What's one of your funniest memories with one of or all the HCQ general?
it was never brought up again after, but not without Yingxing being teased relentlessly.
Corporate Blade and Yingxing!
Hi Lily :) anon who requested the Blade thirst Drabble AND LET ME SAY WHEW THAT WAS HOT š„µ I also loved your Dan Feng thirst drabble (two cocks omg) and I was wondering⦠could I send you a request for Dan Feng x reader x Yingxing thirst drabble please? Extra spicy š thank you!!
šššš ššššš ššš ššššš | dan feng & yingxing drabble
a/n: oh my! ą«®ź°āøāø> Ģ« <āøāøź±į iāve been getting sooo much threesum requests lately, makes me realized if u guys want to be split open that badly (canāt blame u all either :3) tysm for requesting, darling<3
dan feng x fem!reader x yingxing
warning: threesum :,> anal and vaginal sex (theyāre both just so excited! >:3) yingxingās teases :( dan feng more on smooth talk <3 reader is yingxingās lover ^^
the xianzhou has always known to be quite the tranquil place during evenings, when the dawn finally closes its eyes for the night sky to arrive and let its stars and bright moon shine, it wouldnāt be a surprise of why you found yourself fucking yourself mindless on YINGXINGāS aching cock as he lays down, watching you as he guides your hips on such a soothing and peaceful night.
however it was strange, these werenāt like the usual loving nights you and yingxing would often doā¦there was like an itch over your shoulder. like a new presence hiding in the rooms.
truthfully, you had no idea of why your lover was smirking up on you as you rode his dick, pushing yourself back and forth like a vulnerable individual before he toys with your breasts, pushing himself deeper into the serene comfort of the pillows as the scented candles fragrances the room. you knew how cocky he could be at some times, but you couldnāt shake this feeling looping over your head that he may as well be planning something.
he pumps himself further into your creamy walls, leaks of his release overflowing out from your drooling cunt while you still kept going, whining the blacksmithās name like it was the only word you knew in your mind while you jumped up and down on his chest. the pleasure aches in your stomach, tears flying out from your eyelids..voice filling in the night air of your bedroom. you couldnāt stop your hips from thrusting down on him. it was good, too good, your mind filled with incoherenceā¦
you shouldāve had trusted your instincts when you felt like an uninviting presence lurking in your roomā¦because before you could chase on your second release, a hand pushes you down on yingxingās chest out of nowhere.
your heartbeat palpitates hard on your chest, pants going faint as a familiar voice from the back echoes in the room.
āstay down, just like that..ā
was that
you tried to turn your head to see if it was really the voice of the high elder, however his palm immediately pushed you down, yingxingās hand gripping on your sweaty thighs.
ālook who decided to come. make haste now, my dearest here wishes her pleasure to be fulfilledā yingxing says, cupping your cheek lovingly. DAN FENG scoffs, his hands bring your hips up until he faces with your ass cheeks, cunt filled with the brim with his bosom friendās cum. slowly did he spreads them apart, and your eyes went wide in realization. oh aeonsā¦
you felt a tip slap at your other hole, and just by touch alone did you know he was big.
āw-waitā
āyou can take both of us, yes? come on, iām sure you can..ā yingxing cooed, his thumb brushing a small tear from your flushed eyelids. ābesides, itās not only two youāll be takingā¦ā
wait what?
before you could utter another word, the stretch on your pussy lengthens more, your eyes rolling back to the back of your head when you felt two tips enter both of your holes, a high pitched moan choking out from your throat as dan feng manages to push himself inside of you. he stays still for a moment while you squirm, one cock plunged in your asshole while your core was plunged with two. they havenāt even started to move, yet you were already so loud. yingxing chuckles, his hand now on your hip as he moves his head to look at dan feng.
āi told youā¦ā
āhmph, so she can take threeā¦ā you hear dan feng reply to him, however your mind was in a haze, trying to adjust to both of their sizes, your breath shaking from the aftershocks.
once they began to move, you were left with a babbling nonsense escaping your lips, feeling them hit the right spots everywhere in you. your tits bouncing while yingxing plays with your nipples, dan feng leaving bitemarks at the back of your neck as he fucks both your cunt and your asshole to the oblivion. your cries went louder, a tear falling down as the nasty wet sounds of skin to skin became more faster and harsher, sandwiched between the two members of the high cloud quintet.
āyouāre doing amazing, sweetheartā¦never knew you could take threeā¦ā
āpraising your lover in bedā¦hmā¦so thatās common?ā
āoh no need to be so formal, dan feng..ā
you couldnāt believe they were chatting so casually while the fucked your brain to pieces. their cocks werenāt in synch however unlike in their battles together, one was in while the other was out, bringing you a type of euphoric pleasure that was not like other in the luofu. yingxingās thrusts were fast, gentle, but they never fail to hit the deepest parts within you. same goes for the high elder with his merciless moves of his hips, who seemed to enjoy the same as his dear friend did, holding on your arms while your head pushes back, staring at the ceiling from ecstasy. you were fucked stupid, to the point you couldnāt think straight, brain mushed with nothing but a begging wreck of lust.
āo-oh fuck, oh fuckā¦you feel so goodā¦ā yingxing groans, tongue slithering the valley between your breasts before he sucks deep in your neck, leaving yet another mark on you.
āhahā¦so this is how human reproduction feels like..ā
ātoo bad for a vidyadhara,ā yingxing teases him, and dan feng groans.
a tight knot folds in your stomach as they moved faster, fucking you with full force like it was the way to bring an end to the denizens of abundance. your poor cervix was being kissed all over and over again by their huge tips, non stop repeats. your mewls went higher, feeling your high approach at the edge of your stomach. yingxing and dan feng werenāt going to last much eitherā¦
āc-crap i think iām gonnaā¦ā
āo-oh dear long..ā
yingxing holds on your hips, picking up the pace as dan feng follows by. this was fast, far too fastā¦they were going to fucking break you at this point. in each increase of their speed, your climax spills out of your abused womb, a moaning mess filling your bedroom. no matter what you could never follow up with their quick paces. dan feng held you tight in place, his hands would leave bruises on your skin.
yingxing releases first, pumping you full with his cum until you were a crying mess, his load spilling out of you and on dan fengās second cock, until it stains the sheets and onto the floor. fat plumps of his cum spilling all over. the vidyadharaās grip was strong on your arms, leaving fingermarks on them until he too came a lot, releasing on both of your holes with his huge load, stuffing you full straight to your entrance. their releases mixed altogether along with yours, filling your holes to the brim.
your tongue lolled out from your mouth before you passed out and fell on yingxingās chest. yingxing lets out a breathy laugh, pushing your sweaty strands of hair behind your ear before he kisses your forehead. dan feng finally pulls himself out of you, the mixture of his and yingxingās cum leaking out of your hole. he pushes his hair back, watching as the trail from the shaft of his dick fall down to the floor.
āthatā¦that wasnāt too badā¦is she going to be alright though?ā yingxing smiles at him, brushing your head as you slumbered on his chest.
āsee? we should do this often moreā¦what do you say?ā
Stress Relief || Dan Feng
TW: penetrative sex (gn), biting, cockwarming
Notes: Just a little dirty ditty written for a friend
In hindsight, your offer might have been a little misguided. Of course, that doesn't help you now as you're stuck with the consequences of your own actions.
Dan Feng had been more irritable than usual, snapping at anyone who happened by his office. One poor Pearlkeeper, who'd been nearly in tears, came to get you, hoping you'd be able to allay his frustration. Such was how you ended up here in his lap, in his office, and desperately pleading with any Aeon who would deign to listen. He must have sensed the fleeting sense of calm serenity as he sends it fleeing like he has every time since you walked into his office a couple of hours ago.
"Ah ah ah, don't drift away from me." He purrs, lips brushing the small patch of your bare shoulder available to him above your collar. "It's not like you to slack off, darling."
His tail wraps just a little tighter around your waist, forcing you closer still. His tease is a double-edged sword as the increased pressure has you making the most delicious of sounds and briefly clenching around him, only making his own focus drift from the actual task at hand. He grounds himself with a sharp bite to the soft meat at the juncture of your neck and shoulder, again sparking an equally distracting response from you.
"You little minx," he hisses, low and dangerous in your ear. "You're supposed to be helping, not distracting me."
The thought occurs to you that, in actuality, he's the one distracting himself. You go to say as much when he shifts slightly to turn a page, and the words evaporate like the morning mists as he grazes that one spot that makes stars alight behind your eyes.
"By Long..." The High Elder grits out, obviously just as effected as you. "I can't even turn a page without you trying to pull my attention."
"Not...not my fault." You manage, gripping his desk tightly enough that you half-expect to see nail marks embedded in the dark wood when you let go.
"Take responsibility for your actions, darling." He tuts as though he's not already tempted to forget about the documents in favor of fully indulging himself in the pleasure of your body as he has time and time again.
You're left to fume in his lap as he obviously decides against that particular course of action and continues his work instead. Of course, now he decides to exercise some modicum of self-control and delayed gratification, the proud bastard.
At least he seems to be in a better mood.

āRun For Your Husband
Authorās Note: Happy 300 Followers (lām so happy and i yapped to much here)šš«¶š«¶ āØ this my little thank you gift!!
Summary: Being an outworlder in a foreign nation requires hard work. Fortunately for you, a little twist of fate takes you back to the right path.
Oneshot
WordCount: 3080
Warningsā ļø: Reader is mentioned female, Reader ran-away from a arranged marriage, noble reader, reader lies about her identity, reader is a healer, Dan feng is low-key sick and twisted same goes for reader, Mentions of injuries, wound, past life a little lore of the high cloud quintet (spoilers from 1.2 -3) the trailblazer is stelle, timesskips!! Yandere dan feng at the end??
Heels clicking through the floor, working with the alchemy commission, was tiring, especially now being assigned as a healer. It was back and fort Marastrucken soldiers and injuries there.
Tending the wounds of the great jing yuan who has been recruited by the sword champion jing liu despite not knowing this people and being a ran away from your homeland it was good to know a few history there to not look like a clueless foreigner.
It was not your business to listen to the conversation of the imbibitor Lunae, and Jing Yuan You. was merely ministering to his wounds.
"Have you heard from your missing bride?" Jing Yuan queried the azure dragon, who was seated across the chair drinking tea.
"No, and I have no idea what she looks like" said the dragon in an uninteresting voice.
How was Dan Feng going to know you? When he asked the family what he could do to help, they declined and vowed to bring you to him once they found you.
"In that case, how did you manage to get tied into a marriage without knowing how your future wife looks like?" Jing Yuan puzzled about his friend's dilemma.
"She did not like portraits of herself and often hid away from the world that was the only report i received" said the high elder.
What a bomber, you believed a gorgeous man like the imbibitor Lunae should find another woman to marry.
However, you could only keep your reactions to yourself. His situation was similar to yours, and the minute your father announced your upcoming marriage, you took the chance and fled away.
Being someone's wife was never your interest; medicine was, and you're not going to give that up for a man who is probably an old man with five children around your age.
Snickering at the thought and making a disgusted expression, you failed to notice that Jing Yuan had reached your side and was asking for your opinion. "What about you, young lady? Do you care to say a few words about the situation?"
Gulping slightly, you wrapped up the last touch of his wound before responding, "I don't think it's worth it. The bride ran away; isn't it a hint not to take a chance?"
surprisingly, the two men could only hum in response as you excused yourself.
Strange that you thought the bride reminded you so much of yourself, not liking illustrations and staying to yourself. presuming many people feel that way.
āā
"Oh, imbibitor lunae, what could I do to help you today?" You questioned, taking your focus from the therapeutic herbs you were crushing.
"Jinwen informed me you have the medication I asked for a few days ago" the dragon said before gazing at the books on your table.
"Just a moment, I'll find them!!"Running at the medical storage inspecting the label, making sure to offer the medicine that was specifically asked for
Dan Feng wasn't a curious person, but you left your notebook open at the table with a research about medicine and hypothesis, he couldn't help but help and skim a few lines.
Hearing your footsteps, he closes the notebook and looks down into the corridor where you were walking as if nothing had happened.
āā
Dan Feng remained quiet, but Jing Liu was thinking a different kind of silence. "Is this about your bride, Imbibitor Lunae? It's no wonder why you're skills are imprecise today."
The azure dragon snapped out of his thoughts. In truth, he was seeing you about more than he should, in the garden, the tea house, even the seat of divine foresight, but he didn't have the the courage to approach you.
Dan Feng sighs, "It's complicated" perhaps he should let go of the bride situation and the little infatuation at the healer lady you.
Jing Liu doubts her long-time friend, but she lets it go because he will talk when he is ready.
You were persistent in working, even organized, and giving everyone around you the same energy they gave you.
You were something the high elder looked at into the way your eyes would brighten when seeing herbs planted on the sidewalks, picking some and making good use of it.
Maybe he should ask you for a tea chat every now and again.
āā
The scalegorge waterscape is gorgeous, and anyone would be honored to live here. The palace is well-designed, and the plant life are well-cared for.
āI hope i did not keep you waiting miss (name)ā
āNoo thank you for inviting me over your highness-ā
"Dan Feng is fine, I think weāre pass that" the dragon chuckles, sitting down and pouring tea into your cup first.
"Is there a reason you called for me? I hope I'm not in trouble."
Dan Feng smiles, his hands now resting on his lap, admiring your facial features. "A few weeks ago, I read into your notebook about medicines. I know it's not appropriate to read into someone else's work, but I'm interested in yours."
A tiny flush forming in your cheeks, trying to conceal it by drinking tea,not used to compliments.
āIt's okay, I did leave the notebook open. Thank you for the compliment.āĀ
āSuch knowledge of yours is quite advanced; it can even help people in medicine say, How did you get here in Xiaozhou? I hope I'm not overstepping.āĀ
"I ran away from home considering the pressure was too much" quick and easy you thought if spilling even a little could get you in trouble and you don't want that.
Not after you found a home on an odd planet.
āā
Weeks pass, and you find yourself becoming closer to the high elder, even inviting you to dinner with the quintet. They treated you like one of them.
Life was finally getting better, and you would never trade it for anything.
Not until Dan Feng proclaimed his love to you in the moonlight.
In truth, he was attractive and strong, but you were still running from your problem. Who knew how little freedom you had left, so you had to do what was best.
Reject his confession politely.
āI'm sorry, Dan Feng. You are perfect in every aspect, but I'm not looking for a relationship.āĀ
āI see apologise for wasting your time (name)ā
That was days ago, and a small part of you felt like an idiot. The alchemy commission was quiet without the quintet's presence, especially Dan Feng inviting you out for a short break.
Even the group had not passed by, reminding you that the only friends you made here at the luofu were the quintet and Jinwen.
That said, Jinwen had a life; she was like a coworker buddy, even though she was busy.
Was this it you thought, once again finding yourself alone. Was the running worthwhile if the cycle repeated itself?
No, you can't let the past bind you. You got here for a fresh start. You're smart and can work anywhere. Everything can begin again.Ā
Soon, you find yourself filling out a resignation letter that was approved the same day you handed over the paper. You didn't have anyone to say goodbye, so the walk back home was chilly.
Not sure what your next destination is, perhaps becoming a galactic ranger and traveling around the cosmos is precisely what you sought.
Besides, you're certain that the group was purposefully avoiding you for Dan Feng's sake. They knew him longer, so it would make sense.
āā
Your feet were aching, cursing yourself for investing in high heels, seeking a big crowd to distract your handmaid. Why was she here at the luofu? Did they manage to hunt you down?
Bumping into people and mumbling innumerable sorrys, you needed to leave, and you were convinced she was chasing you.
At the time you started praying to any aeons above to have lost her and wished you were just hallucinating due to lack of sleep and weariness, yet she yelled your name, which was enough to confirm that this was not a dream.
Bumping into a strong chest almost knocking you out ready to leave, but just as you looked up, there was Dan Feng.
Majestic as the day you rejected him.
"are you alright (Name)?ā With a tight hold on your wrist and little time to speak, you hauled him down the narrow passageway in the hopes of losing the person you were fleeing from.
āI think someone was chasing meā you panted trying to catch your breath Dan Feng is drawn by your flausturized appearance, and you seem to have a hold on his heart despite rejecting him.
Tucking in the loose hair that was in the way of your vision, he caresses your cheek while gazing deeply into your eyes and seeing the slight bags under them. You must have been working too hard on yourself.
"Come with me, and I'll help you hide" Dan Feng says, holding you close to him, frightened to let go. Perhaps it was exhaustion working in you, but you inwardly nodded in response.
He brought you to Scalegorge, and instead of taking the stairs, he carried you in his arms. It was exceedingly intimate, and it was the closest you had ever been to anyone.
It was beyond midnight, and there wasn't a single soul in sight. figured everyone was still at the festival celebrating. You felt tired, and his touch was delicate, holding you like fine china.
A rush of guilt comes into your head for rejecting Dan Feng, who is an embodiment of perfection.
You couldn't bring yourself to acknowledge you love him. How can you love him? You lied to him from the start, and your past will only bring bad luck to him.
"You should stay the night, you look tired" he says, feeling the vibrations in his torso. You replied in a high pitched tone, "Why?"
āWhat do you mean, why? I care for my friend.āĀ
The fact that he spoke with such elegance cracked a small portion of your heart, especially how he emphasized the term friend.
"I rejected you how can you be so calm hate me atleast for a little" going straight to the point as always
Dan Feng was silent, savoring how you fit perfectly in his arms.
Entering the palace with a few guards opening the door for him and hiding your face in the crook of his neck was embarrassing.
"Oh, sweetheart, you're okay!! Thank you so much, Dan Feng." Color drained from your face, all too familiar who that voice belongs to.
Dan Feng lets you go, helping you stand on your own barefoot on the cold tiles. On the other hand, holding your pair of heels, why was your mother here?
"My sweet girl, you got us worriedā your mother says, checking you for any injuries before embracing you.
She choked in her own tears while you saw your father standing in between you couldn't really read what look he gave but you knew it wasn't a pleasant one "you kept us worried why would you run like that" harsh as ever, it could compete with the cold season
You froze, letting your mother coddle you, standing like a statue for minutes, unable to grasp why they were here or why they were thanking Dan Feng.
"I'm sorry to ruin your reunion (mother's name), but my bride is quiet tired from today's event and deserves a rest" Dan Feng said sweetly, but it felt phony.
He dragged you gently inside the chamber, and you couldn't process anything because your entire body went numb and frozen. "My love?"
"What have you done?" Your voice cracks as he shuts the door behind him and approaches your form. "My darling, I did what was best for us."
A shiver raced down your spine as he pecked your forehead, one hand roaming around your waist, the other crawling at the back, making its way to your chin, tilting it facing him. "I gave you freedom and wanted to court you in my way, but what did you do, beloved?"
"You broke my heart for the second time" he looked weak for a while before snapping again, making you step back. "You have no idea how pained I was when I heard my lovely wife ran away"
āDan feng-ā
āShut it" he chuckles sadistically, "till you made a mistake and left your silly notebook on a table. Guess fate ran its course."
The man you once knew was long gone. Was it all a facade to put on a show? It makes you question how many people were involved in his small production.
"I never expected you to reject me like that, so I had to pull a few strings" he stated, placing his forehead against yours and tightly grasping your body. "Leaving your notebook with your name, all I had to do was a background check."
"Don't worry, wife, I'll take good care of you" drawing away and sheepishly grinned, your body and mind not expecting such a thing to happen, not even noticing a few tears were slipping down.
You couldn't do anything, you wept, and even if you ran now, it would be too late since he had too many connections and would hunt you at the end of the universe, which you knew all too well.
"Shh, don't cry. Being a galaxy ranger wouldn't fit you." That night, he comforted your cries and held you in his arms.
Mumbling pleasing phrases at your ears about how he'd keep you spoilt and secure if you just sat still and followed the rules.
āā
Dan heng wakes up feverish and dehydrated, even after decades, his past will always find a way to follow his present.
He sighed for the nth time, the same dream every night, and each night became clearer, was his ancestor's sin, and being banned from the luofu was not enough to keep him bound even now.
A gentle knock on his door jolts him out of his reverie: "Dan Heng, are you all right? I'm coming in!" A recognizable voice spoke from the other side.
Sliding the door open, you discover Dan Heng sitting up on the floor, referring to bed: "I heard some noises, March and Stelle, and I just returned from a quick journey; I have a lot of information to give at the data bank!!" You cheerfully said.
"Dan heng, is there something wrong?" Asking with concern when you didn't get a response.
Putting your hand into his forehead to check if Dan Heng had a fever, typically he would not allow you do this, but he seemed like he saw a demonic being.
"I'm fine, just a dream" he nervously glances away, smoothing out the crease in the duvet.
Dan Heng prefers everything to himself, but since you came and introduced yourself as a prior researcher from genius society that Himeko knew he couldn't pinpoint why he gets sluggish.
In fact, March teases him that when it comes to you, Dan Heng can't say no "Maybe it's a good idea you didn't come to this expedition, and your room is sealed, not just that you sleep on the floor."
Scolding the ravennette in front of you recently joining the nameless, the first person you became close with was Dan Heng, undoubtedly you cared for him after all, you two had the same interest the data bank.
Dan heng chuckles at your scolding, reminding him of an angry cat hissing, and then it hit him you looked familiar in this light, your farrowed brows with a slight tint of flush; he had never seen you up close and took his time appreciating your features.
You looked like the woman in his dreams.
āā
"What happened? You guys looked like you saw a criminal" you asked, moving around the room looking for a hint of their faces. "We did see a criminal" march murmurs.
You look at himeko expecting she would answer the issues tormenting the mind "stellaron hunter kafka has showed up" himeko responded her guard was still up and you can hear the hesitancy in her voice a hologram of kafka and blade shows up.
"The xianzhou luofu is in a stellaron crisis and appears to be a few warp jumps away" she says with increased confidence.
You saw Dan Heng studying the hologram of blade. "Maybe it's best if you stay with me, Dan Heng Welt, and the others can take this mission" the navigator said, avoiding any sensitive areas for Dan Heng.
Dan Heng nods, leaving the hologram he was eyeing. "I think that would be great, himeko."
āWell i get to see Wel- Mr Yang in actionā stelle let out hoping to brighten the atmosphere followed by march āMr Yang better show us some skills!ā
ā(Name) what about you willing to accompany them?ā Himeko asks
"Of course we can split into two if something ever happens; after all, two is better than one" you let out, matching the intensity of March.
When you see Dan Heng walking away, you quickly excuse yourself and apologize to the group. You seek him. "Dan Heng, are you okay?"
Dan heng hums in replies following him through the data bank, you knew he had a past but were hesitant to ask questions for it was probably painful to him, so you didn't bother.
āBe careful out there (name) things can get complicatedā
āAwh dan heng worries about mee~ā you teased
Of course, he cares for you in some way. You have a grasp on his space that he wouldn't mind if you broke. He has never truly liked the company of anyone else, but he feels weightless with you.
He watched as you joined stelle and march get ready, leaving him at the data bank. There are still more questions in his mind than answers.
he came in a conclusion when you guys left. Were you the wife of his ancestor who keeps seeking him through dreams?
You can't really blame him if he went out of the train and stepped on a luofu after losing communication with the crew.
Can I request please Modern & Collage Au Mydeimos that have been dating with reader & he is down bad. Only when after graduation, reader told him that it's all a bet.
Playing the Long Game
Modern AU | Yandere!Mydei x Reader
The gymnasium smelled of sweat. The bleachers were packed, students waving handmade banners and chanting in rhythm.
You lifted your camera and zoomed in on the court.
Through the viewfinder, you watched Phainon - captain, the one whose face graced half the campus promotional material. He passed to the player on his left, who drove toward the basket, and the entire gym held its breath.
Swish.
The crowd erupted.
The photo captured the exact moment the ball sailed through the net, the shooter's arm still extended, the expression of pure focus frozen in time. Behind him, you could see the opposing team's shoulders slump, their coach shouting something lost in the noise.
You lowered the camera and exhaled. That was probably the shot the school paper would want for the front page. The photographer on duty, Ayato, had asked you to cover this match because his grandmother was in the hospital. You'd said yes without hesitation, you owed him for covering your shift last month when you'd come down with a fever.
You'd done enough event coverage: festivals, guest lectures, the occasional club fair, that your face was familiar to both students and teachers.
"Nice shot, Y/N." A voice appeared at your elbow, and you didn't need to turn to know it was Himari, your best friend.
"Thanks." you said, keeping your eyes on the court as the opposing team called a timeout.
"Uh-huh." Himari leaned against the railing, her gaze fixed on you with an expression you'd learned to recognize, the one that meant she was plotting something. "You know, I've been watching you watch them."
"I'm taking photos. It's literally my job right now."
"I'm not talking about the game." She grinned and gestured broadly toward the court, where the players were returning to position, and one figure in particular stood a head taller than the rest. "Fyi, that's Mydei." She paused, searching for the right word. "You looked at him through your lens like he was a tree. A very tall, very attractive tree."
"He's a player." you said flatly. "I'm a photographer. He's the subject. That's the extent of it."
"Exactly." She clapped her hands together. "That's the problem."
You sighed. "Is there a point to this, Himari? Because the game's about to restart, and I need to be ready."
The timeout ended. The teams returned to the court, tension coiling in the air like a spring about to snap.
Mydei got the ball. He faked left, spun right, and rose for the shot.
The gym went silent.
Swish.
The crowd exploded into chaos. Students leapt to their feet, banners waving, voices merging into an indistinguishable roar of triumph.
"Great.." Himari murmured. She wasn't looking at the court. She was looking at you. "You know, Y/N, I've been thinking. We've been friends for... what, three years? And in all that time, I've never seen you crush on anyone. You're nice, people like you. But you've never dated. You've never even expressed interest."
"Not interested." you said.
"That's the problem!" She jabbed a finger at your chest. "Everyone needs someone, Y/N. Even if it's just a little excitement. A little adventure. Something to break the monotony of taking photos of people you don't even look at twice."
You were about to respond when a sudden hush fell over the gymnasium. The opposing team was huddled together. The coach was talking rapidly, but his players were shaking their heads. It was over. Everyone could feel it.
And Himari's eyes lit up with a terrible glint.
"Let's make a bet."
"What?"
"Here's the deal." She crossed her arms, the picture of confidence. "After the game, you go down there. You find Mydei and you confess to him. Tell him you want to date him."
You stared at her. "You're insane."
"Maybe. But listen to the rest." She leaned in. "If you can make the relationship last until graduation, I'll give you anything you want. Anything within reason, obviously. But I'll make it happen. That trip to the mountains you've been wanting to take? Done. That camera lens you've been eyeing? Yours. Whatever it is, I'll make sure you get it."
"You're betting that I can't date someone."
"I'm betting that youĀ won't. Because you're comfortable. You're safe. And the thought of putting yourself out there terrifies you." She tilted her head. "Am I wrong?"
The buzzer sounded.
The game was over.
Students poured onto the court, swarming the players. The Kremnos team was a sea of ecstatic faces, jerseys being pulled off, teammates hugging, the coach getting drenched with a water cooler. It was beautiful chaos, the kind of moment that made your photographer's heart sing.
And there, slightly apart from the center of the chaos, was Mydei. He was smiling and clapping his teammates on the back.
