Yi Lui was born in Beijing, China, to parents who owned an apothecary shop. The life they envisioned for their daughter was that of serving in the Palace as a potential lady-in-waiting to the Empress. It would bring her station and purpose. Yi longed for a life better than that of service; she hoped to be the one who had serving ladies, but knew such a route would be hard to acquire. Fate ultimately had a different vision for her. A Dr. Rowley and his son came into their shop, all the way from England, on a voyage for a medical book he was working on. Their fathers shared their knowledge with each other; Yi and the doctor’s son shared kisses. The two instantly fell in love, and Yi demanded her father allow her to travel back to England. She was 19, and finally, seeing this as a chance at a better life for her, allowed her to go back to England with the Rowley Family. A year later at the age of 20, they were wed, and they were very happy.Â
That happiness only grew when they welcomed their daughter, Katherine. Yi always doted on her. As did Mr. Rowley, wanting their daughter to be happy. And for the next 22 years, they were all so happy, not super wealthy but comfortable. More comfortable than the life in China would have offered her, of that she was sure. When she was 49 however, tragedy struck with the sudden passing of Mr. Rowley, and the fear that while comfortable while he was alive and working, there was not enough money saved up to keep that lifestyle. She feared having to become a lady's maid or other job, unless Katherine married into money. Using the last of the savings they had, she pushed Katherine into the season, and to her surprise, the diamond of the Rowley family turned out to be Yi herself.Â

There's more talk about property and customs but instead of waiting to hear more patiently, he abruptly gets up and makes quick movements out of the room, noticing someone followed. "If you're here to talk about antyhing related to Lords and seats be quick or speak of something else," he snaps but its clouded in an a croack of his voice, overwhelmed by everything around him.

Yi had been in this position before losing a husband, her daughter having lost a father. She knew Tobias had lost his mother before. She moved her hand to rest it on his shoulder.

Katherine was in a constant state of anxiety. Her skin was crawling and she felt the need to rip herself apart to free herself from the terrible feelings burdening her. For a while, she was floating from room to room, checking in on her family. When her first father died, Kitty had become very attatched to her mother. Never leaving her side, even climbing into bed with her and sleeping with her because the fear that she may die too was so great. Those same thoughts and fears tormented her once again, and she snapped at any of the well-meaning servants who suggested she go get some fresh air.
If she stepped away for a single moment and another person she loved died? Kitty was certain she would die right along with them.
However, she was finally coaxed away after a long day, a headache, and bloodshot eyes. She went out to one of her favorite places in the garden, her beloved koi pond. In her hand, her father's pipe. She would always sneak it out of his study when she wanted to go to the tavern, but smoking in the garden was the next best thing.
As she puffed away, staring at the fish who swam around so peacefully, muttering to them in Cantonese, she saw a shadow appear. Kitty coughed and dropped the pipe to hide it safely away and tried to blow the smoke away.
"What?" She snapped, looking over at the person now.
She knew that Katherine would be grieving and upset. Lady Yi, knew that she had every right to be. Losing one father was difficult, and now losing a second father, she could only imagine how her daughter felt now. Hearing that she was out by the koi pond, Lady Yi made her way out there, watching as she puffed away on the pipe of Cornelius. As if she had not been aware of her daughter's tendency to snatch it as her own. A small chuckle left her lips as she decided to approach, only for her daughter to snap back at her.
"Katherine, I had not quite expected you to be so cross with me." A hand moving to run her fingers through her daughter's hair, "If you wish to yell, or shout, or however you wish to let your feelings flow, you are safe to do so, my sweet, sweet girl." What was it but a mother's duty to help her children through their pain, to hold what they could not? She wanted Katherine to always feel secure with her mother.

Katherine sat upon a pretty pink pony on the carousel, giggling at something a young and flirtatious lord was saying to her. Something about how he was so strong he could carry two of her plus a real horse. Kitty didn't particularly care about his words, for he had also bragged about his large sum of money his father left him in his will when he died. That was the only reason to talk to any man, after all.
As the carousel came to a stop, Kitty accepted his hand as she climbed off and batted her eyelashes sweetly at the lord. "Thank you for riding with me, my Lord. I do hope to see you again soon." She cooed as he brought her back over to her mother. The man bowed and kissed her knuckles, and Kitty giggled once again, waggling her fingers at him in a farewell. When he was gone, Katherine let her face relax for a moment, almost agitated at how eager he seemed. "Did he seem interested, MaMi*?" She whispered now, looking at her mother. "He talked for so long I surely hope so."
Lady Yi was watching her daughter on the carousel, and the young lord she was with. He was boasting about himself, his strength, and his money. He was handsome, and she hoped that he was actually interested and not simply seeking to play the field. When they left the ride, she watched, smiling, and when Kitty approached she smiled.
"He did seem interested, what he was interested in though......that is still yet to be seen. I do not wish to deter you, my lily flower, but......men are not all as good as the ones I have been fortunate to be with." She smiled. "Him talking is a good sign but....we must get him to talk about things besides himself." She let a small hum leave her lips, he and Kitty would soon become annoyed with another if all they talked about themselves, a talent her daughter had as well.
