How the Gilmore Girls revival should have gone:
The revival is still broken down into the four seasons however instead of starting with winter, we start with:
Summer
Rory has returned home dejected and at a cross roads in her life. After some sprinkled success amongst big newspapers, she had settled down at a smaller New York newspaper as the editor. Unfortunately however, due to the technological boom in this era, the newspaper is forced to close as it can not match the success of online subscriptions. Unemployed and questioning her career path, she turns to her mother for guidance.
Lorelai and Luke are happily situated at the same old house in Stars Hallow and Luke’s Diner and The Dragonfly Inn are booming as good as ever. Rory relies on them to offer her a positive perspective in life however they both don’t know how to help her. They are set in their ways. Both of their businesses have been stable for many years now and they are settled in their relationship.
April visits when she is town from college and has a great relationship with both Luke and Lorelai. She is studying engineering with hopes of becoming an engineer for NASA. She calls Lorelai “L” which Rory teases her endlessly for however Lorelai likes it. She considers April a true member of the family and often gloats about how good of a father Luke is.
However, Lorelai does confide in Rory telling her that she is scared Luke is too comfortable. That they have nothing more to look forward to. She is scared he’s going to get bored. Rory tries to comfort her without success.
Rory surprises her grandmother Emily only to find that she too is at a cross roads. She is struggling to cope with the loss of Richard and seems to be lulled in a stage of denial and depression. In an effort to distract herself and help her grandmother move on, she agrees to help her pack up Richard’s office.
Fall
On a trip to the shops near Emily’s place, Rory runs into Dean and his daughter. They are both over the moon to see each other. They chat happily and fill each other in on each other’s lives. When Dean notices a hint of sorrow and confusion in Rory’s voice as she speaks about her career, he gives her advice telling her to go back to her roots. He encourages to take a trip down memory lane and force herself to remember why she get into the industry in the first place.
The town puts together a Halloween festival with pumpkin carving and a horrible attempt at a haunted house. There are booths filled with home made pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin pies, toffee apples and candy.
Rory, Luke and Lorelai wonder through the festival encountering different townsfolk including Kirk and Lulu who are married and expecting a child, Miss Patty, Taylor and Babette and Morey. Rory rambles about how much she loved Halloween when she was a child and all of the candy she wants to eat. Uncharacteristically however, Lorelai is craving the toffee apple.
Rory takes a visit to Chilton during a college seminar for the senior students. She walks through the hall staring at all the different colleges and degrees being displayed. She stops at Yale and smiles, reflecting.
As she is leaving she bumps into Jess, literally. They are both stunned to see each other and very dazed. Jess explains that he was going to visit Luke but had to drop in on his way. Rory explains that she was just taking a day to reflect. He tells her about how he is a publisher and writer and is working on a book to be released the year after. She is over the moon happy for him. When she questions why he had to be at Chilton though he explains that he is engaged to a junior professor at Harvard who was running the stall for the college seminar and he gave her a hand. Rory is stunned, congratulating him. He asks how she is, asking specifically about her career. She explains that she’s at a cross roads but has some ideas that she’s sorting through. She has a moment of overwhelming emotion to which he asks if she is okay. She explains that she’s happy for him which oddly surprised her. They laugh about that and he asks if they can meet up later, after he sees Luke. She agrees and leaves.
As she leaves, she receives a call from Lorelai telling her to get home as soon as she can. When Rory arrives home Lorelai and Luke are in the living room. Luke is sitting on the couch casually and Lorelai is jumping around like a child. She tells Rory that she is pregnant and receives large congratulations. Rory hugs Lorelai and hugs Luke too who by now is beaming with happiness. He stands up, strokes Lorelai’s tummy and kisses her.
Rory steps away from the home and sits on the steps outside. She pulls out her phone and makes a call to someone who is unidentified. She explains that she needs some help and whether they can meet up to talk about some potential business ideas. At the end of the conversation you hear her say “You haven’t called me that in years.” she then hangs up the phone as snow begins to sprinkle down from the sky. She laughs, looks back inside where you can see Luke and Lorelai through the window. She looks back down at her phone, shakes her head smiling at the sky/snow and runs back inside.
WINTER
Rory is sat in a restaurant speaking to someone however you can not see who. She explains her situation with the newspaper in New York and explains that she realised her journalism career doesn’t need to be over but just altered and how she decided she wanted to start a professional blog. She explains that she had run into Dean who told her to go back to her roots so she went to Chilton and it just happened to be college day and when she saw the Yale booth it all came to her. Finally, Logan is revealed. He smiles his cheeky smile and asks what he can do to help her. She explains that they would be business partners. She further explains that she has always kept a tab on him and knows that he buys small internet businesses, makes them big then sells them back taking some of the profit. She explains that he can help her with the technological side of everything so she can focus on the writing. He agrees to be business partners.