Himari was watching you. "Well?"
You looked at her. Then you looked at your camera. Then you looked back at the court, where the team was gathering for a group photo.
"I need to go down anyway." you said, "Ayato asked me to get a group shot for the paper. And the after-game interviews."
"Of course you do." Himari's grin was infuriatingly knowing. "And while you're down there..."
"I'm not agreeing to anything."
"You didn't say no."
You didn't answer. Instead, you lifted your camera and began making your way down the bleachers, weaving through celebrating students and parents, your heart beating a little faster than it had any right to.
Getting the group shot was easy. The team was still riding the high of victory, and they lined up with minimal complaint. Phainon stood in the center, predictably, his arm around the coach.
Mydei stood on the left end, his arms crossed, his expression more reserved. But when you lowered your camera after taking the shot, his eyes met yours for a brief moment, and you saw something flicker there. Curiosity, maybe.
The gym was slowly emptying, students trickling toward the exits.
You kept your camera raised, hiding behind the lens, watching.
The team dispersed. Some headed for the locker room. Others stayed to talk to friends or family who'd come down from the bleachers. Phainon was surrounded by admirers, as usual.
And Mydei was alone.
He was at the bench, one of the long ones that lined the court, shoving his gear into a duffel bag. His jersey was off, draped over his shoulder, leaving him in a sleeveless shirt that revealed the defined muscles of his arms and chest. His hair was damp with sweat, sticking to his forehead in a way that should have looked messy but somehow didn't.
He was packing up methodically. Like he had nowhere else to be.
You lowered your camera.
Your feet moved before your brain could stop them.
You walked across the court, past the lingering clusters of students, past the cheerleaders taking photos with the mascot, past everything. Your heart was hammering, but your face was calm.
Mydei looked up as you approached. He was already half-turned toward you, his duffel bag zipped and slung over one shoulder. For a moment, he just looked at you.
"Hey."
"Hey." His tone was neutral. He was probably used to people approaching him after games.
But then his gaze flicked past you, toward where Phainon was still surrounded by people, and something in his expression shifted. A resigned sort of understanding, like he thought he knew exactly what was coming.
"Let me guess," he said, "You want me to pass a message to Phainon? Or maybe you want a photo with him, and I can take it for you?"
"I.. no." you said.
His eyebrows rose slightly.
"No." you repeated, firmer this time. You took a breath. This was insane. This was the most insane thing you'd ever done.
But you were already here.
"I came down here to talk to you."
His suspicion didn't lessen. "About what?"
"About-" You paused. The words were right there. You'd rehearsed them in your head a hundred times on the walk over. But now, looking at him, they felt different.
You swallowed. "I've been taking photos of the team all season. And I've watched you play. Not just today. And I think you're incredible."
"I'm not here to ask you to pass a message to Phainon," you continued, "I'm here to ask you if you'd maybe want to go out with me sometime."
The gym was still buzzing around you, but in the small bubble you occupied, there was nothing but the sound of your own heartbeat.
Mydei stared at you.
"You're serious." he said. It wasn't a question.
"Dead serious."
He looked at you like he was trying to determine if this was some elaborate prank, if someone was about to jump out with a camera and shout "gotcha."
But no one did.
And slowly, the suspicion in his eyes began to fade.
"That's not what I was expecting."
"I figured."
"You came all the way down here. Walked right past that guy." He shook his head, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "You really meant me."
"I really meant you."
There was a beat of silence. Then he reached into his duffel bag and pulled out his phone, extending it toward you.
"Then you should probably put your number in here." he said. "Since you're asking me out and all."
You stared at the phone for half a second before taking it, your fingers brushing his. You typed in your number, added your name, and handed it back.
"I'll text you."
"Okay," you said.
And then he was gone.
You stood there for a long moment, the noise of the gym washing over you.
Then, from the bleachers, you heard a high-pitched squeal.
You looked up. Himari was waving frantically, her face alight with triumph.
You shook your head, but you couldn't stop the smile that spread across your face.
This was insane.
----
The week that followed your confession passed in a blur of text.
You didn't see him face to face.
Your classes were on opposite ends of campus. The timing never aligned. You'd be walking to your afternoon lecture just as he was heading to practice. He'd be grabbing lunch during your only free period. It was as if the universe was testing you, seeing if this thing between you could survive on words alone.
It could.
The first night, after he'd texted you, the conversation had started tentatively.
Mydei:Ā So. What's your major?
You:Ā Secret, lol :)). And you?
Mydei:Ā Sports science. Shocking, I know.
You: I never would have guessed (¬_¬).
You'd smiled at your phone, curled up in your bed. The blue light had illuminated your face as you typed back.
By the third day, the tentative politeness had melted away.
You discovered that he was a morning person, he discovered that you were absolutely not, your ideal wake-up time being somewhere around "whenever the sun decides to be reasonable."
Mydei:Ā 5am is reasonable.
You:Ā 5am is an abomination.
Mydei:Ā You're an abomination.
You:Ā Rude.
He sent a photo of his coffee. You sent a photo of your own, a caramel monstrosity with whipped cream and drizzle.
Mydei: That's dessert.
You:Ā And? Your point?
Mydei:Ā No point.
You learned that he'd started playing basketball because his father had pushed him into it, but had fallen in love with the game somewhere along the way. You learned that he hated horror movies but would never admit it out loud.
"I just don't see the point." he'd typed, defensively. "Why would I pay money to be scared?"
You learned that he was funny. Dry, sarcastic, with a wit that caught you off guard and made you laugh out loud in the middle of the library, earning you a harsh shush from the librarian.
He learned that you took photos of everything, not just for work, but because you saw beauty in the mundane. The way light fell across a staircase. The pattern of raindrops on a window. The tired, content expression on a barista's face at the end of their shift.
He learned that you were a little bit shy, but warm once you opened up. That you had a dry sense of humor that matched his own.
By the fifth day, you felt like you'd known him for years.
And that terrified you.
You planned to meet him at a cafƩ near campus, a small place tucked between a bookstore and a secondhand shop.
You:Ā Almost there. Sorry!
Mydei:Ā No rush. I saved you a seat.
You pushed open the door, the little bell above it chiming, and scanned the room.
You found him immediately.
He was at a table near the window, his head bowed over his phone, the afternoon light spilling across his features. He hadn't seen you yet. He was wearing a white button-up shirt, the sleeves rolled to his elbows, paired with a sleeveless V-neck knit sweater vest. It was a distinctly preppy look, but on him, it was different. The fabric was fitted enough to hint at the broadness of his shoulders, the lean strength of his build.
His hair was slightly damp, like he'd just showered. A few strands fell across his forehead, and he pushed them back absently as he scrolled through his phone.
You lifted your phone and snapped a picture of him, the light catching the sharp line of his jaw, the soft curve of his mouth. The way his fingers curled around his phone.
You sent it to him.
His phone buzzed. He looked down at it, and you watched his expression shift from confusion, then recognition, then a slow, spreading smile.
He looked up, then he stood immediately, pulling out the chair across from him. "You're indeed late."
"Bus," you said, sliding into the seat. "Sorry."
"Don't be." He gestured to the table, where a drink was already waiting for you. "I ordered for you. I hope that's okay."
You looked at the cup. It was a caramel latte with whipped cream and a drizzle of syrup. A tiny heart drawn in the foam.
You looked up at him, something warm spreading through your chest. "You remembered."
"Of course I remembered." He sat back down, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I pay attention."
You wrapped your hands around the cup, the warmth seeping into your palms.
"So. How was your week?"
"Busy," you admitted. "I had three shoots for the school paper, and Ayato keeps asking me to cover more events."
"Ayato?"
"The one I was covering for last week." You took a sip of your latte. It was perfect. "He's grateful, but also he's got a habit of pushing his work onto me whenever he can."
"You should tell him no."
"I should," you agreed. "But I'm not very good at that."
Mydei studied you for a moment. "I'm noticing that about you. You're too nice."
"Or maybe you just bring it out in me."
His lips twitched. "Smooth."
You laughed, and the tension you hadn't realized you'd been holding melted away. The conversation flowed like it had been doing all week, jumping from topic to topic with the ease of old friends.
"I saw there's a new movie showing," he said, after you'd finished your drinks and moved on to a second. "I know I said I hate horror, but-" He shrugged, a hint of vulnerability in the gesture. "I thought maybe we could watch it together. If you're interested."
"You want to watch a horror movie? Even though you hate them?"
"I want to watch one with you." He said it simply, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "So I'm willing to make an exception."
"That'sā" You paused, searching for the right words. "That's really sweet."
"I'm not sweet," he said, almost immediately. "I'm cool and mysterious."
"You literally just admitted to being scared of horror movies."
"I admitted toĀ dislikingĀ them. There's a difference."
"Sure there is."
The movie will be on next weekend. You spent the rest of the day checking your phone every few minutes even though there was nothing new to see. Himari caught you at it and smirked.
"Look at you," she said, flopping onto your bed. "All lovesick."
"I'm not lovesick," you said, shoving your phone under your pillow. "I'm just... curious."
"Curious about what? Whether he'll hold your hand? Whether he'll kiss you?" She wiggled her eyebrows. "Whether he's a good kisser?"
"Himari!"
"What? It's a valid question!"
You threw a pillow at her. She caught it and laughed.
But later that night, lying in the dark, you couldn't stop thinking about her words. About the bet. About the fact that this was supposed to be a game, and yet-
And yet you actually liked him. Not in the way you'd expected.
This was exactly the kind of thing you'd tried to avoid your whole life. The kind of thing that could get messy.
But you weren't doing anything wrong, you reminded yourself. You'd confessed honestly. And if you eventually had to explain the bet- which you absolutely would, someday, when you were ready- you'd explain it.
That was the plan.
You just had to stick to it.
---
Monday came, and with it, a new rhythm.
You'd barely sat down in your morning class when your phone buzzed.
Mydei:Ā Look up.
You looked up, confused. There was nothing at the front of the room, just the professor preparing the slides. You scanned the window, and there he was.
He was standing outside the classroom, his practice bag slung over one shoulder, a carton of milk in his hand. He lifted it in a small wave when he caught your eye, then mouthed something you couldn't quite read.
You stepped out of the classroom, and he pressed the milk carton into your hands.
"You need to drink more calcium," he said, completely serious. "You're a photographer. You need to be healthy."
"Is that your excuse?"
"It's a valid one." He smiled. "I'll see you at practice?"
"Same time?"
"Same time."
He was gone before you could say anything else.
You stared at the milk carton in your hands.
This was ridiculous. This was the most ridiculous thing anyone had ever done for you.
You couldn't stop smiling for the rest of the day.
His practice sessions became part of your routine.
You'd finish your last class, grab your camera, and head to the gym. He'd be there, running drills with the team, and you'd find a seat in the bleachers and take photos. Not for the paper, just for yourself.
You caught him laughing at something Phainon said. You caught him glancing up at you, a soft smile on his face, before he turned back to the court.
You kept those photos on your phone.
You didn't know he had one too.
The first time you noticed, it was a Wednesday. You were helping him pack up his bag after practice, and his phone was on the bench. You glimpsed the screen as it lit up.
It was you.
You'd been looking away, mid-laugh. It was a candid shot.
"You take photos of me?"
There was a moment of hesitation in his eyes before he shrugged, the motion deliberately casual.
"Only when you're not looking."
You blinked. "That's..."
"Creepy?"
"Endearing."
He stared at you. "You think it's endearing?"
"I think it's cute that you're a secret photographer." You picked up his phone, scrolling through his gallery. There were dozens of photos of you. In the library, your nose buried in a book. At the cafƩ, laughing at something he'd said. On the bleachers, your camera raised to your eye.
"These are good," you said, genuinely impressed. "You have a good eye."
"I have a good subject." he said, and your cheeks flushed.
"You should post these," you said, handing the phone back. "On your story or something."
"No." He shook his head immediately.
"Why not?"
He looked at you for a long moment, something unreadable in his eyes. "Because I want to keep you to myself." he said. "The photos. The memories. They're mine."
"You're.." you started, but the words wouldn't come.
"I know." He smiled "I'm not great with sharing."
"You're an only child, aren't you?"
"Shut up."
You laughed, and he laughed too, and the moment was easy and warm and perfect.
But even as you laughed, a small voice whispered in the back of your mind.
You haven't told him about the bet.
You will. Eventually.
You just needed to figure out how.
----
Sunday arrived grey and cool, the kind of day that made you want to bundle up in layers and hold a warm drink between your palms. You'd spent the morning nervously picking out an outfit, changing three times before finally settling on something comfortable but presentable.
Mydei had texted you that morning.
Mydei:Ā Wear something warm. I'm picking you up.
You:Ā Picking me up? Where's the movie?
Mydei:Ā It's a surprise. Just be ready at 6.
At exactly 6, your phone buzzed.
Mydei:Ā I'm outside.
You headed out.
He was leaning against a sleek black motorcycle, helmet tucked under his arm.
He looked like he'd stepped out of a magazine.
Black leather jacket, worn and fitted, zipped just enough to hint at the white shirt beneath. His hair was slightly windswept, and when he saw you, a slow smile spread across his face.
"You look nice."
"You look like you're about to star in a bad boy drama."
His smile widened. "Is that a good thing?"
"Debatable."
He laughed and handed you a helmet. "Ready?"
You took it, your fingers brushing his. "Ready."
The ride was exhilarating, wind whipping past you, the city lights blurring into streaks of gold and red. You wrapped your arms around his waist, feeling the solid warmth of him through his jacket, and he leaned back slightly, just enough to press closer to you.
The movie theater was small, the kind of place that showed films no one else was showing. The thriller he'd mentioned was playing in one of the smaller screens, and you settled into your seats with a shared bucket of popcorn.
The marketing had been excellent.
The movie was not.
Thirty minutes in, you leaned over to him, your voice a whisper. "Is it just me, or is this actually terrible?"
He turned to look at you, "It's terrible."
"Oh thank god."
"I thought you liked horrors?"
"I likeĀ goodĀ horrors. This..." You gestured at the screen, where the protagonist was making yet another inexplicably stupid decision. "This is a tragedy."
"Should we leave?"
"No." You shook your head firmly. "I need to see how it ends. It's a train wreck. I can't look away."
He laughed and leaned closer. "Then tell me what's going to happen next."
So you did.
Every time a character made a poor choice, you leaned over to whisper your commentary. "He's going to go into that basement alone, isn't he? Of course he is. Why would anyone make a smart decision?" Or, "She's definitely the killer. I called it five minutes ago. Watch.."
You were so caught up in your predictions that you didn't notice how closely he was watching you. How his gaze kept drifting from the screen to your face, following the animated expressions as you dissected every plot hole and ridiculous twist.
"Okay," you said, near the end, "if they don't explain the thing with the necklace, I'm going to-"
"You're going to what?" he asked, his voice a low murmur close to your ear.
You turned to look at him.
He was closer than you'd realized. Close enough that you could see the flecks of gold in his eyes even in the dark. The slight smile on his lips. The way his attention was entirely, completely on you.
"I..."
He didn't look away.
On screen, the climax of the movie played out, but neither of you was watching.
The movie ended, predictably, with a twist that made no sense.
"That was terrible." you announced as you walked out of the theater. "I want my two hours back."
"I want your commentary back," he said, bumping your shoulder with his. "That was the best part."
"Oh, so you weren't even watching the movie?"
"I was watching you watch the movie," he admitted. "Much more entertaining."
You felt your cheeks warm.
"Want to grab a drink? I know a place."
"Is it another surprise?"
"You'll have to find out."
He drove you away from the city, away from the lights and noise, to a place you'd never been before. A small park on a hill, overlooking the valley below. The stars were visible here, scattered across the sky like spilled salt, and the only sounds were the rustle of leaves and the distant hum of the city far below.
He parked the motorcycle and led you to a wooden bench, perfectly positioned to watch the night sky.
"Soda?" he offered, pulling two cans from his jacket pocket.
"You just carry soda around with you?"
"Only on special occasions."
You took the can, your fingers brushing his, and sat down beside him. The bench was just big enough for two, and you were close enough that your shoulders touched.
The stars were beautiful.
So was he.
You tried not to think about it.
Couples passed by occasionally. A pair stopped near a tree to kiss. You deliberately looked away, focusing on the sky above.
Don't look. Don't think about it.
"Hey."
You turned.
Mydei was looking at you, his eyes soft in the starlight. His hand came up to cup your jaw.
And then he kissed you.
His lips were warm and firm, tasting faintly of the soda he'd been drinking. His other hand found your back, steadying you, pulling you closer.
You kissed him back, your hand finding his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath your palm.
When he pulled back, his forehead rested against yours, his breath warm on your lips.
"Wow..." you breathed.
"Wow indeed." he agreed.
And for a moment, everything was perfect.
The ride back to your dorm was quiet. His hand found yours when you stopped at a light, and he gave it a gentle squeeze.
"Same time next week?" he asked when you pulled off your helmet.
"I'd like that." you said. And you meant it.
He smiled. "I'll text you."
You watched him drive away, then headed inside, your heart full and your mind churning.
This was getting out of control.
You'd started this for a bet. For a stupid, childish challenge that Himari had thrown at you.
But now. Now you actually cared about him.
And the thought of graduation, of the bet ending, of having to explain everything- You shook your head, pushing the thoughts away.
You'd figure it out. You had to. You couldn't lose the bet.
Mydei unlocked his apartment door, stepped inside, and locked it behind him.
Then he leaned back against the wood, his hand coming up to his lips.
He'dĀ kissedĀ you.
The memory of it played on loop in his mind, the softness of your lips, the warmth of you in his arms, the way you'd looked at him like he was the only person in the world.
His ears burned.
He slid down the door, sitting on the floor, a stupid grin spreading across his face.
He couldn't wait to see you again.
He couldn't wait to kiss you again.
He couldn't wait.
---
At school, the routine continued.
He brought you milk and snacks during recess, always with a quick smile and a "don't forget to eat." You visited his practices, your camera capturing him in motion, and he'd glance up at you with that soft smile that made your heart flutter.
His friends started noticing.
Phainon cornered him after practice one day, a knowing grin on his face. "About Y/N."
"What?"
"Nothing. Just.. you took a lot of photos of them."
"I like taking photos."
"Hmm.. okay."
You saw the way his friends would glance at you when you arrived at practice.
"Your friends are staring," you said one afternoon, helping him pack his bag.
"They're jealous." He said it simply, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "I get to spend time with you. They don't."
Your cheeks flushed. "You're ridiculous."
"You like it."
He was right. You did.
----
The afternoon sun filtered through the campus trees, casting dappled shadows across the courtyard. Mydei was walking with Phainon, heading toward the humanities building to find you before your next class.
His eyes had found you.
You were standing near the fountain, a cluster of art students around you. A guy with dark hair and round glasses was leaning in close, pointing at something in your hands. Printed photos, from the look of it. You were laughing at something he said, your head tilted back, and the guy's hand brushed yours as he reached for another photo.
Mydei's jaw tightened.
Phainon noticed immediately. He followed Mydei's gaze, and a grin spread across his face.
"Jealous?" he asked, his voice dripping with amusement.
Mydei's expression didn't change. He turned away, nudging Phainon with his elbow. "Hardly."
"You were staring."
"I was looking."
"Same thing."
"It's not." Mydei resumed walking, but his pace was faster now. "They're just friends. They're probably comparing work."
"Uh-huh." Phainon jogged to catch up. "And that's why you look like you want to punch that guy's face in?"
"I don't look like that."
"You absolutely look like that."
Mydei shot him a warning glance, but Phainon was undeterred. He'd known Mydei long enough to recognize when he was unsettled.
Mydei stopped walking. He turned to look at Phainon, "What's your point?"
Phainon held up his hands in surrender. "No point. Just.. be careful, alright? You're not exactly the most expressive person. Y/N might not realize how much you actually care."
Mydei was quiet for a long moment. Then he turned and continued walking.
"I'll keep that in mind."
He didn't make it to your class.
By the time he arrived, you'd already left. He saw you walking across campus with the same group of students, the guy still by your side, and he decided to give you space.
You'd texted him later that night.
You:Ā Sorry! Got caught up with a group project.
Mydei:Ā It's fine. I saw you anyway.
You:Ā Saw me?
Mydei: You looked busy.
You:Ā Ah, yeah. Ayato roped me into something. He got me a part-time job opportunity, I can't really turn it down. It's good experience.
Mydei:Ā That sounds great. You should take it.
You:Ā You sure? I might not be able to come to your practices as often.
Mydei:Ā It's fine. Focus on your work.
He typed the words easily enough. But his chest felt tight.
You'd accepted the job Ayato offered, a freelance photography gig for a local magazine, nothing huge but a step toward your career goals. The hours were unpredictable, the deadlines demanding, and by the time you collapsed into bed each night, you barely had energy to text.
Mydei understood.
Or at least, he told himself he did.
He'd send you good morning texts, receive a sleepy reply an hour later. He'd ask about your day, get a brief update between editing sessions. He'd invite you to his practices, but you always had to decline.
You:Ā I'm so sorry. Another shoot ran late.
Mydei:Ā It's okay. We have a match this weekend. You'll come?
You:Ā I'll try. I promise.
He'd stare at that message for too long, reading between lines that might not even exist.
----
His team had fought hard, pushed through exhaustion, and emerged victorious. The gym erupted in cheers. His teammates mobbed him, Phainon clapping him on the back with a grin. It was a good win. A solid win.
But Mydei didn't feel it.
His eyes kept drifting to the bleachers, searching for a familiar figure with a camera. He'd told himself you might not make it. He'd prepared for it.
Still.
The disappointment settled in his chest like a stone.
He checked his phone after the game. A message from you.
You:Ā I'm so sorry. I couldn't get away. Good luck, you've got this. I know you'll win.
He typed back quickly.
Mydei:Ā We did. Don't worry about it.
He pocketed his phone and walked out of the gym.
It was pouring outside.
The rain came down in sheets, turning the campus into a blur of grey and black. Students dashed between buildings, umbrellas bobbing like scattered flowers. Mydei stood under the awning of the gym, watching the water pool on the pavement.
He'd forgotten his umbrella.
He considered waiting. It could let up. It probably would.
But the weight in his chest was heavier than any rain, and suddenly, he didn't care about getting wet. He stepped out into the downpour, the cold shock of water hitting his skin a welcome distraction.
He was halfway across the courtyard when he felt it.
The rain stopped falling on him.
You were standing there, an umbrella held high above his head, your breath coming in quick gasps. Your clothes were damp, your hair plastered to your face, and you were holding the umbrella with both hands like you'd been running.
"I'm sorry," you said, your voice a little breathless. "I'm so sorry I'm late."
He stared at you.
The rain continued to pour around you, but under the umbrella, there was only you. Your cheeks, flushed from running. Your hand, trembling slightly from the effort of holding the umbrella steady.
"The match. I..." You swallowed. "My shoot ran over and I tried to get here but I couldn't... I was so worried I'd miss youā"
And then he was pulling you into his arms.
The umbrella slipped from your grip and fell to the ground.
His arms wrapped around you, crushing you against his chest, his face buried in your hair. He turned instinctively, his back to the rain, shielding you from the worst of it.
"You came." he murmured, his voice muffled against you.
"I said I'd try."
He held you tighter.
You were soaking wet. He was soaking wet. The rain soaked through your clothes, cold and relentless, and neither of you moved.
When he finally pulled back, his eyes were bright. "You're going to get sick."
"So are you."
"I don't get sick."
He giggled and bent down to pick up the fallen umbrella. He held it over both of you, his arm coming to rest around your shoulders.
"Your place or mine?"
"Yours is farther," you pointed out. "Mine's just off campus."
"Mine it is."
"I saidĀ mineĀ is closer."
"I heard you." He tugged you closer, shielding you from the rain as you started walking.
Your apartment was small but warm.
Mydei stood in the doorway, dripping on the mat.
"Bathroom's through there," you said, pointing. "Towels are in the cabinet. I'll find you something to wear."
He nodded, still looking around. His eyes landed on the photos on the wall, your work, mostly, candid shots of campus life, of friends, of moments that mattered to you.
Later, he emerged from the bathroom, wearing the clothes you gave him. His hair was still damp, curling slightly at the ends.
You'd changed too. The kettle was boiling on the counter, and you were stirring two cups of tea.
You settled on the floor together, the tea warming your hands, and you pulled out an old photo album because he seemed to focus on it.
"These are from my first year."
He leaned in, his shoulder brushing yours.
The photos were a timeline of your life.
He stopped at a page of photos taken at his games.
"You kept these."
"Of course I kept them." You didn't look at him. "They're good photos."
"Not the team. Me."
He pointed at a photo of him mid-shot, the ball leaving his fingers, his face a mask of concentration.
"I mean, I took a lot of photos.."
Then he didn't say anything. He just turned the page.
"These are beautiful." he said quietly.
You opened your mouth to respond, but your phone buzzed. You glanced at it and sighed.
"I'm sorry, I have to send a few emails for work."
"Take your time."
Mydei sat on the floor, surrounded by the pages of your life. The photos.
He picked up the album, flipping back to the page with his photos.
His fingers traced the edge of one. He lifted the album to his face.
And took a long, slow inhale.
It smelled like you.
The same scent that clung to your clothes, your pillows, your skin. He closed his eyes, savoring it.
He wanted to stay here forever. In your room, surrounded by your things, breathing the same air as you.
When you came back, he'd closed the album and was scrolling through his phone.
The rain stopped an hour later.
"Thank you," he said. "For the clothes. For the tea. Forā"
"Coming to the match?" You smiled. "I said I'd try."
"See you."
He leaned in, just for a moment, just to brush his lips against your forehead, and then he was gone.
---
The afternoon sun cast long shadows across campus as Mydei rounded the corner near the humanities building. He'd been looking for you, wanted to surprise you with coffee when he stopped short.
You were talking to Ayato.
You were laughing at something Ayato said, your head tilted back, that open, warm laugh that Mydei had come to treasure. Ayato was leaning in, his hand brushing your arm.
Mydei couldn't hear the full conversation. Just fragments.
"..this weekend, if you're free..."
"I'd love to, actually"
"...just the two of us."
You turned then, your eyes landing on him, and you startled visibly. A flash of guilt crossed your face, or was that his imagination, before you smiled and waved him over.
"Mydei! Good timing." You stepped toward him, and Ayato followed. "We were just about to come find you. Ayato's working on interview questions for the yearbook, and he wanted some input from a student athlete. I thought you'd be perfect to help."
"Interview questions?"
"Just examples," Ayato said smoothly. "We want to make sure the questions are relevant. You know how it is."
He didn't care.
But he nodded anyway. "I can help."
"Great!" You beamed at him, and the warmth in your eyes eased something in his chest. "We were just about to head to the club room. Come on."
The club room was cluttered with yearbooks, camera equipment, and stacks of papers. You settled into a chair, pulling out a notebook, while Ayato sat across from you. Mydei took the seat beside you, close enough that his knee brushed yours.
"So," Ayato began, flipping through his notes, "we're looking for questions that capture the student experience."
"Like what?" Mydei asked, his voice flat.
"What's the one memory from your time here that you'll never forget?"
You were already writing, your pen moving across the page. "That's a good one. What about the hardest challenge you've faced?"
