“Right, I heard about that. I haven’t spoken to her.. but I’ve heard about her being here. It wasn’t—and what do you mean by that? Are you on the force too or something? Right, well, good then. He’s in with someone right now, is there something I can help you with? I’m not like a part of the case or anything, but I can always relay a message.”

“Yeah, well she technically works for the CIA, she helps out around here with the uh... more challenging cases, I guess. Oh, no, I went into medicine instead - I’m a paramedic. I work at both the hospital and the firehouse, which is also probably something worth mentioning as we might end up bumping into each other more often. No, no - it’s fine. I can wait, it’s kinda of a personal matter....”

“Talk’s cheap, Marshall. I could out shoot you with my eyes closed.”

“Yeah yeah, for someone who thinks talk is cheap, your sure do talk a lot of smack. But your bullets where your mouth is.”

“I was being rhetorical. Though wouldn’t you know more than others? I mean, your sister’s on the council and…” And he was a hunter himself, one of the species pulled from the lake. “I feel like it wasn’t always this way.”

“Brooke doesn’t share all the council’s business with me and even if she did, I don’t think they’re exactly sharing much with Brooke at this precise moment in time, all things given. -- What Red Creek have you been living in because the one I’ve known has always been this way.”

“You could let me eat something off of your plate?”

“Help yourself - I’m a sharer.”

“I won’t tell you no again. Get out of my office.”

“The man my sister loved was one of the bodies pulled from that lake, she’s the strongest person I know and right now she’s a fucking wreck, and there is nothing I can do to fix it, so I’m asking you, one brother to another - God forbid anything like this happen to your sisters - let me look at the file. No one has to know. No one ever will. You have my word.”

“Sure they did and believe me, I’ve got no love for the Fontaines but random attacks on hunters doesn’t seem like their style. I dunno, I guess you could be right, but it seems like there’s gotta be more to it than just some witch on hunter violence or vice versa.” 

“You’re a hunter Logan, and not just of the supernatural, you know as well as I do that most animals will attack if they feel trapped, if they’re backed into a corner. The witches of this town have been walking around with targets on their backs ever since the storm... it might not have been their style, but desperation changes people. Maybe you’re right - maybe I’m wrong - but I think this is more simple than it seems.”

“Fucked around with the wrong person.”

“You not going to be more specific?”

“Suddenly leave town?” Alistair echoed, letting out a laugh at the words. “I must’a been really bad in the picture tha’ was shown.”

“I wouldn’t take too much offense, it’s probably nothing to do with you.”

“My dad was pretty talented with lying as well. Didn’t bother to teach me though. Just spent a lot of time using them against me. Anyways if you aren’t going to tell me I’m a good nurse then you should probably just stop distracting me and turning me into a bad one.”

“I’m guessing your dad lied for all the wrong reason, I’m sorry. - Whoa, I’m not the one doing all the distracting, you’re the one that’s keeping me from getting out of here.”

“Yeah, but it hasn’t succeeded. Doesn’t have to be devil worship, could be all kinds of things. I’m sure there’s a fuckton of spells that call for different kindsa sacrifices. So what are you sayin’, that Byron and Gabe went after those witches and they all took each other out? That doesn’t add up. The hunters couldn’t have gotten their head shots off if their spines were fucked like they were and the witches couldn’t have mangled ‘em with bullets in their heads. Besides, of all the hunters in this town to go off half cocked, those two were pretty damn low on the list.”

“Those witches belong to a coven, the strongest coven for miles around. I’m not saying I know what happened, and I don’t think Gabe or Byron would have attacked those witches for no good reason, but you can’t deny what it looks like. Maybe they attacked first, maybe Gabe and Bryon we defending themselves, took down too before they were overpowered...”

“– I beat the shit out of someone, and I got shot twice in the process. Consider me on fucking edge.”

“What’d that asshole do to deserve that?”

I don’t know man - I’d probably offer my life up for theirs, even though I know they’d never let me, nor forgive me for it. But if I had no other choice but to choose... Brooke, maybe? We were separated from Logan for so long, I don’t really know him anymore, and Brooke’s always had my back and I’ve always had hers. I’m an asshole for choosing, I know...

“Yeah, but it’s still on the map so there’s never been total annihilation. Fucking around with the factions and pointing fingers is just gonna make this time bomb go off once and for all. I’m still banking on some kinda ritual or sacrifice. If two wolves and two ‘shifters show up dead together next, or any other combination, then it’ll be a pattern.” 

 “Doesn’t mean it hasn’t been trying. Really Logan? Ritual sacrifice. Of al the unholy things that exist in this world, the Devil ain’t one of them. He lives in all of us - if anything. And I ain’t the one pointing fingers - the council did that when they put a cap on magic around here. They made the witches targets and the witches were probably defending themselves, which in turn got two of ours killed too.”

 “Well what’s done is done, eh? Can’t do shit ‘bout it. So let’s go get a drink.”

“You sure you ain’t going to do the same to me later if I happen to say something you don’t like? I mean, I like my ladies on the dangerous side - but I’d like to have kids too one day.”

       “I don’t need a caregiver, Caleb..” Brooke remarked, eyeing he muffin through tired eyes. On any other day she would have leapt at the offer, but the sight of food only made her stomach turn. With a heavy sigh she forced a small smile, taking the cup and bag from him. “— I’ll eat it later, thanks.” She mused, instead turning her attention to the coffee as she took a long sip. “Have you heard anything?”

“I’m starting to think you do - When was the last time you ate?” He sighed as she took the coffee but not the muffin, but continued to hold it out none the same. “He wouldn’t want you to starve yourself.” It might have been a low blow to have brought Gabriel up so soon, but he needed her to take care of herself. “No. Nothing yet. No word from the Sherriff, or the Council - not even a whisper around town.”

“Yeah, you have no idea. Archers Point, then? Or wanna try one of the others?”

“Archers is fine by me. Wanna tell me what's got your panties in a knot whilst we walk, or you gonna need a beer first?”
