Chapter 10 Kinship Fieldwork Assignment 10/28

2. My family tree tells some untold stories because I don’t have names to several family members suchas as my paternal grandmother and my father’s siblings (brothers and sisters) because I have been out of contact with much of that side of my family. My family tree also shows the growth of my mom’s maternal side of the family. There are many females on my mother’s side of the family as well. There is also a pattern in my family to name younger family members after parents and grandparents.

I was watching Cartoon Network when I saw a commercial come on targeting boys. The commercial was provided by Mattel and was advertising Hot Wheels Tracks and toy cars. The kids that were acting in the commercial were also boys and they were playing with the toys the entire video. The commercial is set in a boys bedroom with boyish toys such as skateboards and play animals and there are no adults shown in the video. The narrator speaking about the toys is also a male but sounds older than a child. The colors that I also noticed in the commercial that stuck out were red, orange, and yellow. These colors are associated with action and activeness and I think that affects the type of people that watch t.v. Boys are also known to be active are and even running around with toys in the commercial.

The second commercial that I paid close attention to while watching CodeName: Kids Next Door was a commercial that seemed to be targeting girls. The commercial advertised Barbie dolls and the kids playing with these toys in the commercial were both girls. The toys and the clothes that the girls wore were light colors such as turquoise, pink, and white. The narrator that was marketing the toys was an older female who was speaking to potential “Barbie doll owners” in a way that wouldn’t seem to come across to boys as it would with girls.