Mydei answered mechanically, his mind elsewhere. He was watching the way Ayato leaned toward you, the way his eyes lingered on your face. The way you seemed so comfortable with him.
He hated it.
Your pen slipped from your fingers, rolling under the table.
"I'll get it." you said, already bending down.
"I've got it." Ayato said at the same time, reaching under the table.
You both dove for the pen. Mydei saw your heads heading for a collision and his hand moved before he could think.
He covered your head with his palm, shielding you just as Ayato's head bumped into his hand instead.
"Careful." Mydei said. His hand lingered on your head for a moment longer than necessary.
"Thanks."
Ayato straightened, the pen in his hand. He handed it to you, his expression a little sheepish. "Sorry about that."
"It's fine. My fault." You took the pen, your fingers brushing Ayato's, and Mydei's jaw tightened.
He pulled his hand back.
"Let's finish this," he said. "I have practice soon."
You worked through the questions, drafting sample answers, and Mydei contributed when asked. His voice was professional, but his eyes never left you.
When it was done, you thanked him with a smile. "You're a lifesaver. I'll text you later?"
"Sure," he said. "I'll see you around."
He walked out of the club room, his hands shoved in his pockets.
The door clicked shut behind him.
This is no good.
How long had that been going on? How long had you been spending time with Ayato without telling him?
He should ask you. He should just.. ask.
But the thought of hearing the answer made his stomach turn.
So he didn't.
Instead, he made a decision.
The next day, Mydei followed Ayato.
It was late afternoon, the sky beginning to darken. Ayato was walking alone, his attention on his phone. He didn't notice Mydei several paces behind.
Mydei didn't know what he was doing. He didn't have a plan. He just knew that he couldn't let Ayato keep spending time with you.
A car rounded the corner, its headlights cutting through the twilight.
Mydei saw his chance.
----
He'd done what he needed to do. Nothing serious. Just enough to keep Ayato away for a while.
He told himself it was justified.
The next practice, you arrived during his break.
"Hey," you said, handing him a water bottle. "Thought you might need this."
Mydei took it, his fingers brushing yours. "Thanks."
You settled beside him on the bench, watching the rest of his team. The gym was loud with the squeak of sneakers and the thud of the ball.
"How's the interview going?"
"Almost done. Just a few more questions to finalize." You stretched your arms above your head. "Graduation's coming up fast. I have so much to do, handing over my notes to the new club members, the yearbook layout..."
"Busy."
"Always."
His teammates drifted away, heading for the locker room, and suddenly, you were alone.
Mydei set down the water bottle. "Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"The other day. With Ayato." He paused, choosing his words carefully. "He asked you somewhere this weekend?"
"Yeah, he did. It's for the yearbook, we're scouting locations for the photos. Why?"
Something loosened in Mydei's chest. "Just the yearbook?"
"Is that what you were worried about?" You laughed, "Mydei, I've been drowning in work. I barely have time to breathe. Whatever Ayato asked me, it was probably work-related. What else would it be?"
He nodded as he reached down to grab a towel that had fallen to the floor, and a sharp pain shot through his side.
He winced.
You noticed immediately.
"Mydei?" You leaned forward, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"You winced."
"It's fine."
You didn't believe him. You reached out, your fingers finding the hem of his shirt. Before he could stop you, you'd lifted it, exposing his torso.
A bruise bloomed near his ribs, spreading across his skin like a storm cloud.
"What happened?"
"It's nothing." he said again, pulling his shirt down. "I fell during practice. It happens."
He looked at you, at the concern etched into your face, the worry in your eyes, and something in him cracked.
"I'll go to the infirmary." he said quietly. "After practice."
"Now."
"After practice."
"Now." you repeated, and your voice left no room for argument.
He sighed. "Fine."
You watched him gather his things, your gaze lingering on him with an intensity that made his chest ache.
"I'll text you later." he said.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
The days that followed were a blur of missed texts and canceled plans.
You were busy, genuinely busy, buried in graduation preparations and club handovers and thesis revisions. Mydei was busy too, with final practices and exams and the chaos of wrapping up his own coursework.
The texts were brief. The calls, even briefer.
----
Graduation day.
The auditorium was packed with students in caps and gowns, families in their best clothes, cameras flashing from every angle. The air hummed with excitement and nostalgia, the bittersweet weight of endings and beginnings.
You sat in the row with your classmates, your cap slightly askew, a smile on your face.
You'd made it.
The ceremony was a blur of speeches and names and applause. You clapped for your friends, cheered for Himari, who blew you a kiss from across the aisle.
And then, when it was over, you spilled out into the sunlight, laughing and crying and hugging everyone in sight.
You searched the crowd for Mydei.
You found him at the edge of the courtyard, surrounded by his teammates.
You made your way toward him, weaving through the crowd.
He met you halfway.
"Congratulations."
"Congratulations to you too."
He pulled you into a hug. His arms wrapped around you, and you buried your face in his shoulder.
"Are you okay?" you asked, your voice muffled against his gown.
"Better now."
You pulled back, meeting his eyes.
"We made it." you said.
You couldn't drag this out any longer.
You glanced over Mydei's shoulder. Himari was watching you from across the courtyard, her arms crossed, her expression expectant. She'd been waiting for this. Waiting for you to finally tell him the truth.
You swallowed hard.
"Mydei," you said, your voice barely audible over the noise. "Can we go somewhere? Just for a minute?"
"Of course."
You led him away from the crowd, past the auditorium, to a quiet corner behind the building. The noise faded to a distant hum. It was just the two of you.
You turned to face him.
"There's something I need to tell you."
He waited.
The guilt was suffocating.
"Remember the day I confessed to you? After the game?" You couldn't meet his eyes. "It wasn't... it wasn't entirely genuine. Himari made a bet with me. She said if I could make a relationship last until graduation, she'd give me anything I wanted."
You forced yourself to look up.
Mydei was frozen.
His eyes were hollow.
"I thought it would be easy. Just pretend for a while, win the bet, and move on. But then I got to know you, and you were soā" You choked on the words. "You were so wonderful, and I realized I actually cared about you, and I wanted to tell you so many times, but I was scared and I didn't know how-"
"Stop."
You stopped.
He stared at you for a long moment. His jaw was tight, his hands clenched at his sides.
"You used me..?" he said. His voice cracked on the last word. "This whole time?"
"I was... IĀ am.." You reached for him. "I didn't plan for that. It just-"
"Don't. I don't want to hear anything else." He stepped back, out of your reach. "I thought you were different."
A tear slipped down his cheek.
Then another.
He wiped them away with the back of his hand, his expression crumbling.
"Please let me explainā"
"There's nothing to explain." His voice was flat now. "You made a bet. You won."
He turned and walked away.
You stood there, frozen, watching him disappear around the corner.
And then you sank to the ground, your knees giving out, and you let yourself cry.
You returned to Himari with red-rimmed eyes and a hollow chest.
She took one look at you and her smile faltered. "How did it go?"
"How do you think it went?"
"Shit." She pulled you into a hug. "I'm sorry."
"Just shut up, Himari."
You stood there, wrapped in her arms, and felt nothing.
The rest of the day passed in a blur.
This should have been the happiest day of your life.
Instead, it was the worst.
---
That night, you were curled up in your room, staring at the ceiling, when your phone buzzed.
Your heart lurched.
You grabbed it, hoping that it was Mydei.
It was.
The message was a photo. A picture of a familiar house.
Himari's house.
Mydei:Ā I'm sorry. The problem isn't you.
You stared at the message, your hands shaking.
You:Ā Mydei. What are you doing?
Mydei:Ā I'm going to fix this. She ruined everything.
You:Ā Don't do anything stupid.
Mydei:Ā After I'm done with her, I'll end myself. Then neither of us will be a problem anymore.
You scrambled to your feet, grabbing your jacket, your keys, anything.
You:Ā Don't move. Don't do anything. I'm coming.
You arrived at Himari's house breathless, your lungs burning. The gate was open. The front door was ajar.
And there, in the garden, stood Mydei.
He had a knife in his hand.
"Stop!" you shouted, "Mydei, put that down!"
He turned to look at you. "She's inside."
"Don't do this." You crossed the garden, your hands raised.
"She turned you against me. She made you lie."
"Nobody turned me against you," you said, stepping closer. "I did this. It was my choice. My mistake. Please, please don't blame her for something I did."
He shook his head, tears streaming down his face. "You were the only one. And she took that away."
"She didn't," you said. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
He raised the knife.
"You're lying," he repeated. "Just like before. Just like always."
And then he turned toward the house.
"MYDEI!"
You lunged forward. Your hand closed around his wrist just as he raised the knife, and in the struggle, the blade swung toward your face.
Blood trickled down your cheek, dripping onto your jacket.
The knife clattered to the ground.
He dropped to his knees, his hands reaching for you. His fingers pressed against the cut, trying to stop the bleeding.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.."
"It's just a scratch. It stings a little, but I'll be fine."
"You're bleeding."
"It's not deep."
His arms wrapped around you, crushing you to his chest, his body shaking with sobs.
"I'm sorry," he gasped, his voice muffled against your shoulder. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."
You held him, patting his back, your own tears mixing with the blood on your cheek.
"No.. I'm sorry." you whispered.
"Please. Please don't leave me. I know I don't deserve you. I know I should let you go. But I can't. I can't, I can'tā"
"Shh." You pressed your forehead to his.
He clung to you like you were the only thing keeping him tethered to the earth.
The hospital visit was brief. A few stitches, a tetanus shot, and a stern warning about keeping the wound clean.
You sat in the waiting room, Mydei beside you, his hand gripping yours like he was afraid you'd disappear.
"Can I stay with you tonight?"
You looked at himāat the exhaustion etched into his features, the guilt weighing down his shoulders.
"Okay."
Back at your apartment, you laid out a mat on the floor for him. He refused to take the bed, insisted on staying on the floor, close to you.
You climbed into bed, your body aching with exhaustion, and closed your eyes. The last thing you saw was Mydei, sitting up on the floor, his eyes fixed on you.
"Goodnight."
You fell asleep within minutes.
Mydei didn't sleep.
He sat on the floor, his back against the bed, watching you breathe. The rise and fall of your chest. The soft flutter of your eyelids. The bandage on your cheek.
He reached up, his fingers brushing a strand of hair from your face. You stirred slightly, then settled.
He'd do anything to get back into your life.
The moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting silver patterns across your sleeping face.
He did it.
And he'd do far worse if necessary, to make sure you never left again. But lucky for you, you'd done the right thing. You'd come to him. You'd stopped him. You'd promised to stay.
And he was going to make sure you kept that promise.
He pulled out his phone, the screen lighting up his face in the darkness. He opened his hidden album, the one you didn't know about, the one filled with photos of you.
Every single one was a piece of you. And he wanted all of them.
He angled his phone toward you, capturing the soft rise and fall of your chest, the gentle curve of your lips, the bandage on your cheek that marked you as his.
Can't wait to be with you forever.
He tucked his phone away.
He settled back against the bed, his eyes still fixed on you.
You stirred slightly, a soft murmur escaping your lips. He reached up, brushing his fingers through your hair.
"Sleep well."

WORD COUNT āā 22.6k
CRYSTAL, CERULEAN SKIES, EMERALD, lush forests, active and excitable insects, and the sweet summer smells of dew, salty lake water, and vigor make up the bulk of your memories of Paradise Valley: the summer camp for troubled adolescents that your father sent you to for seven years straight. It was charming, hazed refractions heightening the view into something glorious to behold. It was paradise, in name and aesthetics, to be home for the bad to develop into good, to find solace in uncontrollable emotions.Ā
Day four begins with a sweltering heatāthe kind of heat that seeps deep into your pores, running amok in and on you. The kind of heat that is sticky, murky, and thick, honeyed. Palpable, like you can run your hands through the breeze and grasp a handful. It is disgusting. Youāre already slicked with sweat by the time the campers burst into the mess hall for breakfast, dripping by the time youāre cleaning up after them.Ā
The other counselors had led the runts toward the west amphitheater, this morningās lesson on big emotions and healthy coping preceding a fun paintball tag activity. Lucky you, youāre stuck in the stuffy, artisanal chalet, sweeping up egg yolks and washing scratched plates. And it was quiet, suffocatingly so. The type of quiet that echoes your routine breaths into heaves, building up every whistle of the warm wind into an exhale down your back. No matter the generic pop station playing on the old radioāeverything feels slinking and inky. It would be comforting, but there was this itchy feeling, latched onto the heat and carried down your spine in a succession of icy shivers. Eliciting the kind of alertness that comes from being watched. It doesnāt help that the window above the sink looks right into the head of dense forest with trees that threatened to swallow the acres whole. Whether you look ahead or down into the sink, there is a stalking feeling that crept from in between those evergreens.
But you keep washing. The sooner you finish, the sooner you can cool off in your cabin before your team scavenger hunt. Your gloved hand grips the handful of utensils tightly, the other furiously running up and down the dirtied silverware. Itās here, in your mindless rinsing, where the faucet water split off around the heads of the utensils, that you notice it: the radio crackling.
Small, itsy crackles, like shy sparks of a fire. Not enough to scare you, just enough for you to notice.
You pause your work. Turn your head a little to the left, eyes landing directly on the small radio box. It skips and cracks some more, the voice distorting into a monotonous, robotic utteranceā just barely above a whisper, combating against the scratch.
It was sudden. It was out of place. It was eerie.Ā
You had had enough after a grueling ninety seconds; you drop the silverware back into the sink with a grating collision, stalking over to the rustic box with the soapy gloves coming off. You fill the space with a sigh and follow with humsāanything to let your heart catch up with your mind. Youāre okay, even if it was hard to feel it.
Bashing the old box doesnāt do much, nor does tuning the station. You sigh defeatedly, running your fingers along the top in search of the power knob.
And then it was like the radio noticed you noticing its stammers and it needed a moment to itself. It screeched and burst with static. You jump back, hands cupping your ears, āDamned thing!ā
Damned it isāfor you swear, you heard the static form words.Ā
Che..ckā¦yār..win..dowā¦
Maybe youāre making it up. Maybe your brain is fighting against reason and wanted to be scared. Just maybe. But the static stops after that. The music returns normally, as if there were no interruptionābest to just leave it alone.
And then there is a person in the window. A glimpse, rather, a head.
Dark hair, hazy features. Like it was a dream, and despite all sense of familiarity, a face to the feeling was lost to nature.Ā
Your body goes stiff. The gloves fall from where you placed them on the shelf with the softest, rubber thud, and you jump, gasping a breath of shock.Ā
Only when you had just begun to rationalize what youād experiencedāan elaborate prank by the other counselors, an ill-timed janitorial appearance following a wildly imaginative auditory hallucination, a breath of wind vaguely resembling somethingādid you jump out of your skin. You arenāt alone anymore; a soft, questioning whisper of your name made that clear.
Dan Heng stands before the door, eyebrows furrowed softly. āAre you alright?ā
Your smile breaks uneasily. You nod, āYeah. The radio..it was just on the fritzā¦spooked me a little.ā You donāt know why you decide to omit what you think you saw. Maybe to tell yourself that you actually didnāt see anything. Youāre just in your head. āDid you need something?ā
āWaters,ā he says flatly, āthe paintball group is wearing the kids out in the heatā¦March asked me to bring some over.ā
You nod. Let the silence take over.Ā
Heās almost hesitant to move, as though the kitchen is your sacred space. Itās in a wordless succession of awkwardness that you usher his direction toward the industrial refrigerator. Dan Heng moves, dragging a wheeled cooler behind him. The way the wheels squeaked, meek sounds fighting for attention, made you remember the sink was still furiously pouring down.
You damn near jump out of your shoes, quick to spin and turn the sink off. And when you do, you make sure to glare out of the window, angling your head both left and right to panorama as much as you can.Ā
Thereās nothing. No one.Ā
But thereās Dan Heng. There are still his eyes, whose glare is warm and aliveāreal. And you feel them looking at you, albeit shyly. To you, then away, to you, then away, to youā
āIs your schedule packed today?āĀ
āWith a whole bunchāa cleaning and supervising duties,ā you dryly laugh, nodding. āI have a break after thisā¦that is, until lunch.ā
āThat sucks.ā
āYeah, it does.ā
āI can keep you company tonight. At dinnerāI also got shackled with cleaningā¦ā He says, his voice quickening out of embarrassment. A light blush blooms over his cheeks. Itās endearing. It has you smiling widely.
āThatād be nice,ā you reply. āKeep an eye out for me. Iāll probably be sitting right back there, hoping the kids donāt notice me.ā You point out of the kitchen, toward the back right corner of the mess hall. Itās a dusty corner, right beside the back door, decked with a set of old chairs and cobwebs.
He nods, fingers dancing on the top of the now-closed and full cooler. āBack corner, gotta stay inconspicuous, okay, got it.ā
The smile that comes across your face is slightly humored, slightly coyāyou find his quiet mumbles endearing. Cute, even.
āWell, Iāll see you,ā he says awkwardly, dragging the cooler away with him.
You wave at him, leaning against the counter.Ā
See you.
It wasnāt just the heat making you hot anymore. Itās excitement, racing through your veins on a mission, bringing the same name and face to your brain. As the day slowly passes along, you find yourself returning to your short interaction, your heart beating impatiently, waiting for the night to fall.
And when it comes, it comes just as vengefully. Even in the night, the heat refused to subside; instead, it swelled, enveloping your skin in a sticky, humid layer. The AC does little to nothing with 260 children vibrating around, and other counselors and staff stalking around, patrolling. The stove is still warm, radiating heat throughout the kitchen and into the dining area. You and Dan Heng, sitting right in the way of the hot draft, are suffering. Both of you are slicked with sweat, shining under the high yellow lights.Ā
Normally, the heat would cling to your nerves and render you irritable. But tonight, as much as it bothers you, it has no real effect. Not when youāre talking to him.
Heās surprisingly easy to talk to. Youād thought the butterflies in your stomach would be a hindrance, a stupefying effect thatād render you a blubbering mess, but they brought a sense of familiarity, closeness. Heās charming, heās endearing, heās a good distraction from all the heat and the troubles left at home. He keeps you here, in this moment, in those autumnal irises, at ease.Ā
Your hand runs down his forearm as you laugh, albeit too hard, but youāre a forward womanāyouāre making a move. āI canāt believe that,ā you let your hand linger, catching his eyes. You give him a coy, small smile. āIām trying really hard to imagine you fighting. Youāre tooā¦calm a guy; I wouldāve never guessed.ā
āYeah, well, neither did the kid,ā he laughs. āI apologized to him after, though. I felt really bad.ā
āI would hope so! You said you broke his noseāā
āI think I broke his nose,ā he corrects.
āSee, Iāve been punched in the nose before. Dāyou know how hard youāve gotta hit someone to think you broke their nose?ā
āWhy were you punched in the nose?ā He asks, softly laughing, covertly switching the subject.
You pull your hand up to lean your head on it, adjusting your seating position. You turn toward him, letting your high foot knock slightly against his leg. āAh, wellā¦ā you sing, bouncing your leg, āI got in a bit of trouble when I was younger. Gossiping, arguingā¦eventually, I had to back up all the shit I was talking. It happened a lot, and my dad got fed up, so he started sending me here. It was right out there, in the courtyard, where Mei Bosenmori punched the shit out of me. Not much changed for me here.ā
āIs it okay to ask why she punched you?ā
āYeah,ā you nod, ābasically, I was runāā
āUm, excuse me, miss?ā A small voice approached.
You turn around and see a girl, one of the younger children, standing with her legs crossed and her face hot. You immediately straighten up with concern. āAre you alright?ā You ask, completely turning to her.
āI need to pee,ā she says flatly. āCan you take me to the bathroom?ā
You laugh, awkwardly and dryly. āUhā¦you canāt take yourself? The outhouse is right out there.ā
āCampers arenāt allowed to leave without supervision.ā Now her tone is matter-of-fact, and her expression is annoyed. She crosses her arms with a huff, āIām not getting in trouble ācause youāre lazy.ā
āWhoa, whoa, hey now. Insulting others is not how we get what we want, now is it?ā Dan Heng interjects, his voice soft and leading. The child seems over it, shrugging as she nods along. He smiles, āWhy donāt I take you to the restroom? Is that alright?ā
She visibly recoils, stepping back. āUmā¦youāre a boy. Boys and girls shouldnāt go to the bathroom together, unless heās a pervert. Are you a pervert?ā
You snicker softly, pinching the bridge of your nose with slight exasperation. Itās only been four days, and these kids have tested your patience and your will. Itās hard to understand why you took up this job, but you wonāt lie and say youāre not entertained. You decide to humor her, clapping your hands on your knees as you stand up.
āLetās get you to the bathroom, yeah?ā
The breeze offers little to no brevity as you stand outside. The outhouse offers little to no privacy as the little girl pisses in the low toilet. Itās loud, and quite uncomfortable for you to listen to; you take two wide steps to your left, crossing your arms with a huff.
The trees and shrubs rustle with the wind. You find yourself looking up into the night, at the dark clouds that loom over the acreage. Youāre hoping it doesnāt rain; that would suck. The campers would get all snot-nosed and whiny, and catching a cold in the middle of the woods would be a serious damper. Nurse Natasha could only do so much for those kids.
āMiss? Hello?ā The little voice calls, shrouded by the outhouseās wooden walls. āHeeellloooo?ā
āYes? Yes, Iām here; what is it?ā
āUmā¦thereās no toilet paper in here.ā
You sigh exasperatedly, throwing your head back over your shoulders. It would be the hottest day when your patience is tested. Pinching the bridge of your nose, you step closer to the outhouse. It smells a bit rotten, like cured urine and broccoli with cheese lunches. You frown deeply, āYou canātā¦dunno, shake it off?ā
āEw!ā She yelps, āNo! Thatās so gross!!ā
āYouāre about to go back to your cabin; you have to shower anyway!ā You argue back. Then you sigh again, drooping your shoulders defeatedly. If thereās anything youāve learned about this little girl in the last ten minutes, itās that sheās as stubborn as a fat rock. āWhatever..just wait a second. Donāt go anywhere.ā
āWasnāt planning on it!ā
You pull the neglected walkie-talkie from your left hip, tweaking the station until you hear a faint buzz emerge. You clear your throat, announcing yourself, āUh, the dining hall outhouse needs toilet paper, stat. ā¦Bratty camper, wonāt leave without it. ā¦Over?ā
The walkie crackles for a second. Then you hear a deep breath, but it sounds like it's coming from farther than youāre holding the device. An acute chill races up you. You look over your shoulder slightly, just to alleviate the feeling that someone is behind you, breathing on you. Thereās nothing but the long, darkened forest.
āFresh roll is heading your way.ā A voice comes from the walkie. You turn your attention back to the device. A small smile breaches your face; you can tell itās Dan Heng.
Then the walkie rumbles again. āYāknow, you donāt need to say āoverā, right? We arenāt special agents or anything.ā Thatās Marchāher teasing tone gives her smile away.Ā
You shake your head, āYeah, yeah, whatever. Just get here. Hurry.ā
Youāre looking over your shoulder again as you say that. It feels like the trees have eyes, or something, someone who does is stalking among them. You creep toward the wretched outhouse, just to know youāre not alone.
āSomeoneās cranky,ā March giggles, āYāsure youāre not the bratty camper?ā
āOh, shut up.ā
āWe need to keep this channel clear, everyone.ā And thatās Mr. Yang. His steady, stern voice silences even the static.Ā
You hook the walkie back on your waistband. You slot your hands in your back pockets, crossing your legs as you stand in the breeze. You tell yourself that the feeling youāre getting is the thick air running against your dewed skin, not someone ghosting over you.
Even as a kid, youād get the feeling that someone was lurking nearby. Back in the day, the camp was less structured than it is now: the wooden guardrails and barbed fences didnāt exist to keep the woods at bay. Deer and ducks and foxes would wander all over campus, rummaging in trashcans and homing in dark corners. It was explainable thenāthe weird noises and stalking energy. You have to work overtime now to convince yourself that the earth is simply alive around you, and nothing else.
But, there it goes again: the rustling, the whisper of a presence. Leaves crinkle, branches dance.Ā
You whip around, eyes wide, then squinting, surveying the dark. Nothing seems out of order. If anything, it seems too normal, too stagnant. Like a disguise in plain sight. Goosebumps raise all over your body.Ā
And itās so quiet. The sounds of the dining hall are fairly contained within the thick walls. Itās the buzzing of the bugs, the yellow lights, you keep telling yourself. Maybe even a family of raccoons or foxes under the brush. Something, anything to make sense of what sounds like footsteps, rapid and hardly concealed in the blades of grass.Ā
āHello?ā You call out. You donāt know whyāyou curse yourself mentally as soon as it comes out.
There isnāt a reply. You donāt feel relief at that.
The breeze has picked up momentarily; there, again, go the footsteps. Closer, like theyāre coming behind you. Your skin begins to crawl.
You spin around again. āIs someone there?ā You ask, your voice slightly shaking.Ā
Again, there isnāt a reply. Just the darkness, the forest that seems to lurch over you the longer you stand here.
Eyes pressing tightly, you begin whispering to yourself to Get out of your head, idiot; itās nothing; itās not real. Making a full revolution, you turn back west, ready to walkie on the status of the toilet paper.
You nearly jump out of your skin, yelping as your eyes open to reveal Stelle. āOh my fucking God! You scared me!ā You say, a steadying hand on your chest. Then, youāre swatting at her with your opposite hand, āDonāt sneak up on me like that.ā
She looks so confused. Her head tilts, and her hand raises, a roll of toilet paper around her wrist, āWell, excuse me. Iāll be more mindful the next time I decide to do you a favor.ā
āWhatever,ā you exhale. She passes off the roll, and you brush past her, knocking on the outhouse door. āDelivery!ā You sing. You roll your eyes after the girl quickly opens the door and receives her toilet paper, slamming it back shut.
Stelle looks even more confused. āOkay, whatās got your panties in a twist?ā
āNothing, Iā¦ā you trail off, your eyes drifting behind her, into the woods. The greenery moves with the wind, which has tempered off into a steady whisper. And youāre not hearing what you thought were footsteps; and youāre not feeling what felt like eyes stalking you. You exhale deeply, shaking your head. āIām just tired. Itās been a long ass day.ā
Stelle laughs, āGet used to it. Theyāre only gonna get longer.ā
Your eyes are still focused behind her. āYeah, I bet,ā you say.
The overhead speakers crackle; the alert song chimes. Itās seven PM: DING DING, DONG DONG, and then itās Ms Himekoās voice saying, āGood evening, Paradise Valley; itās seven PM; dinnertime has ended. Campers, please return to your cabins for the night. We hope to see your bright smiles tomorrow, for another day of growth and prosperity.ā
ā-----
On Fridays, the campers are rewarded with a big bonfire and an extra hour of recreation. Itās said to reward the children for their progressāpositive reinforcement, to give them an incentive to keep going. Kids who are especially petulant or stagnant are not rewarded: they have to sit out, write reflections, and watch all of their peers run and laugh and play.
When you were a camper, oftentimes, you found yourself a part of the Purgatory Plaināthe name given to the loserās circle. A short temper and eager fists always warranted the punishment. Now, youāre here, the supervising counsel to the straggling bunch.
