YouMedia STEM @ Chicago Public Library

Last week, teens created a circuit using a motion sensor and a LED by programming it with an Arduino. In this video, teens test the circuit by moving their hand in front of the motion sensor. 

This week at YOUmedia HWLC, Lee worked on fixing his watch; the digital time didn’t read anymore and he wanted to fix it. He never fixed a watch but by using simple tools and doing research on the model in YOUmedia, he was able to learn how his watch worked. 

As you can see in the photo to the left, she set up CSS ‪#‎id‬ selectors which simply is a styled format shortcut you apply to any element. CSS iDs are useful if you plan to use the style/format for multiple elements so you wouldn't have to write it for each element.

Jesse learned about the chemical reaction of electrolysis. In the jar, there are 2 dog tags; one designed and another blank. The greenish, brown color in the jar is from the metal shards from the designed tag coming off and into the water; so in other words its rust caused by the chemical reaction.  

Cameila learns styling effects, isolated styling affects, ordered and unordered lists, and styling IDs in HTML and CSS. 

This last Wednesday, Camelia learned text decoration, background color, and text color. This upcoming Tuesday, teens will be introduced to basic CSS syntax

This Wednesday and Thursday, teens will learn how to add color to text, background colors, and boxes.

Earlier this week, Swan laser cut and created a LED transparent tag using an acrylic and fluorescent tag, coin cell battery, two LEDs, and two paper clips. 

Yesterday during our Get Wrekt! Workshop, Assata finished fixing and resembling the #ps3 controller that was broken from last week.

Robert created a iron on design using Adobe Illustrator and Silhouette Studio. He used the vinyl cutter to cut the design and ironed it on the shirt with a clothe over it. The symbol or logo represents a video game team he follows. 

During our Tinker Studio workshop, Alex created an Ardunio display using a breadboard, potentiometer, and wires. 

Holly took apart a power supply and analyzed the different components in it. 

The Get Wrekt! workshop is back! The first activity of 2016, teens took apart and analyzed components of a Dell power supply, a broken Kindle Reader, and a soundboard. Teens also researched what these items were used for.

When you place electrodes into the salt water and apply electricity, chloride ions move towards the positive electrode and the sodium ions move toward the negative electrode. The reaction causes metal to be transferred from the positive side into the solution, etching away its surface. 

Turning a 2D paper into a 3D lamp light through repetition, symmetry, and biomimicry. The strength and form of the lamp is determined by internal symmetries and symmetrical glide reflection. A staff member from HWLC visited our Chinatown branch YOUmedia, where they made one paper lamp and as you can see, it really illuminates in a dark room.
