And it’s such a neurotypical thing to do.

Neurotypicals hold autistic people to higher standards than they hold each other, push us until our behavior others us and then stomp us and tell us we don’t belong when we wobble a quark’s width out of the constantly moving lines they draw around us.

Shaun advocated for himself and was repeatedly dismissed because of how he expressed himself. I can see calling security if Shaun was flipping the desk or throwing things, but all he did was yell and say he wouldn’t leave. He posed no physical threat, he was trying to get heard.

The same thing plays out even more for nonverbal autistic people who communicate via behavior. Caregivers cry that meltdowns and aggression come ‘from nowhere’ without ever considering they are the cause of that behavior. They won’t acknowledge they are being communicated to because that communication doesn’t meet their arbitrary standard of communication as they know it.

I repeat, Shaun has ear defenders!