Youāre resigned to a quiet edge of the courtyard, to the left of the main building. The lights are on inside; Mr Yang and Ms Himeko are inside, working tirelessly, no doubt. Kids and counselors have been in and out, visiting Nurse Natasha for band-aids and ice packs and asthma pumps. Your group is arranged in a circle of log stools around an unlit fire pit. Itās the only part of the campground unalive.Ā
Sunday is busy reviewing their reflections, humming to himself as he jots notes on a sticky note. The kids sit, twiddling their thumbs as they listen to Stelle drone on, telling her third ghost story of the night. Even youāre getting tired of listening to her spooky voice. Youāre checking your watch, sighing as you see only ten minutes remain. At least Saturdays are your off days. Ms Himeko takes over, and the counselors can do fuck all.Ā
āOkay, Iāll make this one quick. Seems like Iām losing you guys,ā Stelle says, crossing her legs.
Sunday shakes his head, sparing her a glance. āI think what youāre losing is a sense of what this is supposed to be. Youāre not supposed to be entertaining them.ā
āTheyāre just kids. Donāt you think itās cruel to have them sitting here, watching their friends have fun?ā Stelle argues. Some of the kids start to murmur in agreement. They seem more entertained by the thought of the pair arguing than they ever were in the ghost stories. āBesides, Iām telling scary stories. Theyāre getting scaredāarenāt you scared, guys?ā The campers shrug, some bold enough to deny her claim. āWhat better way to teach them how to be better than through fear?ā
āThatās besides the point,ā Sunday refutes, shaking his head. āInstead of scaring them, you should beāā
āOh my God, will you two just stop already?ā You groan, throwing your head back. āI mean, just let her finish the story. They donāt even care. Whatās the harm?ā
Sunday clicks his tongue, shaking his head. You give him a grimace as you look him up and down. All pompous and proper, he is; heās the type of kid you wouldāve crucified when you were younger.
āAnyway, now that Sunday wasted our time, Iām gonna have to condense this even more.ā Stelle reaches behind a pair of campers, plucking Sundayās nape. He flinches and hisses, and she sticks her tongue out at him. āThereās an old urban legend about this place, about a guy called The Hunter.ā And then she looks at you, nudging a shoulder in your direction, āYāknow what Iām talking about, right?ā
āIāve never heard of it.ā You shrug. āYāsure youāre not making it up?ā
āAm not!ā She defends. Then she turns her attention back to the kids, deepening her voice. āParadise Valley is built on the grounds of what used to be a military base. Like, way, way back in the dayāIām talking ancient times.ā
āLike, when your mom was born?ā A camper snickers.Ā
A few of the others tumble into laughter. You let a few chuckles fly.
āNo. Jerks. How old do you even think I am?ā
āDunno. Forty?ā
āI do notāā
āFor goodness sake, get back to the story!ā
āRight. Anyway, there was this dude who worked at the base. He was a craftsman, a blacksmith; he forged weapons for the militia. All types of swords, spears; really good, one-of-a-kind work. And, well, he made the fatal mistake of falling in love. With a kept woman!ā Stelle gasped and put her hands on her cheeks in faux-shock, looking around the group for reactions. No one played into it, so she cleared her throat and continued, āHe was super in love with her. He started writing her poetry, crafting her gifts. One day, she came by, and he gifted her a blade. He said it was so she could protect herself when he couldnāt.ā
āAnd, so what? Her man found out?ā You ask.
Stelle smirks. āHer man found out, and, oh, he was livid. I mean, some random blacksmith is putting the moves on your woman behind your back, so what do you do? You confront him, of course; but The Hunter didnāt appreciate being pressed over who he thought was his woman. You see, he loved her a lot, he was basically obsessed with her. Heād do anything for her, to have her as his. And so, he killed her husband. Right there,ā she points to the main building, āright on these grounds.ā
Your eyes drift to the side of the building. You swallow thickly because thereās someone there. Someone faintly outlined in the shadows, someone who you feel is watching you. You donāt try to squint; you try to scoot to where Stelle will block your visage. And you shake your head, returning your attention to her story.
āThe husband also happened to be the general, so, when the rest of the military found out, all Hell broke loose. They dragged The Hunter down to the lake, by the loversā rock, and sentenced him to death.ā
āWhy do they call him The Hunter, then?ā You ask, nervously chewing on your lip. You donāt know why, but something about the story is unsettling.Ā
āāCause, they say he stalks the woods, the lake, specifically, looking for revenge. Once he sets his eyes on a pretty, taken woman, heāll stop at nothing ātil he gets to have her. Heāll hunt her down and take down every obstacle in the way he failed to before.ā Stelle says, her voice especially dark, but her eyes bright. You swallow thickly. Her smile grows, āAnd thatās why, kids, donāt sneak out to lovers rock! āCause then, youāll catch the unfortunate attention of The Hunter, and thenāā
DING DING, DONG DONG. āGood evening, Paradise Valley; itās nine PM, the Friday night fun is officially coming to an end,ā Ms Himekoās voice rang out all over the acreage. All of the participating children erupted into a chorus of groans. She chuckled as she continued, āCampers, please return to your cabins for the night. Remember, tomorrow is community outreach day. I hope to see those beautiful smiles, eager and excited to make a change in attitude and the community.ā
The outdoor lamps flickered on and bright; one by one, the electric lanterns on the cabins lit, signaling the passing time for the campers. In droves, the campers started to trek to their cabins. Supervising counselors ushered them, cleaned up after them, while you and Stelle stretched your legs, yawning in succession.Ā
Sunday pressed his lips together, slotting the papers neatly together before rising to his feet. āIām gonna take these to Ms Himeko,ā he announces, and then he turns to the children. They awkwardly follow his lead, rising to their feet. He gives them a small smile, āCāmon guys, Iāll escort you to your cabins.ā
They took off, Sunday in the lead. At their leave, March strolled over with Caelus, each of them towing a grin.Ā
āHey, loserās club. Long time, no see,ā Caelus greeted, earning a punch to the shoulder from his sister.Ā
āYouāre such a dick, sometimes,ā Stelle replied. Her brother stuck his tongue out at her, but she just rolled her eyes. āItās not that bad over here. I got to scare those little punks with a bunchāa ghost stories.ā
āThey werenāt scared.ā
āYou were, though,ā
You flip her off, rolling your eyes. Itās not that you were scared because of the storyāit was it in combination with whoever you saw at the side of the main building. And the darkness that lurks around the edges of the camp, and the eyes that you swear live inside of it. Youāre creeped out more than anything.
But now that sheās reminded you of it, you find yourself losing place in the conversation and staring at the side of the building again. Now that itās illuminated, only temporarily, you may find an answer.Ā
And you were right: he was there. You feel like youāve seen this man before; like his long, dark hair, and tall, lean frame linger in faint memories. Itās a gnarled familiarity. The feeling doesnāt make you feel good. If anything, you feel a bit more scared. Your breath is caged in your chest, trapped by an airless gasp.
Heās lit a cigarette. The smoke curls into a miniature cloud before drifting into the air. The bonfire still rages on in the center of the courtyard, but you swear, you can smell the nicotine, specifically, and feel the faint chill of the menthol. He looks at you; you instantly run cold.
His eyes are sharp and bright. It feels like when a lion has found its prey, burying itself in the weeds before pouncing. He takes another dragā a slow, long inhale that for some indescribable reason, you find yourself mimicking.
A long, deep breath in; hold it, let the air sit on your chest; release it, and watch your thoughts dance away. Heās still watching you through the smoke. You can feel it.
And you jump, because when you open your eyes from a slow blink, March is nose-tip-to-nose-tip with you, calling your name. āHey, whereād you go?ā She sings, concern gleaming in her blue eyes. āYou like, completely zoned out. Iāve never seen someone do that before; it was so freaky!ā
You take a step back from her. Youāre breathing semi-normally. Nodding, you force a reassuring smile, āIām tired. As fuck. And, not gonna lie, Stelleās story did creep me out a little.ā Now, youāre rubbing your bicep sheepishly. You ignore her shit-eating grin. āI mean, fuck, weāre in the middle of the woods. Itās totally reasonable Iām scared.ā
āIt is,ā March drawls, pouting. She pinches Stelle on the arm and the latter hisses, then whines. āIād be scared too. Donāt let her tease you for being real!ā
āDude, whatever. That wasnāt even the scariest story I told.ā
āWhich one was it?ā
āThe alleged urban legend about some guy called The Hunter,ā you answer before she can. Your eyes flicker behind her, and the guy was gone. You swear, your heart stops for a second. āHe killed the husband of the woman he was obsessed with, then was brought to justice by his colleagues. Now he allegedly stalks the woods and, what was it? Murders people out at lovers rock?ā
āHe murders the guys at lovers rock, ācause heās trying to secure the love of his life.ā Stelle corrects.
March looks horrified. She steps closer to you again, almost cowering against you. āGoodness! Thatās sickāand you told this to the campers?!ā
āYes, she did.ā Sunday says, taking Marchās place beside Stelle. Caelus takes the time to try and dap him up, but Sunday just gives him a tight smile and a small shake. āIām not dealing with crying campers at three AM. Iāve had enough.ā
āNeither am I.ā Stelle shrugs.
You, March, and Caelus all share quick glances. Then, in a quick second, youāre all touching the tip of your index to your nose, yelling out āNot it!ā in unison.
āI said it first!ā March squeals, immediately pointing accusatory fingers at you two.
Sunday rolls his eyes.
āNo, you didnāt!ā Caelus argues back. āYou didnāt move until you saw me move.ā
āDonāt lie,ā you interject, eyes narrowing at Caelus. They split for a second to look in the distance; nothing. āYou both looked at me first. I literally watched you look at each other before I said, first, ānot itā!ā
āYouāre a bold face liar!ā
āWhat the hell are you talking about?!ā
āGuys, guys, guys,ā Stelle projects over you all. She leans in closer, āI have a solution: we just make Dan Heng do it.ā
Her smile is cheshire. A similar one pulls at Caelusās lips; March gives an upside down smile, nodding as she visibly mulls it over. Youāre paused, feeling a bit embarrassed at how your lips instantly twitched at the mention of his name.
āYouāre so smart, sis,ā Caelus compliments, holding up his fist.Ā
The lights around flicker out. Only the bonfire and the moon remain alive. All campers are in their cabins and accounted for. Youāre officially off the clock.
āDan Hengāll totally do it, too!ā March chimes in, clapping her hands excitedly. āHeās such aāā
āIām gonna do what?ā
He appears out of nowhere, so close to you, just right behind March. She yips like a puppy. You jump back, gasping slightly. You didnāt even see him coming; when did he get here?
The bonfire roars, inflating with a bright glow. Some counselors have thrown it more logs.
āYou scared the shit out of me!ā Stelle exclaims.
āDid you think he was The Hunter?ā Sunday teases.
You can slightly see her flip him offā sheās just barely swallowed by the encroaching shadows. The orange light beams against the backside of him; you can see the creases whatever expression he sends back faintly.
āSampo smuggled in a case of beer, Servalās got a radio, a few others are getting more snacks. A counselorās bonfire,ā Dan Heng begins, not waiting for a response, or dignifying the drama. āAre you guys joining?ā
āOMG, yes!ā March chirps. And then sheās bouncing up and down; then, wrapping an arm around your neck, pulling you as she then envelopes Sunday. Sheās jumping excitedly between you two, āItās you guysā first year at Paradise Valley! You get to experience Paradise After Dark for the first time!ā
āParadise After Dark?ā Sunday parrots confusedly.
āWhen the counselors are off the clock on a Friday, they get to have their fun.ā You answer before anyone else can. āWhen I was a camper here, we used to be able to hear them laughing and playing around ātil, like, one AM. Sneaking down to the lake, to lovers rock, playing hide ān seek and shit.ā
āHimeko is a little bit stricter on us,ā Dan Heng replies. Your attention jumps to the main building again. Itās face is a warm orange; the sides and back fall into a swallowing shadow. āSheās all for us having fun, but safetyās first.ā
Caelus looks over his shoulder, tucking his hands in his pockets. āIf anyoneās sneaking out and around, the stealth has to be on one-hundred. Sheās up super late with all that coffee she drinks, and sheās upped the security since the campers have gotten bold in the last few years.ā
March releases you and Sunday, turning on her heels. She takes a few steps forward, out of your circle. You roll your shoulders, stepping behind March. Dan Heng gives way to you, his presence ghosting against you.Ā
The two of you exchange brief eye contact.
āHereās hoping no one disappears by the creek this year!ā Stelle exclaims. You can just tell sheās winking at you.
March announces to the group that sheās going to make s'mores, but you drift into Dan Heng. He feels a bit closer all of a sudden; thereās a bit of a breeze that ebbs against you. He, or the environment, smells like freshness: like the earth, with a twinge of perspiration, and a distant layer of cinder. You instantly notice the heat around youā youāre radiating it.
You give him a half-smile, averting your gaze forward, into the fire. āDid that actually happen?ā You ask. Youāre half-actually-curious.
He tilts his head toward you slightly, āOnly once, last summer. It was March; we were playing a big game of hide and seek, and she got turned around in the woods. We didnāt find her until the next morning, almost to the next camp all the way down there.ā
āGoddamn!ā You exclaim, falling into a bit of snickers. Paradise Valley is in the complete ass of the woodsā the next camp is almost forty minutes away by car. āHow long was she walking for?? How could she not tell she was going the wrong way?ā
āIt all looks the same,ā Dan Heng replies, shaking his head and softly laughing. āYouāve seen how dark it gets out here, so I donāt blame her. But sometimes, I think about why she didnāt just stay put. She mightāve been scared, but we were right there; we wouldāve found her.ā
You look at Dan Heng again. The light of the flames only reaches so far behind him. The surrounding area of the camp is swallowed by trees, by vast blackness.Ā
You swallow, licking over your dry lips. āMaybe something scared her. She was trying to get away, trying to get back, and got mixed up that way.ā
Dan Heng shrugs unassuredly. He begins walking, slowly, like heās waiting for you to follow. You do, picking up beside him in a slow crawl behind your friends. Your arms are brushing each other as you walk. You pull your eyes slowly to his.
āMaybe it was The Hunter.ā You sneer.
He gives you a small chuckle. āMaybe it was. ā¦Who knows.ā
āI know. Ghosts arenāt real.ā
Heās laughing again, this time a little harder, genuinely, with his whole chest. Itās a sweet sound, one that you find yourself wanting to hear again.
You give him a little shove, but pull yourself behind his short shuffle forward. Youāre slightly touching him again. āYou believe in ghosts?ā
āI believe in energy, yes,ā he shrugs. His eyes are golden by the fire. āMemories are what keep the past alive; theyāre full of emotions, of feelings. A place or an experience can make you feel something. People are incubators for feelings. Our love, hate, regret⦠they never die.ā
Your eyes drift to the trees.Ā
Theyāre so thick, so old, so full of life. You wonder how many memories they hold, how much love, hate, and regret buzzes inside them. Maybe thatās what The Hunter isāan amalgamation of feelings, of a life, or so many, once lived and burned into the world. And maybe thatās what the creeping feeling is: itās the lingering breaths running along your skin, awareness of the life once present.Ā
In a way, it becomes a little more breathable. You inhale slowly, pleasantly, and you feel a relaxation buzz softly within your bones.
āThatās beautiful,ā you say, eyes still latched onto the woods. āIāve never thought about it that way.ā
āIsnāt that the best thing about meeting new people?ā Now, heās looking at you. Thereās a fondness over his expression, a softness that makes you feel girlish. You start to nibble on your lip. āYou get to learn something new.ā
āYeah,ā you nod.Ā
Serval has perched on a log stool and strums a deafening chord on the guitar. You recognize it as the old acoustic one from the recreation room. Itās a bit out of tune; Servalās fingers are quick to tweak before she tries again. This time, a much more melodious sound flows out, and the quiet that overtakes your bunch is less judgemental.
You and Dan Heng find seats at the bonfire beside Sunday and Caelus, respectively. March is on the right side of Sunday, beside Stelle, holding two sticks of marshmallows over the fire. Her tongue sits readily between her lips.
Sampo emerges from the dark abyss of the dining hall with Luka and Evanescia following; the former happily lugs a wide case of beers, while the latter two wheel out a wooden keg. You begin to wonder where they hid all of this stuff.
āA keg? Seriously? What the hell is going on here?ā You laugh out.
āSampoās always got a trick up his sleeve,ā Caelus answers. Stelle and March are rolling their eyes.
āIndeed I do!ā Sampo chirps, wrapping his arms around the twins. Beer bottles are slotted between his fingers; they clink sharply with his movements. His grin is wide as he continues, āItās what keeps the fun alive! The campers arenāt the only ones who get to enjoy themselves.ā
You look over to the keg again. Serval is already being handed a cup. She sniffs the mystery liquid, sloshes it around in her cup, and takes a small sip. Luka is teasing her. You look back to Sampo inquisitively. āWhatās in it?ā
His grin grows impossibly wider. āWant a cup?ā He asks. āItāll cost yaā.ā
āI wouldnāt, if I were you,ā Stelle warns. Sheās smashing the toasted marshmallow between two graham crackers. March is licking her lips as she watches.
āWhy not?ā You ask, half laughing.
Caelus takes the beer from Sampo, tossing the cap over his shoulder. He takes a quick sip. āAll types of hell live at the bottom of that keg.ā
āYouāll be fucked up from tonight ātil Tuesday morning. Iām telling you, itās not worth it.ā Stelle adds.
You look at Dan Heng in total disbelief. He gives you a confirming nod. Sampo is still laughing. You whip your head back to him. āSeriously, what the hell is in it?ā
āA little bit of everything,ā he winks, pulling from around the twins and walking behind you. He hands Sunday and Dan Heng beers, offering you the final one. You decline, feeling a bit apprehensive. āItās really not that bad. These guys are biased, so donāt listen to them. You have to experience it for yourself.ā
āIāll pass, for now.ā You give him a small reassuring smile.Ā
Stelle is sticking her tongue out at him before taking a bite of her perfect sāmore. March has finally assembled her own, and before she can do anything but admire it, Sampo is swiftly stealing it from her, taking a generous bite.
āWhat the hell?!ā She squeals, immediately standing up. Sampo shoves the rest of the treat in his mouth, smiling cheshirely as he slowly backs away. āWhy would you do that?!! If you asked, I wouldāve made you one!ā
āIt wouldnāt have been as good,ā Sampo replies, words slurred through the food.Ā
āSeriously, fuck off, Sampo!ā The twins exclaim in unison.Ā
You hear Serval laughing in the distance. A few other counselors watch in delight as March swats at Sampo, and he scurries off.
And just like that, the first counselorās night of freedom begins.
An hour, maybe two, pass quickly. Serval has been strumming and singing for a while, and thereās a small group thatās collected around her, some feeding her drinks until her words blur together. Some counselors have resigned to the rec room; others have taken to running around the campus, playing and sneaking around carelessly. March had taken Stelle with her to the rec room to retrieve some games and returned with a vape.
Your small group had decided to resolve your boredom with chatter, which then evolved into an endless game of would you rather.Ā
March has nestled herself between your legs, blowing strawberry ice clouds carefully away from the fire. Your hands card through her candied strands, folding them neatly over one another into braids.Ā
Dan Heng sits beside you, a bit closer, nursing a second beer from Sampoās stash. Sunday is still in place, still as quiet as a mouse, observing the main building more than enjoying the moment. Stelle is crushing another sāmore, clapping her hands together.
āOkay! I have a good one!ā She says, shoving the rest of the snack in her mouth. āWould you ratherā¦ā
The lights inside the main building have turned off. You donāt know what time it is, but itās quite early. Ms Himeko has turned in earlier than you would have thought.
And you donāt know when it happened. Or when the door opened, and that guy from earlier came outside. He didnāt choose to sit on the chairs on the porch, but rather on the porchās steps. Heās hidden just barely behind Stelle. And he poses indifference: a book is nestled between his fingers, but he doesnāt flip the pages. He doesnāt even look at it. Heās looking at you. And you donāt know how long itās been happening.
Now that youāve noticed it, youāre failing to look away.Ā
Even when March taps your knee, offering you a hit of the vape, and Stelle is singing your name annoyingly. You snap back to attention and accept the offer, letting a hand stagnate on top of Marchās head.
āWhy do you keep zoning out like that?ā March asks.
āRight. You didnāt hear my question at all?ā
You shake your head, taking a deep inhale of the vape. Stelle gives a dramatic sigh, āDude, youāre seriously the worst.ā
āThat guy has been staring at me all night,ā you say, slightly nodding your head in his direction. āDonāt make it obvious.ā You add as Stelle, Caelus, and Sunday turn to look. Youāre taking another hit, āWho even is that?ā
After they look away, heās burying himself in the book. You narrow your eyes a bit.
āThatās Blade,ā Dan Heng answers, āI..actually donāt know his real name, now that I think about it.ā
āNobody does. Thatās just what we call him.ā Caelus shrugs.
āHeās one of the janitors,ā March adds.
āWe have janitors?ā Sunday asks, finally breaking his silence. His confusion is loud, and immediately parroted by your expression. āWhy in the world do we get put on cleaning duty, then?!ā
Stelle shrugs, āHeās one of four. There was something about Mr Yang having to cut costs to afford some of the updates around campus. New therapists and security arenāt cheap.ā
āI literally didnāt even know he existed until I caught him staring at me earlier. The fuckā¦āĀ
You run a bit cold. Something about it is making you uneasyāyou feel naked in some ways, exposed. Who knows how long heās been watching you, truly, or what he sees when he looks at you.Ā
Itās in your nature to think the worst. You shake your head, trying to physically dispel the thoughts. You might just be in your head too much. Maybe.
āMaybe he likes you~ā March teases, tickling her fingers against your ankles.
You kick her in the side. āShut up.ā
āSeriously, he might,ā Stelle adds. āI mean, I wouldnāt know. Heās not a man of many words. Maybe heāll open up to you.ā
āI hate you both,ā you nip, rolling your eyes. āI am not talking to him. Never gonna happen.ā
āDo you want me to?ā Dan Heng asks you. And heās speaking directly to you: his head is turned fully, his voice is soft, almost like itās just for your ears.Ā
Your eyes flicker to behind Stelle again, to the empty front porch. That quickly, heās disappeared. Again. Almost like he was never there to begin with. That coldness runs through you again.
Smiling at Dan Heng, youāre shaking your head again, resetting your mind.Ā
āWhy do you guys call him Blade?ā You ask. It comes out before you think about it, before you ask yourself why you even care.
The group all shrug. You take another hit in an attempt to truly clear your mind. It doesnāt really work.
āItās kinda all he talks about, when he does speak. Think itās something that just stuck,ā Stelle answers. She makes grabby hands for the vape, and you oblige her: passing it to Caelus, who passes it to his sister.
āI think it has something to do with his job before this.ā He adds.
The thought that immediately comes to your mind makes you laugh. āWhat was it? Blacksmithing?ā
Nobody else really laughs.Ā
āI actually think it was,ā Dan Heng answers. For the first time in a while, he sips his beer. āOr something like it.ā
āI thought he was ex-military?ā March asks, turning her head. Her half-done braid almost instantly unravels.
They all shrug again. āI said something like it,ā Dan Heng replies, taking another sip. āI donāt know. Iāve, personally, never really talked to the guy.ā
āYouāre saying that like he talks to anyone,ā Stelle says through the smoke.
āWho knows,ā Caelus shrugs. He leans a little closer to the bonfire, warming his hands. āMaybe the other janitors know.ā
āWho are they? Where are they?ā You ask.
He pauses, then shrugs. āWho knows.ā He repeats.Ā
Who knows. That seems to be the only thing resonating in your head.
ā-----
On Saturdays, the counselors have the day off. Ms Himeko takes the therapistsāMs Yao, Ms Jade, Mr Anaxa, and Ms Aglaeaāthe campers, and Nurse Natasha into the city, showing them that thereās more to life than delinquency through community outreach activities. Mr Yang stays behind, still working like thereās no tomorrow. You all just rest up; Friday has drained you heavily. Itās a day that passes with slow monotony.
Jiaoqiu had a great spread ready for breakfast: assorted fruit skewers, pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, the whole ensemble. When you all had stumbled into the mess hall in droves, he greeted you with a grin.
You asked him, āIsnāt it technically your day off, too? Whyāre you cooking for us?ā
āItās my pleasure,ā he shrugged. āFood heals people. We could all use a little pick-me-upāwe work with kids. Something has to keep us steady.ā
He handed you an extra fruit skewer with a wink, and you accepted it politely. March and the others had grabbed a table by the front entrance, where the windows let the sun beam right in, and the doors held the angry heat at bay.
Breakfast was calm. You laughed, you talked. You swore out of the corner of your eyes that youād seen Blade. Again, by the window, there one minute, and gone the next. Itās not strange for a janitor to linger aroundāit is his job. Thatās what March told you. Sheād also told you that sugar as a pancake topping is normal, so you donāt feel inclined to have faith in her.
The day carried on steadily. A few naps here and there made the time pass faster; the next thing you knew, Stelle was drawing on your face, waking you up with an incessant chorus of giggles.Ā
She held her hands up in defense as you launched at her. She dodged, and you tumbled onto the floor unceremoniously. March and Caelus couldnāt keep it together. The former was quick to snap pictures through her laughter. They were blurry from movement, but they captured your defeated pose, your noticing of March taking pictures, and your attempts to grab her.
They used eyeliner to decorate your face with a moustache, freckles, and horrid doodles. After three washes, your face was clean. Coming out of the bathroom, you ran into Dan Heng. He spooked you; he gave you an apologetic smile and a steadying hand on your bicep.
āWeāre having a movie night at the amphitheatre. Mr Yangās setting it up for us nowā¦ā he trailed off, like he was looking for the words to say. His eyes jumped all over your face. Then he inhaled and averted his gaze to his shoes. āI was wondering if you wanted to join meā¦ā
The smile that pulled at your lips was uncontrollable and girlish. āYeah, of course. ā¦Are the others coming?ā
āYes, but I⦠I would like to get to know you..separate from the others.ā His cheeks were flushing the softest pink, like newborn peonies. You tried to stifle your own fluster with a flattened smile, but you were unsuccessful. He exhaled deeply, possibly in relief, and continued, āI donāt think Iāve gotten to know you for you, yet. I think we would get along great.ā
āI think we would, too.ā Your smile was uncontainable. It was infectious; Dan Heng was grinning unabashedly.Ā
Heād taken you to the eastern amphitheatre. Itās further in the woods, at the back of the campus. The only other things back there are a row of sheds: two of them are used as makeshift classrooms, and the other three are filled with supplies. Itās a three-minute walk to the amphitheatre from the counselorās cabins, but when you get back there, it feels like a different plane.
Itās placed a few feet from the cliff's edge, right at the end of the campusā property. The seating is carved out in cement and lined with grass. Assorted blankets cover the verdant blades. Lanterns fill the space between the seats and the stageāthe latter of which is adorned with a projector screen.
