hi all! i'm peach ( she / her | 29 | gmt ) + you're watching disney channel!
i'm very excited to get my girl kanzaki yui up and running. she's a teacher with spirit tethering abilities, pretty avoidant and aloof but dedicated to her craft and her teaching.
below the cut i have included a few potential plots but more than anything i just want to say i'm excited to brainstorm and come up with some exciting ideas !
of course, i'm seeking a familiar! i'd love an opposites attract vibe between the two, someone warm, clingy and affectionate - and someone who won't take offense to yui's standoffish nature. if anything, it excites them - they love the challenge. however, if there's a different dynamic you think would suit yui, let me know!!!
fellow witches who have similar powers ( those relating to the dead / spiritual realm ) - i'd like to explore an almost mentoring relationship between yui and them, yui teaching them ways to ensure there are healthy barriers and boundaries, but also for yui to see it's not always a terrible burden to have these types of powers
someone who knows of yui's family but never knew of her due to her extreme introversion. this is someone yui wants to avoid like the plague, but due to proximity has no choice but to acknowledge from time to time. they love to query her and make her feel uncomfortable, but yui keeps them at an arm's length.
one sided beef with another teacher who ruins her routine - whether it be sitting in 'her' seat, holding up the line to the coffee machine with incessant small talk - yui is convinced they are doing it on purpose.
someone who stumbles across the temple yui likes to take care of - can be a positive or negative experience between them, but yui feels very attached to the space and so having someone in such close proximity makes her feel somewhat vulnerable
more plots on my plot page + i am sure there is more to come !
yui-ntroduction:
you were fated to (ย TEACHย ) here, (ย KANZAKI YUI). the (ย SPIRIT REALMย ) willed that you would bear (ย SPIRIT TETHERINGย ) and arrive in time. i knew i would find you someday. whenever i came upon (ย EMPTY HALLWAYS AT NIGHT, THE FLICKERING OF FLUORESCENT LIGHTS & UNTOUCHED ROOMS BATHED IN SILVER MOONLIGHTย ), i thought of you. because of your (ย PATIENCEย &ย ATTENTIVENESSย ), and despite your (ย RELUCTANCYย &ย AVOIDANCEย ), i always knewโฆย we are bound, you and i.

she hadnโt thought this far ahead, hadnโt planned out exactly what to say, or how to broach the request without allowing that underlying wariness to show. she had not considered the phrasing, nor the most appropriate way to present it without unnecessary deviation.
she had not considered the rest of her plan. how very unlike her. this would disrupt the routine of a mental checklist she usually relied on. and without that, it would be more difficult to remain neutral.
yui preferred neutrality. it allowed her consistency in how she approached things, casting critical analysis in even the minute areas of her life. but even she had her limits. and jiho was her limit.
he bothered her, in a way that was difficult to ignore. the same way a fly might linger nearby, buzzing in your ear and returning the moment you think youโre free. he had taken her seat in the staffroom, held up lines with menial small talk, and generally placed himself in her way more often than not. at first, she had assumed it was coincidence. over time, the perceived repetition made that explanation less convincing.
in return, yui held no fondness for him, despite everyone else seemingly considering him a fine teacher and a capable colleague.
she did not dispute his intelligence, though. how could she, when he had so successfully wound her up without anyone else having the slightest clue? still, it was his knowledge of the past, his role as an archivist, that made him relevant to this situation. if anyone had encountered similar symbols, it would be him. and if he had not, he would at least be able to point her toward a source that might.
โdo you have some time? i would appreciate if you could look at this and see if you recognise the runic language.โ
her request is precise. there is no ambiguity in what she is asking. she avoids confirming that she needs anything from him, and most notably, she avoids the word help. not because she is too proud. yui is not a prideful person.
but the term itself does not fit cleanly into her way of thinking.
asking for help has historically not yielded the best outcomes for the witch. while she is aware that this is not necessarily a universal rule and logically speaking, asking for help is necessary, yui cannot help but to avoid the word. after all, independence continually proves to be the safest and most reliable choice. .
she stands there, almost statue-like, waiting for a response. for a moment, she considers whether to leave it at that, to simply hand over the material and allow him to review it without further explanation.
then she remembers.
โohโi have a photograph,โ she adds, reaching for her phone. she retrieves it from her pocket, unlocking the cracked screen and navigating to the blurry image without hesitation. โand i have copied the symbols out a few times as well, though i have not been able to find any correlation so far.โ
she lifts the phone slightly, holding it out for him to take or view, her posture unchanged, her expression steady as she waits for his response.
the classroom settles differently once the last student leaves.
she wouldnโt call it quiet, however. though it may lack the voices of the living, there is still plenty of input from the other side. but at least it is more contained, pressed into the corners of the room, subtle and controlled. they understand and respect yuiโs need for routine, and in turn, yui has already given them their allotted attention earlier in the day.
although it is not silent, it will do.
she appreciates that. it makes this part of her schedule far easier.
her blouse remains pristine, crisp even at this hour, though the sleeves are now rolled neatly to her forearms. her hair, secured back and away from her face, has not shifted from where it was set that morning. not a strand out of place.
her heels click softly against the flooring as she moves through the room. measured. even her steps were deliberate in nature.
she restores the classroom to a state that feels correct. wooden chairs are adjusted one by one, aligned precisely with the desks before them. each desk, in turn, is returned to its original position with small, exact corrections.
nothing excessive. nothing unnecessary.
the board is wiped clean in steady, even strokes. she pauses briefly at the lower right corner, where a faint mark refuses to fully disappear, then sets the cloth aside without attempting to correct it further.
