It looked truly wonderful. Coarse black barley shells wrapped around soft fried onions, with a little goat cheese oil. He hadn’t tasted anything like this in a very long time. Rodrik would never be so kind; their father was tacitly allowing it, the captain and the sailors were watching, and his pitiful pride was screaming—
He turned his head, looking blankly for anyone who might give him courage. His gaze drifted, only to meet Asha’s eyes without realizing it. His elder sister raised her eyebrows in mild surprise; her look held a trace of understanding, a thread of pity, and far more quiet thoughtfulness.
She always looked at him like that. She had watched him the first time he ran, watched him leaping from rock pillar to rock pillar, watched him practicing with sword and bow. She watched him hide in fear, watched him smile shyly. She watched the lost him, the helpless him, watched him. Without his knowing, Asha seemed to have already pierced him through with those sea-blue eyes—just as she was doing in this very moment.