Heads have already started to populate the area. You spot March, the twins, and Sunday getting seated near the front right. You and Dan Heng sit a few rows back, shifted more toward the middle.Ā
Mr Yang had used a podium to hold the projector. He had tons of movies, he told you all, āLots from my childhood. ā¦Donāt make that face; theyāre not in black and white. Theyāre quite good, if I may say so myself.ā
You donāt remember the name of the first one, or any of the ones after that; you were too engrossed in conversation with Dan Heng.Ā
It was a quiet, whispery conversation that had you two pushed together. Lips to one anotherās ear, cheek-to-cheek, arm-to-arm. It started slow, a bit hesitant, but soon, the layer of awkwardness melted between you, and you were close. You were smelling him again: the soft, soapy fragrance, the gentle, woody cologne, the twinge of sweat. He smelled like the woods: a familiar but distant scent, the smell of memories.
It carried on into your dreams. That night, you dreamed of Dan Heng being with you in a moonlit clearing in the middle of the woods. The sky was full of stars, and many of them were shooting across the night. Bright drag paths were shaped like the doodles Stelle had left on your face. He was pointing them out like they were constellations, with reverence like they were born of you.Ā
And then he held you, hands on your arms, with his eyes locked in on yours. He leaned closer to you, his breath against your lips. Lingering for a moment, letting you feel his warmth. And then he kissed you. You felt the stars in your mouthāthe heat, the passion.
When he finally pulled away, his face was drained of color. His lips burst apart and a gurgle wracked from the back of his throat; blood poured from his mouth like an unbound spigot, dripping all over you. You shrieked bloodcurdlingly and you tried to slip away, but he was holding you down on the ground, pinning you tightly in his growing pool of blood. You blinked dramatically, and when you opened your eyes, he was Blade.Ā
On Sunday, you woke up on the floor. Skin dewy with sweat, your face especially wet with tears.Ā
You looked up, and March was still sound asleep. It was gloomy through the window.
Sundays are when Mr Yang finally comes out of the main building. The campers get the morning to rest in, and then theyāre stuck in a lecture for two and a half hours. It allowed you to stay groggy until today.
Three cups of coffee and a secret vape break with March have given you enough gas to make it through your final group. Your session is focused on mindfulness and teaching the children regulation in conflict. After a short lesson comprised of notes from Ms Yao, you all have taken the children down to the lake. Rows of paddleboards, oars, and lifejackets await them. They burst into a chorus of excited yelling, all rushing to stake their claim. You, Tingyun, and March share knowing looks: disaster is upon you.
Tingyun whistles, silencing the bustle. āListen up, everyone!ā She chirped, āGroup yourselves into groups of six, please. Miss March is going to secure your life vests, but donāt get distracted! Stay here, in this moment with me.ā
March goes down the slight hill, taking to the first full group on the left. Their attention is amazingly still spared to you both.
āAlright guys; youāll all be sharing your paddleboards among your group, using collaboration and effective communication to reach that goal back there,ā Tingyun points straight over the water, where a floating green flag sits before the horizon. The camper's eyes follow, then fly right back when she snaps. āThe first group to get there and back wins a wonderful free pass to the rec room instead of a group.ā Now, the children are excited. You and Tingyun share another glance.
āHowever! You must exhibit good sportsmanship and collaboration with your team,ā you add. āThe pass also expires at the end of this week. Choose wiselyā¦ā
March has made her way through the groupāfour pods of sixāand she jumps excitedly into the air. You and Tingyun move, taking downhill and unhooking sets of oars for each group.
āAre you guys ready?!ā March exclaims. Each member of the groups is handed an oar. The paddleboards are already laid at the foot of the water. March directs the kids to them. āRemember: your goal is to have fun and compassion!ā
āAnd to win!ā You add. March sends you a playful glare.
āYes, but know that the real winners in life are the people who can make peace with loss,ā Tingyun says. Her words sit on your chest. āSo, no matter the results, donāt beat yourself up, and donāt persecute others.ā
The kids line up on the paddleboards. They buzz with excitement. You, March, and Tingyun crouch behind the first three groups, pushing them fully into the water. March moves quickly to the fourth, matching them to their peers.
You pull the stopwatch out of your pocket.Ā
āOkay; on your marks!ā Tingyun leads, āGet readyā¦ā
āGet setā¦ā March picks up.
āGo!!ā You exclaim, hitting the start button.
The children start rowing uncoordinatedly. Theyāre all focusing on being the fastest, on getting ahead, that theyāre negating communication and strategy. Itās funny to watch. They wobble on the boards, even as they hardly take off anywhere. The natural current pulls them forward more than their efforts do.
March facepalms. āI think theyāre missing the essence of the activityā¦ā
āLet them have their fun,ā you reply, looking at them with a heap of fondness. āTheyāll find their way sooner or later.ā
āAs long as theyāre not mean to each other or fighting, we have a win on our hands, ladies.ā Tingyun sends you both a grin.Ā
Suddenly, a loud splash is heard. A chorus of laughter and teasing snides ring out; the second group has flipped their board over. Little legs stick up out of the water. Their hands flail as they try to get back up.
Group three is in the lead. They seem to have found harmony. Your grin is proud and uncontainable.
āYou got this, you guys!ā You yell out.Ā
āAw, look at you, encouraging them,ā March teases, elbowing you in your side. āIt was just four days ago that you barely wanted to talk to them.ā
You roll your eyes, shoving her lightly. āTheyāve softened me up a little. What can I say?ā
āWas it them, or a special someoneā¦?ā Tingyun raises her eyebrows at you. Your lips roll inward and you look back out into the lake. Group three has made it to the flag, with group one close behind them. Two is still struggling to stay steady and afloat, and four is making slow progress.
āDonāt avoid the question!ā March jumps in your face.
You take a step back from her, crossing your arms and avoiding her face. You wonāt be able to keep it together if you look at her. āI donāt know what youāre talking about.ā
āBullshit!ā
āWe saw you and Dan Heng at movie night. You guys looked quite closeā¦ā
āYeah! And he kicked the twins and me out so he could personally invite you.ā March says, wiggling a finger in your face. āYou both get all cheesy and flustered when you see each other. Whatās up with that??ā
You shrug, āNothing. Weāre just friendsāI barely even know him!ā
āYeah, but you want to get to know him more, donāt you?ā Tingyunās voice is teasingly sultry. March is giggling. Youāre fighting the urge to feed into her.
āI bet you want to know what he feels like, what he sounds like, what he tastesāā
āOh my god! There are kids around!ā
āIs that why you wonāt make a move? You donāt want to corrupt them?ā
āIām trying to be professional.ā You defend, finally looking March in the eyes. You know your expression is unconvincing by the way sheās trying not to laugh in your face. āWe have jobs to do.ā
āThis is a summer camp. Having fun is literally in the job description.ā Tingyun argues.
āIām not having this conversation right now.ā
āSo later? During dinner?ā The brunette asks.Ā
You give her a tempered glare. āIām off duty after this, so no.ā
āSo weāll talk about it before lights out then! Itās decided!ā March chirps. She gives you a wink. āListen, I think you should give him a chance. Dannieās a good guy. And he clearly is interested in you, soā¦ā
Your brows involuntarily quirk at that. March and Tingyun catch it and immediately burst into laughter; you hide your face in your palms.
Thereās another large splash of water. The three of you immediately whip your attention to the water. Miraculously, group two has made it to shore.
Group three has toppled over on their way back. Group one and four are neck-and-neck for second place.
āOh! Oh! I got it!ā You hit the lap button. āA minute and fifty-four seconds! Good job, guys!!ā
March and Tingyun rush to greet them with high-fives. Youāre still watching the water: by a hair, group one beats group four. You hit the lap button again. In their second of triumph, they tip over and dump into the water, splashing their peers and your friends. You start bellowing out laughter.Ā
The fourth group has made it onto land safely. You lap it again.Ā
As the kids start to ramble about the experience to March and Tingyun, stripping their gear, you watch the final group struggle to make it. By the time they hit the shore, their little legs have given out and theyāre doubling over, sliding into the wet mud.
Immediately, the self-appointed leader of the group, Yunli, jumps up, pointing an accusatory finger at another kid, Yanqing. Since day one, these two have been going at it. Theyāre a strange case of frenemies.
āThis is all your fault! Your strategy suckedānow, weāre big fat losers!!ā She stands over Yanqing.
You instantly rush over.
āOur failure was a group effort!ā Yanqing argues back. āDonāt just blame me!ā
āWhy should I listen to you?! You werenāt right the first time, so what makes it different this time?!ā
āStop trying to fight me, Yunliāā
āOr what?ā
āOkay, okay, none of that, guys.ā You approach with your hands defensively flexed, your tone soft. Yunli has no problem with demanding respect and you have no desire to fight her bite. āRemember what we talked about before? Processing the emotion inside before letting it out? Itās okay to be disappointed, but itās not okay to project that onto others.ā
āDonāt talk down to me like Iām a little kid!ā
āYou are a kid, stupid!ā Yanqing quips. He pulls himself up, and Yunli takes the opportunity to get in his face.Ā
āIf Iām stupid, what are you?ā She asks, her chest puffed out.
āNo, guysāā
āBetter than you! I could never be as stupid as you. Yunli the DummyāYunli the big, mad, ugly dummy!ā
āYanqingāā
āShut up!ā Yunli shoves Yanqing; he stumbles backwards, impressively staying afoot in the mud. But that steadiness leads him to stomp right back, and you futily try to keep him at bay.
You look over your shoulder for a brief second, looking for support, and find March consoling a sobbing sore loser, and Tingyun helping a kid stuck in their lifejacket. It would be you, the least experienced of your trio, to have to deal with a quickly escalating conflict.
If you had it your way, youād let them fight. When you were a camper, you hated when the counselors would get involved and break up your fightsāsometimes itās necessary to enact revenge and let it all out, lest it festers and you have to repeat the conflict again and again and again. But youāre getting paid to be a referee, so you have to intervene before it gets out of hand.Ā
You wedge yourself between the bickering children. Theyāre slinging insults back and forth and your protests and reminders fall on deaf ears. The best you can do is keep them from knocking each other out, which isnāt that great.
The ground is soft and wet, and Yunli is trying her hardest to break past you and choke Yanqing out. Sheās strongāunnecessarily so for a young girl.Ā
Yanqing swats at her under your defensive arms, and she instantly reacts, lunging forward with a deep heave. Her sheer power is that of a bull: sheās ignited and blows right through you, sending you unceremoniously to the ground. You make a hard splat into the mud before slowly sliding toward the water.Ā
Everyone stops and looks at you, hissing and wincing at your fall. Youāre hot with embarrassment.
You try to pull yourself up but you keep slipping in the mud, falling further and further down with each attempt. Yunli snickers at you; Yanqing joins in. At least you got them to stop fightingā¦
Tingyun and March finally see your struggle and rush over, and all twenty-four campers watch them pull you up, muddied and sopping, in a humiliating silence.
DING DING, DONG DONG.Ā
The intercom crackles. āGood evening, Paradise Valley. Itās 6:20 PM; Counselors, please wrap up your groups and escort the campers to the dining hall. Dinner will begin usually and promptly at 6:30. Tonightās menu is garlic shrimp and broccoli skewers, meatballs, fried rice, and assorted vegetables, and cucumber noodle salad. Eat well, and fuel up for another great day!ā
You, March, and Tingyun share looks as the children cheer and clap.
āWhat in the world happened over here?ā Tingyun questions.
You narrow your gaze at Yunli and Yanqing. āThose two,ā you say, nodding your head at them. āBickering and fighting. Iām no snitch, but they got me covered in mud and worms and shit, so Iām writing their little asses up. No Friday night bonfire for them!ā
March laughs; Tingyun scoffs, āNow, being vindictive is no way to deal with your frustration.ā
āOh, shut the hell up.ā
ā-----Ā
The mud is stubborn to rinse off your skin. Waves of light brown water crash in the tub, slowly pouring down the drain. Sediment has begun to ring itself around. You just stand under the water, rubbing your hands along your skin, trying to clear yourself before a rag touches you.Ā
The water is a nice lukewarm: warm enough to make you feel clean, cool enough to mend hours under the scorching sun. It feels good to just let it rain against you. Youāve found yourself just relishing the feeling latelyāthe caress of it, the cleanliness it tows.Ā
You turn around to let the water run down your back. Itās relatively clean, but it suffered most of the sunās ire. You gasp softly when it catches the rain. Itās almost a moan. Itās pleasurable.
Your eyes flutter shut as you stand there. The water pressure isnāt the best, but it hugs you well.Ā
Fatigue is beginning to overcome you. It doesnāt help that you didnāt turn the lights on, deciding to let the sinking sun illuminate the bathroom.Ā
Itās a dim orange in the room. The shower curtain keeps the light at bay considerably; just bright enough so you can see yourself and the small tub, and the fuzzy outline on the other side.
The shadow catches your attention at the corner of your eye. The slight presence you feel, the goosebumps that push against your flesh, are unexpected. Youāre fraught to acknowledge it and you donāt understand why. Itās something buried deep inside you keeping you from giving inā
But you do. You turn and look and thereās a figure on the other side of the shower curtain. Seemingly frozen in motion. You canāt tell if theyāre facing the shower or not.
āMarch,ā you call out over the water, āI didnāt tell you you could come in! Stop barging in without knocking!ā
Youāre not sure if it's her, but it feels better to believe it is.Ā
Thereās no response.Ā
March lingers for a moment before wordlessly leaving. You breathe again when youāre alone.Ā
In a slow few minutes, filled with your soft humming to invigorate the dead air, youāre clean and exiting the shower. The bathroom smells like your soap. Condensation hangs in the air and sits on the mirror. You wipe it away to gaze at yourself in the streaks, to see how clean you look, how nice you appear. You never thought that thereād be a time you negated freedom and expression to be normalāthat youād become the daughter your father always wanted.
You flatten your lips as the realization settles into you. Heās not even here to see it, and yet, itās all for him.Ā
You turn and bend to grab your muddy clothes off the floor but pause in your tracks. The marks where they laid are still there, but they themselves are missing.
āWhat the fuck?ā You mutter aloud. You remember stripping in the bathroom and hopping right ināyou were going to rinse them off before going to the machine, so they should be right here, beside the toilet.Ā
But theyāre not. You can only think of one answer:
āMarch!ā You yell out, throwing the bathroom door open. āDid you take my clothes out of the bathroom?! Why did youā¦ā
The cabin is empty. It looks as it did when you came in: Marchās bunk is a hot mess of clothes, wrinkled sheets, and plushies, and yours is unmade but somewhat orderly. The windows are cracked. The fan is carrying air across the room. The door is closed.Ā
Your voice dies in your throat. Your body vibrates under a gust of chills down your back. Suddenly, youāre clutching the towel tighter to your body.
And then, the door is swinging open, with March singing your name. āYouāll never believeāoh, hey. Were you waiting for me?ā
Sheās holding a white clamshell plate in one hand, the doorknob in the other. Her cheery disposition melts into concern as she examines your demeanor. Quickly, sheās closing the door behind her, coming closer. āHey, whatās wrong?ā
āWere you in here? Did you come in the bathroom?āĀ
āNo, I just came back fromāā She cuts herself off, setting the food container on the dresser. Your eyes flicker to the dresser; a bunch of flowers are laid atop, crunched petals brushed around. You wonder where that came from⦠She comes even closer to you. āDid something happen?ā
You donāt know why you hesitate to tell her. March is silly; sheās been joking and pranking you since you met her a week ago, but this isnāt her style. It unnerves you to admit that.
You shake your head, āItās been a long day⦠Think ām just driving myself crazy.ā
You sit down on your bed. She pushes stuff out of her way and sits on hers across from you.
āWas it the shower snakes?ā
You shake your head again. āA personā¦I think.ā
āA person?! What the fuck?!ā She exclaims. āWe need to go tell Ms Himeko rightāā
āI said I think it was a person. All I saw was a shadow⦠And then, when I got out of the shower, my clothes were missing. But maybe I misplaced them, orāā
āNo fucking way. Where could they have gone?ā March asks, looking around the room theatrically.
You give her a humorless laugh. Sheās right, unfortunately. āI donāt know. I honestly donāt think I want to know.āĀ
āWell, I think we should tell Ms Himeko and Mr Yang.ā She shrugs. āThey can pull up the security tapes and find out who came in and out of the cabin, if anybody.ā
āNo way. Then everybodyāll see me sneaking around with Dan Heng after lights out.ā You joke.Ā
March gives you a dry, enunciated laugh. Then, she claps her hands together, āOh, wait! Speaking of Dan Hengā¦ā
ā-----Ā
Camp ends in three weeks. Youāve made it halfway through, and you havenāt lost your sense or your patience, so you reward yourself on the eve of the beginning of week four with Sampoās special juice.
Mr Yang confiscated the keg, so Sampo and Luka stole a few pitchers from the dining hall and made it work. They also took Mr Yangās Jeep and drove into town to buy some more liquor. Theyāll have to clean the pitchers a dozen times over with how much alcohol is in thereāone cup of lemonade from those things and the campers will be drunk beyond repair.Ā
This Saturday called for the rowdiness: youād all made it through the week without having to write up any campers. Even Yunli and Yanqing, whose ugly spat last week left them facing punishment for days, had managed to make it through the week on good behavior. And Ms Himeko had secured an overnight excursion to celebrate the kidsā efforts, so you were all left to your devices. Mr Yang catches up on some much-needed sleep, and you all indulge in the fledgling night.
Your group has sat around the bonfire once again; this time, much closer, because a few other counselors have squeezed in among you. Itās a colder night: the breeze is much more aggressive and keeps the temperature tolerable, the flame tempered. Most of the kindling was used yesterday for the kids, and youāre all much too gone to feed it. Nobodyās here for the fire, anywayāitās all about letting loose.
Your lips are stained purple. So are Marchās, and Caelusās, and nearly everyone's. Dan Heng and Sunday stay sober, and the latter is not pleased about his predicament.
He huffs, adjusting Marchās dead weight onto Stelleās shoulder. āI thought the whole point of Paradise After Dark is that weāre off the clockā¦so, why do I have to babysit you all?ā
āYādonāt,ā March slurs, āNobody's making you be a prude, Sunny!ā
āāM not a prudeā¦ā he mutters in reply, his lips pursed in a defiant pout. He crosses his arms over each other and turns away from March, whoās pressing teasing fingers to his cheek.
āYou might not be a prude, but you are wound up quite tight,ā Caelus adds with a shrug, taking the final swig of his drink.Ā
A few agreeing murmurs resound within the group. Sunday takes to sulking a bit more.
Dan Heng gives Sunday an encouraging pat on the shoulder, āIt doesnāt hurt to wind down a little bit. ā¦Iām actually going to grab a beer; want one?ā
Sunday receives Dan Hengās kindness with a flattened smile. āI guess. ā¦Sure. Thanks.ā
āNo problem.ā Dan Heng stands up. He turns to face the group, āIāll be right back. Anybody need anything?ā
A chorus of unintelligible requests comes his way; he only gives a small smile, one that says heāll figure it out. He takes one step out of the circle and stops because you grab his wrist.
āCan I come with you?ā You ask quietly. Then, you start to feel embarrassed because of how meek you must look and sound, how desperate. You clear your throat and straighten your posture. ā...I wanna sober up a little, thatās all. Think ām gonna call it a night soonā¦ā
āOf course. I donāt mind.ā He smiles reassuringly at you. He pulls his hand from your grip, moving to hold yours and help you to your feet.Ā
A few adoring coos are passed around the group. You try to tell yourself that itās the fire warming you so aggressively, but you know itās him. Everyone knows itās him; you two are not subtle in the slightest.Ā
You rise, holding Dan Heng a little tighter because your legs feel weak. Akin to a jellyingālike your legs are made out of cotton candy. Your head spins, your vision blurs. The effects of the drink hadnāt hit you as hard as itād gotten March or Tingyun. The latter is splayed across the steps of the main building, fast asleep, with Topaz checking her pulse regularly. Itās only now, that youāre on your feet, that you can feel the way the world turns. You can feel where the sun sits veiled under the night, to your left, and where the moon mingles with the stars, to your right.
He keeps you steady. His hands hold your arms; he doesnāt wince when your nails dig in your skin. And he keeps you safe. His left arm cups your back, because your wobbling comes dangerously close to knocking you into the fire. For a second, you feel like youāre on a different plane with him. Itās just you, Dan Heng, and the calm woodsāthe whisper of the woods. They hold a secret thatās ablaze under his touch, atop your flesh, yet so deep inside of you.Ā
You look in his eyes and youāre back in reality.Ā
āWhyād you stop?! It was getting goodāI thought you guys were going to kiss!ā Stelle exclaims. All fire in your chest withers away in an instant.
āYeah!ā March coincides, her voice a pitchy whine. āI dare you guys to kiss. Double dog dare you!ā
You and Dan Heng laugh in disbelief at her. Itās like the drink has cooked her brains away.
āWeāre not playing truth or dare, March,ā Evanescia says, a kitten-like hiccup in tow.
March frowns, whining like a petulant child. She lays her head on Stelleās shoulder, and the silvered girl cradles her face. March begins to tear up. āCan we play truth or dare? Please guys?ā
āSure, March, we can play truth or dare.ā Caelus obliges her, doing a horrible job of keeping his laughter at bay.
Her teariness instantly switches off and sheās shrieking in glee, clapping her hands together. āYay!ā She exclaims, sitting upright. āDan Heng, truth or dare?ā
He looks around the whole group. Everyoneās trying not to laugh. When he gets to you, he canāt keep it in, and neither can you. He wipes his face, shaking his head. āTruth.ā
āUgh, you always pick truth! Pick dare!ā
ā...Okay. Dare, then.ā
āI dare you two to kiss~ā March says, a drunken laugh bubbling out of her uncontrollably. She waves an unsteady finger between you and him. You canāt say youāre surprised. āNo skating out of this one, either. I wanna see some tongueāā
āOkay, okay! Good lord,ā you laugh, embarrassed. Your hands are cupping your cheeks and you run them down your face in mortification. And then you look at Dan Heng, and your gall drops to your ass. You spare March a look, āDo we have to do it⦠right here?ā
She nods, and then shrugs. āI understand if you want your privacyā¦here;ā March stands up on uneasy legs, completely steadied by Stelle and Sunday. She fishes in her front pocket for a moment before pulling out a tube of her signature bubblegum pink lipgloss. She tosses it over the fire to you with a grin. āPut that on. When yāguys come back, Dannie should be wearing it.ā
You cringe at her lack of subtlety, but Dan Heng seems to be humored by her. Or endearedāthey all seem to be great friends.
āCan we go now?ā He asks her, with a faux layer of exasperation.
March nods rapidly, her hands flapping in dismissal. Theyāre like the wings of a monarch. As soon as you two step out of the circle and take three steps forward into the darkness, the entire mood changes. Like an equivocal reality welcomes you.
As you walk to the dining hall in tandem, in a comfortable quiet, your mind drifts to last week: March had told you that Dan Heng was looking for you during dinner service, and that heād saved you a seat and a fruit cup. He noticed how you were always wanting one, trading for them with campers and counselors alike. And she told you that when heād heard about your muddy fall, he wasnāt laughing. He just wanted to know if you were okay, if you needed anything.
You just begin to think about how much he evidently thinks about you, and how heās always looking out for you. Heās always trying to help you, even by just being there.
Heās the kind of guy you used to dream about: the prince charming, coming to whisk you away from everything wrong in your life. The kind of guy you wished your dad was. The kind of guy who sees you, just as you are, and likes you anyway.
You donāt notice youāre crying until you get to the dining hall. The lights on the front of the chalet are motion-sensoredāa security detail thatās supposed to protect the campers more than watch you. When the lights flash on your faces, Dan Heng spares you a look- and then another, because your face is streaked with tears.
He takes his hand off the door. āAre you alright?ā He asks, concern dominant in his voice. āDid March make you uncoāā
āNo, I donāt- I donāt know why Iām crying.ā You cut him off, with a fervent shake of your head and an aggressive wipe of your hot cheeks. āI just got reminded of some things, thatās all. Iām okay, though, really.ā
Heās not convinced. His eyebrows are furrowed softly. He pulls the ajar door open and the two of you step into the desolate dining hall. The robustness of it is so heightened at night; it looks stagnant in time, with the wood walls, the antler chandelier, and rotted picnic tables. Itās so dark and quiet, too; you could hear spiders weaving their webs.Ā
The beer stash is in the kitchen, in an old cooler beside the pantry. But Dan Heng doesnāt go that way; he doesnāt go anywhere. He stops in his tracks and looks down at you. His eyes are golden again, but not by fire. Maybe he just radiates gilded lightāmaybe it surges when he looks at you. āDo you want to talk about it?ā He asks, his tone calm and his voice quiet.
You purse your lips, looking away from him. You donāt reply instantly. You walk ahead slightly, picking a random seat on one of the creaky bench seats. It grumbles under your weight.
You exhale deeply, āI donāt know why; I just started thinking about growing up. What it was like with my dad, what it was like coming here.ā He takes a seat beside you. Your legs are brushing against each other. You subconsciously lean into him. āHe used to get so mad at me. He was so disappointed that I was fighting, but he never cared why. I was defending myself mostlyāI mean, yeah, I was talking shit, but I never said anything about anyone who wasnāt mean to me first. I had to stick up for myself constantly, but no one ever listened until I used my fists.ā
Your eyes are glued to your hands, which are glued to your lap. You ball them and flex them, ball them and flex them; when your eyes flutter to blink, you can see all of your fights flash in your head. All of the trouble that seemed to chase you with an insatiable appetite. You couldnāt outrun it, so you just gave up and let it take you.
āHe started sending me here, ācause he was embarrassed of me, ān he wanted to fix me,ā your words are starting to blend. Tears are starting to wrap around your throatāyou didnāt know it still affected you like this. āAnā you age outta here at seventeen. I was cominā here every year for seven years ān nothinā changed. Iād only gotten worse. ā¦I think a part of it was that I needyā I needed my dad to just accept ān help me. But he hated meāā
āHe didnāt hate you.ā Dan Heng interjects.
You shake your head. āHe told me he couldnāt love meāā Youāre getting choked up. Your nails are pressing into your palms. There you go again, trying to defy the odds. āāThereāre other ways to show people that youāre better and stronger than them. Violence, muddying your name with trouble, is not the way.ā Thatās what he told me. He told me he couldnāt love me, ācause I didnāt have enough respect for māself anā him to conduct with class.ā
Dan Heng scoots closer, hesitant to hold you and give you comfort. But you lean into him; you wordlessly give him permission to melt the world away with his touch. He wordlessly obliges you, and the whole world crumbles away.
Quakes wrack through you as you slowly crescendo into a sob. Alcohol always makes you emotional. But youāve never said those things aloudāyouāve never let someone see you. Until Dan Heng.
Heās different. Heās like the calm after the storm, the freshness of a new day. Something about him, something youāve been trying to pinpoint since you first met him, is magnetic and fantastical. He feels almost unreal, like a true prince cut out of a fairytale and pasted into real life.
His arms feel like warm clouds around your skin and his heartbeat sounds like the thunder within them. You nestle into him closer, to adopt his weightlessness and fly away with him.
