What you're looking at is a subtle artistic inside joke within the world of electrical and hardware engineering.

During the design process of PCB's, engineers have to map out the board's silkscreen (aka the nonconductive layer of apoxy ink, typically in white, black or yellow, that is used to indicate components, design, and test points). This is an essential part of circuit board building that is an integral part of the design process, serving as essentially a communicative manual to anyone servicing it, or something fun to find for teardowns. Think of it as a medical diagram to the board's meat and bones. It is layered on top of the solder mask which in turn protects the copper of the board from corrosion.

Many designers opt to put hidden messages, symbols or popculture references within the leftover/non-essential spaces as a fun way to connect them to their work. It's a piece of the artist within the art, and acts as a fun little real life easter egg to anyone brave enough to open up the tech housing it.

They don't serve any functional purpose to the board, but they sure are cool :)

So I’ve been doing a lot of research lately on slang words and phrases that Bucky and Steve might have said living in the 1920s-1940s era! And so far a lot of these so hilarious to me! But they’re completely normal for those two and I head-canon that they still say some of these today! So here are some of favorite phrases and slang from their time!

Above my pay grade - that is not my area of expertise so don’t ask me!

Ace - the best at something. Example: “I was an ace sniper in the Army”

Applesauce - “darn it!” “Ah applesauce!”

Carry a Torch - To have a crush on someone. Example: “Jane has been carrying the torch for Bill for at least a year.”

Bump Off - To murder. Example: “Ray bumped off the informant, just as the boss told him to.”

Cat’s Meow - Something splendid or stylish; The best or greatest. Example: “That dress is quite the cat’s meow! (That dress is a knock out!)”

Corny - lame, cheesy

Edgy - nervous, on edge, overly alert

Flap your lips - talking

Gay - fun-filled. Example: “we had a gay time!” 😏

Geezer - old person

Get lost! - go away!

Gorilla - bully

Hot Damn! - an expression of surprise

In cahoots with - agreed to work with

Kicks - fun. Example: “just for kicks!”

Booze - liquor

Darb - an excellent person or thing. Example: “I was quite the darb in school.” (Got all straight A’s in every class)

Dame - A Woman

Doll/dolly/muffin/kitten/broad - A term of endearment for a woman

Dollface - name for a woman when a man is pleading his case or apologizing

Knucklehead - an idiot

Lettuce/Pocket Lettuce - Money

Meatball - a sucker. Example: “what a meatball!”

Nada - nothing

S.O.L. - Shit out of luck

T.N.T. - “Today, not tomorrow”

T.S. - “Tough shit! Get over it!”

Match! - “naturally! of course!”

Off the hook - cleared of guilt, exonerated. “I guess I’m off the hook then.”

Old lady - slang for females. Typically mothers or wives

On the nose - exactly

Spiffy - to look your best

Dolled-up - a girl dressed up nicely

Thingamabob - “hand me that thingamabob over there!”

Two cents worth - opinion

Whats buzzin’ cousin? - “what’s up?” A term of greeting

What’s eating you? - “what’s wrong?”

What of it? - “what business of it is yours?”

Wolf - a man with romantic intentions

Wise-guy - smart alec, obnoxious person

Whistlin’ Dixie - wasting time

Sugar - term of endearment for a woman

Baby - term of endearment for a man or a woman

Baby-doll/baby-face - term of endearment for a woman

Beat - beyond tired

Bender - a drinking spree

Biz - business. Example: “it’s not really your biz.”

Blah - it was okay. So-so

Blow a fuse - bad temper

Blast - “darn it! Shoot!”

Balled up - confused, messed up

Baloney - “nonsense!”

Drugstore cowboy - A well-dressed man who loiters in public areas trying to pick up women. 


Ritzy - elegant

Dumb Dora - A stupid female

Giggle water - alcohol

Gin Mill - a place where they sell alcohol

Heebie-Jeebies - The creeps.

Horsefeathers - same use as applesauce (darn it!)

Kisser - mouth

Pushover - someone easily convinced or seduced.

Spread out! - “get out of my way! Give me some space! Stop crowding me!”

Sheba - a woman with sex appeal

Sheik - a man with sex appeal

Stuck on - same as carry a torch. “I’ve been stuck on the same girl for months”

Admiral of the Swiss Navy - Military slang. A self-important person. Example: “Oh don’t mind him, the Admiral of the Swiss Navy doesn’t have to follow the rules.“ (Very sarcastic)

Blind-flying - military slang for a blind date

Blow It Out Your Barracks Bag! - Military slang for “shut up! Go to Hell!

Brown-noser - military slang. kiss-ass

BTO. Big Time Operator - military slang. Same as Admiral of the Swiss Navy. Someone who thinks he’s important.

Bug Juice - military slang for insect repellent.

Cash in One’s Chips - military slang. To die. Example: “you won’t be cashing in your chips anytime soon!”

Cit - military slang for a civilian (from citizen)

Completely Cheesed - military slang for extremely bored

Cool as a Cucumber - Alert and aware; calm.

Dead Battery - An irritable or gloomy person; a pessimist.

Eagle Day - military slang for payday

Ear Beater - military slang. A person who doesn’t let you get a word in edgewise.

Wilco - Will comply. This radio code was used throughout the military services and taken up by civilians. “Roger — wilco,” means “Okay — I’ll do it.”

Abercrombie - a know-it-all

Brunos/goons/hatchetmen/torpedoes/trigger men - a hired gunman and other tough guys

Canary - a female vocalist

Cave - one’s house or apartment

Clip-joint - a nightclub or gambling joint where patrons come and get flimflammed

Cute as a bug’s ear - very cute

Twit - idiot
