We hear from Bernard and Hanush in kcd1 how much Hans gets into brawls, and that his fight with Henry at the start of the game is certainly not a one off. Even before that when he challenges Henry to a contest in front of Bernard- Bernard says it happens often and that Hans doesn't take poorly to losing. As the game progresses, it may get lost amidst how much attention is paid to Hans' drinking and chasing after women, but I think his fighting is just another part of that, another quick way to sharpen his senses and feel something other than overwhelming loneliness.

We see throughout the games that Hans can fight well. He's trained to fight like a knight, but he can fight scrappy too- something certainly learned from experience. And that wasn't the nobility he was fighting there. Desiring combat and proving his prowess through strength and skill is certainly a product of the culture he lives in and the stories he's grown up hearing, but there are other aspects to his combative nature too. We see how quickly he drops his grievances (and this seems to catch Henry off guard too how reasonable he can be!) when he's spoken to and leveled with as a regular person.

Perhaps there is an element of it that is simply proximity to other people, the physicality of it all. He spars as part of his training, but he often takes it further to brawling, with a lot of goading. He chases after women for sex. He chases after men for violence. When he's so lonely, so empty, he's chasing after the most intense things he can feel to fill that emptiness- through touch, through pleasure, through pain. Especially interesting in the context of his sexuality, if brawling with a man was as close as he could get to expressing that physical attraction.

It's no surprise his relationship with Henry starts with fighting after all, it comes as a natural conclusion to Hans and he's already decided he didn't like Henry as soon as he met him- his opinion formed carries a level of intensity that must be answered with physicality. It also bookends the 'divorce era' in kcd2- when their relationship starts to fall apart at the start, the brawling cements that. And when we catch up with Hans at the wedding, he's lonely again, regressed to old habits- drinking, seducing a woman, and then he's quick to throw a punch (this time to Henry's benefit!).

Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