The calm after the storm; your tears have slowed to a trickle, your voice has tempered to a whisper. Your hands have found their way to his shirt, bunching the fabric in your fist, as though youād let him go and plummet to Hell.Ā
āAfter graduation, I moved out ān went no contact. Havenāt heard of or seen my dad in years. I dunno if heād be proud of meāI guess a part of me wishes he would be. Thatād he see who I am, who I always was,ā you sniffle. Your voice is so little, so rocky with trembles. But you continue. The weight on your chest is whittled to nothing. Thereās a sense of relief beneath all the humiliation. āI guess thatās why Iām so scared to do anything. I like you a lot and I donāt want to scare you off- I donāt want you to see anything you wonāt like. Heāll be right and Iāll be unloveable and thereāll be nothing left for meāIāll have to fight tooth and nail to see tomorrow again. And I donāt want to, I never did. I just want peace. ā¦I just want you.ā
A thick silence washes over the room. But itās not uncomfortable, itās not cursory. Itās filled with Dan Hengās breaths, with yours, with your realization and vindication all wrapped in one.
You start to laugh at yourself, sniffling. ā...I wouldāve never said any of this if I didnāt have Sampoās drink from Hell.ā
āDrunk words are sober thoughts.ā Is all he says. His voice sounds lower, a little more invigorated.
The two of you laugh lightly.Ā
You sit yourself up, still leaned close. You and Dan Heng both scan each otherās faces; both of your gazes land in the same place. First, the lips, then, the eyes. Youāre both thinking the same thing.
His hands have somehow found their way to your waist; yours have lost their purchase on his shirt and slid down to his lap. His eyes crinkle softly as he gives you a slight smile. āIs it appropriate toāā
You shut him up with a kiss. Much softer than youāve ever kissed a guy before. You must really like him.
He melts into the kiss instantly. His touch hardens, then softens, then travels up your body. His right hand cups your face and you lean into him. Doing so lets your faces slot naturally- your lips are at the most opportune angle to be separated and invaded with a careful, tentative tongue.
Your fingers scratch at his thighs. Then, theyāre flattening as you press forward, wanting to completely sink into his body. What was once tender has now erupted into a hungry wave of passion, and if you had no shame, youād undress him right here, right now.
Dan Heng licks your bottom lip as he pulls away; his eyes flutter as they fight to open. But when they do, they immediately soften at you. Heās breathless, but heād still give you more.
You laugh softly when you see him again. His lips have picked up a faint layer of Sampoās purple concoction. You brush your fingers against his plump lips. āYouāve got my color,ā you say, a tender lilt to your voice.
He gives you an almost sheepish grin with a shrug. āThereās the proof for March.ā He says, and you double over into him, laughing. He caresses your back lightly. āSpeaking of, we should probably head back soon,ā and then youāre letting him stand up, but he lets his hand linger in your hold. āIāll go grab the beers, and then we can go. Want anything?ā
āIām good,ā you nod, āthanks fār caring.ā
āItās hard not to.ā
You canāt remember a time youāve felt so girlish and giddy. You have to stop yourself from kicking your feet when he walks into the kitchen. You just rock in your seat, swaying your head left and right, right and left.
Itās so quiet in the dining hall, even with Dan Heng rummaging around glass bottles. You hear it: the crunching, the rustling, the decrescendoing of a presence. Your head immediately snaps to your right, toward the line of windowsāyou can see the trees and shrubs bristling, like theyāre swallowing a secret.
An equivocal reality, breathing down your neck, inching closer to you. Itās in the woods, that truth, and it sets the hairs on your body on end. What or whoever it may be is still watching you; you feel the attention on your skin and in your nerves.
The calm after the storm; when Dan Heng returns, you forget for a moment, you slip into this sweet fantasy. He has a fruit cup for you, a proud grin alongside it.Ā
The feeling from outside is gone, or youāve just forgone it. You turn your back to it again.
Never turn your back on nature; you never know whatās going to make an example out of you.
ā-----Ā
A heatwave has hit the area again. Itās the same sweltering heat; the shade offers no reprieve. You can physically feel the air around you and feel it entering your body.Ā
Promptly at six AM, Ms Himeko had walkieād the staff to make their way to the main building. Upon groggy arrival, the fiery woman greeted you all warmly. She pulled her black robe tighter over her cleavage, crossing her legs, āThe weather is absolutely ridiculous today,ā she began, a directing hand leading you all to the TV behind her. The weather report was casted and it was all a deep red. Dozens of warnings splayed across the screen to stay hydrated, keep inside if you can, and avoid excessive exercise. āItād be irresponsible to make the children do the activities like this. But, we also cannot negate our duties to helping them grow.ā
āDo you have an alternative?ā Ms Yao asked, shifting her weight on her feet.
āThereās not much we can make happen in such a short time,ā Ms Himeko clicked her tongue. āWeāve already had to tweak the menuā¦an oven or a stove might be fatal.ā
āCouldnāt we use the paintball guns again, and just fill them with water this time?ā Luka asked. His tone was much too chipper for the crack of dawn.
Mr Anaxa shook his head with a sigh, āWe have 260 kids. Thereās not enough of us or equipment to go around.ā He rolled his eyes when Luka deflated, āThereās nothing wrong with giving a lecture. They get to sit still and cool and still receive the lesson; they just donāt get to have any fun with it.ā
āThatās cruel!ā March protested, āThey only make as much progress as they do because of the activities!ā
āIn the real world with real triggers, they arenāt going to have waterballoons and kayaks to help them address conflict.ā Mr Anaxa argued back.
The room soon quickly became filled with unintelligible bickering. Everyone was going back and forth about the next and best course of action, but nobody could agree. Time was ticking; the children would be getting up soon and breakfast needed to be prepared.
A gavel-like banging silenced the room. At the head of the darkened corridor stood Mr Yang, his face lined with insomnia and stress. His hair was a disheveled mess, and his robe was haphazardly strung over his body, held together by a tight grip. He tapped his cane on the ground again, this time softer, as he cleared his throat. āThis is no way to solve an issue, everyone,ā and his eyes scanned the crowd. It felt like being in trouble with your dad. The same sinking feeling pooled in your gut. āI overheard some interesting ideas. I think water games are a given. Weāll bring out everything we have and just make it workāā
āWe can do stations,ā you blurted out. Mr Yangās head cocked slightly. āOh- sorry. I didnāt mean to cut you off.ā
āNo, no. It was a fine addition,ā He reassured you, a soft smile and nod in tow. āIf you all can handle all 260 childrenāwhich, Iām positive you canāwe can make this happen. If it goes without a hitchā¦ā he trailed off, giving Ms Himeko a glance. She gave him a nod, and his smile grew. āWeāll reward you all with time at the lake.ā
Cheers and glee polluted the room. Mr Yang had to bang his cane against the ground to silence you all again.Ā
āMind yourselves out there, tonight. Tomorrow is Monday, so donāt go too crazy.ā Ms Himeko warned. Her gaze lingered on Sampo, then moved to the twins and March. She gave them all a quirk of her brow. āWe wonāt be monitoring youāwe will be indulging ourselves on frozen margaritas. After lights out for the campers, the main building is closed.ā
And so, after another fifteen minutes of planning the day and allocating duties, you all had gotten to work. The therapists stayed behind to tweak their lessons for the day; the kitchen staff had taken off to prepare, and the counselors had set off to storage and the recreation room, pulling out tarps and buckets and balloons and so much shit, dolleyās had to be trudged around.
That was the first time youād seen Blade again in weeks. After spotting him at the bonfire, you hadnāt seen him around like you thought you would. He vanished into thin air, but appeared again when you and the twins had loaded up a wagon with paintball and water guns and cones. The thing was ridiculously heavy, so Caelus pushed it while you and Stelle pulled. It was an awkward shuffle out of the storage shed, but it became easier when the door was held wide open for you to back out. There was a smoky smell thatād caught your nose, a musk. You traced it back up to Blade, dressed in all black, holding the door open. He was already looking at you when you met his eyes. You swallowed and dropped your gaze.
You could feel Stelleās eyes on you.
And then he spoke. āYou guys should be more careful,ā he said. It was the first time youād heard him speakāhis voice sent chills down your body. It was in your bones, like the roar of a tiger, deep and resounding. There was a softness to it, a quietness, that subdued the edge and gruffness. āThe latch was down. You couldāve gotten locked in.ā
He spoke so matter-of-factly, so coldly. You were scared to respond, so you just nodded. The twins followed your lead.
āThanks, Blade,ā Stelle chirped. She stagnated to smile at him and hold a hand out for him to shake. He slowly took to it. ā...That..is your name, right?ā
āIt is what I am called, yes.ā
Stelle quirked her head. āIs there a reason for it?ā
It was only then that his expression moved. It was just a wrinkle that ran down his face, like he was fighting something inside of him. And then he pulled his hand away from Stelle and turned on his heels. āMy past,ā is all he said, even lower than his previous words.
And then he walked off, in the wrong direction. Instead of taking the path back to the camp, he went right and walked to the woods. The sun was just barely rising; itād have been impossible to see.Ā
You and the twins stayed quiet for a moment, trying to digest the haunting feeling that slunk over you. You shared glances. Stelle held her wrist, holding her hand up to the two of you.Ā
āDude. His hand was like, so cold. Like, deadass freezing.ā Then, she shuddered, sparing another look over her shoulder. āWhere did he even come from? That was soāā
āThat was creepy as fuck,ā you whispered. You were looking at the woods again. It didnāt feel like the three of you were alone. āLetās go and set this stuff up before I piss myself.ā
Just in time for Himekoās morning announcement, you all had finished setting up twelve stations for an exhausting day of water play. The sprinklers were on, and there was water running continuously over the makeshift slides. Inflatable pools were full of lake water, water balloons, rainbow golf balls, and tree debris. Sweat stains covered everyoneās uniforms already, but the kids were excited to see what was going on as they ran to the dining hall.
The lessons were geared toward effective communication and collaboration again, using the games as conduits. Ms Jade and Mr Anaxa led the first lesson, and then you counselors took the kids over to their stations. Making it work with 260 eager children was an arduous task. Your throat was so dry from all the yelling and chasing them down, and every part of your body was sweaty. The first few hours were spawned from Hell.Ā
Lunch break was spent in the shower in ice cold water, rinsing the sweat off your skin. It was then you thought of Blade again.
Stelle said he was cold⦠You became hyper aware of the cold droplets on your skin, how they felt pattering against you and running over you. You wondered if his infatuation would lead to his touch on your skin, if he wanted it to.Ā
You didnāt want him toāyouād seen him up close, and as beautiful as he was, he was haunting. There was something living under his skin, something that looked you in the eyes and dared to devour you then and there. You thought about the woods again. Whyād he gone to them?
The day couldnāt end fast enough. A part of you hoped youād find some answers come nightfall.
After lights out for the campers, the main building is closed.
As you all walked to the lake, you saw the lights go out and heard the faint sound of glasses clinking. You could totally go for a frozen margarita, but the remnants of Sampoās stash would have to suffice.
You didnāt pack a swimsuit, so March let you borrow one of hers. It was quite small on you. Suddenly, you were cold, and goosebumps decorated your skin.Ā
March gave you a playful smack on the butt. āOh, you put me to shame in that!ā She grinned. āDan Heng is going to lose his mind!ā
He keeps it quite demure when he sees you. He and Sunday had already made it down to the lake; a lot of the counselors did. Some were already in the water, some were dancing around the edge. He waves you guys over, already scooting to make room for you to sit.
āYou look niceā¦ā he compliments, his eyes pulling over your visage. Thereās almost stars reflected across his deep blues. His face is flushed a hungry pink. āI like your bathing suit. Itās pretty on you.ā
āThank you,ā you give him a sheepish grin. āIām borrowing it from March. ā¦I like your trunks. The green looks good on you.ā
āThanks.āĀ
Your hands are barely touching. Your fingers crawl to each other, to dance with one another amid the grass.Ā
āGod, you guys make me sick!ā Stelle yells from behind you, approaching with her brother.Ā
Heās making retching noises, holding his stomach dramatically. āSo gross! Take your PDA somewhere else!ā
You flick the pair off, laughing.Ā
March boos them, āYou guys are haters! Theyāre cute!ā
āYeah, yeah, whatever,ā Caelus says, waving you off. He plops down beside March, pushing her shoulder before pulling her back in, his arm wrapped around her neck. āIāve seen enough of their googly-eyes and drooling for one lifetime.ā
āJealousyās not a great look on you,ā Sunday interjects, looking directly at Caelus.
āIām not jealous!ā
āOh, really?ā
āYes, really! Iāā
āAht aht aht! Good vibes only at the lake,ā Sampo comes out of nowhere, carrying beers for each of you. Heās always trying to find his way around you all. āMight I interest you in some ice cold brew to get the positivity going?ā
Sunday gives the tall man a laugh. āWhat is this? A sales pitch?ā
āIām not paying you a dime,ā Stelle adds in, shrugging. She fishes a vape out of her top, shaking it for Sampo to see. He deflates childishly.
You reach your arm out to him, āIāll take one. ā¦As long as itās free.ā
Sampo leans down with a cheshire grin, letting you pluck a beer from his hand with an icy clink. āOf course! Friends get discounts.ā He gives Stelle a side-eye with his words, and she replies with a middle finger and puff of her vape.
Itās a twist-off cap, but Dan Heng still offers to open it for you. His kindness and fondness for you never fails to make you gush. You pass him the bottle and he twists it with ease, tucking the top in his pocket.
āHey, Sampo,ā March calls to him. āDo you think everyoneād wanna play a game?ā
āWhat kind of game?ā
āHmmā¦how about⦠hide and seek?ā
You wound up the unlucky fool to be the hider. It was decided by a contest: the person who could hold their breath underwater the shortest time would be the hider. Unfortunately, it was you, but only by a hair.
They give you three minutes to hide. The unfair advantage of the twenty-nine of them searching for you called for a lengthy hiding time. They turn their backs and promise not to peek; you turn to them and put your eyes to the sky.
The woods stretch and stand over youālooking overhead just shows you the treetops and slivers of the sky. They sway with the wind. Their dance drenches you in anxiety. Lingsha had given you a small flashlight before the game commenced, no bigger than your hand.
You press the button on its bottom, and the light flickers to life. Itās strong, but small; it only covered a tight area at a given moment. You stutter as you move, feeling somewhat hesitant to take off into the woods. It lurches over you as you crawl into it, slowly picking up pace. You feel like youāve been swallowed. The wind whistles; it bristles against your shoulders; you look behind you, and it seems as though the trees have crowded around you. You can no longer see your friends.
It all looks the same.Ā
Dan Heng had told you that, and you remember what it was like from your childhood, but thereās a life in the woods that makes it so unlike memories. Leaves and twigs crunch under your every step. Some branches scratch against you as you run through. You donāt have an idea of where youāre going; youāre just moving until you find something to duck behind and hold your breath.
You think that youāre going farther east, and youāll reach the edge of the property line before you know it. You also know that the amphitheatre has a few storage sheds you can tuck into. You pick up the pace, pushing north.Ā
Nothing is looking familiarāyou flash the light all around, and all you see are trees. Andā¦a shed, or an outhouse, or a stack of rotten wood. Itās just sitting there, all dark, all foreboding. You hear distant yelping and laughter. Three minutes have run out fast. You have no choice but to scurry ahead.
The door to the shed is stubborn as you pull it. Itās bare around itāhard dirt is the only thing it stands on. Itās like the grass and the trees, the life, is repelled. Something deep in your chest is attempting to dissuade you as well, but youāre defiant.Ā
Itāll only open a sliver. You have to hold your breath and turn to the side to slip in, and still, the gray wood rips against you.Ā
You suck in a deep breath, wincing quietly. You neglect pulling the door up and keeping a firm grip on the flashlight to grab your arm and look over your shoulder, trying to gauge if the pain youāre feeling is surface or cuts through your flesh. You canāt see all that well, but it feels like broad scuffs. The one time you wear a bathing suit, and youāre anywhere but the water.
The flashlight has rolled next to your foot, and you crouch to retrieve it. Shining it on the shed around you, you see the walls are covered with tools andā¦weapons. Short swords and thin daggers, cleavers and hatchets. Some are old and rusty, some are fresh and new.
A work table is right across the door, and there are scraps and pieces all over it. Homeless blades, with handles and sheaths waiting to give them life. Thereās a gas, unlit candle in the corner. You canāt tell if itās all recently used.
Maybe Stelle got the story details wrong, and The Hunter worked right here.Ā
You turn the flashlight off and tuck into the top left corner. You didnāt realize that the shed didnāt have a floor until you sit on it, the moist yet firm dirt.Ā
Itās quiet. Crickets sing around, and the greenery dances to them. Thereās a distant owl hooting, and indistinct conversation among your peersāyou can hear them calling your name, complaining to each other that youāre nowhere to be found.
Time is passing so slowly as youāre hiding away. Your mind has no choice but to wanderā¦
Three days ago, Stelle was back scaring the campers again. She had much more time to tell the story of The Hunterāof the bouquets tied with twine, dead doves, and stumpy daggers he left for his crush. The prints he left on her windows and the breaths he left on her shoulders. The debauched love he tried to give away.
And when he snapped and killed the general, he wore the blood like a trophy. It stained his clothes, and he never took the time to clean himself up. His blade, which he used to bash the general and stab him once through, stayed streaked with blood.
The other military personnel said he had a crazy look in his eyes, something esoteric, something unalive. Beastly. He was no longer a man, but a figure of carnality, who needed to be put down.
They wrestled him down and shackled him, muzzling him. He was dragged down to the lake andā āThis is where the story gets muddy,ā Stelle said, āsome say he was bludgeoned, others say he got decapitated, others say he was hungāeither way, he died!ā
You laugh to yourself. Sheās so stupidā
Footsteps.Ā
Theyāre light, and theyāre close. You can hear the dirt sinking around soles. You can hear the soft, measured breathing. You hold your breath.
You honestly didnāt anticipate being found out here; you donāt even know where you are. You donāt know how long youāve been hiding either, but it feels like an eternity.Ā
Footsteps inch even closer. Theyāre right on the other side of the door. You slap a hand over your mouth intuitively.
The figure stands before the sliver of the door, blocking the moonlight. A head slips in andā
āDan Heng?ā You ask. Your voice is light on his name.
He grins, pushing the door open further. āFound you.ā With the door wider, he can lend you a hand and help you to your feet. His other hand falls to your hip, to steady you. You sink into his touch. āHowād you end up all the way out here?ā
You give a half shrug. āHowād you find me all the way out here?ā
āYou left some tracks; I just happened to notice them.ā
āI did? Oh, fuck,ā you spare a glance at your sandals. Thereās mud caked up on the sides. āI was just running with no plan. I didnāt know where to goāusually, I hide with my friends, butā¦ā
Dan Heng gives a short laugh, and you follow suit. Youāre closer to him now. He holds you tighter. You lose your train of thought, and the two of you just linger in silence.Ā
He steps back out of the shed; you follow. He looks over his shoulder, then back to you. āWe should probably get back to the lake,ā he says. His voice is so soft, almost unsure.
āProbably,ā you parrot, losing your sense in his eyes. Stars reflect in his eyes; itās like youāre staring into the galaxy. You pull your arms to loop around his neck, to pull him in. Your bodies are closer than theyāve ever beenāyour hearts are closer than theyāve ever been. You feel this urge to be close to him, to have fun in a way youāve been holding back from. āBut not yet. Think we have a few minutesā¦ā
He gets a little coy, a little shy. āWhat are you thinking ofā¦?ā
You lean into him, pressing a chaste kiss to his lips. His hands instantly grip your waist. Then you peck him again, and again, and again, until he captures your lips in a breathtaking kiss. And you melt, and he holds you that much tighter, bringing you that much closer.Ā
The kiss is just as tender as the ones youāve shared thus far, but so full of passion, it teeters over a dangerous edge. The attraction is so palpable, you can feel it dripping off of you. The moon and the stars are bright tonight, but theyāre skewed by the trees. You have all the privacy of the universe. You two are the only things that matter.
You somehow stumble backwards, and your back collides with the side of the shed. Dan Hengās hands roam timidly down your waist and in circles across your thighs. Your left leg instinctively hikes up, wrapping around his leg and pulling him in, impossibly closer. Your tongues slither into a waltz with each other; your lips smack against each other. Every second numbs your head and melts your surroundings. You feel totally safe with him, totally free to shed your guard and give in, chase him.
March was rightāyou do want to know what he sounds like, what he feels like, what he tastes like. You want to see his face and hear his voice first thing in the morning. You want him to be your normal, to be the prince to your princess and make your fairytale dreams come true. You want to be good to him. You want to make him feel good.Ā
He grunts into your mouth, softly, quietly, more breathy and light than anything else. Your smile breaks the seamlessness of the kiss. You giggle into the kiss, moving your hands to cup his cheeks.
āI like you a lotā¦ā You whisper, lips still brushing his.
His eyes flutter, hesitant to open. His cheeks and the tips of his ears are pink. His smile is so boyish. Heās so soft, so good. It makes your heart pound in your chest.
āI like you a lot too,ā he says, leaning in, brushing his nose against your face. āIām grateful that I got to meet you this summer.ā
Now, your fingers are lacing through his short, chocolate curls. Heās leaning into your touch, almost like a dog, so pleased by your affection.
You want to know what he sounds like, what he feels like, what he tastes like.
You kiss him again, this time heavier, with all the weight in your chest let out. The wind picks up, and the goosebumps on your skin become more pronounced. His hands trace them, finding stars in the patterns.
He lets you take the leadāhe lets you overpower him, driving him backwards in an awkward shuffle into the shaft of a tree. He winces, and you mutter an apology, and he kisses the sorry away, swallowing it.
And there are soft whimpers in the back of his throat: ones that are fraught to slip out, but catch your ears. Ones that beg you to kiss him harder, to suck his tongue and draw a new layer of saliva across his lips.
Your name is a hushed mumble, and you return the favor. It must be the moonlight peeking through the trees, dawning on your skin, thatās making you feel feral, like you must give into him tonight.
You break the kiss to peck down his jaw, then his neck, his shoulder, his chest. His head is turned, his face is hot pink. Heās timid to look at you. āDan Heng,ā you call out to him, lightly scratching your nails against his skin. āLook at me⦠Do you trust me?ā
His eyes find yours in the dim night. He nods, āYes,ā he answers with a thick gulp.
You squat down slowly, your fingers tracing the band of his trunks, eyes never leaving his.
Footsteps. You and Dan Heng freeze, heads snapping east to see if anybodyās coming.Ā
The life in the woods is loud: the insects humming, the wind rustling, the owls singing. Mustāve been a deer or somethingā¦
Your eyes meet again. Your fingers dip lower into his trunks, and he shivers.
āAre you sure?ā He asks you. āYou donāt have toāā
āI want to; but if you donātāā
āNo, no,ā he cuts you off, voice slowly dying. āPleaseā¦ā he croaks.
You feel a pulse below. You have to take a deep breath to calm yourself down, fluttering your eyes shut.
In that single second, Blade has appeared.Ā
You instinctively yelp, losing your balance and falling straight onto your ass. Dan Hengās eyes blow wide, āWhat?! Whatās wronāā
Thump!
Blade swings at himāwhat seems to be a short swordāthe ricasso slamming against the side of Dan Hengās head. He instantly folds over and hits the ground, hard. A scream is ripped out of your throatāyou kick dirt from under your feet as you try to rise and scurry away, but you almost feel foreign in your body, like you canāt move.Ā
You look Blade in his face, which catches a thin sliver of moonlight. The top half of his face is shadowed, but you can see his mouth, flat, but the corners pulled ever-so-slightly up.
āPlease, donāt hurt me,ā you whimper. Youāve still failed to get up. You grip the ground in fear.
āI would never,ā he replies. Thereās a forlornness in his voice, a quietness. Itās not as tender as Dan Hengās; Blade scares you. Your body hairs are up on end. You can tell heās staring right into your face. āI need you.ā
āWhāĀ whāā You sputter. You keep scooting away even though he doesnāt move an inch. āPlease, no.ā Your chest is tight. You somehow get onto your feet, and your legs feel so heavy, so disconnected from you.Ā
You donāt say another word. Your eyes flicker to Dan Heng, and you swear you can see blood on his temple, pouring out of his head. And you look back to Blade. Heās still unmoving, still as haunting as ever.
You take off.
Darting away into the vast woods, unsure if youāre going in the right direction. You just run, against the wind, against the feeling in your gut, against the tears in your eyes.Ā
You spare a look over your shoulder to see if heās following you, but you canāt see anything. You canāt hear anything other than your own heavy breaths and steps. He could be right behind you, and you would never know.
You would never know that Bladeās letting you get ahead; heās letting you get so close to getting away from him.Ā
And then the wind picks up again, and his hair swings in the wind, in the opposite direction. He drops the sword. And then he takes off, speed that of a beast.
You just keep running, taking leaves and branches to the face and across your body. One arm is holding your boobs taut to your chest; the other is swatting indiscriminately ahead of you. You hope that youāll barrel into one of your fellow counselors and that youāll save yourself, and hopefully Dan Heng.
As much as you want to stay focused on your escape, your mind is running as fast as your body. So many thoughts and images fly through: Dan Heng, your moment, how he wanted to go backāif youād gone back when he found you, would everything be okay?āthe others, Blade himself. You wonder if theyāre okay, if Blade had gotten to them first.
Where are the security measures Ms Himeko and Mr Welt had set up? Where are the alarms and the lightsādo they not come this far out? Where even are you? Is the camp close? Is anyone around? Can anyone help you?
You hear a twig snap to your left. āNo!ā You scream; you donāt know why.
You veer further right, barely avoiding the arms of a short and thick tree. You duck under, struggling to pull yourself up straight and keep going. Youāre running off straight adrenaline and fear, and it feels like your chest is ready to explode.
Sweat runs down your hairline, and a droplet falls right into your eye. You yelp, immediately wiping your eyeāthe distraction takes you right into a tree stump, catching your leg and sending you into an unceremonious, ugly tumble.Ā
You roll down the slight slope, seemingly deeper into the woods. Rocks and branches scrape and scratch you, and the hard dirt is unforgiving against your weakening body.
The base of a tree catches you: you roll right into it, your stomach slamming hard against the bark. You choke out a gasp, your eyes shooting wide as the pain shoots through your entire body.Ā
It hurts to move, to try and stand up, but you do anyway, burying your nails in the tree bark. You want to scream and cry, but youāre too scared to make a sound, because you donāt know where he might be.
You just spend a second catching your breath, looking around, trying to spot anything. It all looks the same; just trees and shrubbery and darknessānothing but a swallowing emptiness that dooms you.Ā
Which direction should you go? Nothing seems promising, nothing seems safe.
Footsteps.
You freeze.
Out of the corner of your left eye, you spot what seems to be a fallen tree. You should run. You know you should. But youāre scared, and youāre unsure, and you dive to the ground, ducking behind the fat log.
You lay your head on the back of your hand while the other one holds your mouth. In the few seconds on the ground, you can feel ants crawling up your legs and around your hips. You canāt move; you have no idea where he is, or if he can see you.
The footsteps come closer. Theyāre heavy, bootedāthey sound like the drums of death.Ā
Step. Step. Step. Boom. Boom. Boom.
Like the clap of thunder. And you can hear his breaths: heavy, like an exasperated hunt animal. You swear that heās trying to sniff you out, and you swear that itās working. His sounds get closer and closer, and you squeeze your eyes shut, holding your breath even though it hurts your chest.