it will be addressed in the morning.
she always allows herself one area of imperfection for the next day. it gives her something to begin with. something already waiting.
yui returns to her desk. papers are gathered into neat stacks, two piles distinguished only by the direction they face. she separates them, her neat scrawl evident upon the papers, as she taps the corners lightly against the surface until they sit flush.
a green pen is placed parallel to the edge. the red pen, exactly two inches to its left. her hands are still. they are still because her routine is almost complete. they are still because the corners are becoming less still. the crowd is thinning and the noise is picking up once again.
yui does not mind. she will be leaving soon, returning to her own space. tea, honey, something warm. meditation, then a meal, and then her walk, the intentions the same as always.
the ghost of a smile lingers upon her plush lips. had those beyond the veil not been so acquainted with yui, they may have mistaken this expression for one of joy. no, that was not the case. she was simply content - they knew it, and she knew it.
to yui, being content was far more desirable than happiness.
she began filing the papers into two separate folders, careful to keep each page uncreased, untouched beyond necessity.
and then, without anything happening, something shifts. her expression neutralises.
she senses something. it may have been subtle, but yui can feel it settling within the doorway. she does not turn. instead, she slides the final sheet into place and closes the folder.
โโฆif this cannot wait until tomorrow,โ she says, voice level, uninflected, โyou should reconsider the urgency.โ
a pause. the folder is placed into the top drawer. it closes with quiet precision.
โoffice hours ended twenty minutes ago.โ the statement is delivered without emphasis. there is no suggestion of annoyance or frustration in her voice, it is simply a reminder.
silence settles briefly between them.
yui straightens, posture unchanged, her attention still fixed ahead rather than behind.
โif it is a question,โ she continues, โyou may ask it now. briefly.โ
only then does her gaze shift, just slightly. not enough to fully acknowledge the presence at the door, but enough to account for it.
โotherwise, it can wait until tomorrow.โ ย
another pause, characteristically yui in nature. the words settle into the space between them, neither dismissive nor inviting.
โif it cannot, do speak up.โ
despite her adherence to routine, she does not resist the occasional disruption. it is accounted for, in its own way. adjusted, rather than indulged. she remains where she is, one hand resting lightly against the edge of the desk, her gaze still only half-shifted toward the doorway. there is no impatience in the stillness. no pressure applied to hasten what follows. her attention does not waver, but neither does it close.
โโย ย โ โ ห โย ย lost in translationย ย ฬ โย โน โง โ ( @runeink )
her jaw aches, set for too long. it creeps up slowly, a dull throb that settles behind her eyes, down the back of her neck where sheโs been bent over the same page for โฆ. well, even she doesnโt even know how long anymore.
itโs been long enough.
yui presses the palm of her hand into her eye, dragging it across until colour blooms in the dark. it doesnโt help much. the heaviness stays, clinging onto her and she knows the only cure is sleep. but any attempt to rest now would be futile. this puzzle would follow her there too.
the room is dim, and itโs only then she realises how much time has slipped past her. that in itself is strange. yui doesnโt lose track of time.
ย silvery moonlight slips through the gap in her curtains, the only source of light in her room. ย soft, pale โ the symbols sit half in shadow, no wonder her eyes feel leaden.
they look different like this. not different enough though.
the book rests heavy in her lap now, older than it has any right to be. the spine worn in a way that suggests itโs been opened and closed far more times than it should have survived. on the table, her phone, old and cracked, the screen holding an image she captured weeks ago at the temple; an inscribed tablet, uncovered beneath the rubble and wreckage.
yui stares, lines settling deep into her brow. she traces the lines with her finger, she traces the markings with her finger, chewing at her lower lip. the curves, the shapes, the way they repeat โ thereโs a pattern that sits just outside of recognition. something she feels she should understand.
sheโs copied them over and over, filled pages with her own attempts, hoping something might click. sheโs poured herself over countless rune books, ancient texts, anything that might offer even a starting point.
nothing.
this wasnโt meant to become all-consuming. but thatโs what curiosity does when it goes unanswered.
she shuts the book, sharper than she means to.
the sound lands heavy in the room, swallowed in the darkness rather than echoing. for a moment, she stays still, and then a thought returns.
it ย first came to her a fortnight ago, quiet and unwelcome. sheโd brushed it off easily at first, irritated at herself more than anything. asking for help had never sat well with her. it wasnโt how she worked. if something didnโt make sense, she stayed with it until it did.
until she did.
but this hasnโt moved. hasnโt budged. not even a little.
if anything, itโs gotten worse. the symbols follow her now, slipping into the edges of her thoughts when sheโs doing something else, settling in too easily. and worse, she remembers them perfectly.
if she doesnโt do this now, she already knows she wonโt sleep.
and so, she swallows her hesitation, gathering her pages, phone and nerves.
the hallway outside feels colder. perhaps itโs just her. maybe she shouldโve grabbed a cardigan, something to wrap around herself, but she doesnโt go back. she holds the papers tight to her chest and steps out, the quiet settling around her in that familiar way.
her footsteps stay light against the stone, more out of habit than anything else.
she doesnโt look back.
by the time she reaches his door, sheโs already made the decision. her hand hovers there anyway, just short of knocking, her balled fist tightening as if she might still turn around.
she could go back. try again. sit with it a little longer.
the thought of opening the book again makes her feel lightheaded.
thatโs new.
โโฆletโs just get it over with,โ she mutters to herself, like she still needs convincing.
