as a toddler, or literally being looked after by a farm dog.
Memory being fickle, I checked with one of my aunts who I was close to as a child. "Was I left alone, like, a LOT?" I asked her. Her friendly face got serious, and she just nodded. "You raised yourself," she told me, "Then you raised your brother."
That was the 70s. So, yeah. Hard agree, op.
i dont WANT pride months to be over,
on the other hand...
people are so fucking weird about uncontacted tribes/peoples oh my goddddd you are not making it out of the colonialist mindset
fun fact uncontacted peoples are not ignorant they are fully aware of the "outside world" and are CHOOSING not to have contact because they (rightly) feel it would add no value to their lives and place them in an exploited position. it's voluntary. they are isolated on purpose.
sentinelese people aren't like some ignorant noble savages, or actual savages who are all about warfare and killing (wildly racist take i see very often), they are literally regular ass fucking people who have seen the exploitation of their neighbors (other andamanese people) AND the massive disease outbreaks caused by contact, and decided they want no part in that. they are literally regular people choosing to survive. that's it.
Good resource to start learning about uncontacted peoples:
There are at least 196 uncontacted Indigenous groups living in forests across the globe. Right now, more than 95 percent of uncontacted peop
For those in the notes arguing about whether "uncontacted" is the correct term; whether or not it seems the most accurate, it's the term that is being used. "Uncontacted" just means they reject contact with non-Indigenous society, not that they are isolated from all other people or don't know it exists or have never spoken to a white person before. From the link above:
Uncontacted Indigenous peoples reject contact with outsiders, as an active and ongoing choice. Survival International has calculated that there are 196 uncontacted groups worldwide; some of these are entire peoples who are uncontacted – such as the Sentinelese in India. Some uncontacted groups – such as the Ayoreo Totobiegosode in the Paraguayan Chaco or the Amahuaca in Peru – are sub-groups of bigger tribes with whom they share a language and often a territory. All are aware of the outside world, and reject it. They are self-sufficient and resilient. They live independently in forests, sometimes on islands. They resist intrusion, and thrive when their rights are respected. Uncontacted peoples may encounter outsiders sporadically, or not at all. They are aware of neighboring Indigenous peoples, who may be closely or distantly related. The uncontacted Hongana Manyawa in Indonesia have family members who have left the forest, mostly under duress. The uncontacted Pirititi occasionally encounter their contacted Kinja neighbors in the Brazilian Amazon. The Massaco, also in Brazil, were for decades known only by traces in the forest, including booby traps sharpened with rodents' teeth and placed on their hunting trails to warn off outsiders. Uncontacted peoples’ rejection of contact is often rooted in memories of devastating past contact and invasion, which brought violence, epidemics and death. Their denial of contact is a clear expression of their autonomy and self-determination.
At that link you can also check out "Voices from the Edge" which is a collection of interviews mostly with Indigenous people who have been forcibly contacted and whose relatives are still uncontacted.
(Guy who has only read the manga of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and hasn't really watched Miyazaki's other movies) yeah I love the #ghibli aesthetic

Nikita Chan (Chinese/American), Keeper of the Secret Garden, 2026, Color pencil on paper
RATING: UNRELIABLE
source: ‘In general, brain damage refers to significant, undiscriminating trauma-induced damage.’
This is not the case in untreated depression, which has been found to correlate with decreased the average volume of certain brain structures, specifically the amygdala and hippocampus:
source: ‘meta-analyses indicated that amygdala volume was significantly decreased in depression in studies that included unmedicated depressed participants’
source: ‘Hippocampal volume is reduced in patients with unipolar depression, maybe as a consequence of repeated periods of major depressive disorder.’
However, it’s important to remember that differences in brain structure isn’t inherently ‘damage’, and doesn’t inherently mean loss of funtion. For example:
source: ‘investigators have found smaller amygdala volume in depression to be associated with increased responsivity to affective stimuli’
Furthermore, this process is reversible with medication.
source: ‘Our finding that amygdala volume is significantly increased in samples of medicated depressed participants is consistent with, and extends, a growing body of evidence that antidepressant treatment facilitates growth of new neurons and glia’

That comment is spot on AND sciatica stretches are legit. The best treatment for sciatica is get stretchy.
Signed: Willem Defoe fan with sciatica
For anyone who doesn’t know, Sciatica is pain due to compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your buttocks down the back of your leg. The reason this stretch is helpful is because the sciatic nerve, after leaving your spinal cord, immediately runs just underneath - and may get compressed by - the Piriformis muscle deep in your buttcheek, which helps you externally rotate your hip. (If the muscle is super tight, your toes on that side might actually point further out when you lie down compared to the toes on your other foot, jsyk).
If the above stretch ain’t compatible with you for reasons like having bitch ass knees, here are some alternative and amazing stretches for the muscle in order of easiest to hardest (but imo least to most helpful) to perform:
However, just keep in mind that none of these stretches will help you if you have a herniated disc, which compresses the nerve roots that protrude from the spine itself! For that you’ll for sure need some different medical intervention.
Have fun!
IF YOU DISLOCATE JOINTS EASILY PLEASE DON'T DO THE TOP ONE GANG you will dislocate your hip or knee, and be careful with the alternative one as hip dislocation is still possible with that
If you're hypermobile/inclined to dislocation, what you want to do instead is get a massage gun and massage 1) the front of your hip where your jeans pockets are and 2) the top & side of your butt cheek for two minutes at a time when it hurts. You can also go all the way down the outside of your thigh if it doesn't hurt too bad. This will help release the muscles that are pinching or stretching that nerve without risking dislocation.

not even joking this is one of the worst possible changes that i could've reasonably conceived of to happen to video games.
having thought about it this is a generationally anti-consumer announcement that will have a profoundly detrimental impact on consumers and retail markets. this will price out new consumers even more than a $600 PS5 and $80 games will. this will make games less accessible and more nickel-and-dimed. this will make games impossible to share irl without giving your console up, and will stop institutions like libraries from being able to loan copies of modern games. and most importantly, it will be for a minimal profit, as most of the sales in video games are already digital.
this is such a staggeringly catastrophic piece of news that i'm shocked it wasn't said by nintendo. congrats to sony for one-upping them in anti-consumer practices.