One day, Rory comes home to a quiet household. She finds Lorelai sitting at the kitchen table alone with a bag packed on the ground beside her. She explains that she miscarried the baby. She cries about how she let Luke down. He had plans years ago to have children, he even bought the Twickham house with the idea of having children and she took that away from him. She fears that she has no purpose anymore. She tells Rory that she’s going away for a while. Rory tries to comfort her and tells her that she can’t leave. She even uses Emily as an excuse saying that she needs to be there to help look after her. Lorelai doesn’t budge, she tells her that she’ll call and gets up to leave.
Lorelai drives down the road and as she’s driving she sees a sign for Hartford. She has a moment of hesitancy then puts her indicator on for the turn off. She arrives at Emily’s place and tells her mother to come with her to Ocean City. Emily refuses at first telling her that she doesn’t want to go on a beach holiday in winter, rambling about the stupidity until Lorelai blurts out that she lost the baby. Emily is stunned with empathy then tells her to wait while she packs her bags.
Luke is devastated about the loss of the baby and is concerned about Lorelai. Jess stays for a few days to offer a metaphorical shoulder to cry on. One afternoon he joins Rory at Emily’s place. They sit in what used to be Richard’s office however it is now empty besides his desk in the middle of the room. They’ve pulled dining room tables to sit on and are drinking. She explains to him her thoughts about the blog and working with Logan however she is struggling to work out exactly what to publish. He asks if it’s just business or romantic. She hesitates and he explains that it’s okay to talk to him about it. He tells her that they’re family. He then tells her that that’s what she should write about - family. He tells her that she is amazing at helping others because she has so much life experience. He encourages her to blog about her past, present and future life experiences and let people beyond her inner circle learn from her life. They decide she should name name the blog “Gilmore Girl: A Year in the Life”.
Emily and Lorelai bond while they’re away. Lorelai talks about the miscarriage and her concerns about Luke which causes Emily to finally break down. They cry together about the passing of Richard and Emily tells Lorelai not to let Luke go.
SPRING
Lorelai arrives home and Luke is thrilled. She apologises endlessly and keeps telling him she wants to talk to him. He wont let her and instead tells her to put her bags down because they need to go somewhere. He refuses to tell her where though.
He takes her to an unfamiliar location with a large carousel. Lorelai is gobsmacked. She slowly walks over to the carousel, admiring it. After she takes it in she turns around to Luke who she finds kneeling with a ring held out. He asks her to marry him because no matter what happens in their life, she is his family and as long as he has her nothing else matters. She says yes, and kisses him. He laughingly asks her to help him up and they embrace laughing. She stares at a church which is in front of the carousel. She asks Luke how he knew that this was “the” church and he explains that he called Sookie. Lorelai is overwhelmed. She asks him when they should get married. He says June 3rd. She repeats “June 3rd” just as the two did in the diner during season 6 of the original show.
Logan and Rory are in his apartment discussing layouts for the blog. Rory is getting restless because she’s overwhelmed and hungry. Logan laughs and they both realise how comfortable they are. He kisses her. She kisses him back and then pulls away, flustered. They get into a stupid fight about how they are business partners and shouldn’t be anything more. Rory makes a stab about how Logan is a bachelor and obviously comfortable with it, pointing to his bachelor pad type apartment. He fights back that he isn’t that type and she should know that, even bringing up his engagement that she rejected. He rants about how he isn’t a bad guy and that they could easily be both business partners and romantic. He tells her that they bring the best out of each other, calling her Ace. She tells him not to do that. When he asks why she interrupts him with a kiss. Rory then tells him that they just need something big to write about to kick start the blog. He tells her that he has an idea.
They exit the apartment building to Finn and Colin resting on a car parked in front. They joke about waiting for too long and open up the door for Rory. They go on an extravagant evening adventure very similar to the LDB adventure in the actual revival.
Luke and Lorelai get married at the church with the carousel that they were going to all those years ago. Rory is maid of honour and Jess is best man. Sookie even surprises Lorelai with a visit which overwhelms her to no end. Everyone from the town it at the wedding and when Luke and Lorelai have walked down the aisle after the ceremony as husband and wife he tells her that they were all there for her. That she has more of a lasting impact than she could ever imagine and that her purpose is being a friend to every person she meets. Lorelai responds by telling him she wants to adopt. He smiles, says okay nonchalantly and kisses her.
The day after Lorelai and Rory meet at the gazebo as they did in the revival. Rory boasts about how her blog has officially gone live with her first article. Lorelai jokes that she will read it 1000 times and even share it on Facebook. Lorelai tells Rory her plan to adopt with Luke, which Rory totally agrees with. After moments of silence Rory tells her mother she is pregnant, keeping true to the final four words. Instead of cutting to the credits immediately after, you see Logan walking up to the mother and daughter. Rory smiles at him and gives a little wave, Lorelai looks at her daughter and smiles.