And then theyāre gone, decrescendoing into the forestās natural ambience. Youāre not adept enough to know which way heās gone, but as you rise to your feet, cautiously, you hope itās not the way youāre going.
You start running again, just as directionless as before.Ā
Footsteps.
Rapid, quick, close. You suck in a deep breath, looking over your shoulder, but you donāt see anything, still.
In the time it takes your head to swing back around, youāre colliding into something hard and falling straight onto your ass. You scream, trying to turn around and clamber to your feet, but Blade grabs your ankles, pulling you to him.
Your nails scratch against the dirt; grass is ripping straight from the root. He drops to his knees, straddling you to the ground. You try to fight yourself free, but he takes your arms and pins them hard to the ground.
You whine and writhe futily, refusing to acquiesce.Ā
He leans over you, and you feel his long hair brush against your exposed skin. You whimper, trying to move away, but he only leans in closer, until those beastly, fiery breaths fan against your face.Ā
āIāve been waiting all night..for this,ā he says lowly. And he breathes you in deeply, his nose pressed against your neck, right at your pulse. Itās fast like that of a rabbit. āIāve been waiting on you forever, love.ā
Fear and confusion etch deeply onto your face. You finally bring yourself to look him in the face, and you catch him waiting for you to look at him. His pupils are so far dilated that the sunniness of his irises is almost eclipsed. Frenzy lives in that darknessāa hungry, hysteric fervor.
His touch is weirdly cold. Icy. A stark juxtaposition against the thick heat around you.Ā
You still squirm in his hold, only slightly, as the fear slowly starts to whittle away at your ambition. He doesnāt move a muscle; heās so undeterred by your efforts. He just breathes you in again, deeply, with a deep, satisfied, and guttural groan rattling out of him.
His hips jut softly against your thighs. You can feel a growing bulge pushing through his pants, threatening you. You suck in a shaky breath, squirming more. He only grips your arms tighter, a warning.
āI will never let you away from me, never again,ā he says, his voice so dark and primal. And then, his head is directly over yours, and heās leaning in, kissing you passionately. His lips are slightly chapped and dryārough like dehydrated wood. You donāt kiss back; you squirm away. His tongue forces its way into your mouth, just to meet yours and make him quake. He sighs out, satisfied, leaning his forehead against yours. āWorth the wait,ā he mumbles absentmindedly.
Your wrists are released, and they instantly ache. He drags the pads of his fingers down your arms, sweeping across your collarbones. And then his hands slink around your neck, and before you can react, theyāre squeezing down, trapping the airflow in your chest. You wheeze, your eyes wide like the full moon tonight. So glossy and bright. Your arms flail, slapping and scratching him.
āHarder,ā he instructs, his voice marred into a deep-seated growl. His hips snap with an uncontrollable strength. Tears slip down your face. You feel like youāre going to die. āHit me harder. Like you want to hurt me.ā
Fuzziness reverberates through you. Youāre starting to lose sense of all reality; youāre starting to succumb to the darkness on the other side of your heavy lids. You wheeze like a fat pig, but you still try your best. Your weak fist repeatedly knocks against his sharp features, your buzzy palm swatting unsuccessfully.
He releases your throat. You lost enough air to spiral into a coughing fit, to be unable to use your body, to keep your consciousness.
He scoots down, sitting on the ground right in front of your feet. Your soles are pressed against his thighs.Ā
And you feel his fingers at your waistline. It tingles, and you feel the urge to run away from the feeling, but youāre only strong enough to flinch. They undo the ties to Marchās swimsuit, making quick work of her tight knots. The way he tears them away is surprisingly tender. He brings the bottoms down and off your legs, and they come immediately to his face. His nose catches the seat of the bottoms perfectly, catching the sweat and the musk and the twinge of sweetness from your earlier arousal.Ā
You hear the air in his chest rumble. It makes your blood run cold.Ā
In a quick instant, his hands are pushing your legs up, and heās wedging in between them. You canāt see him, and you refuse to look at him, but you can feel everything. You can feel his breath against your butt, then against your exposed cunt. And you can feel him nuzzle right into you, his nose against your clit and his mouth between your folds. You hitch a sharp breath while he inhales a deep breath, pulling the scent of your sweat, of your body, of your fear, deep into the recesses of his mind. He can smell the lake water still faintly clinging to you. He can smell what Dan Heng made you feel: sweet, excited, enticing, and how he makes you feel: salty, alarmed, repulsed. Itās an intoxicating mixāthe purest a human could be.
And you can feel his mouth finally open, and his tongue pressing into your folds. It feels inhumanly long: the tip reaches down to your entrance, circling it momentarily, while the shaft dances in place against you. Again, your breath catches in your chest, and you can only wiggle around. Your throat hurts when you try to push out sounds, and your strength slowly returns.
He makes a loud, obscene sucking sound as he takes in your cunt. And then again, with a focus on your clit, that pounds like your heartbeat, that pounds like his footsteps. Boom. Boom. Boom.Ā
You hate the heat that blooms across your flesh, and the electricity that races through your veins. You hate that your throat hurts when you try to speak. āNo,ā You push. Your voice is gravelly and broken. āPleaseāā
Your breaths quicken as he attacks your clit. Itās so sloppy and uncoordinated, but the fear has marred your sensesāitās allowed you to feel the sensations deep in your gut, in your bones, in your head. You can feel your eyes getting heavy, and when the blackness takes over, you feel the thoughts telling you to receive the pleasure, to respond. And you donāt want to, you shake your head to try and stop the thoughts, but your body wants it. Your body trembles, your body dews, your body gives up.
And Blade swallows your submission, drinks it like a man dying of thirst. Your clit still receives attention as he focuses his attention on your now weeping hole, tracing his tongue around the pulsing and memorizing the beats. He wants to commit the way you taste and feel to memory. He wants to remember, intimately, the way your thighs start to press against his head, and your cunt flutters against his tongue as it sweeps through you.Ā
The way you shudder and try not to moan, but they slip out anyway. The way more and more arousal drips out of you like a broken spigot, and his mouth is the well to catch it all. He licks and licks and sucks and sucks, with a deafening volume that competes with the wildlife.Ā
Your orgasm builds quickly, and it feels so much different than anything youāve ever felt before. It feels like tight pressure, like your stomach sinking into a void. It feels like everything is at your core, in Bladeās mouth, like thatās the beginning and end of everything in the world. Maybe in the universe.
His mouth handles the involuntary buck of your hipsāhis pace stays undeterred. If anything, it kicks up; his tongue flicks faster and rolls around in your folds like an excited puppy. And he groans into you, right toward your bones, so you can feel him indenting into your body. So youāll never forget the way your body quaked, and your pussy dripped into him, for him.
He eats you to completion: until that pressure goes and releases in a steady downpour down the curve of your ass, until his tongue is chasing every last drop. And he pauses, pushing your legs further back until your thighs burn; all to sink his teeth deep into the fat of your butt, carving the shape of his maw into your skin.Ā
You give him a long, drawn-out whine, like a tire being deflated. Your hands capture the ground beneath you, and you squirm again, feeling too much that it starts to become nothing at all.
It feels like being swallowed by a black hole. It feels like thereās nothing left inside of you, like your soul has been reaped, and he keeps going.Ā
Blade doesnāt miss a beat. Heās back attacking your cunt, this time, more feverish, more beastly, with the grunts and snarls to pair. Like a vicious dog with a bone, he teeths and licks at you. And it truly is too much that it becomes nothing.
Youāre hot like youāre in the heart of a star, but youāre empty like itās exploded around you. Pleasure races through your veins at the lightspeed of a shooting star, and youāre too dazed to catch the bliss. It just blurs through you, setting your pelvis ablaze, feeding the ravenous beast more ichor.
He keeps going and going, not giving your nerves a second to rest. Your poor clit is stiff and puffy, exasperated, but still taken into his hot mouth, sucked and flicked around. You feel like a piece of meat being sucked off the bone, just a means of satiation.
And this time, you donāt really feel it: the build-up or the release. You just know youāve came because everything feels wetter and stickier, and Blade chases the stream again, back to the spot he marked. He licks and sucks it all up. And he leaves a twin bite mark beside the previous one, right on the seat of your bottom.
Now, you can breathe. Only for a second. Your legs get to fold over each other for a second as Blade strips his pants away. You hear fabric tearing, which you can only assume is his underwear. And then your second of brevity is spoiled, because heās touching you again.
This time, his touch is searing, burning into your skin. You can feel his fingerprints imprinting deeply into your flesh, polluting you forever.Ā
āNo,ā you whimper, using a defensive hand to swat at his touch. He ignores you.Ā
His hands on your waist harshly flip you over, giving you an unceremonious collision onto the ground. His hands are soon all over your body: first, positioning your hips, then spreading your legs out, then dancing up your spine, over your shoulder, then atop your left shoulder as his arm wraps against your neck.Ā
Then you feel his dick against you. You feel the weight, the girth, the length, the readiness. His arm around your neck presses harder, encasing you tightly in his hold. And as he begins to rut against you, you feel fresh tears well.
Grass tickles your sensitive clit, giving you tremors wracking all through you. You hang your head over his hold, becoming completely weak beneath him. He grunts like an animal. He feels like one on top of you. Legs trapping yours, bare cock against your ass, hands holding you hostage. And he just ruts against you, letting his cock wedge between your cheeks and be swallowed by the carnal warmth you emit. You can feel the ghost of him against your holes, and you clench and pulse and drip in pure fear, but he doesnāt take the plunge.
He only humps you, like a dog in heat, panting and grunting. Bare skin to bare skin. Person to person. And he leans forward, completely hostaging you against him. Heart to heart.Ā
āI love you,ā he grits into your ear. He snakes a greedy, possessive hand under the bikini top, cupping a neglected breast. Hot tears run over your cheeks.
āPleaseāā you whimper. Heās tweaking your nipple, pinching the poor bud until your throat is squeaking.Ā
His hips snap harder. The drooling tip of his cock keeps tapping your back. āYouāre the love of my life,ā he mumbles. He sounds like heās in another worldāhe is in another world. āYou make air worth breathing. Itās all..ever been for youāā
āPlease,ā you repeat. Itās all you can say.
He abandons your nipple and makes a fast pace to your pussy. His fingers catch your clit, and you let out a wet gasp. Still so sensitive down there, still so wet, it takes nothing to light your fire, and his fingers start strumming again. He matches the pace of his thrusts; he makes your brain feel them in your stomach, feel like heās taking your body inside and out.
Now, your voice is only a moan, weak and feeble. You wrap your hands around his forearm, sinking your nails into his skin. He doesnāt wince or reply; he only inhales deeply, running his tongue against the shell of your ear.
āI love you,ā he says again.
ā...I love you, too,ā you reply, unsure of why. It feels like you should, maybe to make him feel better, to subdue the storm within him. His arm around your neck feels like itās made of bricks, like it could crush your windpipe with ease.
He delivers a sharp thrust, pushing your whole body forward. āNo, you donāt,ā he says, and you gulp. You shake your head, trying to refuteā āYou hate me. Say you hate me.ā
You feel inclined to listen to him. As your lips part, he pinches your clit, and your body stutters. Your brain stalls. You only do whatās at your foundation, what is the deepest part of you: you lightly sob, and you tell him, āI hate you. So fucking much.ā
He groans; you donāt see how his eyes roll into the back of his head.Ā
His hips stall for a second as he lets his teeth sink into your shoulder, giving you another deep-seated bite. It makes you silently gasp.
āI hate you,ā you repeat, voice quieter, but tone harder. It feels like his throat being sliced, or pelted to death by stones. It feels like a complete decimation. The ruins of love. āI want you to die for thisāā you hiccup over a moan, and you drop your head. You sniffle, āYouāre an animal⦠youāre sick.ā
His thrusts return, shorter and faster, and his breaths are constant in your ear. āYouāre my everything.ā
āYouāre nothing to me,ā you spit, freeing a hand to claw his hand that plays with your clit. āNothing.ā
His sounds sound deeper, and you can feel him spiraling. You can feel his head going a mile a minute, and his heart thumping like a treacherous thunderstorm, like this void is ready to explode.Ā
And his orgasm is quickāhis animalism pours out of him as he ruts shamelessly and pathetically against your butt. It takes a minute for the thrusts to start feeling wet, but soon you feel the wet warmth of his load being pooled in small ponds on your back, and spread between your cheeks.
āI need you,ā he says, looping tight circles on your clit. Your hips pop back and forth against him, and you both groan gutturally, sharing the cold chill against your skin. You canāt hear him, not over your own heartbeat. He pulls you closer, skin to skin, head to head, heart to heart. āRight now, and forever.ā
ā-----Ā
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The incessant banging doesnāt stop.
The door is swung open with an exasperated sigh, but that quickly melts away. March, Stelle, Tingyun, and Sunday stand on the other side of the door, faces all melted in concern.Ā
āM-Ms Himeko! We have an emergency!ā March exclaims, reaching through the threshold and pulling the older womanās arm. āWe need you!ā
āSomething very bad has happened, Miss,ā Sunday says, his tone even yet unsure.
Himeko furrows her brows. āIs someone injured?ā
They all share an uneasy look.Ā
āWe think soā¦ā Tingyun says.
March seemingly bursts into tears, covering her face with her hands. Stelle wraps a supportive arm around her, giving her soothing bicep rubs. āWe canāt find her,ā March sobs, muffled behind her hands. She wipes her eyes, giving Himeko a pitiful look. āIā Iām pretty sure I heard her scream.ā

yingxing as a platonic yandereā¦
ć»Ah, yes⦠the beginning of the journey. When Blade was still āYingxing,ā he was a completely different person than the Stellaron Hunter he now is. Content to live a life as ephemeral and shining as a comet in the sky, he dedicated himself to making the most of the time he had, forging weapons and reaching a peak many of his long-life counterparts could only dream of. Yingxing was often characterized as āarrogant,ā a flaw he mightāve been well-owed on account of the progress he made in his short life, but he also deeply cherished the things and people that were close to him. As a result, Yingxing is quite the interesting person to look into as a platonic yandere.
ć»We know only a few major storybeats of Yingxingās life. One of the biggest of them is his homeworldās destruction at the hands of the borisin, and how it was nothing short of a miracle that brought him to the hands of the Xianzhou, alone. If the rather mellow Yingxing were to develop such an all-consuming obsession, the source might lie here. If another person- a much younger child, were to come with him on that journey, or even if he met another short-life species refugee later on at the Xianzhou, I can see an immediate connection forming. It was Yingxingās desire for vengeance that led him to being a craftsman, and that desire lasted him his entire (mortal) life. ā¦Itās only natural for someone to hold onto something thatās much like what they lost, hoping never to lose it again.
ć»Generally, Yingxing as a yandere is mostly about protection. He doesnāt need to try too hard to separate you from the world as long as youāre in his care; but he is incredibly wary about you ever being in danger, considering youāre of a part of his life that brushes with his young recollection of death. Thatās why I can see you ever getting sick or even dying as sending him off the edge and sending him to the edge, eliciting a certain tragedy with a different focus. Aside from that, you might live a mostly normal life⦠making the most of the time you have together, simply with a bit more of an overprotective caregiver and his arrogance meaning he doesnāt take anyone disrespecting you. ā¦Thereās not any hope of getting out, really, since all other members of the High Cloud Quintet think very highly of him, but Yingxing, at this point, is not a man truly characterized by obsession, simply care.

Fatui Harbinger Reader x HSR Crossover
(some vary to little to more writing of) trailblazer/astral express, aventurine, ashveil, hint of pantalone x reader
Reader is a Fatui Harbinger in HSR's world, tried writing about dark side of media/entertainment industry (exploitation) not that explicit? dunno, male reader (you can read in any pronoun/gender you wish! i just used male for this since it was requested that way :). ), parasocial relationships, mentions of stalking, Trailblazer can be either gender/not specified, mention of alcohol if you squint, some yandere, set in Planarcadia (I haven't actually gotten to it in the story, so my apologies if it is not accurate!!)
"Other people's text" "Your text"
requested!! <3 everyone loves reader š
Life is glamourous. Luxurious restaurants, loving fans, a nice mansion, and many good friends.
WHYWHYWHYWHY
Sure, being a Fatui Harbinger gave you higher authority and status than most, but no one could deny the fame that you particularly had. In fact, it had aided you not just in Teyvat, but in the universe as well.
Known for being an intelligent, powerful, and undeniably handsome Fatui Harbinger, a valuable asset of the Tsaritsa's, causes quite the target, whether politically, romantically, or platonically.
Even now, in a simple yet elegant restaurant all on your own, people who were once eating calmly in their seats were now chattering loudly, eyeing you, recording, and taking photos. The restaurant's security guards were doing the best they can, of course. Blocking the lovestruck people oh so diligently... Perhaps you should've appointed for a private booth instead.
By now, it was evening. Despite being a Fatui Harbinger in Teyvat, the Fatui had its connections with the Interastral Peace Corporation, as did you for various reasons. They were quite enthusiastic every time they sent in a representative to talk with you, always trying to strike a deal to have you work with them some more. Regardless, you were used to the attention by now.
The first time you stepped foot into the Astral Express, their beloved Trailblazer had gotten onto their knees, looking up at you with starry eyes, their hands clasped so tightly as if they worshipping you. March 7th had to scold them, a red, embarrassed flushed on her face even as she kept glancing at you with awe as well. It seemed like she really was trying to give a first good impression of herself in front of her one and only idol. Dan Heng, the quiet one, had only stuttered and intently stared at you with the same flush. Sunday, the cute bird... angel? hid his eyes with his wings every time you looked at him, his face growing darker the more you did so. Welt and Himeko greeted you with happy faces, ecstatic to meet you and to introduce you to the members of the Astral Express.
Now, when you visited today, the Trailblazer immediately hugged you as usual, welcoming you as if you were merely coming home from a long day of work like a beloved spouse.
"Darling! Welcome back~ I missed you! Did you miss me?"
They clearly had grown comfortable around you. They're such great friends, really. Even if they do love you more than what friends do.
"I did," You reply, smiling politely as usual. The usual smile that charmed them.
"Ahhh! You're so cute, sweetheart!"
March 7th huffed, crossing her arms and immediately walking over to the both of you, trying to tug the Trailblazer off. "Come on...! You're suffocating them!"
Just smile.
Truly, everyone loves you.
Maybe even a bit too much.
The fan who had barged into your workplace didn't escape your mind. Things like this were normal now.
Just be charming and nice.
Everyone likes you.
You couldn't escape now.
runrunrunrunrun
You remember when it all started that the IPC started their connections with you. You were an impressionable, naive, young kid. You signed the contract. That was all there was to it. They merely took what was promised and engaged their fans with your misery words.
It's not as if you wanted to, promise! You just couldn't escape from the situation. It was awful, and everyone saw, and everyone watched, and everyone laughed and saw and
You put on a smile every time they shined the cameras on you. You don't remember whether it was a forced one. But hey, you got more famous, right? The IPC got more famous too. Good for them.
THATSNOTMETHATSNOTME
Once you were back home, you sunk into your plush bedsheets and mattress, the same ones that Pantalone had spoiled you with.
Click.
Something flashed in the corner of your view, not noticeable enough for you to be aware of it.
Pulling out your phone, you noticed the same obscene amount of text messages from your fans on multiple social media platforms.
There were also 99+ calls, all from different phone numbers who had called many times. It was time to change your phone number again, it seemed. How did they even find out your new number?
"Marry me!!"
"OMG I saw you today!!"
"I had fun on that date with you yesterday! Are you coming to come by later?"
"AHH you're so attractive!"
"I loved your outfit!! Join me at the park later! We can talk together again under the stars!"

"Don't tell me that our time together last night meant nothing to you."
You ignored the last message. It wasn't as if they were going to know you read their message, and you weren't going to read the many other hundreds of messages right now. Besides, it was now time to scroll in bed instead, and the photos that you glazed over seemed to look like you sure, but you never hung out with them. They must've photoshopped it, so it wasn't worth looking into. There were tons of other creepy messages as well that weren't worth your time.
You notice a few more text messages a few minutes later. However, this time, from someone you know.

"Oops. I meant to text you instead, but my hand slipped and I pressed the credit button instead."
"By the way, don't you think 100,000 credits is too low for someone like my darling beloved?"
You have received 1,000,000 credits
"Be sure to text back soon <3"

"Hello~ Did you need something?"
Aventurine
"Nope! Just wanted to tell my darling goodnight."
"Oh yeah, I wanted to ask if you wanted to go out with me. My treat, of course."
"You can think of it as a nice little outing after your next meeting with the IPC. They want to talk with you again."
"I'm getting jealous, really."
"Promise you won't forget me, darling? <3"
"I might just have to deal with them myself."

HELPHELPHELPHELP
A week passes. The same meaningless, dull things happened again.
However, during your week, someone had slipped you a few photos of you sleeping in your bed. It sent shivers down your spine. A few clothes went missing as well. And were your things always placed that way in the living room?
There were the usual meetings with the Fatui, deals that dragged you into the spotlight for the IPC, and whatnot. Couldn't they see how tired you were? Being dragged left and right, pulled apart, having a light shining on you wherever you went, and everyone who picked you apart for them to see and watch. Your fame benefited them too much, and your face was too much of sweet candy for audience. You were antsy from being put on stage for so long once more, stuck to contracts and deals that had once appealed to you that involved your participation and spotlight. Perhaps you needed something to dull out your senses again.
Ah, but you couldn't right now. Let's not focus on the dull stuff, yes? You were now in Planarcadia for the first time, having been invited by the Astral Express to visit. You didn't choose to go with them, wanting alone time in your own misery. It was time to relax instead!
Donning a hood and a mask, you looked quite out of place here. Oh well. It was the land of Elation, where nothing mattered as long as you were having fun. It is quite the bright city, you noticed. All of the colorful buildings mixed together to create a vibrant view.
On your walk, you met a few notable figures. Ashveil, an odd detective who took on many kinds of jobs, had taken one good look at the upper half of your face and suddenly decided to bring you along with him before naming you as an entirely different celebrity. The monkey beside him, known as Narrator, only stared at him in disappointment.
"Hey! Don't blame me! Everyone here has the same good-looking face!" Ashveil only whined, trying not to embarrass himself in front of you.
You and this other person did NOT even have the same hair color! Oh well. He'd figure it out eventually. Maybe. There was also Blade and Silver Wolf, who were now in different outfits. They only stared at you intently, dissecting your every move and comparing it to determine if it was you. They didn't exactly jump onto conclusions. You only quickly walked away.
The more you walked around, the more you grew to be uneasy. They were right. There were tons of people who had the same face of you. The exact same face, walking around in different outfits. Outfits that you wore once. Outfits that the public shouldn't even know of, hidden away in your closet without being worn in public once. The same figure. The same physique. The same voice, laughing so melodically with a friend attached to the hip. Was that what Ashveil had meant earlier, with there being people having the same face?
Funnily enough, it seemed as if they were having a better time than you were, holding hands with their loved ones. The partners had varying types of behaviors. Some clingy. Some touchy. Some possessive.
You bet they didn't have the same amount of responsibilities as you did. Bet that they didn't deal with the same amount of attention everyday.
Bet that they didn't deal with the same amount of creepy letters, creepy text messages, having to change your phone number, forced to hide your appearance, force to-
Anyway, you heard of something called the "Furbobo Weekly" while walking around, surrounded by the pests who had the same faces as you with their darlings.
It wasn't fair how free they seemed to be, unlike you.
You searched up their website. As expected, there were pictures and articles of you everywhere. It seems that the Trailblazer has a hand in this magazine as well...?
There were many, many photos. Photos of you in cafes. Photos of you in restaurants. Photos of you in various shops. Photos of you outdoors. Photos of you in different homes. Photos of you in their beds. Claims of you being the real deal by the various ones who had taken the photos. There were comments under the specific articles that had such claims when you never even went to these places...
ILikeHandsomeFatuus
"Stop lying."
"We all wish he was the real one and holding us."
"You just have an imagenae in your bed like the rest of us.
AberrationsWillBeArrested
"True."
NotALiar
"Hi! I'm the photographer of the photo. I just wanted to say that yes, he's 100% real."
"Also, why is the Department of Aberration Defense responding to this??"
Imagenae? Is this what those who had the same face as you are? The Trailblazer never mentioned this to you before. Furthermore, there were also articles on those who stalked you and their photos and actions. The Furbobo Weekly also documented the amount of fanfics of you x reader, where to find such fanfics, and had a subscription related to it.
As you searched further on the internet, more photos of lookalikes popped up, as well as videos. Needless to say, you didn't want to look at them anymore. They clearly had done their job with fulfilling their hosts' fantasies and desires. Whether platonic or romantic, it didn't matter to you. They seemed genuinely happy.
SOWHYCOULDN'TYOUFEELTHESAMEWAY?
WHYWHYWHYWHY
ITWASN'TFAIR
Well, good for them! At least they were enjoying something, unlike you. Unlike you, who was going through the same motions in life. Unlike you, who was getting scared left and right by fans and society who thought they were your only one, your only lover, your only darling. Those who haunted you day and night, keeping you thinking and paranoid if whether someone was right outside your door or currently breathing down your neck.
It probably wouldn't be so bad. As long as they didn't bother you! And hey, with this new distraction of theirs, more people would come to see that they didn't need to be watching you 24/7, call your number which you didn't give out to just anyone, or take photos of you!
I'm scared of what they do with the clones
Hm? Why the nervousness in your heart? There is no need to be scared.
...
It turned out that there was another issue in your hands now. Or, out of your hands, rather. You couldn't control what other people did, could you? The Trailblazer has somehow noticed your recent silence, whether it is because of their stalking or incessant following and has taken down various posts on the Furbobo Weekly website that reviewed what was happening between your clones and fans. This never will end, will it?
Oh well.
Back to smiling.
What a cutie you are for the crowd. <3
hello~ i feel like this fic with the way it's written is kinda bad lol. i just went with the flow. hope you enjoyed! thank you for reading!!!
What kind of yanderes I think some genshin women are
(fair warning these are kinda experimental and more of a soft yandere type, so it might be mischaracterized the slightest. Enjoy reading though!)
Lauma- the overbearing type
Oh lady moonchanter, how gracious and beautiful she is, expending even her own life force to heal the people around her. Living such a dreary life, where all the people around her worshipped the sky that was made of pure falsehoods, and a goddess that never wanted to be one in the first place. She has gone through many hardships, and yet, it is a bit inspiring seeing her keep going despite it all.
Which is why she'd never wish anyone her life.
Oh little old you, the object of the moonchanter's affections, the one where she has her one eye affixed on everytime you pass her by. She's all the more nice to you, if a bit... Suffocating at times. As if she doesn't stop to think about your own autonomy.
"It's fine Lauma, I don't mind working a bit more-"
"You've been working for a while now, it would do me well if you took some much needed rest," she says, dragging you by your shoulders to bring you to a tea table, while both you and her knew that you'd only been working for a maximum of thirty minutes.
She smothers like no other, personally feeding you lakaberries herself when you refuse to take any. Hm? What do you mean she worries so much? It should be justified no? Nod krai is such a frigid land, and you never know when which meal is your last.
