Happy 5th Birthday , Tokyo Ghoul ! Thank you for being the story that changed my life ! (and my weekends )
Listen to me, clotpole. I donāt care if you die. There are plenty of other princes. Youāre not the only pompous, supercilious, condescending, royal imbecile I could work for, the world is full of them. But Iām gonna give you one more chance.Ā

My favortie scene in that movie
Shit like this is why, when it comes down to big blue boy scouts, I will always take Cap over Superman. The vast majority of things this world can throw at Superman canāt even hurt him, let alone kill him. Itās a lot easier to be good when you never have to be afraid. But Steve Rogers is just the straight-up best human being around, and then he leveled up and started fighting supervillains ā all while knowing that bullets, knives, or a really unfortunate stumble can kill him.* *Even if said death just wonāt stick because COMICS.
This scene is amazing and Cap is amazing. Heās my favorite Marvel hero. But this commentaryā¦.misses the point on a cosmic level and I canāt believe it got reblogged this many times with no one catching it or correcting it.
I know itās popular to compare Captain America and Superman because people view them both as āboy scoutsā and they do share some similarities personality wise right down to them both being depicted as adult virgins saving themselves for love. But their messages are ::distinctly:: different which is why this commentary and comparison is way off.
Superman is a great hero BECAUSE he could physically rule the world but doesnāt abuse his power. Heās not just a good manā¦heās a commentary on the reality that men (especially powerful men) often abuse their power and oppress those weaker. Clark Kent is gentle and kind and does not view himself as āaboveā us nor does he abuse power. His heroism is about restraint in a world where men often donāt have it. His greatest fear is that he might not get there in time to save someone and that his power will not be enough. He struggles daily to reconcile hearing the world cry out for him and how much or how little he should intervene. He doesnāt want to play God but he also doesnāt want to let innocent people down. The idea that he could breaks his heart. āAll those things I can doā¦all those powersā¦.and I couldnāt even save him.ā
Superman ::can:: be hurt physically but hurting him physically is never the point. As Greg Rucka once famously wrote (in Lois Laneās voice) ā¦.if you want to hurt Supermanā¦you break his heart. His heart is the most vulnerable place you can strike. Thatās why his most famous villain is not a superpowered threat but insteadā¦.Lex Luthor. A corrupt, power hungry man willing to abuse and use the innocent to get ahead. Lex Luthor stands as a picture of what it looks like when powerful men abuse their power to oppress. Superman doesnāt WANT power which is why we are safe when he has it. Lex Luthor wants power. āI would have taken it and relished itā¦embraced it.ā
Supermanās narrative also has an underlying message of identity and āotheringā that Captain America doesnāt have. While Steve Rogers is distinctly American (right down to his name), Clark Kent is an immigrant. He has heritage from his homeland that heās always trying to reconcile with his upbringing as a child of Earth in Kansas. He often grows up feeling isolated, alone and afraid of his own body. His identity is a confusing thing for him just as it is for many immigrants.
Finally, heroism without the privilege of physical powers DOES play a massive role in the Superman story. It just does it in the form of LOIS LANE. And Martha and Jonathan Kent. And Jimmy. Lois Lane is just as brave as Clark Kent and is constantly willing to run INTO the fire even without the benefit of physical privilege. She was doing this before Superman ever shows up and she does it with no expectation that he will save her. She does it because itās the right thing to do and because she believes in truth and justice above all else. So the Superman story absolutely ::does:: revolve around the idea that humans are willing to risk their lives for others KNOWING they could die ā¦.but the person who represents this is a WOMAN. Lois is the one who jumps on the grenade in the Superman mythos. Not a man. And the story depends on her existence to survive and thrive.
Nobody understands Superman.
This. Nobody understand Supes.
Is that what you want to do? You wanna sit here and label me just another case of some crazy ass combat vet who lost his mind, huh? Maybe thatāll appeal to some shit-bag jury in some shit-bag court. It wasnāt on a battlefield ⦠Thatās not where my life went to shit.
they made it
