abigail was hurrying through town, trying to get home to her brother who was waiting on dinner. they had lost their parents and they o nly had each other and she didn't like to leave things until the last minute. he'd be home from work in just a few hours. she sighed as she made her way down the sidewalk with bags in hand and she heard a voice to the side and raised her eyebrows when she saw a man speaking to her. her cheeks flushed and she bit into her lower lip. "virtuous?" she murmured and shifted her weight from one foot to the other. "i wouldn't say virtuous...that is the first time i've heard that one," she chuckled and canted her head to the side. she took a deep breath and nodded quickly, "i am. lived here all my life. it's just me and my older brother now, though." the petite brunette smiled gently. "i'm abigail. you're not...a local, though. i would remember you. it's not exactly the big apple or anything here, so i know most of the residents." she arched a brow and caught a glimpse of flyers in his grip. "what are those?" she asked and shielded her eyes from the noonday sun. she chewed on her lower lip and set her bags down because they were getting heavy for her right now as she just stood there in front of the guy.

everything the stranger shared with him, elias stored away in his mind. all information -- no matter how small or insignificant -- could be beneficial to the cause, and in his eager hands, such detail became a handy tool for recruitment. people were far more susceptible to his influence if they felt that he understood them and desired to help them, regardless of how heavy their burdens may be. while she may have felt she gave nothing away, the man was already using what she said and brewing a way to pull her under his spell. “ nice to meet you, abigail. ” his warm hand extended outwards for her to shake, smile never fading from features. “ i'm elias. and yes, you're right, i'm not a local. my family just moved into town six weeks ago. ” there's an intentional pause as his expression faltered, eyes dropping for a moment before they swoop back up to meet hers once more. “ well, actually . . . it's just me and my big brother right now too. that's why we're here, to grow our family and hopefully make a difference to this community. ” the male offers her the flyer with his beaming face on it, a myriad of words in different fonts and sizes informing the reader of a new church opening up on the south side. “ i don't know if you're a woman of faith at all but if so, we'd love to have you stop by. my brother is the preacher, and i . . . ” what does he do, besides accost and entice the townsfolk ? “ i'm more of a helper, i guess, so you'll probably be seeing me around a lot more. hopefully doing some good. ” chewing at his bottom lip, brown gaze scanned over the array of shopping bags now at rest on the sweltering sidewalk. “ maybe you'll help me get my good deeds rolling by letting me carry your groceries home ? ”

"so you're the pretty one, huh?" she comments, mostly joking. "where i come from we'd call you the bait." aniyah says, laughing at her own joke before folding the flyer up and tucking it away in a pocket of her jeans. "and no, i have no plans for sunday."

aniyah -- there it is, the name that will cement itself to elias' memory. he's always had a knack for putting a name to a face and it surprisingly goes a long way in earning the trust of the townsfolk, but he makes a mental note to not let this one slip him by. “ beautiful name, ” compliments are softly offered, his brown gaze drinking in her features to bank them right there alongside the name that's being repeated over and over in his head. “ yes, the pretty one. ” for the first time today, his laugh is genuine, the candor of the stranger a welcome reprieve from the curated script he's been married to for most of the day. “ or the shameless one, i guess. i really don't have a problem playing ‘ bait ’ as long as i can help spread the good word, you know ? i don't think He minds my methods either. ” on cue, a lone index finger directs upwards towards the cloudless sky. there's another break from flow to gauge her reaction, to see if and when she might object to faith being edged into the conversation. while most he's approached have been fairly susceptible to his advances, those who object to religion ( or just their particular flavor of it ) have no problem immediately cutting through his words. luckily for them, the man is blessed with tenacity, and their dismissal does not deter his pursuit. my brother demands a flock, and he'll be damned if he does not help deliver it. “ so you'll join us on sunday, then ? ” he angles his head and narrows his eyes, smile growing brighter as the invite hangs in the air. “ even if you don't want to attend the service, we're having a get together for the wider community afterwards. good food, live music, an opportunity to get to know your new neighbors . . . how can you possibly say no, aniyah ? ”