Of course, her tolerance for people you don't respect your rest either is limited. They will face the dead silent disappointing glare of the lady moonchanter, and would back off at seeing her just so... Protective. It's a weird thing, your relationship. She never does anything to harm you, or do anything explicitly outside of your consent, yet you still find yourself a tad bit uncomfortable.
But you love her, you'd get over it for her, right?
Rhinedottir- the perceptive type
Rhinedottir is a woman who prides herself on her own research. All of her creations were made through meticulous experimentation and her rigid understanding of what others considered the unknown.
You, on the other hand, were a mystery that she wanted to unravel more than anything.
Once a sinner and witch and now having added a shade to her endless arsenal of accomplishments, her humanity has already been long gone, so has her ability to perceive it properly. Why would she need to bother? A researcher worth their time wouldn't spend hours of their day rotting away at things that bored them, and she was no different. Psychology was never much of interest to her, only in the purity of the bodies she created.
You, however, were someone who eluded her whole sense of, well, everything.
She finds her gaze locked down into the flimsy world of Teyvat down below, studying your everything. Your reaction to the benign and malignant, a twitch of the eyebrow or in the corner of your lip. How you live with either a craving for endless knowledge or a wish to live in blissful ignorance for perpetuity.
She finds all of it entertaining, and, if she were so bold, endearing, even.
Ronova always looks at her with mild disappointment when she spends her day doing nothing more than her experiments and observing you. Naberious complains at her doing something so trivial, and Istaroth couldn't care less. But she was never one to listen to those who bored her, you would be a much better thing to study and grasp. The other shades yelled at her in absolute disbelief when she decided to raise you to the heavens themselves, but she paid them no mind once more.
After all, what better feeling is there than you groveling at her feet to comprehend her benevolence?
Nefer- the stalker type
To the learned and to the cautious, Nefer of the curitorium is a bad omen to begin with. A woman with do much power on her fingertips, head of the Northern intelligence guild, and controlling Teyvat from the underground. She gets their wariness, and though she does get her hands dirty at times, even enjoying it, she knows her limits enough not to meddle too much into trivial matters.
That all changed with you, however.
Poor old you, moving to Nod krai for a cheaper living space, only to live a life covered in bugs and rats and scrap metal that could cause tetanus at the slightest cut. The way you reacted, all dramatic and afraid, told her all she needed to know about the kind of person you were.
She had no reason to intervene, just a normal person regretting their stay in Nod krai almost immediately.
And yet...
She can't help but send Jahoda to check up on you from time to time, gaining more and more information on your day to day life than one person should. Jahoda expects the worst of you, after all, her boss is surveiling someone so thoroughly? She never could have expected it was because of a scratch that Nefer couldn't itch.
For each tidbits of your day to day life, Nefer finds herself meddling with your documents more and more. No criminal record? How strange, doesn't appear to be that way in the documents. Nod krai grew wearier at your own presence, and you had to gulp down the dread of the loneliness eating you whole.
That's when Nefer steps in of course.
"I'm Nefer of the curitorium of secrets, mind coming with me, dear?"
After all, it isn't her first time to play hero towards Nod krai, but she certainly wants it to be her first with you. Loneliness can just be a terrible instigator for the drug that is connection, now isn't it?
Chiori- the possessive type
Chiori likes to label parts of her brand as hers.
It, first of all, keeps away competition, and the competitive nature of any Fontainian worth their money would fight the masses for a luxury product of hers. She pays no mind to it, anything she sells belongs to the person who purchased it, but everyone would be able to tell where all that fashion greatness came from in the tag alone.
She finds, that her possessiveness doesn't extend to only her brand.
She's perceptive to a fault, never afraid to notice anything in others and point them out, applying to even herself. She knows, that what she feels for you isn't normal, and that if she acted upon her urges for real the marchausse phantom would have her in cuffs, dragged to meropide. She keeps her distance in her supposed attraction, because she knew that she wouldn't be good for you.
But it is a bit unfair to not act on her urges at all now isn't it?
Every single occasion where the two of you cross paths she somehow manages to wrangle a new set into your arms, free of charge, claiming "it's just scrap" when the measurements fit you to a t. You pay no mind to it, gifts are just gifts, and to deny clothes from Chiori herself would be blasphemous.
People would hog your attention all the time, asking where you got your outfits, complementing how it fit your complexion well, so on and so forth. She's no idiot to the rumors, how does middle-class you get access to such high quality items practically every week?
When you ask her, Chiori claims it's to "widen the reach of her brand since you're so sociable", but that's not really true is it? She's already a Teyvat-wide phenomena, there's really no need to give you all of these free, high quality stuff, when she could use it for better dresses. And yet, she finds herself hiding in a corner, pretending to be interested in the news when in reality all she wanted to see was the jealous glares of any gazes which falls on you with a tiny smirk on her face.
So, accept her generosity kindly, or with far too much excitement as you wished.
"You needn't worry so much about the time it took for all this."
After all, everyone knows what belongs to Chioriya boutique now.
āClingy! Durin, who repeatedly makes you late to wherever you need to be. "Just 5 more minutes!"..... 2 hours later. "Just one more kiss!" Half a tube of lipgloss later..... "Just have a little snack before you go!" A whole 5 course meal later.... You'd always end up canceling sooner or later, but it was worth it seeing the triumphant grin on his face.
āClingy! Durin, who loves giving you a chomp every once in a while. He'll sink his little teeth in whatever bare flesh of yours he can find (softly of course, can't risk hurting his darling). He hasn't quite figured out how hickeys work yet, so teeth indents will do for now.
āClingy! Durin, who lies on you everywhere. Lying in bed? He's sprawled on top of you. Sitting on the sofa? His head is in your lap. Picnic in the park? He's leaning against your shoulder. Sitting on the floor cleaning? He's slumped against your back.
āClingy! Durin, who generally clings to you like a koala. Small spoon, big spoon, butterknife, if there's a position he can be close to you in, he's tried it. Though he seems to be a big fan of flopping on top of you like a pancake, and squashing you. But you'll never complain about your difficulty breathing, who needs fresh air when you can just breath in the smell of wet dog straight from the boy on top of you.
āClingy! Durin, who needs you to smell like him at all hours of the day, constantly hugging you so his scent stays put in your clothes. He'll rub himself all over your blankets and pillows, nuzzle your hair, etc. And if the wind outside threatens his scenting, then you best believe he won't let you leave the house.
āClingy! Durin, who couldn't possibly let you shower or bathe alone, he'll be right there with you. He'll help you wash and brush your hair, massage the soap into your back, help you rinse off in every little corner. Then he'll dry you off, put up your hair, and help you with your skincare. He just looooooves taking care of his darling <3

ā ā§ cw: angst (little comfort), death, maybe ooc...
the grove of epiphany was in grave danger.
the black tide, a manic plague of sorts you'd only ever heard about in history books and rumours had surfaced within the holy city. the city intended to be a safe haven from all the fighting, death, and destruction had now been invaded by the very thing that wiped out entire populations not so long ago.
the very first seed of destruction had now been sowed in the grove. the home of many scholars, of a vast supply of knowledge, and even of the coreflame of reason itselfāsomething you all swore to protect with your life.
you caught on to the appearance of the black tide fairly early in its course meaning you were able to quarantine the majority of the grove. even so, this plague had already wiped out a small chunk of the grove's inhabitants.
you'll never forget the first time you stumbled across their lifeless bodies. perhaps that was the most fearful you've ever been in your life.
it was only yesterday, a day like any other. you were simply walking alongside anaxa, discussing and debating as you normally did. to any regular passerby, it would've appeared to be a heated debate and yet you two knew otherwise. the warmth in your intertwined hands, your loving gaze, and your considerate words; things only you two knew how to cherish amongst yourselves. then, a muffled cry echoed through the air, behind the library. your conversation halted almost instantly and you shared a quick nod; a mutual agreement to check it out. unease settled in the pit of your stomach though you weren't sure why exactly. you hoped it was nothing serious, just another scholar freaking out over some passage in a book, probably a line that completely contradicted their view on the world or threw their life's efforts to waste. that was a common occurrence here. but both you and anaxa knew that was not your regular cry. it was a pained cry unlike any otherāit sounded like death itself. you turned the corner to see... bodies? carcasses lay all over the pavement, twisted branches and leavesāall crumpled and driedāreplaced the ligaments of the poor souls who succumbed to madness. and of course, that wasn't all. while scanning the area, you found a ripped piece of black fabric, drifting in the wind through the scene of the crime. you were then reminded of what anaxa had told you recently, a man the chrysos heirs referred to as the black-robed swordsmaster, who traveled across amphoreus in search of the coreflames. seeing his cloak here, it's only natural you'd draw upon many conclusions. he came here for the coreflame of reason, and it wouldn't be out of sorts to say he had some connection to the black tide.
you were told he was strong. powerful to a terrifying degree. his strength could best those of the demi-gods. there was no way the grove would be able to defeat him, even if you gathered everyone together. besides, you wouldn't want them to succumb to the black tide anyways.
so, while anaxa helped you gather everyone into a quarantine of sorts, you continued racking up ideas, sharing your thoughts with anaxa. so many plans turned down, so many dead ends. you begun to wonder if this was an impossible venture, perhaps you simply had to accept fate and die.
...
yeah right.
like you'd let fate win.
since you seemed to have exhausted your thousands of options with anaxa, you decided to bring the problem to the rest of the scholars who, they themselves, were getting antsy.
at best, someone would propose a solution right there and then; otherwise, you'd at least get some inspiration. hopefully.
and who'd've believed it? there was a scholar in the crowd who'd devoted her life to studying coreflames; their structure and properties. she said it'd be possible to alchemically recreate a fake coreflame, though it wouldn't contain any of the divine properties of an actual coreflame, it would emit the same aura that could deceive someone for just a moment. it would be just enough to buy some time.
and with that, the foggy haze surrounding which plan to take cleared in your mind. that said, it was far from ideal but... it would minimize damages. one sacrifice. that's all it'd take. one life to save everyone else.
your plan was as followed: evacuate (almost) everyone with one of the evacuees bringing the real coreflame to okhema. meanwhile, one person was to stay in the grove, acting as bait with the fake coreflame to buy the others enough time. the black-robed swordsmaster would come and they'd have to fend him off for as long as possible. for the very least, the stall would have to take 30 minutes, if not more. this lone person would have to be able to fight at least a little.
you considered having more people stay to stall for longer but... but the more people who got involved, the more casualties the grove would face. you couldn't allow that to happen.
this would be a suicide mission for the staller.
and you'd be the one stalling, alone.
it was a risky gambit. if the swordsmaster sliced you in one go, the escapees would most certainly face him on the road. but you simply had to trust in your abilities to hold on until the bitter end. you'd hide the fake coreflame someplace safe, and you'd fight and fight and fight until the last drop of blood leaves your body.
you sent the scholar off (with some help) to create the replica coreflame as soon as possible. meanwhile, you were rallying the rest of the scholars, preparing them for the long road ahead. in all honesty, you were just bracing yourself for when you'd inevitably have to tell anaxa of your plan. your resolve was strong, but against the love of your life? you'd falter for sure. should he oppose you (which he most definitely would), you'd obviously reconsider your plan to some degree.
but it was the only way to minimize casualties, to keep the coreflame safe, to ensure that he stays safe. you'd sacrifice yourself in every single timeline for him, over and over and over again without hesitation or fail. if he lived, it didn't matter to you if you died (though you'd still like to stay alive alongside him but beggars can't be choosers).
you just... didn't know how to break the news to him.
it was hard, trying to find the oportune moment. you were always busy, he was always busy, you were kind of avoiding him... but, you were going to do it now, i swear!
or maybe you'd wait until he approached you...
"y/n."
oh god.
ask and you shall receive... haha... your heart already ached beyond belief. you sucked in as much air as you possibly could to suppress the pain in your chest. did he know already? or would you have to spoil the mood? not there was any mood to be spoiled but... oh, you can't do this. your poor heart can't take it, you were never good with goodbyes.
"i've heard something interesting from one of the scholars."
nevermind, he knew. okay. okay, you can do this. just face him, tell him your plan and don't cry. you slowly turned around, a smile plastered on your face though your heart was currently weeping in utter agony.
"when, pray tell, were you planning on telling me your 'plan' was a suicide mission for yourself?" his arms were crossed at his chest, his tone stern but there was a faint quiver. that alone was enough to make you buckle, you clenched your fists at your sides, trying not to cry.
"it's the only way, anaxa."
"it is far from the only way. you're smart enough to know this."
"it's the only solution that's feasible in the short amount of time that we have. the others are growing anxious, we can't keep them cooped up in here forever. sooner or later, someone's going to run out on their own in a futile attempt to escape. i'm sure the swordsmaster will be here any day now, we can't have everyone in the vicinity when he comes. i can't in good conscience let these people die."
"that doesn't matter, casualties are expected on this path." he paused. "i can find another way." his voice was desperate, urging. you noticed his hands trembling ever so slightly.
"anaxa..." your eyes softened and the ache in your chest grew.
"we can give up the coreflame. someone else can stall insteadā" his hurried suggestions only furthered your pain. even so, you still shook your head, your smile still strong.
"y/n, this is ridiculous. it doesn't have to be you. it shouldn't be you." in face of your composure, he begun to break down. "y/n, you can'tāy/n, please."
"i'll play my part in the flame chase journey, you'll play yours. so stop the end of the world for me, okay?" the smile you held all this time relaxed, slowly calming in the face of death.
"you know i don't believe in such genesis and prophecy. i don't care about the end of this world, defeating titans or what not; i care about you. you can'tāyou can't leave me."
tears begun to prick the corners of your eyes, a bittersweet chuckle escaped your lips. you'd always joked as to how ironic it was that one of the chrysos heirs cared not for titans and demi-gods. still, you had to admit, his concern for you was extremely touching.
you took a step forward, lacing his fingers with yours, your eyes staring up at his. a sea of emotions reflected in his, he was shaking. at the feeling of your warm hands laced with his cool fingers, he impulsively dove to embrace you in his arms, burying his head in your shoulder. you were taken aback for a moment, your arms froze midair. but, not soon after, your hands settled on his head, carefully caressing his hair.
"anaxa, i love you more than anything in this world. you are and will always be the best thing that has ever happened to me. i mean this with all my heart. i would've loved nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you, until we're old and grey. but if the black tide takes over, if the swordsmaster comes..." you paused, a chill running through your blood. "i can't lose you. i want you to live. perhaps i'm selfish for wanting that, but i won't back down."
"y-you can't, y/n, please. i'm begging you. you can't do this to me. i can't go on without you." he pleaded. small drops of water seemed to fall on your shoulder, and for the first time since you've known him, anaxa wept. his quiet sobs vibrated through your body.
you tend to forget anaxa could still act like a child with how arrogant his usual self is. you forgot he could cry. you were cruel, you knew that. after the death of his sister, how could he face the death of someone close to him again? it was your selfish desire for him to live, but he'd bear the consequences of your decision.
your breath hitched, you couldn't help but tremble in his quivering arms. you ran a hand through his hair, taking in a shaky breath to calm yourself. "it's alright, anaxa. i've made my peace with it." the tears you'd been withholding fell atop his head. "i'll be with you until the end of time. whether it be this life, or the next. you can't escape me even if you tried." you joked through your sobs.
"y/n, listen to me, please. this isn't a laughing matter. you won't make it. i won't make it without you. anyone else. it could be anyone else. i'll do it, it just cant be you."
you kissed the top of his head. "nothing can change my mind, anaxa. it's my plan; it's only right that it be me."
"i can't lose you. what's the point of saving the world if you won't be there when it gets betterāif it gets better."
"anaxa..." you took a deep breath, trying (and failing) to calm the pain in your chest. "anaxa, save the world for yourself, then. so you can experience hapiness without fear. so you can make new friends, find new joys, maybe even meet new love." you smiled. "i just want you to be happy."
"how can i find joy without you? any mirth is meaningless if you're not there. find new love? honestly, listen to yourself, you're not right in the head. y/n, i'm pleading with you; reconsider."
"i know you can do it, anaxa. you're stronger than i'll ever be. i love you; others can and will too. live on, okay?"
"no! ināin what world is this okay?" he lifted his head off of your shoulder to meet your gaze, his eye; red and puffy.
you brought your hands to his cheeks, caressing his tear soaked face with your thumbs. "i'm sure you'll do just fine without me. i just ask that you take care of yourself." you slowly approached your face to his, bringing your lips together in a act of goodbye. you could hear his heartbeat pumping through his chest. his muscles slowly relaxed under your touch, absorbing the warmth from your fingertips. you pulled away, giving him one last tear ridden smile. "i love you, anaxagoras. i'm sorry we didn't have more time together."
his lips parted, ready to respond. but he stopped himself. perhaps he knew saying those words truly meant goodbye. he couldn't bring himself to leave, to accept your death. he held his breath, gripping you tight in his arms.
you bathed in his warmth for the last time, smiling to yourself. he didn't need to say those words for you to know it to be true. you let the last of your tears fall onto his chest as his did too. you both made sure to save this warmth, remember it.
he would never forget you, he could never. even if he tried, you'd stay forever in his head and in his heart. look at him, he couldn't even let you go now, while you were still alive.
he composed himself eventually. with a huff, he managed to look you in the eyes once more. "i will never agree with this decision... but... as always, your resolve will never fail to waver mine."
you let the breath you'd been holding in exit in relief. "see you tomorrow, anaxa."
"...i ...i love you, y/n. please stay safe, i'll come back for you."
you shook your head in surrender. "it should be me saying that to you. anaxa, please take care."
that night (or day, the sky stayed the same), you put your plan into action. one last goodbye to the rest of the scholars, your friends, and anaxa. you waved them off with a newfound determination in your eyes, you gripped the sword in your hand tight.
you stood at the gate for a while longer, meeting anaxa's gaze as he looked back. you smiled.
his last memory of you.
you then made your way to the luminary throne. your steps were slow, every click of your shoes echoed through the silent air. you held the replica coreflame in your arms, close to your chest and waited. you weren't sure when the swordsmaster would show up, only that he would. and you'd be waiting for him.
you had to stall, for anaxa. you started to worry, what if the swordsmaster knew of your plan? what if you've just sent them all to their deaths? fear begun to gnaw at you but you had to calm yourself. and, as luck would have it, he appeared.
before you stood the masked, black-robed swordsmaster. you sighed in relief. now came the hard part; stalling. you weren't the greatest warrior by any means, there's a reason you weren't an active participant in the flame-chase journey. but you had will, if nothing else. you had to protect them, protect him.
you placed the coreflame on the throne behind you, readying your sword.
anaxa swore he could hear the clanking of swords as he and the crowd continued to run like there was no tomorrow. he was not what you'd call an athletic person but he couldn't let your strength go to waste. if he was quick enough, and you strong enough; he could run back once the coreflame was returned and meet you once more. if he pushed on through the pain in his lungs and chest, maybe, just maybe, you two would stay together.
the fight was a long and arduous one. in all honesty, you should've died at the very beginning of this battle. but you were running on so, so, so much adrenaline that all the cuts and scrapes you'd suffered through this fight couldn't stop you.
you were bleeding all over, your limbs broken and cracked, bruises everywhere. you lost track of time, had you stalled long enough for them to make it back safely? who could tell. you just had to keep on fighting until you died.
in what felt like forever, the swordsmaster had finally pierced your heart, your body finally slumping to the ground, your crimson red blood spilling all over the floor. "you... lost..." you breathed out in agony and relief.
as your eyelids took a rest, you saw anaxa. they do say your life flashes before your eyes as death takes you. funny, does that mean anaxa was your life? you wouldn't be surprised.
it was silent. the swordsmaster had probably left, chasing after the real coreflame. you could only hope that they'd made it back already.
the frantic sounds of running sounded and vibrated through the ground. who could that be? you tried to open your eyes, though the sword in your chest made it rather difficult.
even so, you pushed your body even further, using every muscle in your body till your very last breath. there stood anaxa by your side. seems like you did your job perfectly, you'd bought them so much time. enough time for anaxa to return the coreflame to okhema and return to your side. he dropped to his knees, cradling you in his arms. he was saying something, he sounded pained. you couldn't make out a single word. his muffled sobs were all that was audible.
how unfortunate, you wanted his last memory of you to be a good one, one where your limbs were intact and blood wasn't dripping from every inch of your body. you tried to smile, the corner of your lips raising ever so slightly. you weakly reached out an arm to meet his face. "...don't...cry..." his tears fell on your wounds. they were warm. "...love..." you'd pushed your body way further than what it should've been able to. a true testament to your will. but, it was time to say goodbye. your body gave out like a ragdoll, cold and lifeless in his arms.
following your death, anaxa he let out a cry of agony, he was a sobbing mess, breaking down on the floor, your corpse still in his arms.
he was too late. you held on so long for what? for him to come after you'd been murdered. how long did you halt death, how long did you wait for him?
he was truly alone now.
meanwhile, you were engulfed in a sea of darkness. perhaps this was death. an eternal limbo, alone, dark. in an instant, the dark turned into a blinding light before the landscape around you formed into a galaxy. a place you'd never seen, a beautiful blue and purple ocean ridden with stars. somewhere beyond the sky. something you never thought you'd see. it was breathtaking.
you walked towards the beacon of light in the middle, drawn to it like a moth to a flame. you reached out, your fingertips grazing the fuzzy light.
you weren't exactly sure what happened, but next you knew, you found yourself above. looking down at worlds, planets, scattered all across the galaxy. around you were unfamiliar godlike figures. "welcome, aeon of will."

Tags: Dan Heng x fem reader, established relationship, cuddles, one (1) pun, mild tail riding, nsft, 700 words
"Hengie?" You tried to wriggle a little to no avail, your sweet dragon too wrapped up around you to let you pull away. "You're kinda crushing me here..."
Dan Heng grumbled softly, more a purr than anything coherent. It was rare for him to sleep this soundly, usually either riddled with nightmares or half awake and alert. Instances like this had, however, become more frequent.
His tail had both your legs in a tight lock, the strong appendage pressed between your thighs to soak up as much warmth as possible from your skin. It'd been nice at first, like having a large pillow to support your legs when you turned on your side. Then it'd begun twitching a little like he was dreaming.
And then you'd started dreaming. Whatever silly thing your mind had conjured up, you could only remember that it'd involved Himeko's coffee, had been swiftly turned to far more suggestive activities once the pressure between your thigh had become too much.
You'd woken up aching and practically soaked. How exactly could you know that this was Dan Heng's fault and that you hadn't just been rubbing against him? Well, you couldn't. But the fact that he was twitching and dragging his tail against you now, which was wildly incriminating in your opinion.
"Overgrown lizard..."
"...I heard that.."
His arms tightened around you, trapping you further against his broad chest. You tilted your head just enough to nip at his bicep.
"So you're just ignoring the fact that I'm suffocating?"
Dan Heng nuzzled into your nape and curled up around you. "Mhm.. just a little longer.." His tail moved, slowly pulling back and untangling itself from your legs, putting pressure against your clothed sex the entire time. "Doesn't seem like you mind it too much."
It drew a little squeak from you, your hips instinctively moving to chase the friction that his smooth scales had provided. He didn't let you miss it long, the outermost part curling to rub you through your panties with more vigor.
"Of course I mind it," you huffed, hands doing nothing to stop him, "you're using me as a heater when we're supposed to be getting up." You felt his chest vibrate with a rare, warm laughter, and your cheeks heated up just the slightest with confusion. "What's so funny about that..."
Dan Heng cleared his throat, mouthing a little at your neck and letting his sharp fangs drag down your skin. One of his hands moved to your hip, giving it a little squeeze before pressing against your rear. "Ah well, I just thought that I'd rather be getting up in you."
Your eyes snapped open in disbelief. His tail had stopped moving between your legs and you could feel him practically trying to hide in the crook of your neck. You'd wager his ears were bright red if you turned to look.
"Did Stelle teach you that one?" You arched your back, feeling his lengths twitch against you.
"Caelus, actually."
You snorted at that, reaching for the hand that had been feeling along your chest and bringing it to your lips. "Tell him it was horrible."
Dan Heng still sounded embarrassed when he chuckled into your shoulder, but the little ruts of his hips hadn't ceased. "I already did."
Comfortable silence stretched, both of you occupied with kissing what bare skin you could reach and slowly grinding against each other. Your breath hitched when his tail resumed its teasing exploration, his fingertips reaching down to tug your panties aside enough to let the scaly appendage push through your folds.
He groaned against you as your wetness coated him, guiding your hips back and forth in slow movements that had you feeling every little ridge. A breathy little whine left you when it nudged at your sensitive bundle of nerves, and Dan Heng adjusted until his breath brushed against your ear.
"But it wasn't so bad that you've asked me to stop.."
i yearn for self aware blade,,, i've barely seen any on here (with him specifically),, it's such a neat concept,, i think im being self aware of the player would be quite interesting ! bonus if it's a player who mains him ! or perhaps they main another character and he starts to feel a bit of jealousy,, ššš
Oh, thatās a good idea! I might make a mini series of this but hereās what I can think of on the spot:
Self aware!Blade who appreciates you still using him as your main DPS, even despite all the newer, shinier ones being released every other monthā¦truly, your loyalty to him is unparalleled. How can he not adore you?
Self aware!Blade who patiently waits for you every day. Even just doing dailies with you for two minutes a day is one well spent. Heāll clear alllll the mobs you want just to make sure you get nice relicsā¦but maybe heāll ensure those relics are still subpar, just so he can prolong this grind with you. The longer you rely on him, the better.
Self aware!Blade who feels like he needs to hit harder, be stronger because you seem to keep replaying this endgame stageā¦possibly for a 0-cycle? Heāll crit for you, he always makes sure to land a crit no matter what his crit rate looks likeābut upping the damage, hm. Itās tricky. Heāll swing harder. Harder. If an attack is miraculously directed away from him, heāll jump in front of it nonetheless to get a stack so he can unleash his talent faster. All for you.
Oh, you might not be paying attention to his stats, but thereās somehowā¦an increase in his crit damage? Itās about 25% more than it used to be. Youāll keep using him, right? Heāll hit harder just for you.
Self aware!Blade who realises youāre relying on him to farm materials for other characters you intend to build. What a painā¦but he canāt just turn up with zero yields, so he begrudgingly cooperates with you. Itās okay. Youāll see how the latest characters are boring anyway and return to good olā Bladie, wonāt you?
Self aware!Blade who wonders if you know that the original Blade and Mortenax Blade are two separate entities even if they are fundamentally the same person. And original Blade does not enjoy the smug look on Mortenax Bladeās face when he gets picked for the team over him. The new, shiny toy thatās dominating everything in the game⦠Self aware!Blade needs to hit harder, then.
Look, look. His crit damage has gone up another 50% all on its own! Will you pay attention to him now? You will keep using him, right?
Self aware!Blade, the original one, who feels like youāre slowly forgetting about him just because his future self seems to shower you with more attention. But the original canāt try and make up for it because the game does not call for two Blades at once. So perhaps he should look to more methods of getting stronger so you can pay attention to him againā¦
Self aware!Blade who decimates your 50/50s eagerly, because more eidolons equals more power, and more power equals more attention, right? So whyā¦why are you disappointed that you lost your 50/50 to him? You should be smiling, right? Shouldnāt you be relieved?
